The latest issue of PlayStation: The Official Magazine has more info on what-looks-like playable Metal Gear Solid memories in MGS4. According to the magazine, cut scenes at the beginning of the missions refer to the franchise's evolution. What's more:
...as characters talk and reference other stars of this universe, you may see an X or L1 button icon quickly flash on the screen. Hit the right button while it's highlighted and you'll be treated to a very brief context flashback. Basically, the system uses images and moments from the past Metal Gear games to help visually rekindle your own memories of the who, what, where, and why.
In short: Clues you into what the fuck is going on. Helpful!
Thanks, T.G. for the tip!

That is so sweet. I'm hyped for this even more now.
Oh My GOD! That Monkey's wearing a DIAPER!
That seems like a really logical and awesome way of letting people understand without total knowledge of previous games. :D
@Aprocalypse: In a way it could even inspire beginners to purchase previous installments of the game.
Really it's win win for everyone.
Sweet. So, when Revolver Ocelot is mentioned, think we can relive that torture mini game from MGS?
Also, please don't kill the poor monkey. :(
Very creative. Well played, Kojima. I'm not all that interested in MGS4, but this news does nudge me a little closer to a potential future purchase.
*serious question* whats the cheapest way to get a ps3, idc how big it is or w/e, i just want to be able to play games, and remember it has to be cheap <- was actualy dumb enuff to buy xbox 360 arcade so will buy anything ps cuz BUILT IN HARDRIVE taht can be changed
With all the twist that happen in MGS i think it's only right that they do this. Either way it would be nice to have a MGS1 and MGS2 and 3 in these new graphics. I would buy instantly. Even though it may never happen :(
@D Mitsuki: I think the 40GB are $399, but there is a $499 bundle when the game comes out with a 40Gb PS3, Dualshock 3 and the game!
Sometimes I feel stupid for having magazine subscriptions.....
More on topic -- I'm more excited than ever for MGS 4.
@VileMethoD: Thats exactly what I did today, I bought the Metal gear essential collection. Even though I can;t afford a PS3 right now when I get it and MGS4 at least I will have an idea whats going on.
@slikz21: D00D THATS A FUCKTON ;(, like how much do you think they will sell it for used or at a pawn shop or somthing because 400 dollars will take me till the ps4 comes out
@ slikz21: You mean 80gb.
@ D Mitsuki: He means 80gb.
Excellent feature.
Can't wait for this game.
I wonder if MGS2 will make any more sense in flashback form :-D
@slikz21:
The MGS4 bundle is an 80gig PS3 with software backward compatibility. Given MGS4 is going to put $60 on the $399 40Gig machine the bundle is actually real good VFM.
This has been known for a while now hasn't it? Nothing like the actual game "flashback" we saw in that new trailer though.
@D Mitsuki:
Dude, or in your case, dood...PS3 is expensive, next-gen gaming is expensive, so deal with it. I suggest you stick with your Xbox if you want gaming to be cheap.
@TheSonicGamer:
xbox is cheap only if you do the bare essentials. A few add-on's, couple years subscriptions and it ain't any cheaper.
@TheSonicGamer: i have a wii and xbox 360 i play in hd on my moniter, if you can tell me a way the price is 300 i will be able to get it if not gg for me
@Sparx: paying over time in smaller ammounts even if it accumulates to be more is better for me because if i save money it gets taken away due to financial problems so i dont mind getting a gypted type ps3 and upgrading it (i really want to play mgs4 as you can tell >_>)
@D Mitsuki:
If thats for you thats fine. I'm just saying that people who complain about the pricetag of the PS3 usually dont realize how close or over they are with their "cheaper" system.
Hm... From that trailer we saw with Snake at Shadow Moses, the flashbacks are more like abstract dreams. Obviously, Snake doesn't have the psychological profile of a normal person, or soldier, for that matter. The Shadow Moses that Snake sees in his dream is empty and desolate, which is probably used to give psychological depth to Snake. Great storytelling technique.
I'd suggest in all seriousness seeing if places rent the PS3 out if that's your financial position. Do they even do this anymore?
@D Mitsuki: That's a sad way to go about things. =(
But around here, I see that Craigslist has postings (though not so much anymore) of people selling their 40GB PS3's for ~$350 or so. If you can get a bundle w/ the Spiderman 3 Bluray, you can probably sell that to offset some of the cost.
