Guitar Hero III Revisits Its Muse

musepic.jpg Muse's "Knights of Cydonia" was one of those pleasant surprises for me in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. As someone who only turns on the radio to hear people arguing about politics, games like GH III are sadly my main source for discovering new music, and the Muse song completely grabbed me right from the start, going from "I guess I'll try this one" to a "Time for rock squats!" song in the span of a few minutes. Now the British trio is getting even more time in the spotlight as Activision reveals a Muse track pack for GH III, featuring two songs from their Black Holes and Revelations album, "Exo-Politics" and "Supermassive Black Hole", along with "Stockholm Syndrome" off of Absolution. The pack will be available on May 8th for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Feel free to suggest similar music to me in the comments section, as I am an avid lover of all things musical without a lot of patience for wading through radio nonsense.

  • Not a big fan of these particular songs but its good to see that Muse is getting some attention in the rhythm game genre. Now all they need to do is release that one song they were planning on releasing for rock band.

  • Ok, don't take this the wrong way, but that picture totally makes me think that the folks in it are trying to make a photoshoot for Torchwood.

  • I'm surprised to at Muse. I never heard of them before, then I find they've been around UK for sometime.
Variety IS the spice of life...

  • Oh yeah, freakin' sweet, Muse is a great band!!

  • "As someone who only turns on the radio to hear people arguing about politics, games like GH III are sadly my main source for discovering new music"

i find this very sad. anyway, hysteria is the best track on absolution, imo.

  • GOD DAMN it why did these songs have to be in GH3 I love my RockBand but I love my MUSE more.

    SupermassiveBlackhole? You're killing me Actiivision

  • Eve 6 isn't similar - but they're a great band.

Stockholm Syndrome is great, but the other songs... meh...

    I liked Muse's older stuff.

  • Muse is awesome.

Hm, recommendations? Of a certain single type? That I can't do. I can rattle off my current listening though.

Stars of Track and Field. Course of Empire. Elbow. Rob Dougan. Oren Lavie.

Elbow I recommend for that Brit Pop/Rock sound.

  • Dammit, there goes my hope that these were going to rockband.

  • am i the only one waiting for "Bliss" and "Starlight"?

    "Assassins" would be badass too.

  • Yes! Muse is a great band. I don't know too many that can follow in their footsteps, but if you like them, you may also like The Faint or Ratatat. Also, for finding new music, give pandora.com a shot and use Muse as your source band.

...now if only Muse would release more songs on Rock Band. I guess we'll have to just wait for the UK release of the game.

  • Love Muse, good news

  • oh wow, this is the first time I'm jealous of GH3 as opposed to Rock Band. C'mon Harmonix, I know you have Hysteria to download when the game launches in Europe, but we totally need a dedicated Muse songpack.

  • Yup. I had not heard a single Muse song prior to GH3, thought they were some Breaking Benjamin or Seether type of radio friendly, shitty ass, shlock rock band. I am now a fan. One of the coolest things about GH3/RB and even GTA.

  • Resident Kotaku Muse nut is happy!

    :D

Fahey you might enjoy Oceansize or Amplifier. Have a look for them. Two awesome bands. You might like some Biffy Clyro at a push

  • Dude, why not give Pandora a spin? Or visit one of the million music blogs out there to discover some new jams?

  • This just makes me that much more upset with my wii version. Maybe one day...

    Great Band!

  • I agree with pretty much everyone here in wanting these for Rock Band instead of GH. Hopefully they don't have some sort of exclusive deal.

  • bring me the dillinger escape plan pack, NOW!

  • agreed on pandora, it's an excellent source of music, there are also several fine indie podcasts that can help expose you, beyond what's out there in the blogosphere.

also, try checking out the schedules of your local concert venues, see what new acts are coming through town, and look up those bands on myspace and youtube (or "acquiring" some of their stuff).

in this day and age, there's so much out there right at your fingertips, you just need to take the initiative.

  • Not exactly sure what you're interested in Fahey, but check out Pennywise's new album, Bad Religion, and NOFX.
    NOFX is bizarre, raw punk.
Bad Religion is, like, college-educated, highly-literate punk.
And Pennywise is named after a clown!
PS: Even though they're ridiculously famous, so I didn't mention them up there, Coheed&Cambria, and Red Hot Chili Peppers are great bands.

