Following the poor box office performance for movies released around the time Halo 3 came out, the film industry began to blame the major game release for causing the poor attendance rather than the poor quality of their films. Insiders began to speculate that the release of Grand Theft Auto IV would have significant impact on this last weekend's big movie release, Marvel's Iron Man. Well consider the whole video game versus movies theory shot down, as Iron Man earned an estimated $104.3 million this weekend including preview showings on Thursday, the second-highest grossing opening weekend ever for a non-sequel behind Spider-Man. I did my part, seeing the film twice over the weekend, and enjoying it immensely both times. Considering the fact that Iron Man is much lower on the public's radar than Spider-Man and the fact that GTA was a multi-platform release compared to the 360-exclusive Halo 3, we can safely assume that poor movie performance can still be blamed on poor movies.
'Iron Man' Blasts Off [Box Office Mojo]

Comments
Agreed!
Well the secret teaser in the end of the movie alone was worth seeing the movie twice. I literally ran up and down the theater freaking out! ASSSEEEEMMMMBBBBLLEEEE!
I got GTA and went to see Iron Man.
Like I said in Plunkett's post, GREAT MOVIE!
Haven't seen the movie yet, but I want to. I might go after class on Tuesday or something.
Honestly, this was great news. I think it was ridiculous for people to make the assumption that people who bought GTA IV wouldn't go and see Iron Man.
That is some absurd logic there. It's like saying that because The Dark Knight is coming out in theaters, no one is going to be renting Batman Begins or watching tv that week.
Iron Man kicks serious ass. For me, the only mildly dissapointing part in the movie, was that the main villain could use his power armor like a pro without having once set foot on it, after Stark himself having spent the entire movie learning.
Well, I have yet to see it and I feel like a cockbag, but I will go soon. That had nothing to do with Grand Theft Auto IV, although the multiplayer has been taking up most of my time.
GTA IV multiplayer > Call of Duty 4 multiplayer
Yeah, I said it!
So GTAIV wasn't the Second Coming? Awwwwww! I had my Armageddon T-shirt on and set up lawn chairs and coolers on the front lawn and everything! What am I going to do with ten pounds of potato salad!?
Also due to the fact that Halo 3 is a much better game than GTA 4.
Please don't hate me for this!
@rzac30: WTF. I haven't seen the movie yet.
Thanks, jerk.
@rzac30: Avengers Assemble!
I did both! GTA IV Tues~Thus afternoon, with Iron Man 8pm Thursday, since my local was doing a sneak-peak.
Very simple, follow my advice, it works like this: Make an awesome game, and it will be played. Make and awesome movie, and it will be watched.
Can anyone even recall what movies came out around Halo 3 time? Neither can I, but I didn't buy Halo 3 either, so what do I know?
I can't believe that anyone thought a game release would make a movie do poorly. That would be like blaming a poor movie sales because of a Harry Potter book getting released that weekend.
Oh, wait...never mind.
Exactly! The movie industry keeps blaming everything else except themselves. Why are games doing so well now? Mainly because they are offering greater entertainment value than your average movie! Most movie release lately have been terrible.
So finally a quality true blockbuster film comes along, and they make tons of money. Wow, who would have thought that would happen? Yea....me too. *sigh*
On a side note, I am not a comic book guy but I always thought Ironman was a big name Marvel character? I always knew about him since I was little and so did my friends.
@rzac30: And they picked the PERFECT man for the role too, didn't they? Don't spoil it now. ;)
@rzac30: There were people in the theater giving each other highfives after seeing it. Very weird.
Bought GTA IV and went to see Iron Man. Who says you can't do both? I've never been much of an Iron Man fan (Been more of an X-men guy for years), but the film was alright. It's good that it did so well, because having more marvel movies don't bother me one bit ;)
Good movie, good game.
They both deserve to succeed.
Bad game designers and Bad film makers should take note.
I thought piracy was the reason Hollywood only makes billions (small b) instead of Billions (capital b).
Oh well, maybe they'll figure out people will actually go see good movies someday. Too bad they never learn from the times they get data disproving their theories. (i.e., I'm sure a big [but bad] movie bombing will still be blamed on a video game by the end of the year.. maybe Wii Fit will mess up Narnia?)
