Microsoft Confirms XNA Zune CTP For May

ZuneGaming.jpgThough Microsoft has not yet set a release date for XNA Zune games, the company confirmed that the first community technology preview is targeted for this month.

Earlier this year at GDC, we got to check out a little preview of what Zune XNA gaming might look like — check here for a refresher, and check here for what we've learned on how multiplayer might go down.

@Eragon117: It would be foolish if they don't have some sort of LIVE functionality with it. They already charge (a reasonable fee) for the Zune Market place... they should extend live functionality to that. But if things were that easy, I guess they would have had a music store by now on LIVE.

I'm going to want in on this :)

  • This would be cool if I still used my Zune. My wife bought me one from the Microsoft store, and after a month or so, she kind of took it over. I might have to ask for it back. LOL

  • I was about ready to give away my Zune as well... I might keep it a little longer just to see what becomes of this.

  • Nice, good enough of a reason to buy a Zune. Can't wait for it. ^_^

  • Sweet! Hopefully something will be out before the 20th. I have a long trip and would love to just have to bring my zune for entertainment instead of a game boy too.

I still think mini games tied onto their 360 counterparts would be perfect. Some gambling game for GTA IV to earn money or maybe a few achievments added on to the zune version to get the score up.

There's so many possibilities. I just hope they go all the way with this.

  • Comment on Microsoft Confirms XNA Zune CTP For May Zune? Who cares? We all know whatever Microsoft releases will be bloated, crippled and tacky.

Not interested in tiny arcade games. I really don't think this is even worth their time.

  • @okenny :): The Zune marketplace is priced the same if not less than iTunes. The Zune Marketplace doesn't sell Movies nor games. Just music and some music videos. So what do you mean? The Zune website is connected to your XBL gamertag already when I log in I see all of my friends and if they have a ZUNE and buy music or even if they rip CDs the last few tracks they listened to show up and an option to buy. So all that is needed now is XBL arcade style games and please give us movies..!

    *sigh*

Yes, I own a Zune too. I wasn't being sarcastic when I said it was a reasonable free. I like their flat-fee structure. The points I made are regarding interoperability between the Zune and the 360 (LIVE Marketplace and Zune Marketplace to be more specific). If you can do multiplayer games on Zune, I just don't want to have to pay any extra fees. Like wise if they bring a music store to the 360, I wouldn't want to have to pay extra on the 360 if I'm already subscribed to Zune.

@Demonbird: Baby steps my friend, baby steps. If they can get this working in some meaningful way, they'd be able to connect two platforms. You can use similar SDKs to deploy games to the PC, 360, and Zune. The next logical step is Windows Mobile Devices.. the end benefit is that it will all sit under the LIVE platform. Like the PSP has been trying to do for a while now, you can have a unified game experience... that might be worth something. Again it comes down to Microsoft's execution.

  • There are more and more reasons for me to get a Zune. Now I'm just waiting its release in Canada.

  • Its about time! Zune to Xbox connectivity would be nice, if not obvious, and of course live funcionality. If I had a pick of options, though, I'd love to see achievement integration.

  • i like my psp way better...they should make something more like that for portable gaming/ entertainment.

  • It's all gonna converge...

I'm excited, I'm can't wait till they have some kind of zune/360 monthly pass that includes movies,tv,and music.

I'd be down like a prom night dumpster baby.

See, I'm not even making sense now.

  • @g1g010: Just import one. I bought one here in the UK and thanks to the shitty US dollar at the moment I got it cheap.

  • Zune is releasing the new software update today that fixes tons of the problems. very *excited*

  • Great, now if they've finally fixed the crappy management software, I can be happy about the device.

(It really is a fantastic player, just the software has been sooooo crap and they won't release an SDK to the community.)

  • LAWL...Zune...LAWL

  • @beeporama (brian.j.parker): Typical of Microsoft

  • @SlowDeath420: You are begging for the hammer to come down, aren't you?

@neoraul20: Funny, I would think the opposite would be typical of Microsoft. They have amazing software engineers but I would have expected the hardware to be crappier. Then again, not releasing an SDK *is* pretty typical... if I could go back and do it over, I probably would have gotten something else. I'm sure Zune v3 will be awesome, but it needs to go back in the oven for a while.

  • @beeporama (brian.j.parker):

Honestly, I don't really have software issues. What's the deal? What kind of issues are goin' on?

I have a Zune v2, not sure if that makes a huge difference.

  • @beeporama (brian.j.parker): Most Microsoft-branded hardware is of excellent design and craftsmanship. Just check out their mouse/keyboard line.

@The SmacK: Their whole podcasting system needs to be reworked: oftentimes, individual episodes are listed an additional time each time the device syncs. The individual subscriptions throw near-constant unspecified errors and have trouble reading valid rss feeds. The software itself has random slowdown issues.

  • @DaoKaioshin:

Well, I've never had the slowdown (quadcore w/ 4gb of ram), so I can't vouch for that. The podcasting does get funky though, but it seems like it only messes up on certain podcasts. It almost sometimes seems like it's not the softwares fault.

  • @The SmacK: Check the zune.net forums. Until this update, the metadata editing sucked where it even existed-- changes to artist name often would not "take," and little other metadata was available. The automatic update was unreliable; synching was weird (often randomly deleting things); you can't play off the device and couldn't see playlists on it; it didn't have any of the nice features in iTunes like adjusting song volume or skipping the end/beginning of a track; podcasts often didn't update correctly... that's off the top of my head. I will say though, having used the new software for a few days, a lot of the problems seem to have been addressed. Hopefully they're on their way.

@DaoKaioshin: You know, you're right. I've been buying the Intellimouse Explorer to bring in to work since 2000. I'm not fairly characterizing their hardware, based on the 360 RROD fiasco.