  • Muse are one of the best live bands, because of you comment you only check bands from music games I'm only going to suggest bands that are probably not going to show up on them:

The Flaming Lips-Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
    Violent Femmes-Violent Femmes
    Sea Wolf-Leaves In the River
    Hard-Fi -Stars of CCTV
Presidents of The United States-Presidents of the United States
People In PLanes-As Far as the Eye Can See
    Doves-The Last Broadcast
    ***Raconteurs-Consoler of The Lonely***

    Heavily recommend checking the Raconteurs.

  • @SPni: Glasvegas are good too. Not much more I can think of off the top of my head.

  • you should try either the klaxons or raconteurs

  • I've loved Muse since I heard "Time is Running Out" back in 2003. My girlfriend at the time had tried to get me into them, but I didn't listen to her until I heard that song. Been a fan ever since.

Seeing them live is my second favorite concert I've ever been to, it was damn amazing.

A lot of people compare "The Bends" and "OK Computer" by Radiohead to Muse, though I don't think they sound so similar. They're great albums nonetheless, worthy of a listen.

  • @Eville1: Well done. I love Elbow.

  • @Palladium: we all float down here.

i've lost my taste for muse, but i still love stockholm syndrome. what an insane song to play! and you gotta love the video for knights of cydonia...

  • Also, I'm going to second a recommendation of the Doves. They're amazing. Lost Souls is my favorite album by them, and they have a kind of...similar way about them to Muse, though their sound isn't totally cloned, they're still unique.

  • Fahey, sign up for www.last.fm. It's a service that tracks your artists and songs and recommends similar stuff, among other things.

I'm using it for years now, if anybody of you guys uses it, feel free to add me: www.last.fm/user/rospaya2

  • Needs moar Orgin of Symmetry stuff imo

But this has made my day~ now to wait a week for it.

  • you might like Biffy Clyro at a push. Try anything off "Puzzle" - thats their first real push from awesome Indie band to 'big' sounding band...

  • I am in the exact same boat as the writer. I too learn about "new" music only from Guitar Hero, and Knights of Cydonia was easily my favorite song from GH3.

  • I walways think of Radiohead when I hear muse.

Ok computer is an awesome album. Creep is my favourite song by them, not on ok computer though.

  • Fahey: If you want more Muse, I have 4 words: "Map of the Problematique." It's another song off of Black Holes and Revalations.
Also, I rather enjoy Gorillaz, even though they aren't that similar.

  • Oh man, this is the first song pack I'd actually buy, all 3 are awesome songs, too bad I don't have the PS3 or 360 version of the game.

  • @elronathon: Puzzle was Biffy going from awesome to crap in about 60mins. It's a crappy americanised version of Biffy. The first three albums before it were much, much better.

  • Damn I really want Stockholm Syndrome, the others I don't really care for. Where's Hysteria?

  • Muse might be my favorite band discovery this decade. Oceansize (someone above mentioned 'em) is virtually tied for that spot, though. Fairly similar sound, but less mainstream, more proggy (but don't worry, they're not prog wanksters like dream theater).

Anyways, as much as I love Muse, and am happy they'll be getting more exposure, I'm gonna have to say NOOOOOoooOoOoOOOoooOOo!!! These songs need to come out on Rock Band! I just have a feeling that any time something comes out for GHIII, Activision tries to pull some kind of exclusivity deal for the songs or the bands. Of course I'm sure MTV/EA/Harmonix tries to do the same thing, but their game is way more fun, so I don't mind as much...

  • Where's Plug-in baby!?! I'm calling it now for GH4.

  • More Muse!?>?! *fist pump*

I'll 3rd Doves. Great, chill sound.

For a band with similar Muse energy, but with a different (read: southern) sound, give Kings of Leon a listen. Those guys were raised on Jack Daniel's. Very catchy.

  • @Nissan288: Starlight and Assassin are the two I was thinking of. But think of how hard Assassin would be to play.

  • @carvelo:
I LOVE Ratatat and all, but I'm sorry I don't see any real parallels between them and muse.

Pitchfork isn't bad for hearing about new indie music if you are interested, just ignore the actual reviews/ratings because most of their reviewers are sanctimonious hipster pricks

  • Muse is the greatest rock band ever. fact.

