$100.75 million opening day results for the Iron Man flick helped boost Marvel's sales for the first fiscal quarter to $112.6 million, the company announced today. While sales are down over the same period last year when the company raked in $151.4 million, Marvel said Iron Man was the 10th best opening weekend ever and the second-best non-sequel film debut ever, second only to Marvel's Spider Man. In total, Iron Man has generated about $201 million globally to date.
Marvel will no longer be involved in direct toy operations, it said, to increase its focus on entertainment and licensing opportunities. The company is also looking ahead to its next three years of character franchises — including an Iron Man 2 film to be released on April 30th, 2010.
Following the Iron Man sequel in April, Marvel will follow up with Thor on June 4th, 2010. Also up ahead? An "Avengers-themed summer," with two Avengers movies planned for May (The First Avenger: Captain America) and July of 2011 (The Avengers). The results announcement didn't reveal whether video game tie-ins were planned for the upcoming films — but it did show that they're working on a Spider-Man musical with music and lyrics by U2's Bono and The Edge.
Marvel chairman Morton Handel said, "Marvel's self-produced feature film slate launched this past weekend with a performance that firmly establishes Iron Man as a major new film franchise, and the Company eagerly awaits the June premiere of The Incredible Hulk, Marvel's second self-produced film. In addition, Marvel has been investing in other important areas of growth such as the Internet where, to lead the Company's newly formed Global Digital Media Group, Marvel recently announced the hiring of Ira Rubenstein. Marvel has a strong foundation to build from, and the Company is adding infrastructure to maximize these opportunities."

Heard mixed reviews on the movie, someone wanna give me a brief thought on whether or not this is worth my ten dollars at the local cinema?
Awesome movie. Im going to be really disappointed if they screw it up like they eventually did with Spiderman :(
That would be nutty if the Avengers movie keeps all of the current actors.
The Ocean's 11 of the Marvel Film universe. D:
@AndrewG009:
...Who the hell gave it a bad one? o.o;
Go see it. I didn't follow Iron Man at all other then that he was a guy in a suit that shot lasers, and I liked it a lot.
@AndrewG009: If you like gadgets and character development with your explosions and actions scenes, go see it. If you expect one fight sequence to lead right into the next, then this movie wont be explosiony enough. :P
@AndrewG009: It is definitely worth your ten dollars. I only had a passing interest in Iron Man the character and I thoroughly enjoyed the movie.
@AndrewG009: Yes... RDJ as Tony Stark is awesome. Also wait till the credits end :-D. Little something something there for fans.
Great action movie, it really enjoyable especially if you like the Marvel universe in general. Some discrepancies in the original, but a great adaptation nonetheless.
@AndrewG009: The movie was entertaining and the action was a blast. If you are a fan of Iron Man or just a fan of action movies, this movie will suit you just fine.
I loved Iron Man it and I'm already looking forward to a sequel.
As for the Avengers... I'll remain cautiously optimistic, but when you put too many cooks (superheroes) in the kitchen (one movie), it can quickly go south. It's hard to make a character-driven story when you have to tell many separate stories in under 2 hours.
I hope that first Avenger title dies before Cap makes it to the big screen.
Okay...I know there's an Iron Man video game...but c'mon...
But how is this story, "Gossip, news and leaks for obsessive gamers."
It's not. This belongs on Box Office Mojo, Cinematical, or any of the other movie focused sites.
Maybe we'll get some Miley Cyrus news on here soon too!
I always found Iron Man kind of lame and I thought the movie rocked, so check it out.
@AndrewG009:
I'd definitely say its worth the money, but 10 dollars? You are seriously getting ripped man. My theater sells tickets for $5.50.
I've seen the original Captain America, I really think it's one of those movies that don't need remade. It reminds me of Billy Zane in The Phantom -- actually, pretty much any Billy Zane movie, he's pretty much awesome -- in that it's like a time-capsule of my childhood that should be preserved.
Anyway, I'm all for an Avengers movie.
Robert Downey Jr. is a great anti hero. He really seemed interested in giving a good performance, instead of cashing in. I think Christian Bale is going to get a rough time for his Dark Knight performance this summer.
