Yes, yes. Japan wants a Final Fantasy VII remake. Maybe you want a remake, too. This we know! But is it possible? Well, of course, it's possible. But what are the chances of it actually happening any time soon? Square Enix's Yoshinori Kitase, director of the original FFVII, says:
My feelings are that if a remake were to work well then all the core members of the original team must be reassembled, all the artists and designers. The problem is that, although all of us have an idea of what a remake should be and how to do it, organising such a thing right now is logistically very difficult. All the different members are now involved in very new, very large projects like Final Fantasy XIII and those projects are going to take a while.
Maybe, when all those games are finished then we can look at doing something like that.
Of course, that said we came up with the idea for Crisis Core in just two days. It was a case of 'this is what we want to do, so let's do it'. So, you can definitely expect the probability of something spontaneous happening at some point, but it's hard to predict.
With the remake-happy way Square Enix is going these days, you can bet there's eventually going to be a FFVII. Reassuring to know that Kitase wants to do it in-house with the original team.

"you can definitely expect the probability of something spontaneous happening at some point, but it's hard to predict."
I love that this sentence makes me excited, despite being more vague than the Conclusion section of the reports I write for university.
At least he's a purist. Good sign.
NO NO NO NO NO SUPER DOUBLE NO!!!
Remake something of more value PLEASE! Notably, something with a better battle system! FFVII had one of the worst, most exploitable, horribly vanilla battle system of almost any Square game pre-Enix.
A remake would be awesome, but I'd be happy with a port as well, like FF3 and 4 on the DS...
In the meantime, I would be happy if they released the original on PSN as a download.
Somehow, I imagine me growing old and decrepit...then, all of a sudden, I'll hear, "Grandma, why's everybody talking about Final Fantasy VII". I'll just grumble, "It was nicknamed Duke Nukem Forever."
ps3 is bought if that's coming true. well it's bought anyway when ff 13 is coming out.
Think about how long it would take until this actually came out though...
i would give my right arm for them to remake this on the ps3. as long as it look like that awesome tech demo from a few years back. Final Fantasy VII FTW!!!
We will never see a remake.
Am I the only one that could do without a remake? Sure it would sell faster then cocaine in the 80s but still. By the time we see this our Grandchildren will be playing the remake. Or at least our kids. Problem is... I would still buy it. /sigh
If I were a betting man, I would bet that a Final Fantasy VII remake is the next thing the do after XIII.
Good to see that Kitase has at least a little concern regarding the quality of a potential remake. Christmas 2014, c'mon baby!

I'd definately buy a FFVII for the DS. Bring that out!
Man i would love a remake.........secondly they started it, thats what they get for showing off what FF7 could look like on the PS3 serves them right LOL
XIII ,whats after that?FF XIV,which is the double of FF VI (7x2=14)so guess what's coming.
Of course I want a remake: Get it on!
Come on Square Enix, we all know you should have done this earlier. And Chrono Trigger. Snap snap! Make it happen already!
Well I suppose its inevitable really, and I suppose id have to buy it, even though Im still happy with the original tbh!
I'll probably get flamed, but I never really understood the appeal of FFVII...that is, it's an OK game, but I don't understand why everyone treats it as if it were the pinnacle of gaming. It's certainly not flawless, and much of the game is pretty stereotypical fare.
Of course, I also can't understand remaking any game people already consider high quality. Are better graphics really all that important?
Maybe I'm just a sucker for my old sweetheart, FFVII, but at least in my opinion, if they simply released it again with no improvements other than next-gen graphics, I'd be all over that in a heartbeat. BUT, that said, here's what I think would make it even better:
- Newer, shinier graphics
- More cutscenes
- Maybe some new secret hidden summons
- More secret bosses (new Weapons?)
- Orchestra music (bye-bye MIDI)
- A NewGame+ type feature where you can play again, except HARDER
That's my wishlist and I'm stickin' to it.
FFVIII was SO much better. I don't get all the love for VII.
@Balius: Don't get me wrong, FFVII holds a very special part in my heart. But honestly, you're right. What it really boils down to is circumstance. FFVII was just at the right place and the right time. Much like Jimi Hendrix.
Bring it on!
shinier graphics please hehe
but Battle system definitely needs updating , Materia Comboing ruined the game to hell
As long as the remake the battle system (there's no excuse for keeping random encounters), I'm all for it.
As a side note, that picture reminds me why I love the European Final Fantasy box arts so much. Our's looks like this.
<---------
Thankfully they've managed to keep up the tradition of just showing the logo right up to FFXII.

