Re: What's Old Is New Again
Tristan's birthday went off without a hitch on Sunday (his real birthday was Saturday, but we had the party on Sunday). We held it at a local fun center that had a ton of different things including a laser tag area, arcade and even a one of those Battlemech, sit down games. I hadn't played the Battlemech game since it first hit in the, 90s I think. Really hasn't improved much and still leaves me feeling sorta bored. Laser tag hasn't changed much either, though the rigs we played with had laser sites, which is really damn cool. I had forgotten it was to run around shooting people in a neon-lit maze. Tristan and his friends managed to keep me out of the game for most of the ten minute round by using the Spartan tactic of forming a pack and just peppering me with lasers constantly. It must have been fun for those not involved to watch a pack of six kids less than half my size chasing me through the maze coating me with little red lights. Man, they were vicious.

Mmmm...sacrilicious.
Rule 1 of lazer tag: Never underestimate the childrens.
What did you get him as a present?
@MoeB: A new mountain bike.
@MoeB: GTAIV? XD
@Brian Crecente: thats nice too
@Brian Crecente: Sweet. I really hope it came with a Racing Alloy Bicycle Bell :)
Only tried lazer tag once. I was a kid, and my natural instinct was to take down the parents first.
Brian I play at those pods. There is alot more to do in them then just turn with the joystick and shoot. If you ever go down again let me know. I know the owner of the pods. I'll see if we can hook you up and play some fun games. (Nothing like a 30 minute team mission with only 1 life to live)
@Brian Crecente: Very sweet. Hope you both had a great time.
Give him 10 Birthday beats for me >:D
@goldwings: Wait a minute, I don't even know how old your son is :/
Was the laser tag place at least well ventalated? I went to one one time thinking it had cool smoke effects, but no, that was dust. I got some kind of lung dissorder from that.
the laser tag part reminds me of my laser tag days, i remember 2 kinds of laser tags i did
1 was like yours, a giant maze where little kids dominate every big person in the area, including me
another one was really neat, it was a 2 team battle where each team starts out on one side, theres a bunch of columns and things to take cover behind, some ramps, and its simply a battle against eachother, which really used tactics, it was awsome
esepcially when my team won :)
and nice gift for him as well
@jambe:
that sucks, one time when i went, when i picked up the gun there was saliva and some other sticky stuff, i threw it on the ground and broke it. nobody found out till after the game, since i had taken a diff, suit after that... ahh good times
Sounds like a lot of fun. I hope arcades/fun centers are still around when I have kids. This makes me really nostalgic, except instead of Battlemech, we played Virtual On.
Man, I wish they allowed Simpsons clips on youtube. The laser tag one would have been appropriate here.

"Did you know if all the kids aim their lasers at you at once, they can do some real damage?"
@zombieman3421: I've never lost a match of Team Battle at laserstar, or come in anything less than 1st place.
It's my one, singular talent, because I suck at everything else. Yep, I'm the champion at pretending to kill people.
Go me! *cries*
Laser sights, I never had those as a kid. That sounds kind of bad ass really.
hey, my birthday was saturday, too!
but i'm not your son, so i am minus a laser-tag filled day and a new mountain bike.
but at 28, my knees can't take all that running and squatting in laser tag. that's why i play halo. less active, same thrill. kinda.
i hate fog filled laser tags
the smell of sweaty socks and kids yelling, plus the overprice entry fee
but you get the rush of a RL FPS Game
Laser Quest in Mountain View, CA ftw. I remember me and my friends would shoot the workers (that were in the arena to keep things in order) in the eye, from the second floor, fun times.
I was always too scared of laser tag(I thought it was going to be too dark) so I didn't try laser tag until I was about 9. Who knows, Crecente, maybe Tristan is a King Leonidas in the making. In a few years he'll be saying "THIS IS SPARTA!!!"
ahhh i remember laser tag!!! There was here were I live in Sherman Oaks CA, don't know if it still there.But it was fun times!!! But then my friend open up a paintball place so I went there instead. That should next year's party Brian!!! I can image it now......Tristan getting headshots on you!!!! hehehehehehe
An awesome day for an awesome kid!
Heh. I remember laser tag fondly.
Except, of course, when there were packs of 10 kids at a time in a free-for-all game trying to chase me down.
Eventually I lost all except one of them, so I cracked him upside the face with the gun, told him to bugger off, and then ran away. They didn't chase me anymore, and I would have ended up in first place if it wasn't for those meddling kids bringing my death count up.
I think he had a lot of fun beating his dad in laser tag:)
@RPharazonius:
The perfect thing to do in free for all if you're grouping up though is to surreptitiously shoot your teammates in the back and claim it came from another direction. XP
There comes a day in any fathers life when he is beaten by his kid for the first time. After that, things will never be the same again.
This normally happens when a kid gets around 15-16 years old. Perhaps Brian is getting old fast, or Tristan just maturing like hell.
Anyway, perhaps you should keep your focus on shooting digital characters, instead of trying to keep up with real life hyper-energetic kids in a lasertag/paintball environment
It's ok to get older, just embrace the fact...
Sweet, can we hear about the time you went to the store to pick up some milk?
Kids today have no respect for autorithy!
Happy Birthday, Tristam! And keep shooting your dad! (He deserves it for his Mario Kart bragging.)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Little Man!!!
Happy Birthday Tristam!
@neoraul20: Sorry, Tristan!
