Ah the Wiimote. An elegant weapon, not as clumsy or as random like a blaster. Paired with the Nunchuk, it's pretty awesome too, according to this video from G4, which got an exclusive hands-on with Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for the Wii's duel mode. (Man that was a mouthful).
G4's reporter went as Luke Skywalker, duking it out in a TIE Fighter bay with Asajj Ventress There's saber-slashing and Force-choking galore, all arising from a pretty shrewd use of combinations and reverse moves in both controllers. It's not all lightning bolts and throws, either. Check out that old-school kick to the grill Luke delivers at the end.
The video says you'll get 9 different arenas and 27 characters to choose from, classics to the expanded universe. I know that LucasArts is promising exclusive gameplay for all consoles. But I had the two Jedi Knight games on Xbox, where lightsaber combat was a lot of button mashing and getting lucky. Honestly, if the purpose of this is to at last swing a lightsaber in 1:1 combat, then this is your baseline version.
It's probably going to make me buy a Wii. The question, will it make others do the same?
X-Play Exclusive: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for Wii [G4]

Looks cool, although why was young Luke using force lightning? :-)
I hope you can turn the powerups off.
I'm still not really feeling this Wiimote as a lightsaber thing. Only recognising 5 movements is not really the total control feel I had in mind when I "instantly imagined myself using it as a lightsaber".
A surprising dearth of actual lightsaber wiimote gameplay in that video...
Hmmm, I think the animation looks rather edgy. Maybe it's just because it's so fast paced but it doesn't look that smooth to me.
wow Force Unleashed Duel Mode on the Wii FTW - rockin! And I have to assume MS will do whatever they have to to get their Wiimote clone out by September.
@Owen - yes, I can easily imagine people shelling out for a Wii just to play this.
27 Chars sounds nice. The gameplay looks a little cluttered though, there seems to be way to much going on in the levels that can interrupt a fight.
Oh well, I'm probably still gonna buy it- I just hope it'll be fun.
Yes this star wars fantatics will If they havent already.
Luckily I already have a Wii so I just need to get the game.
I'm not usually one to say this, but the graphics don't look so hot :(
@Vetterli: After been playing games like GTA4 and Skate I have to agree the animations do seem a little brash. Since the game is using Euphoria though I'm hoping the animations meet are expectations from this hype train and more.
It's looks like fun, except I usually play alone at home -- unless it's online. Plus, I'm not sure it's worth it to buy two versions of the game just for that. I'll probably end up just buying the 360 version ... although, the PSP one sounds tempting, too.
So nice to see a Nintento game without their same old boring characters.
Graphics look pretty good for a next-gen wannabe system.
@.digiwalsh: That's the problem. People were expecting a REAL lightsaber game.
...This isn't it.
You'd be better off getting it for PS3 or 360...much, MUCH better graphics.
@Spoony Bard:
The GRAPHICS
Five animations? What makes them think this is going to satisfy anyone's expectations of "Wii Lightsaber Game"?
I'd just like to say that I won't be buying neither Wii or Xbox version: I won't be buying this game. It looks mediocre in all senses of the word. A mid 80 which should be given a solid fifty-something.
It just doesn't look very interesting.
as i recall reading, i think from kotaku a while back that it is not 1:1 light sabe controllers with the wiimote, but it comes close. I'll totally buy it either way.
Graphic whores, unite!
why do the wii graphics look crapier than ps2 games? Isn't the wii suposedly a overclocked GC? Wasn't the GC way more powerful than the ps2?...
No Jar Jar Binks??? Pass.
@Bugged?:
I know this is blog, but I can't take you seriously when you misuse the English language in such an abusive way.
Ahh the mandatory chick... gamers are so predictable.
@Owen: I can't believe you failed to add "A weapon for a more casualage". -.5 geek points man! Only .5 though because its still funny as is :)
I'm not sure, but I think the Wii can do a LOT better than that... Those character models and animations look like the ones in Episode III for the PS2! That sucks! Why can't third parties push the Wii hardware? I know the Wii is not about graphics but come on!!!
Yeah I bet her favorite one is getting stabbed....har har har
The first non first party Wii AAA title in the making if everything works out. The idea of a light saber battle being 'realistic' has been something every starwars fan has wanted since they saw the series
all I ask is that when they include a list of expanded universe character, they play a special cameo to a certain 'kid' we all know and love with a double blade saber ;)
Video looked cool, but you can still count me in for the 360 version.
@Malvolio the Magician: maybe because i'm not english?...
atleast i try. I've seen english people writing way worse than i do.
@coffeehair:
I noticed this too... It's not too polished. Here's to hoping that they pull a semi-overhaul of the graphics and surprise us.
Is it just me, or did the reviewer mispronounce the word "films"? Anyway, 5 moves with a Wiimote and those graphics (I'm talking quantity not quality, the real problem is the framerate) just aren't enough to warrant a purchase.
