In the latest LEGO Universe update the Colorado-based developers spill the beans on the upcoming LEGO massively multiplayer online game's economy and storyline.
LEGO Universe design director Brian Booker says that the game will have an "overarching epic storyline about the origins of LEGO Universe and the minifigs that inhabit it."
I can't tell everything about the game just yet, but maybe I can give you some hints... Aside from just playing games or trading and socializing, the story allows minifigs to team up—and that's when the real adventuring begins. If the teams of little LEGO people are successful in their endeavors, they'll uncover new zones where they can have new and different experiences...
Booker also walks us through the games economy which isn't, it turns out, based on studs.
Turns out that LEGO's are going to be toting around... plastic to buy things.
Essentially, new minifigs enter LEGO Universe with nothing: no money, no bricks, no stuff. Then they go through the world completing challenges, defeating enemies, gathering goods, discovering treasures and unlocking secrets. Along the way, the minifigs find bricks and collect a highly valuable currency— plastic.
Using plastic, you can buy and sell goods to do things like customize your minifig; all the shops and vendors in LEGO Universe take plastic!
Since LEGO bricks are actually made of plastic, your minifig can also use it to create the bricks they need for their models or pets. But you could also trade with other minifigs for the bricks you need —so you can conserve your currency by cooperating!

I have been surfing 4chan WAY too much. The first time I read "minifigs" I thought it said, well...you know.
My 2 by 4 brick is better than your brick.
It looks like some of the quotes are missing.
I have yet to play a Lego videogame. Are they really that good? I might have been too quick to dismiss them.
@DrcAnjel: Nevermind, my mistake. The quote box just isn't colored in the whole way.
I just want to know if I can build things; structures, statues, STUFF. If there is a LEGO universe that doesn't involve building things then I JUST DONT SEE THE POINT.
@vashthestampede: The ones I have played so far have all been quite the pleasant surprise.
I just hope that Lego Universe has the same quality the rest of their series has.
@vashthestampede: So far both LEGO Star Wars game (I'd imagine the Complete Saga is good as well) are awesome. The concept of a LEGO MMO is amazing in and of itself.
I'm just wondering how they plan to make this fun for adults like me who want to go in and mess about, and also fun for kids.
I guarantee the first thing on certain people's minds will be building giant, lego genitalia. and fair play to them. but kids don't need that. Nor do they need the general level of 'adultness' that will come from having adult players.
It really does need a splintered system where under 15s go on one set of servers and over 15s on a different set.
I had no idea this was happening.
All I can think to say is YES x 1,000->0
@tnx3: Oh yeah?
@Atheist Jew: Go ahead and say it. We ALL are thinking it. Just put it out in the open so we can clear the air and get on with business.
@trogam: Not really. It looks like a tiny stud compared to a real brick.
God this game is going to get dirty....
Hummm... Lego... (Homer like drool...)
If you think it's "adults" making the giant lego genitalia....well, define "adult". :)
Over 18? Maybe...
Please please please, bring this to consoles!
It'll never see the light of day on a console - unless Nintendo pulls an awesome internet experience out of no where so Lego can market to their audience
I have been trying to follow stories about this game. I think it's a great idea. I love the console LEGO games, but, I am sure it really won't play like those. It should still be pretty fun!
I can just imagine pulling a 10 figure raid for some ultra rare blue bricks to finish my our fortress.
Please please make this happen.
@megaStryke: And get banned? HAH! No, I think not!
Overarching storyline and zones? Dare we think devoted to specific product lines? The day my LEGO pirate ship storms a castle, or perhaps makes a raid against those accursed Atlanteans will be the day I am complete as a person.
Alternately, if it's possible to cross product lines, the world may finally see a game that natively supports zombie-ninja-robot-monkey-pirates!
@icelight: Aren't these things that any sane LEGO enthusiast could ask for? You and I are kindred spirits...
I hope they use all of the Lego sub-universes (Pirates, Space, Medieval, etc.) and create zones where you can have different types of adventures!!
@tincow: You've never seen second life have you?
I think this might be first MMO i'll actually be willing to play. LEGO is awesome, only because of the building things.
I signed up for the Stargate MMO, but I dont think it'll be as fun as lego mmo
@icelight, shyguy & rubymars: they already said something about that. they want to incorporate different brick sets, but they want to make it fit with eachother, so i'm curious as to how they'll do that.
Because I'mm all for the mixing things, Super scifi building in a jungle setting, or an entire city of classic buildings, castle like, or roman style but with the cars and planes and stuff. a battle between pirates and robin hood.
they cant deny us stuff like that
@zyberteq: It'll be interesting to see how they get the varied sets to work. It'd also be nice if they could, somehow, include some of the franchise sets or set pieces (LEGO Star Wars, Batman, Indy etc.).
@Shyguy:
Not sure if licensed property will get a look in IMO, esepcially if DC ever get round to making some sort of MMO themselves.
All in all though, this seems like a great idea and I can't wait to play it!
Ooh do I want to risk arguably the most important hobby of my whole childhood being destroyed by second life-wannabees?
Such decisions a man must make in this life.:(
sounds interesting
i want to see the different types like the pirate, ninja and knights
@Atheist Jew: Half of 4chan language is adding '-fag' to everything so it's understandable.
Damn, this is gonna eat more of my time than City of Heroes...
At first glans I started thinking that in a Lego mmo you could build your own house, but you would actually have to build it piece by piece, or bloke, whit a Ikea like manual hehe.
"...Hmm, I think its finished, but where do all these pieces go?..."
