This morning Xbox 360 owners get their first shot at truly being Bourne. Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Conspiracy gets the demo treatment this morning on Microsoft's platform, bringing the fast-paced, close quarters combat of the movie trilogy to the smaller, more interactive screen. Be sure to check out Flynn's eyes-on impressions from last month to help you decide whether or not you want to commit 1.24GB of your precious hard drive space to High Moon's take on the spy game, 100% Matt Damon free.

I'm still not sure what he (Matt Damon) was thinking about the video game being too violent while the movies were fine. Oh well, I may check this out anyway.
It's worth a download. . .
I wonder if Sony is gonna release this Tomorrow as part of their Gamer Day surprise. I can't wait to test it out soon if it they will. Also, they need to play that Moby song non-stop through the game. Epic win.
Sweet, I can't wait to play this, despite not having Matt Damon...
@Jechticknight:
Gamer Day surprise?
I really want to give this one a go since the videos leading so far have looked really interesting so far. I only wish I wasn't stuck at work for the next five hours.
Great, i'm on a strict Matt Damon diet.
Oh, fuck. No Europe.
I want to love this game because it's Bourne and everything Bourne is usually good, but the videos I've seen it looks like the same shit over and over again. I dunno I'll see in 6 hours.
@Sparx:
I was surprised at the Haze demo dropping on a Tuesday..so anything else is in effect a surprise for me. I don't mean anything official from their mouth.
No Europe? WTF? First two MOVIES were happening in EUROPE goddamit!
Revenge of Europe on Microsoft will be even more violent than the game!

@Soralinkyuna: I find that statement interesting as the original Ludlum books are quite old now.
There was no Damon then and Bourne was pretty good, if not totally different from the movies.
For anyone who liked the movies, I recommend the books, the stories diverge quite a bit.
Though many people might not appreciate the original Bourne as he was somewhat more human, and somewhat less badass.
@Slorg: That's what made him Bourne. That's what made the books so good.
@Jechticknight: It will be released on Thursday, along with the GRID demo.
This is only a demo, but without the small scenes and even the overarching scenes that are in the film the game just feels flat. And I have a feeling that these scenes will not be in the game. It's going to play a 20 second cutscene between every mission and be just like every other action game out there. Really does make me sick after all these years to still see the wrong way to make a game like this. I think this is why I like Metal Gear So much. Every scene leads into the next in a logical way and the game takes its time. I would take the long scenes of Metal Gear over the short scenes of every other game out there. Put me in the world and keep me their damnit. Here's hoping the game actually has the character moments. Sadly after playing the demo while the game is has very cool camera moves and cinematic execution there are a few cases where gameplay is taken away from me that I personally would rather have left with me. Let me jump out of the plane, not just grab a parachute.
@Sparx:
Thursday for the SCEE folks..Just Haze/Condemned 2 for the Tuesday Sony update. Kaz's video will be Thursday too.
The European demo is coming out next week according to Major Nelson. I'm interested to hear about this one, but GRiD is what i'm waiting for!
between Age of Conan beta on PC, GTAIV on 360, and the Metal Gear Online beta, I just don't have the time for Movie to Game translations..
@Slorg:
The books were so much better than the movies.
You know I was not impress at all with the preview. Looks like any other damn game...So what you get to pick up objects and use it as a weapon. Still plays the same as any other unimpressive game. I think you guys love the presentation that they sent you rather than the game itself. Don't let them buy you out like that...judge the game...not the cool junk they gave you. If you can truly say you love the game...then..I'll eat chicken feet. Hell I do that already...but I'll do it in front of your face.
Kotaku, when posting these "this just appeared on Xbox Live" posts, is there any chance you could actually say before the jump what region you are referring to? If something is US only, it'd be nice to know before clicking the link.
I played this demo a few days ago at the college tour, and it is extremely badass.
honestly, these game reminds me of the movie game mission impossible. If u had played that old game, u will know what, i am talking about.
Hey what gives???! I can't download the effin thing, it says my region is not supported. I HAVE A US ACCOUNT!
Unless someone can convince me otherwise, no Damon = No Download.
Sorry, but if you're going to do a tie-in, at least get the guy everyone wants to play to star in the game. This series is ripe for opportunities to add to the awesomeness of the movies, and yet they go with some protagonist I couldn't give two shits about.
And yeah, I know the books are awesome, but Damon kicked ass in those movies, you've got to admit.
@dionion: Haze is Tuesday.
@splines: First, Damon didn't want to collaborate on the game. You can find plenty of post about it on the net and here on Kotaku. Secondly, they're going from the source material, which is the book.
The Damon thing is no make or break issue, games are about gameplay people, not pretty faces.
@splines: "This series is ripe for opportunities to add to the awesomeness of the movies, and yet they go with some protagonist I couldn't give two shits about."
They're both Jason Bourne. Do you really have that much of a hard-on for the actor that you can't see they're playing the same character?
Either way... it's a free demo.
I don't care if it doesn't have Daemon, but the game itself brings nothing new to the table. It's the same game as any other game with Jason Bourne name on it. Mediocre.
