Look, I'm not normally one to get all hot and bothered by the stuff people that don't play games say about game. But this rant, by CNN's Glenn Beck? As a gamer I'm stumped. But as a gamer and a history grad, I'm...less than amused. It's like a one-two punch with ignorance-coated knuckle-dusters.

Who knew that Pong would make so many efficient killers in Vietnam?
hes actually 100% correct on all of his points, why else do you think noone had been shot before world war 1?
GRAND THEFT AUTO! grand theft auto lol
what parents need to know!
THERE'S A CHAINSAW?!
Shweet.
Holy shit, there's a chainsaw in GTA IV? Where?!
Glen Beck is a f'ing douchebag. At one point he actually made sense but now he's just going off on everything.
That game looks awesome! I want to buy it!
@Engel: haha i think this is the best comment.
Hey! There's a chainsaw in the game? I gotta have it :O
Glenn Beck is a tremendous idiot and it only takes about 10 minutes of hearing him speak to make this blindingly obvious. I don't even have to watch the clip, I've heard/read enough fantastically stupid shit from him to make it unnecessary. Off the top of my head, saying that consumers should thank Big Oil and blaming the fires in San Diego last October on Californians not supporting the president were particularly mind-blowing. Especially when you consider that San Diego is one of the most conservative parts of the states due to its strong military heritage.

Guys. It's true. Whenever I'm driving around in a car these days I'm always on the lookout for items, boost pads and potential ramps.
If anything, Mario Kart Wii has trained me to drive with way more style.
Wow. People seriously need to stop making snap judgements. Whatever happened to the old cliche "don't judge a book by its cover?" If any of these hatemongers would take the time out to actually play most of the games they bash, they would see that there is so much more to them than just mindless violence.
And seriously, teaching people to kill? I have been playing games all my life and I would still never kill anyone or anything. Except mosquitos. And spiders.
Oh man.
The whole "you can hire a prostitute, have sex with her, beat her to death with a BASEBALL BAT, and then, when a police officer comes, you can either light him on fire or cut him in half with a chainsaw . . . car-jack the ride of your choice" . . . . . . .
Uhh. You can do all these things in real-life, too!
Also, this guy's uhh, logic is really lacking. I hate the world a tiny bit at a time as I watch things like this :-/
I haven't seen any chainsaw yet and I'm near the end! Anyone else found one?
This seems like a typically clueless rant, which deliberately ignores the fact that the game is not a kids game and that videogames are not just for kids- they're entertainment for anybody.
In the UK GTAIV has an 18 rating, presumably in the US it has an equivalent rating, so how does he imagine kids will be playing this? He should be telling ignorant parents about the ESRB rating system used by videogames instead of trying to draw a link between games and violence.
That was an interesting tidbit about the exponential violence growth proportional to various entertainment mediums.
Does this guy realize his show will not exist without such "pop culture"?
Once again, it is highly blown out of proportional, but I have to agree that GTAIV is realistic enough that anyone on the bender, this game can tip it.
Now to a conditioned gamer, we could and usually do say "We are mature enough, distinguish reality and entertainment, pasttime, job+family+gaming, yada yada yada..
Yet, if an individual is depraved enough with minimal external influences, GTAIV can induce a behavior not likely seen from playing Adventure Island.
There is a reason it's Mature and I hope that everyone who plays it can put a clear distinction; because the game is everything I had hoped for since the original Liberty City; its real.
I guess we can blame the lower mortality rates on the battlefield on video games too. I mean, come on it gives you better reflexes, develops critical thinking and it is also a way to TRAIN squad based tactics in an effective manner. Oh yeah lets not forget the dude who saved another man's life because he played a medic in the U.S. Army game and from the bloody training manuals in the game, managed to save a life.
I completely agree with this guy. We should get rid of all pop culture. Music, movies, TV, games and even fast food! They're the root of all evil!!!