Gametrailers.tv on Spike TV went to the same LucasArts theater over a month ago and to show the Wii duel mode from Force Unleashed.
@Bugged?:
It's called third parties being morons.
Anyone who knows anything about actual sword fighting knows they cannot program games to 1 to 1 movement for the simple fact that any decent AI could never be defeated by anyone who hadn't been trained in sword fighting. Hence why 1 to 1 swordfighting will never occur in games.
Do people not think that developers actually tried it out? The wiimote can do 1 to 1. Reason it doesn't is because people are not trained swordfighters and would never be able to defeat any AI opponet programmed to fight like a real swordsman.
I'm pretty sure I saw Hoth AND a lava level. Is there Normandy too?
Looks like it will be fun to play. The gameplay reminds me a lot of Powerstone for the Dreamcast, but with Lightsabers.
I'll still probably pick up the 360 version though, unless there's another incentive to pick it up on the Wii.
So far the Wiimote has been a pretty big let down. It's just not responsive enough or sometimes it is too responsive, causing the character to do something unwanted or vice versa. I imagine this title will be a let down, waggle just isn't cutting it anymore. :( I hope I will be wrong come September.
I don't need to want this game too. I know I'll just play the 360 like always but I don't need the regret of not playing it on wii like a few other games.
@Phlycheez: If memory serves, the Wii version is supposed to have something like five extra levels.
I'll probably buy a Wii for Wii Fit, and get this on the 360. The whole swinging the controller like a light saber sounds fun, but I don't know how well it's executed. And I want pretty graphics
@Guerrilla mason:
How the force powers is used is more of the game then lightsaber combat anyway. Force powers on the wii version is where it is at.
I hate you, G4.
I can haz online play?
oh goddammit..........
This makes me want to play the wii version.....but the 360 version is so....purdeh!!!!
WHY LUCASARTS! WHY!!!!!!!!
WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!!!!! D:
@Yetanotheruninspiredscreename: There's also the challenge of actually making a decent 1-1 playing AI.
If it's like Jedi Academy multiplayer, minus guns, plus motion control, it should be good enough. Then again, it's highly unlikely it'll be as good as Jedi Academy multiplayer.
Ok, the discrepancy in visuals and physics between the wii version and the 360/PS3 versions are just too much. Multiplayer, overly sensationalized multiplayer, does not make up for this.
I imagine we'll be grabbing both the Wii and 360 versions at some point. The Wii is most likely but I may shell out the scratch for the 360 just for the online dueling.
Ah JK2...how I miss thee.
*gasp* they do not have their wiimotes properly securd to their wrists!
@RYAMATSU: GTA IV has some pretty choppy animations as well, though. There was plenty of cut scenes where I noticed that the characters were shaking uncontrollably (pretty much every cut scene with Vlad or Faustin).
Cant wait to play the SP of this for over-the-top goodness, but for MP jedi outcast/jedi knight academy put this (and most other games) to shame.
When did morgan webb go blonde? I love more by the day.
Man I'm really gonna be pissed if I have to buy this game 3 times. (PS3, wii and a handheld).
"Stab's gonna be my favourite"
Am I the only one that that that line was wierd?
Graphic Whore: On
@Dauragon C. Mikado: This might be the first game I own on both consoles! :P
A third party game made for the Wii that looks epic and has something that actually people have dreamt about for years? What a mashup... Lucasarts, if you screw this up!!
sorry to say this looks pretty shitty...
Gah, I can't help but get that ps1 star wars fighting game out of my mind when watching this. Still, I am Hoping for the best, a 7.5
@daschupa:
Probably an accurate guess.
Not smooth, and poor animations. All forgiven if we had 1:1 Wiimote:Saber, but wait we dont, its once again just the few motions that can be easily mapped to the directions of a gamepad. Come on guys, use that Wiimote like it was promised.
@Vetterli: Do the graphics really matter? If you want fantastic graphics, go PS3 or Xbox, the Wii is about gameplay, and this seems to deliver that, wiimote lightsaber-ing.
And to everyone who is disappointed because it's not perfect controlls, what other Wii games have? LoZ didn't, and that game was amazing. And I'm pretty sure, but not positive, that No More Heroes wasn't either.
I wasn't really interested in this game at first, seemed like the most exciting aspect of it is the physics engines but other than that it's just another Star Wars game. The Duel Mode got me interested though. Until I found out it's 2 player only, no online or playing against the computer. I never have anybody around to play games with I'd never get to use it.
@ItsSuperEffective: So if the graphics are sub par and the controls are not perfect...why the hell would I be interested in this again?
@Darthvinder:They probably will, after all, there's still 4 more months until the game comes out. Remember Mario Kart Wii? There were some, let's just say unimpressive, screens about a month before the game came out. And now it looks better.
And even so, it's not like the Wii is supposed to be the graphics powerhouse. I don;t know why people expect anything different.