@SoamX: Whereas I don't get why anyone could seriously like FFVIII that much. Just really didn't click with me, and the fact that at least in Europe (dunno about NTSC) the discs were very dodgy and wiped memory cards. Everyone I knew who bought the game on release had to restart at least once because their save was corrupted. Really pissed me off with the whole game, which is a shame.
@Therin: yeah random encounters is so 1990's
@Kazzahdrane: liked FFVIII but the magic system sucked balls , by the time i started placing too many Ultima's to boost characters to god like proportions i was turned off (if ur wondering where u can abuse getting them ,,, pocketstation chocobo abuse lol)
They remade everything else already, so why not?
Maybe the fans will finally realize that FF VII isn't that big a deal compared to the rest of the series, but who am I kidding?
If I were Sony OR Microsoft, I would throw down $100 Million for exclusive rights right now. That game would sell SO MANY systems.
@黒天使: Indeed, too easy to level your guys to 100 as well. Pocketstation never released in Europe :( So all I got was reading that bit of the manual and wishing I could play it!
I think a remake is due for this! It's a great game, telling an intriguing story, and it's ripe for a newer generation of players, seeing as it's been 11 years since the release of the original.
A remake on the PS3, with those graphics from the tech demo a couple years back would be amazing, but I see it more realistically being ported...to the DS!
I think the recent 3D FF games on the DS are a testbed for something like this. DQ9 is coming soon, but the style is different. FF7 could make the transition.
@H8ff0000: Or Nintendo. Let's face it, a lot of the "Wiilol" fanboys would be straight up at the counter to buy a Wii if they could get a FFVII remake on it, even with sub-HD graphics. SE are pretty graphics-happy though so doubt they'd go for it.
FF13 is like a freaky 10 year project game, by that time no one would want an outdated game like FF7 to be remade.
As long as they don't treat it as something like "Meh, let's do it in our spare time".
If FFVII has to have a remake, may it be awesome. Because I'm pretty shure it would sell even more than new FF games...
They have been teasing us for years re-releasing all the old Final Fantasy games, they know what will sell the most, it's FFVII!
I don't even care if it looks exactly the same. Whack a direct (working, of course) port on the PSP and you'd see PSP sales rocket. If I didn't already have a PSP I wouldn't hesitate to buy one just for FVII. Hell, FFVII is the only reason I bought the PS1!
@jpxdude: I agree with you, although I'd prefer a HD remake on PS3/360. I love my DS to bits, but sometimes you really need to go "WOAH" at graphics. FFVII did that for me with its FMVs on the PSX, would love it to do it again over 10 years later!
@SoamX: VIII? That soap opera? VI was much much better than VII, let alone VIII
@TheGamesta: Totally agree! It's almost impossible to carry over the feel and the magic of the original game.
@Black-Dog-Howls:
Well that would a good time to add a little more flavor to the battle system, don't you think? Besides, the battle system was made to be exploitable, it's just the game itself that was too easy.
That being said, I can't wait for its remake. No matter how it turns out, I'll buy it, front row, big sword in hand and spiked-hair wig on head.
ff7 on the DS would be fail, it'd look worse or just the same as the ps1 counterpart.
I'm happy enough being able to play it on my PSP whenever I want, wherever I want.
heres hoping it's not a PS3 exclusive...
*Sigh* It's starting to become redundant, but I'm still going to type it: Why do people want or need a remake so bad? Final Fantasy VII was an excellent JRPG, which is now timeless enough to still be played and enjoyed today even by younger audiences who've never even been old enough to play FFVII back in 1997. The game's popularity is already beyond question, yet people still aren't satisfied? I'm sorry, but I'll take some new titles over something I've played ten years ago with prettier graphics. The World Ends With you is a beginning sign of Square-Enix trying to be the creative Squaresoft of old again; lets not take another step backwards.
@kipperminge: you would give away your good arm?
damm i´m a ffvii fanboy but i wouldn´t give my arm to them =)
maybe my soul, but no limb severing =)
@kipperminge: What would they do with your arm though?
I don't see why they need the original team to be honest. They already laid the groundwork, all the tools are there. All they have to do is update it. Its not like you're going to take the story off in some bold new direction or completely revamp the battle system or anything.
@黒天使: never had a chance to get a pcketstation =(
played only in an pc emulator =P
Final Fantasy VI is the ONLY game they should remake on ps3, end of story.FF VII was the worst thing to happen to the Final Fantasy franchise.
NOT HAPPENING TILL PS5.
I think once they have gameplay, they'll be good. Remember; cutscenes in FFVII were special, not the game.
@KeroseneClimax: I'd like a remake because I quite dislike FFVII as it is at the moment. I'd love to see it remade - retranslated /written so the dialogue is a little less inane, graphics that provide a little more definition to the world...
There are a /lot/ of fans, obviously - and I'd love to be one of them. To me, the game has a lot of potential, but I can't overlook its weaknesses long enough to play the thing through.
So yeah, despite not being a fan at the moment I'd love to see a remake, so I can give it a try again. :)
i hope not but it may turn out to be the thing where you wish you just kept it nostailga,
like watching your shows as a kid and relizing it wasn't so great.
We all know its going to happen. It will print money, thus Square Enix won't be able to resist forever.
@Metropolis:
No, I'm pretty sure that honor goes to XII
@vig0r: I thought the same exact thing when I saw the tech demo :) Especially since the 10 year anniversary just passed.
They probably wanted to do 13 first to get used to PS3 development, so that they do a better job on 14(VII 2) :P
@SoamX: FF VIII was better?!? They made the main character look like Leonardo Di Caprio (this was around the same time Titanic came out). That was was definately not the best. But you must have been adicted to the "card playing" games. Go aorund the world challenging people to a game of cards and collecting "rare" cards. How fun!
@KeroseneClimax: I couldn't agree more. I'd much rather see a brand new game then a remake of a game that's already perfectly playable as is. I don't really get the clamor for a remake.. just... play it! I feel like the FVII world has pretty much been beaten to death at this point anyway, just let a dead horse lie!
I think if Microsoft are really serious about breaking into Japan they should pay Squeenix an absolute fortune to do an FFVII remake exclusively on 360. Could Japan resist the 360's lure with FFVII on it?
I like how seriously they're taking it. The "FFVI OR NOTHING" crowd be damned, FFVII is the most important title in that franchise and anyone with a brain knows it whether the game was up to their tastes or not.
@King of Kings: Actually, Squall was based on Gackt from Malice Mizer. So was Tidus for that matter.
@Black-Dog-Howls: So? It's still the either the most or like, second most popular game ever made.
What, would you prefer they remake FFX?
"HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA"
Actually I wouldn't mind if they re-voiceover X, then it might be playable.
