One of this summer's blockbuster attempts from Sierra and Radical Entertainment won't show its face until next year, as GameSpot reports Prototype has been delayed until some time in 2009. Why? According to Sierra reps, "we need more time to deliver the game the team initially set out to create."
Let's hope that the version of Prototype they initially set out to create actually includes the co-op multiplayer portion that was recently axed. We won't hold our breath on that one, as Radical is probably taking the extra six months to perfect hoodie physics or make the explosions more explosion-y.

I hope this game shapes up to be what I thought Assassin's Creed would be. Loved the gameplay style but the game itself was bland.
This on the other hand looks like all the fun and mayhem one could possibly want! Free style running ftw? (parkur? parkor? parkay? ok that last one is the butter substitute but you get my drift that I forgot wtf that frenchie stuff was called).
Oh please oh PLEASE let them put co-op back in. It's what will get them my monies.
I am so disappointed. I know, it's a good sign that they're not rushing and all that.
But seriously, I've never been more disappointed in a delay ever.
I really wonder if this is the first reported instance of a sandbox-style game's developer seeing GTA4 and going "oh crap."
I know it happened with Mario 64 back in the day. Other companies saw it and just went back to the drawing board. Definitely could be the case here.
@karasu is my homeboy: Ah come on, Cheer up buddy. The new Duke Nukem is right around the corner to keep you busy in the meantime.
Wonder if GTA had something to do with this eh?
Yeah.. GTA4 hit and they realized that expectations will be raised across the board. I will not be surprised if they really blow out the game's multiplayer component. What's a sand box games these days without multiplayer really?
Only one game can have a free pass at being purely single player and that's Oblivion :)
..oh what a pathetic sandbox MSORPG whore I am!
@Tulkamir: Sir! Great minds think like YOU!
@boxmyth: Hm, that's probably a part of it, although I'm sure a part of it is simply "this is taking a hell of a lot longer than we thought", which companies seem to be realizing left & right with 6-month, year-long delays for big-budget titles. Assassin's Creed IMO was rushed; it was frustrating to see that they couldn't polish the gameplay to match the amazing graphical+physics+movement engine.
On the flip side, it's kinda nice that we're not bombarded with a ton of titles every year. The fewer "must have" titles are released, the more time you get to spend to appreciate each of them (and a lot of the random niche and smaller titles too!)...with time being the precious resource as the core gamer demographic ages to its 30's. Come on, GTAIV came out just a few days ago!
@Derigor: This game is more along the lines of Hulk: Ultimate destruction than Assassin's Creed.
I keep getting this confused with Infamous (Sucker Punch) from their spots they look to be similar in theme/charcaters and possibly game play.
I liked the last prototype trailer quite a bit, and I'm pretty curious where Infamous is at these days.
Tell you what, I can't seem to get excited for this game in any case. I wasn't interested that much with the old release date and not even before they canned co-op.
Maybe because I was always anticipating a much later release date. There's just too little coverage. Also, the gameplay looked generic to me. Yea, it's a sandbox and it promises that you can destroy most things......is that it? Seriously? I know about the shape shifting but ehh...that's not nearly enough for me.
I had a feeling... it looked to me from the gameplay vids they didn't have much of a story or mission-based gameplay going yet. That stuff is integral to a sandbox game. Aside from providing lots of sand (i.e. random stuff to do), you need some kind of structure underneath.
Though I can't say it hurt Assassin's Creed or Crackdown much.
Can we pass a law that bars publishers from telling us about a game unless it's already finished and soon to be released? I'm so tired of being told either about games years away from release or about games that were soon to be released but keep getting delayed and pushed back months or years.
It just gets annoying and frustrating eventually.
@boxmyth: exactly what i was thinking. they're probably enjoying the game themselves and thinking of the possibilities they could incorporate in prototype
@okenny :): Haha, we just may be a pair of geniuses!
Lixie: Can we pass a law that bars publishers from telling us about a game unless it's already finished and soon to be released?
Um, what are you doing on a gaming site? It seems to me that if someone wanted to avoid this sort of stuff, it would be fairly easy.
I have a question: What happened to Sucker Punch's inFamous???
I want to see more. It's been over a year since the teaser and all has been silent on the front since. Come on Sony, hook us up with some info.
Thats too bad since I was looking foward to it after watching the new trailer.
I guess if they put back in co-op all can be forgiven though. ;D
@TalAarahk: Yea I know but they have that kinda Moment element going that AC had. The fact that altair would auto jump and grab ledges while I was running along roof tops and what not. This game is supposed to act in a similar fashion which I love.