More marvel movies....
"Marvel updated their film release schedule on Monday with Iron Man 2 expected to be released on April 30, 2010.
This is going to be followed by the launch of Thor on June 4, 2010. Marvel believes that the summer is the best time to launch a new franchise, thus giving Thor that slot.
Marvel is also working on two feature films for the summer of 2011. The first will be The First Avenger: Captain America releasing on May 6, 2011, and The Avengers in July 2011."

First weekend of May 2008 - entertainment overload with GTAIV and Iron Man.
I went to see this movie as well. It's worth it. Pretty damn good acting and story. Special effects were a little "tranformerish" but overall it's a good movie.
I though downy's voice acting for the game was really bad and was hoping the movie wasn't corny like the game. Another crappy game if you ask me. Thankfully, the movie is nothing like the game.
Movies that were released at the same time as Halo 3:
1. The Game Plan
2. The Kingdom
3. Feast of love
Ahh..when I was playing Halo 3 I didn't go and watch those movies. Also, when I was sitting at home and had nothing to do but wonder what was playing in the cinema because I'd like to go see a good movie I didn't watch those movies..
@megaStryke:
Make an Iron Man helmet and gloves out of Potato Salad.
@rzac30:
I was told that when I went to see the movie to stay after the credits. Thanks for ruining that.
@Mike Fahey: Title the Avengers movie - "Avengers: Skrulls on a Plane".
Since were talking Iron Mand and GTAIV and we all know PR people read out comments:
R*, JETPACK, DLC.
Make it happen and I will buy your game and a box to play it on.
PS: I love the PC Mod community... bring the game to the PC and ill buy it, too!
@rzac30: @Kanik: Do any of you realize that not everybody has seen the movie yet?
we're going to need a much more circuitous argument than poor movies resulting in poor box office performance if we're going to convince hollywood. they're never going to go for an explination that straightforward.

The only way games factor into this is as a scapegoat.
It helps that Iron Man came out a few days after GTA, but...no regrets here for doing both. :)
Iron Man never seemed that appealing to me.
Big reason: As a kid, I used to watch a lot of Fox Kids Marvel cartoons including X-men, Spiderman, Fantastic Four etc. Every time I watched Iron Man or *ugh* Silver Surfer the ratio of dialog vs action was unforgiving.
I remember I would sit through watching him talk about his problems with others, be lonely, go fly somewhere with his suit for peace...do something dammit!
Marvel must of felt obliged to show a deeper meaning to some shows. I'm going to make a safe bet here and say maybe the influence of Iron Man to others probably came from the comics.
"aw no one is gonna show up :D they are all too busy playing gta!" I said as we walked to the back of the line behind the building >< still got in though :P freakin awesome movie!
I didn't like the movie too much.
Downy was a great pick to be Tony Stark, though, I'll give the movie that much. The rest of the movie was fairly poor, IMO. It reminded me, sort of, like the X-Men movies. I hated those, though. Iron Man is at least decent. Too many stupid special effecy-special effects. Looks way too "Dumb" and artificial... and not much at all like the comic book.
I hate special effects that look out of place, and a LOT of them do. Like, for example, the touch panel on a glass door. I mean, come the hell on. Totally out of place.
Also, what the hell is up with The Dude being a villain! :(
a "ha ha" to all those who would even consider that somehow game sales would have any bearing on movie box office, especially for a superhero movie. imo the type of demographic that would buy GTA (or Mario Kart, another kinda big release) is the same type that would go see Iron Man.
@Figcoinc: Yes, I would say that there is more "shovelware" in the movie industry than the game.
I ~really~ enjoyed the movie, alot of fun. and yeah RDJ really owned that part.
I would LOVE to see just one analyst come out and say "well...we were wrong. Turns out Hollywood had just been making horrible movies all along." I'm glad Iron Man did so well, because it definitely deserved to. Had it not been a good movie, and done poorly, I bet we would have gotten reports on everything from GTA4 to the recessions "ruining the blockbuster movie season."
@rzac30: You know how excited you were to see that at the end? Well you just RUINED it for everyone else who hadn't gotten a chance to see it.
People, STOP saying anything specific about the story of Iron Man. a lot of people have not yet seen this movie and for now the most you should be saying is "It was good/bad."
