Last night was pretty rough. Kid woke up suddenly and starting barfing all over the futon — which I had the pleasure of cleaning. Beef stew. Yay! He didn't go to school today, but stayed home and watched Kiki's Delivery Service over and over again. Seems okay, now. I probably won't be eating beef stew until sometime during the next World Cup.
OH. So, today I started using two separate laptops while working. It actually seemed to increase my productivity. I can totally understand why Elvis would watch four (was it four?) TVs at once. Felt like I was getting more down switching between them. Now whether I actually was... Don't you switch between two computers while working?

KVM switch?
I don't need two computers since I have 2 monitors.
Aw. Sorry for your rough night. That's the one part of parenting that I just wouldn't be able to handle.
Don't try to burn the candle at both ends for too long. It's not good for your health either.
I've got a desktop and a laptop. Desktop's for games and the laptop is for school. I only have both on at home when transferring files.
I don't know if it makes you more productive but it sure does make you look more important.
"Oh geeze, I've got so much awesome gaming news to write that one laptop simply can't handle it all!"
In MMOPRGs namely FFXI I will power level myself using my laptop next to my desktop. It adds a whole new challenge to gaming.
When I use two computers I constantly grab the wrong mouse. I look at the screen trying to figure out why the cursor isn't moving. Dual monitors on one computer works better for me.
Oh yeah, and I still can't stand the smell of Cheerios after one late night with my son.
These "what you missed" posts are becoming famous.

I have problems using two hands at once, imagine two PCs...
Virtual desktops.
I use 4 and theyre usually all filled on my linux machine.
I dual screen myself. My main work monitor is also taken to trade shows, so I keep my backup monitor attached to my work machine. Since I'm the type to have 12 billion windows open at once, I use a virtual desktop manager as well and group my desktops on certain jobs. (Desktop Manager 0.5.3 on OS X 10.4.)
It LOOKS pretty chaotic, but I think I've got a system down that works for me.
Nice things about having a "trade show" monitor: I get to have a 24" monitor about 50 weeks of the year.
Bad things about having a trade show monitor: The weeks I'm on just the 19" backup are kind of painful. :-P
I use 2 monitors, just one tower though. Maybe I'll upgrade to 2 at some point.
Oh, the joys of parenthood! I KNEW you were hard at work! lol. More pc's = more productivity, try three! ;)
I keep saying to my boss dual screen would increase my productivity but he said no dice.
It would make me look like a mad scientist, though.
Dual screen at work (laptop + 22" display) and then at home 2 comps and a KVM switch. Works great for doing multiple things.
In undergrad, my roommates and I had two tv's in the room (Office and Smallville side-by-side). When we'd go home and only have one, we got so damn bored watching it.
I know what you mean when you say "Kid woke up suddenly and starting barfing" My daughter totally does that... I think most kids do. No warning... just wake up and spew with literally a fraction of a second between the two actions.
I feel for ya... I've been there before. Also, it's a little known fact that kids will ONLY barf in the middle of the night. It's true. Ask any parent.
Hope MiniBash feels better soon. ^_^
I only have one machine and one monitor :/
I guess I'm not important enough. Would be nice to be able to farm on City of Heroes while doing actual work...hmmm...
When I'm home I'll go back and forth between my desktop and my laptop. It does feel like I'm getting more done :)
My one year old can puke twice her body weight and then resume her destruction of the living room like nothing happened. It's a skill that we lose later on in life.
@DaFron: I have to work with Windows as well as Mac, so I just remote desktop in to my Windows box. Only 1 mouse and keyboard to grab, I just have to remember that the Alt button is 1 over from where I think it is on my Mac keyboard.
I never work
I make people work muajajajaja
Does your boy speak English or Japanese?
I have my desktop in one area and then I can swing around to where the LCD/PS3/360 setup is.I would like to have a laptop to do other things.Like maybe a unique setup to produce podcasts/ or for my blog.
dual screen = yes it's faster
dual machine = slower overall
@cordsie:
You can regain that skill with a mixture of vodka and Red Bull.
@El Patricko:
It's ironic that they (the people commenting on Digg) think that we're jerks for banning someone for making fun of the Day/Night notes. They themselves are voting off comments that make fun of them for Digging the ban of that guy.
Anyhoo, the last time I barfed in bed in the middle of the night involved fried chicken and the back of my brothers head.
Two computer setup is handy. I have PC that I use for all the heavy lifting, and Mac that runs music, email, calendar, chats, etc. Less windows on top of eachother, and no goddamn instant messengers popping up to interrupt my work. You just have to find what to run on each machine, and big enough table for the input devices, especially when if have wacom, mouse, trackball, two keyboards, 3d connexion navigator, gamepads, etc...
Welcome to my world Bash. Be careful though... it can make you look like a freak. While at home I'm always on both my desktop and my laptop, attention split between both evenly.
When I'm in my cave (my room) plotting the end of the world (on both computers at once) no one will even try to talk to me. They say it's like I'm in a trance... Every attempt at contact is met with a very insincere smile and nod.
@Schoolimangooli:
He speaks a very cute variation of JapEnglish. Not to be confused with Engrish
You know, i hear Adrian Veidt LOVES using multiple televisions at once.
