What's Old Is New Again

To: Crecente
From: Luke

I did two things on the weekend: saw Helmet play, and saw Iron Man. Both are looking awful spritely for their age. For a 45 year-old superhero, Iron Man's never looked better. That movie is awesome, and these days, I don't walk out of theatres saying that too often. As for Helmet, same story. Page Hamilton's 48 years old, and rocked his ass off harder than most men half his age can manage. Good, good times.

  • Last time I saw Helmet play was at least 15 years ago. On the same topic, I was lucky enough to see one of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones reunion shows this weekend. AMAZING!

  • Saw Iron Man on Saturday. I really loved it, and thats something thats not very commom nowadays("Lord of The Rings" has placed my expectations very high for any movie I go see to the cinema). I even want to buy the game! Sadly, average reviews are putting me off... heres hoping for a quick DVD release.

  • Iron Man is surprisingly brilliant.

  • Aw man, I would love to see Helmet. Meantime is one of my favorite albums. Page is the man.

  • Iron Man made my weekend. Great cast, great script, amazing suit, sweet action, and nary a cheesy moment to be see. I am amazed that such a movie can still be made. To think, 10 years ago, a good comic book movie was simply inconceivable. Now I place Spiderman 2, Batman Begins, and IRON MAN as three excellent contradictions to that claim.

  • It was no Punisher '89 or Ned Beatty Captain America, but that said, Iron Man was really damned good.

  • @catapult37:
I'd disagree, I think the "hidden scene" after the credits was pretty chessy due to an over-the-top black actor I won't mention for fear of pissing off somebody who hasn't seen the movie and doesn't want spoilers (like it's much of s spoil at this point.)

  • I'm really looking forward to the sequels and how well they'll be able to pull them off for Iron Man. Did anyone else notice the comment Rhodes made when he saw the extra suit in Stark's lab? He's totally going to be War Machine in the next movie. Also, there's an extra treat for those who stick around after the credits roll in regard to the next movie.

  • @catapult37: What the hell is wrong with the first batman that Tim Burton directed?

  • helmet? wow! i saw them back in 95 with the rollins band and sausage. i had no idea they were still doing shows.

  • Helmet was actually the first concert I ever went to way back in '94.

A kick ass show and worth every penny. I've seen them numerous times since and I'm always always impressed

  • @Mommar: agreed. "secret" ending was pretty cheesy. rest of the movie was AWESOME

  • @Mommar: *SPOILER*
Have you read the Ultimate's Comic Series? Nick Fury was re-written as Samuel L. Jackson for the story. No joke. They've been planning to have him play Nick Fury for that long.
And it wasn't cheesy, it was awesome.
    *DOUBLE SPOILER*
    And an Avengers movie! WHOO!
    *END SPOILERS*

    So...In conclusion, the movie rocked.

  • @Palladium:
    *SPOILER* response
I'm aware they took Jackson's likeness for the Ultimate's comics. That doesn't justify his silly over-acting. Or attempting to shoe-horn a mention of the impending Avengers movie (which I believe will fail) onto the end of it.

  • I don't get what was so good about Iron Man? I mean the technology was just ridiculously unrealistic, with Jarvis and everything. And the bad guys... Why were they bad again? They'd decided to take over Asia or something? Just for the heck of it.
And Jeff Bridges had gone mad for power why? What was his motivation?

Spider-Man was so much better. You almost had sympathy for the bad guys, and it wasn't over the top unrealistic.

  • The bad guys work for Mandarin. Look him up on Wikipedia, he's Iron Man's main villain.

It's a clue only comic fans would get, the name of the terrorist clan is The 10 Rings, which is a reference to Mandarin's 10 magic rings.

  • I went in with very low expectations, but I agree, Iron Man was indeed AWESOME. I like how they gave the movie a contemporary feel by tying it in with the Afghanistan war. Robert Downey couldn't have been a better choice for Tony Stark. There were lots of comedic moments...brilliant movie! I haven't been this satisfied with a super hero movie since Spider-Man 2/Batman Begins.

  • @eurotrasher:

What!? how is being bitten by a spider then being able to climb walls and shoot webs out of your arms more realistic than a normal man, everyday man in an exo suit.

Ok ok, AI and flying like that is way off but DARPA have been researching exo suits for soldiers since the 50s.

Thats why i liked it more than usual superhero movies, less of this lame super hero shooting lazers out of your eyes bollocks and wearing your underwear on the outside.

It's still far fetched enough to be entertaining but doesn't have me cringe / laugh every 5 seconds due to it being too far from reality.

  • Yeah I know the way Peter Parker turned into Spider-Man was silly, but the Iron Man suit itself didn't really bother me.
It was every moment in his house that made me cringe/laugh, because we all know that 90% of the technology you saw in there was just really far fetched.

Anyways, I'll let you guys enjoy the movie, while I enjoy my Spider-Man.

  • Helmet goodness! Wow I need to dig through those archaic things called CDs...

  • Wait a minute, Helmet is back together? And touring?

Is there a new album on the way? Am I totally out of the loop?

  • @y2kenjination: I had an enormous amount of trepidation about the middle-east setting, but to my surprise they pulled it off with an enormous amount of style and finesse (you know, unlike Frank Miller's idea to have Batman go to Afghanistan and beat up Bin Laden).

It's always been common to place superheroes in war-time scenarios, but I think this is one of the few cases where they approached it from the right perspective.

  • @mind in rewind: Been "together" for a few years now. "Together" in the sense Page Hamilton got some new guys together and started recording albums and touring.

  • @Luke Plunkett: Ah, so in the same sense that Guns N'Roses is "together". Page is still the key, though.

And yes, I'm out of the loop, apparently.

    So, when is Quicksand re-forming?

My best friend and I saw Helmet back in 19XX (don't remember the year). They were with the Melvins and Regurgitator at Deep Ellum Live in Dallas. We were about eight feet from the band and about four feet from the speakers. My ears rang for three days. They did Meantime as an encore. Got split up from my friend about half way through the concert and didn't see him again until I got to my truck and he was laying in the back.

I had to deal with about four or five kids asking me if I had seen Iron Man yet (I'm a teacher). They all know I want to see it because I have an Iron Man background on my computer. All of them wanted to tell me about it.

  • Well, I loved Iron Man.

  • @mind in rewind: New Helmet is good though, Hamilton can still write tunes.

Wish I knew Helmet were coming to Oz, woulda took a day off and went nuts.

  • What's Helmet? At first I thought you meant Hamlet, but I must be living under a rock or something.
    Google to the rescue!
    Iron Man was alright.