Cut it out. You should know better than this.
Iron Man was bad ass.
I'd see it again, cant wait for the blu-ray.
@otimus: The effects on Iron Man was actually quite decent and I would say better than most blockbusters. It helps that the filmmakers actually hired Stan Winston and his company to create working full-scale Iron Man Mk1 and 2 and Iron Monger suits.
Plus, I don't know what you've been reading but the way the film looked is closer to the way Iron Man was done during it's hey day. It also helps that Adi Granov was involved in designing the suits and look of the movie.
I rank this one as just below Batman Begins and the first Superman in terms of origin story for superhero movies.
I'm waiting for the excuse to come out that the gauntlet was thrown down by analysts who challaenged gamers to go out and see the movie, and get up from the console.
No one likes to be wrong... and the analysts, and executives who thought it would do bad because of GTA4, also like to stay in the news. Someone will take (false) responsibility for this.
Hey people, relax, rzac30 didn't ruin anything at all. Just go and see the movie and stay past the credits. Nothing more needs to be said.
@rzac30: Yeah man! Everyone who was still in the theater when I saw it went nuts at that last scene. Fantastic!
@djkibblesnbits: Uh, you forget the people who actually read the source material and know what his catch phrase was. Yeah, he ruined it for me.
Iron Man was fantastic. I'v always liked Iron Man but after Civil War not so much. Now, he has shot up in my book to star status.
This is probably my second all time fave superhero movie after batman begins. And the extra thing after the credits made me have a total nerd-gasm. I did not see that coming at all.
"...we can safely assume that poor movie performance can still be blamed on poor movies. "
DING! We have a winner right there.
Wow, Avengers eh? Thats pretty cool. Have yet to see Iron Man but am definitely going this weekend. Glad to hear its actually pretty good. The game on the other hand...
@megaStryke: The same thing anybody would do...throw it at children.
@Puzzle: I'm having serious difficulty.
@rzac30: Careful man, even hinting at end stuff will trigger some of these people.
...but so did I
It was good.
I saw Iron Man and bought GTA.
Yes, stay through the credits
for a treat.
Oh, also, the
Avengers movie is
planned for July 2011.
[en.wikipedia.org]
@Derigor: I'm sure your intent with that statement was entirely innocent, but I sorta hope SOMEONE on here saw this...
In any case, my favorite part was actually the end BEFORE the credits... That had me rolling on the floor! Well, not literally... The floor in the theater is pretty gross...
Ohhhh, waittaminute. If you're talking about who I think you're talking about...then it's the worst kept secret in comic-book movie history.
Still...be a little more cautious guys. I can't see the movie (nor attempt to toast yer ass in GTAIV Fahey) until I'm done with my exams and I'm sure others are in the same boat, so please play nice.
Man, the movie is great. It makes you really want to be an engineer _AND_ and pompous asshole.
@Puzzle:
'Also due to the fact that Halo 3 is a much better game than GTA 4.
Please don't hate me for this! '
No.
Subjectively Halo 3 is a better online multi-player game, a far worse single player game, and a very unsatisfying sequel. Halo 1 was sort of interesting, sort of a UT with a decent story line. Halo 2 and 3 were derivative tripe with decent online multi player and nothing else.
Meh. Iron Man was good, but not great. Robert Downey Jr. was excellent as Tony Stark and played the role near-perfectly...but that's it. The movie had nothing else going for it. The villains were weak and cliche, the supporting characters were lifeless and boring, and the last half of the movie seemed rushed and underwritten.
Maybe I'm just getting harder to satisfy with movies because I don't like being a nick-picking critic. I wanted to really like this movie, and as great as RDJ's performance was, it just didn't make the movie any better than good. Maybe a sequel will deliver.
Despite buying GTA I still managed to watch two movies this weekend. Iron Man and Labyrinth. David Bowie bulge made me uncomfortable.
I think the fact that Marvel is now signing up every one of these actors to appear in other movies is great.
1. The actor will always have work. RDJ is appearing as Tony Stark in the Hulk (post Iron man, so he's already the super hero.)
2. The sheer amount of on screen characters with back story will grow. Instead of one off characters like the end of the first Xmen we'll never see again.