Otherwise, just look for someone to trade your 360+cash for a PS3.
@Sparx: Im not complaining or flaming or anything, i actualy just kinda want to play mgs4, my systems cost 250 plus tax and 270 plus tax, i got them both basicly out of luck, and im not sure but i think 400 bucks is just a little more then 270...
@Datheron: Thanks i forgot all about askign people xD that may work, but i like all my game console's and want to play ninja gaiden 2 and gears of war 2. I wish we lived in a perfect world with one gaming system so i didn't have to buy all this stuff >_> being poor ftl i mean dont laugh to hard but i game on this [i138.photobucket.com]
@Magic Emperor Anima: I think they will need a solid half hour series of flashbacks to explain Ocelot and Liquid's current situation. Should be fun though. I never finished the first MGS so I'm glad I won't have to play back through the series before June 12.
@D Mitsuki:
I said that was fine for you, its understandable with things like that. I meant no agitation in your direction. My comment was more or less supposed to be for other lifeless frat boys and such who make ignorant comparisons
This is a great idea, in my opinion. (referring to the article, not the various conversations about the ps3 in general, of course). I love cutscenes. Shoot, I'd rather have to, given the fact that I actually played through most of the Xenosaga series. That being said, sometimes it would have been nice to have something to make it at least a little more interactive.
@D Mitsuki: If your old enough to apply for a credit card, you could apply for the sony card and buy a PS3 from the sonystyle website and get $100 off, giving you a 40 GB for $300.
I got my 60 GB last year for $350 when that deal was for $150 off.
@Kj719: Advising someone whose "money gets taken away" if he saves it "due to financial problems" to get a credit card is... lame. Even more lame than taking a hit on your credit report and opening a crappy card such as Sony instead of something that gives decent rewards for a miserable $100.
We, like, knew this for forever, dude.
I think it was mentioned in the KojiPro podcast once.
woo just came back from watching this movie, i recommend it to anyone. and stay past the credits for the extra scene.
@maxax: If I haven't heard it, it's news to me, dude.
ah crap posted on the wrong page...
This is not going to work. If I miss one of those cues I'm going to freak out thinking I'm missing something, and if I miss one bit of information from cutscenes in Metal Gear Solid games I'm clueless for the rest of the story.
I'd rather get a bonus disk with these extras like in Metal Gear Solid 3.
@Cartman86: Yes it has. I'm not about to spout "old news" or any such thing. Some people don't know about this and would probably like to be informed. However, as a daily Kotaku reader, I've been privy to this info forever. The real news to me was seeing that new footage of actually getting to play the flashbacks. This info sheds no more light on the subject. Love you Ashcraft, but I would think you've known about this forever as well, right?
Wait, no R1 for looking at... things...
so sort of like a "Previously on Metal Gear Solid"?
@ZombiePuppy: If you think you'll miss them, just bash x during any and all custscenes. :D
Oh dear gawds.
MGS4 is going to be sponsored by Coke, in which you'll see the monkey give a can of Coke to a polar bear, and there will be peace and harmony on the battlefield, and maybe even singing about how you might want to give the world a Coca-cola.
@Pezdispenser: actually the monkey is wearing short jeans.
Coke Monkey! that Funky Monkey! Oooo, You got the can, I got the cup, now c'mon everybody, lets get ******* up.
@D Mitsuki: You need a job first. Then 400 isnt a "fuck ton". You can buy them off craigs list much cheaper at a "used" price. Most people who work at gamestop make all their money off craigslist fyi.
Hmmm I find it weird no one has brought up the fact that in the TGS trailer we notice Snake fighting Liquid at Shadow Moses both in Metal Gears. I don't think that's a cutscene more like, the final act of the game. We been told it all comes full circle. that would absolutely make sense. Especially since they keep being very secretive about the last two locations you visit in MGS4.
Cant wait to eat that monkey
Pray 4 Mojo
@Sonasu: Seems clear enough to me that the Shadow Moses clip that was released on 5/1 isn't what's being reported on in this update.
Yup, nothing new to see here. He's not answering anything we want to know, really.
I'm just interested in whether we'll be able to play a snippet of Brawl in MGS4.
Cos that would be seriously awesomesauce.