No Damon is kind of a bummer (since i am a fanboy of the movies) but as long has i'm jackin up fools Bourne style I honestly don't care.
And don't give me crap about how the books were better than the movies. Thats like a universal truth with any adaptation. Of course ludlum's books are better. Does that make me like the movies any less? No.
Load times are way too long for a game where a simple missed button push results in having to start again. Escaping from the embassy sucked because of the loads. There are lots of instances where you'll die, or get caught and go back to the last checkpoint. However, the fact that there are checkpoints - lots of them - is a redeeming feature. If I had to restart the level everytime I failed, this game would be terrible. But it's actually really fun once you accept that there are frequent, yet simple quick time events. The first time one appeared, I (of course) failed and had to go back to the checkpoint. The second time I mashed Y in anticipation, but the button changed to X, so I failed again. From then on, I knew it was random and to expect it.
Playing this after hours of GTA was interesting. There's no auto-lock, so the gun gameplay was more challenging, but compared to GTA's driving, Bourne reminded me of Tron.
The coolest part, as expected, is the hand to hand combat and takedowns. The best part of the demo being the boss fight against some escaped terrorist. It was odd though...as the boss got weaker, the takedowns he attempted were more frequent, and out of the dozen or so times he tried, I think he only got me once. So the fight actually became easier as it progressed.
And some guy piped in at the end telling me to get off the plane before it went down, which was very non-Bourne-esque. Who is this random friend I have, and why is he giving me advice I should already know?
Bourne Conspiracy is the only beat-em-up game I can think of in which you are forced to sit back and watch cut-scenes wherein your avatar does nothing other than run toward enemies and beat them up.
Bach, Quick-time events! I dominated the boss fight for 5 minutes, then a single quick-time event at the conclusion of the fight killed me. Garbage.
And someone remind why the goons in this game are still standing up and coming back for more after taking dozens of jabs, hooks, and roundhouse punches from Jason Bourne.
As somebody said: the embassy mission looks exactly like Mission Impossible 64 was supposed to look, all those years ago, when the CGI workstation renderings were used for the previews. Heh.
I'm convinced that the closest thing to becoming Jason Bourne is to play GTAIV, because no other game has integrated driving and action so well, in Manhattan to boot.
The shooting sequences in the demo somehow felt a lot like Time Crisis with a console controller, which is a good thing in my opinion. And the HUD interface was so clean that I felt physically refreshed after playing it.
wasn't expecting one (this soon, even). definitely will give this one a try
I liked this demo overall. At first i was confused because i had no warning a quicktime event was going to pop up. And then when it popped up again it was a different button. But i enjoyed the hand to hand combat. It was fun. If i was going to complain it would be that Bourne seems to pull of the same combos over and over. i tried hitting the buttons in different patterns but it only gave me like 2 or 3 differnt styles.
Gun combat seemed okay. Nothing fancy, but i enjoy the takedowns.
The only thing i hated was the voice actor for bourne and the driving. both were horrible.
i may check this out when it releases though
Just completed the demo its awesome, congrats High Moon studios!
If I can kick people's asses with hard-back books and pencil erasers, I may just let it cut into my GTA IV time.
The demo was terrible. It's QTE: The Game. Even when it's not a standard QTE (which made up about half the demo, as near as I could tell) it still felt like it, because the on-screen actions didn't feel like they had anything to do with what buttons you were pushing. The hand to hand combat felt almost turn-based: you throw a x-x-y combo, then you hold a to block while the enemy does an x-x-y combo. sometimes you press b to trigger a cool looking cinematic of your character doing something badass. Then you do an x-x-y combo.
Terrible.
After playing it my only gripe is with the driving. It's God awful. And having Marie go "JASON D: AAHHUUH!!!" every 10 seconds doesn't help either.
Matt Damon is pretty much synonymous with "Jason Bourne". So if he's not in the game, it probably wont actually be a bourne game to many people. I picture this game getting like a 66/100 metascore.
I liked the hand to hand bits of the demo. When they threw in the gun it just turned into every other action game.
I don't give a shit about matt damon.
God, this was terrible. The melee combat was entertaining, but the QTEs are just corny. The gun-play was very subpar... and my god, could the driving be any worse? Mario Kart has better mechanics than that, seriously.
I think it's pretty ridiculous that they're creating near carbon copies of some scenes from the movies yet refuse to recreate Matt Damon. Can there really be any other reason than royalties?
Oh well. This, just like nearly every other demo, was free fun...
...but I'm convinced to pass on a purhase.
The demo was garbage. Too many parts turn cinematic and demand random button interactions to keep Bourne alive. That's not so bad. It was done in RE4 and TR Legend, but this game gives you no time at all. Maybe half a second to react to which random button the game has decided for you to press. 9 out of 10 times you'll choose the wrong button. That's if you can press it fast enough. Fail and get ready for a long ass load time. These moments come up too often and make the game more of chore than fun.
Maybe it should have been like Myst? haha