I really don't know where to start with this so maybe I should just carry on - content in the knowledge that my parents allowed me to grow up playing videogames and I will do the same. My family - unshattered, my criminal record - non-existant, my view on actual violence against another human - abhorrent.
"Killing each other is not a natural human instinct."
...I'm sure Cain & Abel would have something to say about that, eh, Religious Right?
Yes, we get it, GTA is bad for kids. And I sympathize with that. GTA is definitely not a game for kids.
But, the military connection? The not-so-subtle bashing of *adults* who play the game?
Give me a break.
Of course it's in human nature to kill, Yes there is morality issues.
"THE POINT."
Ok... I learned Miley Cyrus Crashed Vanity Fair's website with its influx of pedos and virgins...
But yeah. GTA, not only GTA but Pop Culture! made us conditioned to kill.
"God Bless you if you don't." Uh.. Can't help that I'm informed. or is "pop culture" evil if its information.
I'm all for facts and history (I'd call myself a history buff) but, I doubt hindering society but opening our eyes to what's really out there. The option to beat a hooker to death is already out there and although its not as publicized as people might think cops and hookers die everyday (not like they're in the same category). It's whether its publicised or not, most likely not. Time to go buy a chainsaw that I have yet to see just so I can re-enact what I heard on CNN and have somebody blame it on "conservative culture".
While the thing is that the person on the video gets it a little mixed up, at least he states facts... unlinke FauxNews.
You can actually do the things he describe, but you don't have to.
And the whole "trains our sons for the military" stuff... ahem, please pick a fight with FPS not GTA. Thanks!
This man has uncovered the ugly truth. Video games evolved not from Pong on an oscilloscope, but from the Pentagon's secret human-target training that began in World War I. They train us to kill people, because humans aren't predisposed toward violence. We will never need a draft, so long as video games exist.
My question: If the games evolved from an innovation in the first world war, why is it World War II that gets all the love?
A game intended for those 17+ sounds perfect for training soldiers to pull the trigger, or beat enemies with a baseball bat, have their way with them in the backseat, then tank-jack a tank.
I want what he's having. It obviously makes him blind, deaf and dumb to common sense and rationality and dammit, ignorance is bliss.
Sadly enough, I have yet to hire a prostitute and then kill her for my money, chainsaw a cop, or steal a ride. In real life or GTA IV. I actually felt bad when I accidently took Michelle to a bar instead of a restaurant and had to drive her home drunk. And the one random person I did try to beat up I actually ended up just leaving alone after they started fighting back. The big point that most people miss with this game is choice. Yes you can kill anyone any which way you can think of (like knocking a street light on top of them) but you can also choose NOT TO. Besides the people you have to kill in the missions you can go the entire game without killing anyone else. But of course most people, including us playing the game, do not realize that.
As an aside, I've always found the word "stupident" to be the pinnacle of irony.
what a cock, does he beleive what he's saying?
this would be hilarious if a) he didn't actually mean it or b) there weren't people out there that would hang on his every word. what a horridly misinformed man.
'your son... or husband or boyfriend or whoever' only guys play videogames too, remember that.
Bullshit from the start of that video. I don't know about you lot but my high school was full of making out and having sex.
That millitary connection is a pile of shit. I'd love to know where he gets his 'facts' from. Oh and GTA4 has an M or 18 rating for a reason. Video Games aren't just for children. Infact the majority of gamers are over 18.
I hate reactionary, unfounded bullshit. It doesn't make you look smart. Just a bit of a dumbass.
Won't somebody please think of the children!?
does glenn beck have a book? because this could be mass effect all over again, for better or for worse
yes, double increase in violence when the television was introduced because when the television was introduced it didn't have 2 channels and it had endless crime filled action shows, not goofy cartoons or news.
yes, it is entertaining to me. very entertaining to run people over and saw people in half with chainsaws. i saw your half smile when you said that!
funny thing, non-violent people wouldn't play this game, so who's becoming violent, the violent people?