I wonder what he's up to lately, anyways.
@Pezdispenser: Agreed. Easy solution - if you don't like the day/night note posts.... don't fucking read them. Pretty simple.
I think my last time involved a bag of shrooms, fourteen heinekins and a half eaten squirrel that was acquired at some point during that fateful evening.
I feel your kids pain, Bash. I've had the flu the past couple of days. It's not too fun this year.
Mt kids watch Kiki's Delivery Service back to back as well. We're in the UK, so this makes 'em a bit 'leftfield', as none of their friends have a clue what they're talking about :-)
Still, I'm glad that they like it. It's got a quite charm and calmness that I wouldn't have thought would appeal to them (they are 3 and 5), but it clearly does. I'm holding Spirited Away until they are a bit older...
I do alot of animation work, and dual computers are such a blessing for that type of stuff.That way I can work work on one scene on my main box while the other box is rendering. It's a tremendous time saver for me.
Studies show that more than one monitor, or a larger monitor at that, increases productivity. That's why I invested in a 22" monitor on top of my older 19" CRT (1600x1200 can't be questioned).
I used to use a laptop as well as my desktop when I had a large desk that wasn't cluttered. Though generally it's too much to deal with normally (switch from one computer back to the other back to the other back to the other...)
Maybe your computer's are just nicely suited for slow. If they're slow enough, you can do something on one and switch to the other until the first one finishes loading, and keep doing that. But that's unnecessary nowadays. Time to get away from that Mac, I saw.
I loved Kiki's Delivery Service. Our Minpin is actually named oddly after the cat Ji-Ji in 魔女の宅急便.
My old company had everyone on Dual monitors and it forced me to do the same at home. I can't be productive without 2 monitors.
Aw, hope you have a better day today! :)
(and beef stew is ftw)
I have dual monitors, not the same without them anymore.
Why is it always beef stew? I swear, I know three people who have gotten sick off of beef stew in the last few years...
I work on three computers at work at once, up to 5 depending on what needs to be done.
I actually turn to Studio Ghibli when I am sick, too. I always have to watch Spirited Away...
There's nothing quite like being woken up by a child that is doing a Linda Blair imitation. The worst part is that they usually want to sleep with you afterwards...
Kiki's Delivery Service and My Neighbour Totoro are both on the kids 'watch over and over again until we're quoting random sentences from the movies'list.
@TalKeaton: Game Design Major:
A little less than a year ago there was a massive Beef Stew recall, something about containing botulism. They wouldn't have been eating Austex Beef Stew, would they?
@El Patricko: It's ironic that Digg has this story under the category Gaming >> Industry News. Some guy doesn't like Kotaku, so it's industry news? Seems just like that guy on his Times blog that was mentioned recently. If you don't like Kotaku go to other websites. Of course, with attention whores it can't be that simple. They have to cause drama before they move on.
Also, the Digg sumbitter's name is Rogan. The Kotaku name of the banned account is Rogz. Gee, I wonder if there's some kind of connection.
As long as one of them is a Macbook running Windows and the other is a hackintosh running OSX, then I can definitely see how it would increase productivity...
You dont know awesome until you run 4 PC's without a KVM switch because you need your buff bots for RvR in DAoC.
Argh, hit sumbit too soon. I was also going to mention this program. It's called Vine Server, and it's basically just a VNC server. You can remotely view and control the second laptop, so that could potentially be useful to ou.
I only have the one laptop, but I usually have a remote desktop open to the home server, and VM running as well. So it's sort of like 3 computers.
@El Patricko:
Apparently!
And the guy that apparently submitted that so desperately wanted to swing the Ban Hammer at other commenters. The irony...
I want to stay home from school and watch "kiki's delivery service" all day >.>.... wait... I'm home schooled :D wouldn't want to throw up beef stew though :X The multi tv thing reminds me of the sims XD (it was an item at least in the sims bustin out for gamecube X3... scary how I know this)
I have 4 computers running on 3 screens. On my desk from left to right is: Laptop (light tasks), 22" LG widescreen LCD, 22" Acer widescreen LCD. The 2 LCD's are connected to all 3 of my computers via KVM switches (one of them daisy-chained which works suprisingly well). Although it's a wiring nightmare, it really allows me to work productively on multiple screens depending on what I need to do. I can have email/scheduling/billing open on the laptop, with data management apps on another screen, and remote connections to clients on the 3rd. It works very well for multi-tasking.
Of course when it's slow, I can use my heavy duty work/gaming rig for games or movies or TV with the HTPC and I have my PS3 attached to the other - the advantages of working at home (besides being able to work in your pajamas).
I have two PCs at work: My workstation (well, not mine, its the company's) and my laptop (this ones really mine) for music and extra projects, and even the odd multimedia (image, video, sound, stuff for websites, etc) production requeriment.
Ony thing im proud off of, its that besides Windows Vista (blergh) wich came bundled with the laptop, everything else in it is OPEN SOURCE! Hurray for open source!
..what do you mean, my ROM(Z) directory isn't open source!?
I use 3 computers here at work, a mac, pc and linux machine. I found that synergry works great for a multiple computer setup. You can control all machines with 1 keyboard and mouse(no need for a kvm switch) you can also copy and paste text from one machine to another.
