My son has one of those cool remote control R2D2 robots, the one with a little cup holder that is absolutely perfect for holding an ice cold can of beer.... and it sits under a thick layer of dust in the corner of his room, housing his one very cool hat. McWhertor would be proud. Me? I'm just bitter.
And now even more so when I see what could have been. Someone took one of those babbies and turned it into a projector that supports a whole slew of inputs including game consoles. That's right, you can play the Force Unleashed on a 260-inch picture coming from R2's head. Gets no cooler than that.

Sadly that projector is 480p
That is still full of win!
Why would McWhertor be proud? What am I missing here?
That thing is well over a year old, too. IGN had lots of coverage on it in early 2007.

yeah, it is awesome, but a non-HD system? No thanks.
Non-HD, but star wars related. Do want, but not willing to sell my soul over.
I miss back when everybody thought the Wii packed a 3-d projector under the flap.
wasn't this thing the price of a mid-size sedan or something?
3k
3k for a non-HD projector?
I mean, I am a huge star wars nut.. but damn... that sucks.
Just wait till they roll out an HD model next year.
How are babbies formed?
@Jon_Danger:
The real R2 was greyscale, flickery, and probably about 100p :p
@Jon_Danger: It's not, it's 1024x768, which admittedly isn't 720p (1280x720) but it's over double the pixels of 480p (640x480).
I wouldn't care about it only being 480p if it was a reasonable price but at $3,000 it should at least be 720p but preferably be 1080i
@photoboy:
I just read 480p on some statsheet at one of the websites selling it.
OMG, that is so awesome, i'd seriously consider sexing it.
@Jon_Danger: Ah no worries. I dug around on their website and found a PDF with the specs which claim it's XGA.
You have to be so careful with projectors specs, they're always advertised as 1080p or 720p but when you dig into the specs you often find that their their native resolution is much lower at only 800x600 or 1024x768 and it does the HD resolutions by downscaling the image! It's a total con IMHO, but they seem to get away with it.
This thing is SO not worth $3000. For $3000, you could buy a VERY HIGH QUALITY projector, running true 1080p (1920x1080), throw in a DVD player that can play the same stuff, throw in a 5.1 home theater in a box stereo system, and have money left over to make your own remote-control R2D2 that can do more than just go forward and turn one direction while backing up.
i would love if someone did the same with a ROB
@Dreamwriter:Look at it from a Star Wars Fans prespective.
"I bought a life sized R2D2 for $3000? Steal! ...and something here about it being able to project things..."
A guy who has $3000 to freely spend probably doesn't care of all the other stuff he could've got instead with the money. Hell, if I did I probably wouldn't either.
It's a R2-D2 projector!
IT"S A R2-D2 PROJECTOR!!
What better way to run an sci-fi convention video room or a video game event!
Ogre want!
OGRE NEEEED!!
A really expensive piece of old technology that only gets love because of the nostalgia and gimmick factor? Sounds like a perfect display for Wii fans!
@Grey Gecko: *to see that
the Wii looks like ass on a 107inch HD projector. so I'd never use this one. looks wiked tho. congrats on the mod.
Video over at Gizmodo:

Nice.
I would kill someone's mother for that!
Holy Underwear! I MUST have one!!!
this is old news, I saw this at Celebration IV over a year ago. It's awesome though. He walks around and everything.
It sucks that its 480p though, and expensive as hell.
This is way cool.
I'm not a fan of Star Wars ... but damn that looks sweet. My version would be a wheelchair or creepy stuffed bunny ... or better yet Pyramid Head!
I think I saw that at DigitalLife last fall. Didn't bother to check it out really. I just walked by it and raised a brow.
Ive seen this before. Mind you, I needed it then and I need it now. I'd settle for that little remote controlled one in the short term. But I cant find that little bugger in canada. I havent looked. But Im sure i cant find it.
I wouldn't buy it, as R2D2 doesn't project video from his camera (eye).
Yeah, it's got to be pretty cool to grow up in the 21st century. They've even made humdrum activities like brushing your teeth fun. Back when I was a kid, I was lucky to find a toothpaste that didn't taste like minty fresh battery acid!
Pussymagnet for sure.
Slightly old news, but still insanely awesome.
@sanyo: ...no, he projects from his projector.
It looks cool, but i wouldn't recommend to buy it, it's way too expensive.
It could get cooler if it were holographic like in the movies.