I think Downey has set the bar for charismatic alcoholic weapons manufacturer superheroes.
@AndrewG009: I know very little about Iron Man but I LOVED the movie. You should definitely go see it.
movie was ok
I guess youre an iron man fan you'll enjoy it. if not , save your money
I watched it twice. thought it was pretty good.
It was actually good.
All the marvel videogames, however, continue to disappoint.
So much for GTA ruining it's box office receipts...looks like hollywood might need to try harder to find scapegoats.
Iron Man is an exceptional movie, faithful to the character and enjoyable even to the person in our group who couldn't give two licks about superheroes.
The movie used humor liberally, but it wasn't Michael Bay humor (aka it was actually funny/witty/endearing). The characters are likeable, the story well-crafted, the pacing expert. It is a highly recommended movie.
@diablodevil2: @NitrousO: @Hauler: @Rabidsquirrel: @PatMan33: @GARlock: @Sir_Crocidile:
Thanks everyone, I'm sold! And yeah, I agree, ten bucks is pretty steep.
@AndrewG009: recived a 94% approval on Rotten Tomatoes, if anything I'd pay 50 bucks for a movie worth that
@AndrewG009: How? It's got 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In other news, I'm really glad Marvel is self-producing their films now. I feel like this will lead to more quality and less sub-par ones.
dammit i must see this flick pronto! i knew RDJ would not disappoint!
Robert Downey Jr. has been training his whole life for this role, and he pulled it off perfectly!
@Sullyville: The X-Men Legends series and Ultimate Alliance were pretty excellent in my opinion.
@youruglyclone: Its much easier to find scapegoats than really bad writing, directing, acting. Hence why they are in love with blaming it. D:
Myself, my 3 year old son and my girlfriend all loved it. Very good movie even if you know nothing about Iron Man.
Spider-Man musical with music and lyrics by U2's Bono and The Edge
o_O ?!?
@bangbangblah: Ultimate Alliance had Deadpool, it's hard not to be excellent when you have him.
Dammit when will Marvel learn that less is more? Both the x-men and spider-man movies were great and there were only two of each LALALALALAI'MNOTLISTENINGLALALA
However they are both first stringers,the Avengers and Thor just don't have that recognition outside of the U.S. and comics geeks.
The All-American super-soldier isn't exactly the most popular images at the moment it will be interesting to see just what they can do with it.
Is he still dead? or is he just comics-dead? I've rather lost touch with the current goings on.
Hmm a zombie/superhero movie with the hero being the rotting corpse of what was once the embodiment of the American dream, trying to bring down a society as corrupted as him, sounds like a Uwe "toilet" Boll film in the making.
This just baarrrrrrley has to do with video games. In essence though, the story, does not.
Don't go into the movie with any expectations and you'll like it.
What in the hell--mixed reviews?! This is quite possibly my favorite superhero movie. I am sooo in love with Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. He got the role down to a science.
It's already been decided that Iron Man is going to be a trilogy and all the actors have signed on to show up for all three. It takes true lovers of the comic to act--not wannabe actors like there are for X-Men (even though it really doesn't need another movie).
I really want to get my tiny, girly paws on some Marvel comics.
@teh_joe:
thank you! I was kinda concerned that no one else seemed to pick up on it..... that sounds like a disaster....
unless it's off broadway and doesn't see cinematic release for another 30-40 years when some happening new director pushes the envelope by adapting the cult classic spiderman musical.... and even then.....
Movie good...Game bad.
An Avengers film which keeps the original actors for each member of the team sounds way better than DC's cursed Justice League movie.
What about Antman? It's being directed by Edgar Wright!
I loved this movie. It was pretty much the only superhero movie I've seen where I didn't sit, tapping my foot impatiently during the character development scenes, waiting for the next fight scene to start (I'm looking at YOU, Superman Returns!). Downey's a total genius in the role, probably since he's only a half-step away from playing himself as Stark.
Here's hoping we see Rhodey take on the reins of Iron Man, or even War Machine in the sequel! Can't wait.
Great flick, going to see it again for the 2nd time next weekend. I don't even dig Iron Man (outside of Marvel's Ultimate line)
And the movie was the shit!
Robert Downey Jr. did a fantastic job! Good to see a Superhero that's not brooding or wallowing in misery.