Kids in high school are making out and having sex? Seriously? I would have never known if good old Glenn Beck had not enlightened me. Tune in next week for another Glenn Beck exclusive: Kids in college drink beer!!!
I hit stop as soon as he said "It's training our kids to be killers"
Fucking conservative douchebag
Paper figures where you actually have a gun making first time firing easier? Who would have thought. Yes practicing on human looking targets might help in real life war situations. But if you gave an average person a videogame (not a gun simulator) and then told them to go kill someone they would have just as much trouble as the army guy. Context. A person in the army is expected to kill someone else. A 15 year old buying GTA is not anticipating playing the game so he won't feel uneasy the next day he goes out with his gun to kill some annoying neighbors.
I will never agree that games raise your threshold for violence until the day when graphics are ultra real and the AI begs for their life all while acting like a real human being. We are maybe 30% there. And when we do get their i'm sure we will either see devs take a step back in graphics or story will have developed so far by then that we may see deep emotional reasons for every action.
And honestly I think I speak for everyone if we were to find out 100% that games do cause violence in the worst ways then I don't want to live in this world. Fuck it then. I'll honestly watch "bad" TV shows, Movies, Videogames while the rest of the world goes to hell.
Hahaha, time out, I just caught this one:
"...projected to sell 9 million copies just by the end of the year, that is $450 million in sales..."
I guess nobody told Glenn Beck that games cost $60 nowadays, not $50. That, or Glenn is pretty shitty at math.
Well, that's Glenn Beck being Glenn Beck pretty much. I'll stop right here, before I get into long rant about the moron.
What an idiot. I just don't get it. 99% of people who play these games aren't gonna go beating up some whore on the street because of this game.
And the one or two news stories you eventually hear about kids doing something bad and blaming it on GTA or games in general, happens like seriously once or twice a year. And they were probably already screwed up to begin with. How many people play this? MILLIONS.
STOP BLAMING VIDEOGAMES, IGNORANT ASS.
Oh, and Mr. Beck, you say the introduction of television in the 1950s caused a doubling of the homicide rate in America? What the hell was on television when it debuted? CERTAINLY not ANYTHING even remotely violent. That was all seriously frowned upon, nothing like that aired back then because America wasn't as accepting as we are now. I doubt anything on TV back then caused people to commit murder.
If only more people like Glenn Beck existed in the world. What a wonderful place that would be sitting by the fire whittling wood or some other fun activity. Just good old wholesome fun.
*sigh* If only.
First thing this morning.... watching that gave me the taste of sick in my mouth.
There just aren't the words for people like this.
Obviously GTA is a murder simulator. Why else do you think third world countries like Sudan and Somalia are full of murder and rape.
They are all obviously being trained in the ways of GTA and TV violence in general.
Glenn Beck has got it all figured out guys! What a genius.
again..there is a rating system.
kids aren't supposed to play it. xD
you know they will.
but..err..hrmm..
i want to see sir douche playing the game.
i bet he'll enjoy himself lol
also..those 50s tv shows obviously rased the homicide rate.
W...T....F?
xDDD makes NO SENSE AT ALL!
raised*
oops
Did TV always stereotype so much, in this case all games are GTA?
His argument implies that people are mindless drones that are easily swayed. Which is why his argument can can be bad and people will still listen.
Whatever happened to the realization that we have free will? Even in GTA there's a choice to do things.
I never really played GTA until 4. Heck I Didn't really care for the series until now because of the violence. I bought this one because I wanted to see the Euphoria engine in motion. I really didn't expect to care for it much
However, after spending years with my head stuck in literary anthologies I realize something now that I didn't before. GTA 4 is satire along the lines of "A Modest Proposal".
What people fail to realize is that you CAN kill a hooker and you CAN throw molatov cocktails at police. I for one have not killed any hookers because its hard enough in their line of work.