Wanna know something stupid? The only reason I didnt buy Drakes Fortune is because I tried the demo, missed a Jump timing deal, character didnt reach out to grab on and just friggin fell down. Then I had to run all the way around. Yea Ninja Gaiden broke my patience for that crap, and AC proved we could move past that type of gameplay.
@Witzbold: Let every Dev out there know, That I, Derigor Mortis, solemly swear to purchase every single game that has split screen co-op. EVER. I friggin bought army of two just because.
I've been looking forward to Prototype. All I had to hear was 'the crew that made Ultimate Destru-', and I said Yes Sir! Thank you Sir! Please!
What we've seen so far looks cool but unpolished. If they need another six months, twelve months, sixteen months to be happy with the game I'm happy to let them. It'll be all the sweeter when it comes.
@lordargent: I'd tell you why I'm here, but due to unspecified reasons that response has been delay until sometime in 2009.
I think it's needed... from what i've seen it looks promising.. but doesn't feel complete yet.
I'm not surprised in the least. If all the stuff they're saying is really going to be in the game, then there's no way they could have gotten it out in time for the holidays.
"Let's hope that the version of Prototype they initially set out to create actually includes the co-op multiplayer portion that was recently axed. We won't hold our breath on that one" That's what I was thinking. I don't want another lonely sandbox game. I think that should be the true meaning of SANDBOX, play with your friends in the sandbox, right?
I'm disappointed, but I'd rather have a kickass late project than something full of bugs needing to be patched until the end of time...
If the logic that sandboxers are pushing back because of GTA IV holds true, then you should expect Saint's Row to imminently announce it's being delayed.
I'd like to have played this game this year, but I honestly stopped being superexcited after the last batch of videos came out and it looked very bland and derivative.
As well, we've still got Gears of War 2, Fable 2 and Fallout 3 coming this year, as well as Alone in the Dark. It'll be a good one.
like anyone ever believed they would be ready for a 2008 release.
i doubt they believed themselves, too.
hopefully the delay will give em time to put co-op into the game.
That's because the game looks like crap. Push it back until 2010.
@Derigor: I aint into SSCO. I want OLCO, since that by far is easier to enjoy with a friend.
@Witzbold: I really would like them both with a slight leaning toward OLCO.... but only the tiniest slightest smidgenist bit.
Oh well, it's something to look forward to next year.
They can take as long as they want. This game looks more and more amazing by the second.
Not a surprise. Only reason it worries me is because quite a few games are quietly being pushed back again and again until it isn't 2008 anymore. Also, they really better put in co-op with this. That's almost essential. I also suspect it has to do with lots of previews saying it looks really early on and not looking so great (graphics-wise).
Everyone bringing up "Infamous."
Sony is set to release all sorts of new info some time tomorrow. Granted, most eyes are Resistance 2, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet... But I think it's possible we'll get an update on Infamous too.
@DaPress: Gears 2, Fable 2, and Fallout 3: my sentiments exactly.
This is why they need to put co-op back in, or at least some sort of multiplayer component. They will fail financially going against these games.
Or maybe that's why they pushed it back, so they would not have to compete.
Co-op is extremely important. I'd rather have Crackdown 2, but this could be decent as well.
If they are working on hoodie physics, will it surpass the bar set by Nathan Drake's shirt?
WHAT?!?! I hadn't heard that they axed the co-op. That was going to be some amazing fun.
Here's hoping they get that back in.
I thought they were just saying it to build hype but pushing it to 09 is not a hype builder to me.
I cant believe this crap.
I do think some of it might be the kommets of Kotaku and Gametrailers saying it looks unfinished and empty from the last trailer
Until game companies start creating new and different characters, I will stop buying games starring, like this one, generic white guys with generic names the (just the name alex mercer makes me want to fall asleep.)
this game alredy looks great why not make it better, i say take your time.
the game already looked somewhat bad and now they even delay it? :| I will start to wonder what the developers are doing all the time if the game will still look like this when it gets released... (-_-);
Vaporware?
Or is this going to be like Bioshock; pushed back a very long time and good stuff still gets cut?
After the release of GTA4, who can blame them? Releasing a sandbox game now is suicide. Hell, I've played so much GTA4, Im not looking at another sandbox game in a while.
@zlimness: Same here. I'm 24 hours in and only 34% complete. I can't imaging another sandbox game I'd rather be playing this year with the possible exception of Fallout 3, which is more RPG than sandbox.
this is somewhat lame, i have been lookign forward to this game for awhile. but from ealry videos it did seem liek the game had a ways to go to get to must buy status.
This game is looking great, this is the only other sandbox game I'm interested. (GTA4 being the other one)
HEy, you have to get the hoodie animation just right or it ruins the whole game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