I AM IRON MAN!!!
@Weirdwolf: He's alive here, in the UK. From what I'm aware of though, he's pretty much still deceased in the US run of comics.
Marvel Zombies movie? With an Evil Dead tie-in? We can only dream.
@Fallible:
I kept dying.
I'm playing Spier-man 2 at the mo,(my girlfriend picked it up cheap for me.)
OOOH GOD IT'S FUN, not the missions and stuff, the rest of the city can get stuffed, I'm having too much fun swinging around the city. You know now I typed that out it sounded so much better in my head......
Oh and I DEMAND that every game has Bruce Campbell as the in game narrator.
@Fallible:
WOW! flashbacks to reading Captain Britain comics!
Shame they were so crap.
@Weirdwolf: The masses disliked Spider-Man 3, I enjoyed it for what it was - a graphically superior Spider-Man 2. Because lets face it, the best thing about any Spidey game is just swinging around enjoying the environment. I'd give it a try to be honest.
@Weirdwolf:
Meh. They aren't thrilling, I'll give you that.
@code.monkey: +1. although spiderman and ironman were great, i personally thought the X-Men ones were horrible. there are just too many characters to flesh out a story and most of what happened in the movies were all off
@Fallible: i, for one, will need a refresher on the whole avenger group and its characters. you can see me at the local comic story geekyin' it up
Did anyone see the Wii cameo?
... It was probably Pepper's Wii.
meh, doesnt really interest me. the planning of a sequel to this is something studios to as mandatory these days so it doesnt surprise me.
the question is - do we need another sequel to yet another marvel comic book hero movie ? i dont think so. frankly i think its getting a little tiresome.
Iron Man just took the top spot as my favorite comic book movie. Its seriously has everything all the others didn't. I hope the director stays for the sequels. Fingers crossed that the next Hulk movie is just as good (btw there will be an Iron Man cameo).
yyyeeesss!!! Cant. Control. Excitement. For. Avengers. and. Thor. Movies.
*spontneously combusts*
@ KingAlanux:
Yep. My friend and I both saw it &awked at it instantly.
Excellent film by itself. Excellent Iron Man adaptation.
Go see it... there is a reason why is 94% fresh on rottentomatoes.com
@ globones:
need to stop using stoopid ps3 browser.
@NitrousO: I don't think they'll screw up a sequel like they did Spiderman's. Actually I wish they had launched Marvel Studios WITH the Spiderman franchise, they could have saved it.
With that said, I am really excited that Marvel has taken a more pro-active role with its franchises. It hopefully means they have a lot more control over preventing stupid story lines like the one that Spiderman 3 and X-Men 3 threw at us. Iron Man, like everybody else, has taken the top spot in superhero movies for me so definitely an awesome start for the new studio. I really hope they keep the bar high for the movies to come.
So sick of Hollywood and its movies, especially the Super Hero films. Thank god for videogames.
@AndrewG009: The movie was good and certainly worth the cost of a non-matinee ticket. Robert Downey Jr. brought far more talent, wit, and fun to his role than many actors in similar parts.
As far as Marvel taking a more active role in their franchises beyond comics, I do hope they take a long, hard look at what farming things out to second and third-tier Western studios has produced. Personally, I'm hoping someone at Marvel will put two and two together and see that the new Street Fighter 4 engine (which will undoubtedly be powering new Darkstalkers, Rival Schools, etc.) could also be used to craft a new generation of Marvel fighter.
@teh_joe: Someone please, please, please tell me this is a joke. Huge U2 fan, but that sounds like a terrible idea.
I was glad to see that Iron Man did well. I am a huge movie snob, but I had fun with my son at this.
Rotten Tomatoes has a 93% rating for the movie based on 164 reviews so that's pretty darn good for a comic book movie.
I also saw it Sunday and I have to admit, it's definitely one of the best comic book movies I've seen in a while. Hopefully Marvel can carry on this momentum with The Incredible Hulk.
Ok, I got goose bumps when I read Thor and Captain America.
I loves me some Thor! They better not gay it up! Ultimate Thor please!
Shit! I didnt stay after the credits. Someone PM me what happened!
