And nine other songs, including a RickRoll (although, it's not really a RickRoll if you know its coming). Thanks to reader Mrjuandrfl for spotting an anthology of classic songs composed on Mario Paint.
It takes talent and patience to lay down these tracks with that kind of interface, is all I can say. I'm trying to imagine someone working on the percussion for "Never Gonna Give You Up." and can't believe they lasted more than six runs through that opening drum roll without quitting in disgust. Guess that means they got it right on the fifth try.
(And I can't believe I made it through a post about Chocolate Rain without the obligatory move away/breathe in joke.)
We've linked the YouTube video of the Zelda theme and Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" after the jump. The rest can be found at the link.

i was just looking at these exact videos about 1 hour ago. FREAKY... not really tho
No Homestar Runner video?
What, no Pollyanna? Lol, kidding.
You can't do sharps and flats in Mario Paint. This is a different program.
I have been having such a hard time with YouTube lately. I wish I could get these to load!
JUST A SMALL TOWN GIRL! LIVIN IN A LOOOOOONELY WOOOOOORLD! SHE TOOK THE MIDNIGHT TRAIN GOING AAAAANNNNYWHEEEERE!
I dont need no asian knockoff, gimmie Steve Perry or bust.
First Kotaku story to be bookmarked to my browser. I love Mario Paint 'remixes'.
@AjaDL: I haven't ever used Mario Paint, but from the video you can see that it's running in Vista window and the download/upload button in the top right of the window seems rather out of place for a SNES game.
@AjaDL: Also, the whole download/upload text window throws me off. I haven't seen an actual copy of Mario Paint in over 10 years, but I'm pretty sure those were not terms the game used.
It's called Mario Paint Composer, a remake of the SNES game for PC's. Pretty spiffy too!
TomBobBlender is crazy good at remaking old game music in Mario Paint. I hope he gets around to some more Mother series music eventually.
Even better:

These all take too much talent for me to have in a life time.
@Aethyr: You sir, have earned yourself a non-refundable ticket for one "SUPER FUCKING AWESOME INTERNET HIGH-FIVE."
I *love* Mario Paint Composer. Unfortunately, the only things I can make in it are something that sounds vaguely like Suicide Is Painless, and the Halloween theme.
@DangerousDac: I love this song. Especially when it's performed by amateurs!

....including a RickRoll (although, it's not really a RickRoll if you know its coming)...
Yep. Just keep telling yourself that...
Chocolate Rain's just not the same without that guy singing (I have no idea what his name is). But creative idea nonetheless!
I couldn't listen to any of them thanks to YouTube's terrible video player.
What I listened to of Bohemian Rhapsody was pretty horrid, though, actually.
Wow. That's a LOT of free time.

My personal favorite.
Call me a purist, but I like the ones done in the actual Mario Paint game the best. ^^
Here's a link to the program used to compose many of these songs. It's free to download, and is actually more powerful than the original Mario Paint notation tool, with the ability to add accidentals (sharps and flats), and the ability to adjust the velocity level for each note. Look out, Cuebase...

I'd try to make something like this, but I'd probably just get pissed at the program, curse out Mario for ever making non-platforming games, and then cry myself to sleep thinking about my own failures.
And then...waffles.
When the heck are they gonna port this to the Wii VC? Or even better, make a new one!
Oh Mario Paint, how I miss thee.
@Dauragon C. Mikado:
Yes! Oh my god, yes!
@Dauragon C. Mikado: Oh man I cant believe I took me About half way to figure out what song that was...
OT: Thats really cool That there are people that know how to do this. Love me some classic 8 bit music. Or whatever the hell it is
(Sorry if this double posts...)
I love these, but I'm more impressed by the ones that are actually done in Mario Paint. Sure, Mario Paint Composer has no real limit to the length of the song (I don't know how long Mario Paint's is), it can do 5 notes at once (Mario Paint is 3), and it can do sharps and flats, but there's something more impressive when you do it in the real thing and make it sound awesome.
I was happy to get rick rolled there(although i keep telling myself I knew i was going to be). Bohemian Rhapsody...Bohemian Rhapsody....Bohemian Rhapsody..... Wow... ...
I thought this story had something to do with Epic :(
See, this one was done in actual Mario Paint and it rocks.

One on my personal favorites: Mega Man 2 - Dr. Wily Stage 1.

Journey is awesome! :D
I liked the Rick Roll'd one, LoL

Is full of win.
@M: YES!
Mega Man 2 still has one of my favorite soundtracks of any game. Dr. Wily Stage 1 is probably my favorite music from that game as well. I remember being super excited for the remixed versions of the songs on that Mega Man Anniversary Collection. (Can't remember whether the remixes were on GCN or PS2)
@Platypus Man: That's cause FFVI and all its music rocks ;)
The rickroll one is amazing - I love it!
@AndrewDB: TAAAAAKE OOOON MEEEEEEE
TAAKKKKE MEEEEEE ONNNNNN
ILLLL BEEEE GOOONNNE
IN A DAY OR TWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
GOD I love that song.
There's a guy on YouTube under the name AzureDreams777 who does true Mario Paint songs and prefers the limitations of the actual SNES version. The only thing he does that's off is that he uses a game genie code to increase the maximum tempo.
That and there are a lot of others that use purely Mario Paint and do a damn fine job of it, too. But yeah, I'm with GDK on this one. I'm just not a big fan of Mario Paint Composer.

<3 Bohemian Rhapsody video. Awesome!
@Dauragon C. Mikado: I second that. (I've been in an 80's rock revival mood lately :p)
Whoa. I was just today remembering Mario Paint. I still have the old thing somewhere in my stack of old things...
My favourite is still
">Pin*BotDang.The dumb preview window messes up my code. Oh well, it still works.
Let's try this again.
My favourite of the Mario Paint music videos is still Pin*Bot.

They really should release mario paint composer on the Nintendo DS, it would be HOT! Talk about something to mess around with when on the train to school or work!
@Evil Jim: We had Pin*Bot in the TKE House. Great, great, great pinball machine. Top 10.
Needs more Touhou.
@DangerousDac: Goddamnit dude. Now I have to have that song in Rock Band...
Here's an awesome one I found of the MGS theme.

Yes! The Punch-Out Theme song! Hell yes! You know me! And Queen?! Yeah! But, Chocolate Rain, I think I've heard enough of that song! They should've put "What What" by Samwell. LMAO. If you haven't seen that video on YouTube, that's a must see!LOL!

@Beatboxtaun: OMFG!!! i didn't think that was real....damn you! i can't unwatch that....MY EYES!!!!!!
@skullkid: and somehow i STILL get rickrolled....i hate you people!!
The portal song is the best

Very nice, but I still think that the MIDI animator is better:

@Owen Good: We had Pin*Bot in the TKE House. Great, great, great pinball machine. Top 10.
It's my favourite table. The NES game is still among the best video pinball games out there, & I've played a lot. As to the music, I'm learning to play the main theme on the theremin.
Mario Paint Composer's pretty cool, yeah, but I don't think those songs done in it should be held to the same standards as the ones done within the limitations of the actual game. I'm always far more impressed by how people manage to work around them.
@Beatboxtaun:
I seriously thought the South Park guys made that up. Guess I was wrong.