  • oh, and butterflies and hurricanes would be sweet to play. its their most amazing song. anyone who hasn't given them a listen needs to.

  • It's weird to hear American people talk about Muse as if they are an undiscovered gem. They are one of the biggest bands in the UK.

Their most famous songs are probably,

    Plug In Baby
    Hysteria
    Time Is Running Out

  • I love Muse. I wish I had GH3 on a PS3 (I only have a PS2 and GH2). Stockholm syndrome will be insane.

    Also
    @4Degrees:

Creep is no where near as good as any of there other stuff. Creep to me is the highlight of Pablo Honey. Also, apart from the falsetto voices they aren't that similar.

  • @JenovasWitness: It's on Rock Band disc in the EU release and as DLC for the ones over the pond.

  • needs more map of the problematic and or starlight and or invincible =)

  • Would have rather they chosen Time is Running Out and there Feeling Good Cover.

But great songs non the less.

  • Maybe this will cause EA to put some Muse tracks on Rock Band. I'd love to play Map of the Problematique or Stockholm Syndrome on the drums.

  • Considering they wouldn't have chosen old songs, those 3 aren't a bad selection of the recent albums. Now I really wish I'd have a PS3 to be able to play download this package instead of being stuck with the wii version !

Muse really haven't been shown a lot of love from America. Here in Canada, we don't hear them often on TV or radio. They are unknown to a lot of my friends, even if they're listening to a lot of music. Time is running out and supermassive black hole were played but that's it. I don't know about USA but they doesn't seem to have been played at all ! I wish they would so we could get some tour dates more often !

@BitterAndThenSome: I've seen Dillinger Escape Plan in show, before AFI and it's clearly one of my worst musical experience ever. I know that tastes aren't questionnable but I hope you don't really like them.

  • You have to admit, despite what your opinion of the direction they're taking GH in, they've done a far better job on producing a regular flow of DLC for GHIII comparred to what we saw for GHII.

  • Rockband plz.

  • Roommate loves Muse, so I've heard a little of 'em even though they aren't my style. Wish they'd add "Starlight"--I like that one a lot.

  • Damn they got to get plug in baby, seriously they do that and erm i might actualy go out and buy guitar hero.

  • - Dinosaur Jr.
    - Thrice
    - Emery
    - City & Colour
    - Coheed and Cambria
    - Saosin
    - The Classic Crime
    - Culture Club

That's stuff on the lighter end of my spectrum that you'd probably enjoy.

  • Damn it, Muse needs to be on Rock Band, not GH3! Assassin, Thoughts of a Dying Atheist, and Plug In Baby would make a great pack. But they have way too many to just pick 3. I would so buy an album's worth of tracks, though they would have to be picked from multiple albums since they have a bunch of songs that just wouldn't translate.

  • All I want is the entire Muse-Absolution Album on Rock band. The singing part on Apocalypse Please would rule.

  • Image of NeoAkira NeoAkira at 09:32 AM on 05/02/08 *

oh God, WHY did I buy GH3 for the Wii damnit, WHY?!

Well I guess I'll just keep my fingers crossed for more Muse tracks in GH 4

  • <3

hysteria would be awesome too :P

and on rock band would be better ^_^

  • What the fuck. I was hoping Harmonix could scoop up Stockholm Syndrome before Neversoft...

  • recomendation:
    the national.. boxer and/or alligator
not like muse at all.. but amazing none the less.

  • @Americo: Agreed. Entirely.

This might be enough to make me go pick up a version of GH III when I finally get a 360... (I have the GH II 360 guitar already from working on the game, so I'll just need the software)

  • Try buying Muse's full discography, it's the only way you'll come even close to anything that sounds like Muse :).

Oh, and I saw Hard-Fi up there, try them too, you may like those guys.

  • If the full album of Black Holes and Revelations were to be released in Rock Band I'd buy it in a heartbeat. City of Delusion is my favourite song off the album.

As for recommended bands, I listen to Queens of the Stone Age and Mars Volta. Mars is a bit of an acquired taste, some of their songs run 13 minutes and their band has 10 or so members. I could also recommend Tool, but they and Muse sound nothing alike.
