So my day job (Frengo Corp.) is like, not even a block from Capcom supreme world U.S. command in San Mateo, Calif. And equidistant to us both is the above Trader Joe's grocery, which Californians know as a go-to stop for tasty lunchtime treats for not a lot of dough. I enjoy the barbecue chicken pinwheels, even if they do pack 53 percent of my RDA of fat.
But I was in there Thursday and I noticed something.
Hmmm. Okami sushi? Okami video game? Nah ... that's just a coincidence ... right? Okami means "one who is higher." And really, if one were to burn doobage, who wouldn't eschew the Funyuns and king size Almond Joy for a yummy party tray of sushi? (And $5.99 for 14 pieces is pretty slick for the non-high too.)
So, nah, no way, Capcom did its homework and totally did not get a video game title from a grocery's in-house sushi brand.
Wait, what's this? On the label, what the hell is that, an IGN watermark over the Okami title ...?!?!?!?!?!!!!!

Oh dammit, someone's gonna get FIRED.

Comments
Hahaha, excellent.
I thought Ōkami meant wolf.
absolutely brilliant, +1 to you, that just made my day!
LMAO!
I've seen the Okami sushi before myself, and thus thought the payoff here was going to be pretty lame, but I laughed really really hard at that.
Hahaha, thanks for the laugh Owen!
@Maldron: Literally, Okami = "Big god"
Oh dear god, Call Capcom! WE NEED NEW OKAMI STICKERS ON THE FOOD!!
Okami: Sushi Sensations. Hahaha...
Oh, good ole aliteration, what would the modern world be without you?
People laughed at this? Owen, I think you're a funny guy when you're talking about Pac 'n shit, but this was a stretch to say the least.
That was quite funny. But as "Okami" sushi, one has to wonder if it tastes a bit... "gamey."
Hahahaha the watermark joke was great, have a nice weekend Owen, looking forward to more stuff like this.
@Gospel X: Yes, Owen was funny when he talked about "Pac 'n shit," and this may not have been AS funny as that, but it certainly garnered a chuckle.
Thanks, Owen! ^_^
@verrius:
Also big wolf, its a pun thing.
@Gospel X: heh, not saying I laughed out loud like the Pac 'n shit thread but you have to admit it was pretty good.
Owen... keep it up buddy!
Wow, someone was very, very bored when they wrote up this post, weren't they?
theres a sushi bar next to traders joe in san mateo?
lol i gotta pick some up now thanks owen
@Lilinka:
You don't have to be bored to notice that IGN has gotten into the Sushi market. Isn't there anything left out there that they haven't touched?
duuuuuuuuuuuuude I've totally seen that in every grocery store in the central valley XD ahaha I thought it was Capcom too X3
Premade sushi scares the living bejebus out of me...
haha Well done, Owen. I had a good laugh, though I suggest you should make your shoops much more terrible for effect.
My local Costco sells this sushi. And of course I thought the same thing when I first saw it.
I laughed. I laughed *hard*.
Next thing you know they'll be putting Frank 'Wasabi' West in every other product they make..
Win! *waits for the "zomg, ar dat real??" comments*
the blood of innocent interns must be spilt to favor the Gods for our mortal Oversights... Off with their heads
I lol'd. You're awesome Owen.
@verrius: You're both right; depends on the writing.
Well kami means either paper or higher deity. The O is just a marker used to express politeness.
that was the best weekend humor I've seen in quite some time. win.
Aaaah, I needed that.
Okami: wolf
Ookami: big God
San Mateo isn't their supreme world command whatever, it's their US branch. Almost all of their development is in Japan. I've been to their San Mateo office in the past.
And, Okami sushi is all over the place here, its kind of weird.
@DarkDragonDave:
Hahaha, incredible.
@cjlopez: Right, that's what I thought. The whole point of the game was that she was Okami Amaterasu, the Wolf incarnation of the Sun Goddess.
Haha, great find.
@cjlopez: Nicht richtig.
Ookami means wolf, but with different kanji it would be great god.
lol, well I laughed!
Hahaha
Owen's on his way to becoming my favorite editor around here, pretty funny stuff dude!
Oh, somebody's in trouble...
LOL
Owen, I love you man.
Damn Owen your just on fire
@ludwigk: Dude it's a joke get over it
Hee! Funny stuff.
I thought the same when I was in Trader Joe's last week.
Never thought twice about the brand name of the sushi before that.
Joke made my morning, sir! lol
@Maldron: @verrius:
狼 - wolf.
大神 - great god.
Both pronounced the same; the latter is the title of the game.
@cjlopez:
What Yuki said is true. Now, to set the record straight-
"Ookami", when written with a single kanji ('hand' radical with 'good') means wolf. And sorry, my japanese wordpro hates this kanji evidently as it doesn't have it, otherwise I'd include it here.
"Ookami" (大神), written with 2 kanji, would be big/great god.
"Okami(san)" (おかみさん)means landlady.
There are also other ways to write "Okami" that I'm not familiar with. As Owen mentioned, "one who is higher" could indeed be "Okami" (お上), so there are a lot of ways to go with this reading. At any rate, I hope this helped to clear up some confusion/misconceptions about the wolf/god distinction.
@Zerozaki Ishiki:
Ah! Beaten to it. That's what I get for too much fact-checking. hehe~
Anyways, I bow to you and your ability to type the kanji for wolf.
LOL, that was hilarious!
is that a joke or is that real? :D
HAHA nice! Now I know why I was always hungry when I played Okami.
Trader Joe's is the shizz! Best completely not healthy snack in that store? Pirates Booty! Get a bag, then witness how impossible it is to stop before you finish the WHOLE THING *burp*
@Maldron: 狼 means wolf, which is pronounced "Oukami"...the "O" is pronounced a "Ou" "Oh". in this one, i don't think it means "The Higher One" like it said cause it doesn't really make sense. I think this Okami is Mamasan / Landlady one, which would make more sense with sushi. This is written 女将, and is Pronounced "Okami" where the "O" is like pronounced....hmm the only explanation I can think of is "half way of Ou/Oh"
@djricekcn: btw, the Okami game is a word play. They mean "wolf", but the way they spell it means "big god" "extreme god" etc in that sense
I call fake! The image looks too fake.
御上 okami one who is higher
狼 ookami Japanese wolf
大神 ooMIkami Principal deity of Japanese shintoism, full name being 天照大神 (amaterasu oomikami - "great god who shines upon the heavens")
That's right, 大神 is normally pronounced, "oomikami". However, the mi is idiopathic, meaning that neither of the two kanji constituting the phrase can be thought to really have this reading. The 大 has the readings 'dai', 'tai', 'oo', 'ookii' 'ooki' and 'ooi' (there are certainly more in the form of nanori like ten or so) and 神 has the readings 'shin', 'jin', 'kan', 'kou', and 'kami'. So you see, a child who didn't know the name had a reading inconsistent with the readings of the individual kanji composing the compound, might pronounce it "ookami", which means "wolf".
And that is the pun of the title of the game O(o)kami.
Some were saying that it was oukami. This is incorrect. That is to say, おおかみ not おうかみ. Not all long O sounds are produced by う lengthening. And there is most certainly a difference in pronunciation between the two, if the speaker is feeling a bit diligent.
Not even a chortle. A chuckle? Completely out of the question. Find some news, Owen.
Though it is good to know that TJ's has cheap sushi in large quantities. You know, for when Nozawa isn't affordable.
Yeah, I LOL'ed. :) Too bad Okami sushi tastes like shit...ugh. It'd be too bad if that was "inspiration" for an amazing game :P
