No surprises here! None at all! Japan's Dengeki Online polled a few of its readers, asking "Which video game do you want remade?" The results are:
1. Final Fantasty VII
2. Xenogears
3. Seiken Densetsu 3
4. Romancing Saga 3
5. Tactics Ogre
Holy shit! Japanese people really like FF VII. Did not know that. Hit the jump for the rest, along with other thrilling data.
6. Megami Ibunroku Perusona
7. Final Fantasy IX
8. Romancing SaGa 3
9. Saga Frontier
10. Wild Arms 2
Which platforms do they want the remakes to appear on? In order of popularity: PSP, PS3, PS2, DS, Wii and Xbox 360.
The biggest factor polled Dengeki readers would take into account was "improved graphics." That's usually how they do it!

Americans want Xenogears remade, too. :)
FF IX? Thats surprising. Never knew it was liked that much.
A Romancing SaGa 3 or SaGa Frontier remake would be fucking brilliant.
Persona, too.
Actually, I wouldn't mind a remake of ANY of these games. Nice work, Japan, although Suikoden needs mention on that list. =/
Why is Romancing Saga/SaGa 3 on that list twice?
Why is Chrono Trigger not on that list? D:
Yeah I do agree Saga Frontier 1 + 2 do need a remake.
Saga 3 would be epic. Best bad ending ever.
Along with that list, I'd like to see Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy Tactics.
@Highlander Wolf: Hell yes. A proper second disc would be nice.
@NitrousO: IX was my favorite of the series. Up there with VI, anyway.
@Lezard: Its Saga FRONTIER big difference.
Bah, i never got to play xenogears. Stupid PAL territories...
@Archaotic: The original Persona? That game was kind of bad, I'd rather see both Persona 2 games in a compilation of some kind. Getting Innocent Sin now that American game companies aren't so censorship-happy would be awesome.
@Stormrider:
Persona 1 was kinda bad because it was horribly translated, and a lot of stuff was left out (the entire Ice Queen quest line, for example) of the US release.
The real game is awesome. Better than 2 or 3, in my opinion.
seiken densetsu 3 remake would make me buy whatever console they put it on =x
@Witzbold: #4 & #8 = Romancing Saga 3 on this list.
Xenogears would make an amazing remake. I'm really pleasantly surprised to see Wild Arms 2, Saga Frontier and Tactics Ogre on the list too. I'm a little shocked the original Suikoden isn't.
@Witzbold: Look again at 4 and 8.
PLEEEEAAAASEEEEE Xenogears!!!!
@Witzbold: Man, I have been hoping for a DS Chrono Trigger remake for a long time now. If they're going to put all the SNES Final Fantasies and Dragon Quests on it, why not their other great game of that era?
Remakes are always shite.
Set people to work on a new experience, damnit!
@Stormrider:
I'm almost wondering if the reason we never see any Chrono stuff is because Square actually respects the masterpiece CT was so much that even their businessmen refuse to hand it off to TOSE for a quick port-job.
They HAVE to know that the fans want it, so what other reason would they have? Toriyama wouldn't care, after all.
@Lezard: I noticed that too... 3 Sagas. 2 repeats with different G capitalizations... are they different games? I'm not too versed on them.
I had a list like this... nobody bothered to read it :( *cries in corner* NO EMO. *goes to sleep and forgets about work*
@NitrousO: Final Fantasy IX was loved one heck of a lot more in Japan, as opposed to the US. This is mainly because it was looked on as Final Fantasy coming back to its roots (aka Final FANTASY, as opposed to Final Futuristic Sci-Fi Thriller). In fact, it is also viewed by Sakaguchi Hironobu, the creator of the Final Fantasy series, as his favorite Final Fantasy game.
In other words, yes, FF IX definitely has quite a few fans out there. Just not as many as FF VII.
@Archaotic: I gotta disagree, even without the horrible translation I think the combat systems in 2 and 3 were much better.
@Stormrider: In this month's Nintendo pOwer they were talking about other SE franchises getting a DS Remake (they interviewed the guy doing 4), but Chrono Trigger was only vaguely mentioned by the interviewer.
As much as I think FFVII is terribly overrated, sometimes it seems like the guys at SquareEnix are allergic to making money. That game would sell millions, guaranteed.
@Archaotic: I dunno, this is Square Enix we're talking about. FFVI was a masterpiece too, but that hasn't prevented them from rereleasing it. Although I suppose they haven't technically talked about putting it on the DS yet, but I think everyone sort of accepts that after 3 and 4 it's just a matter of time.
I almost hope they don't, to be honest. I'm not sure how well the DS's 3D capacity would capture the spirit of the original sprite art.
Aeris should NOT have small Bazoombas :P Other than that, I'd vote for Xenogears and FFVII as well.
@Stormrider:
I tried to play Persona 2 a few months ago and honestly couldn't get the battle system at all. Perhaps it was because I was playing the game on a PS1 emulator, but it just seemed weird, it felt like I didn't have any control over the battles, and I hate that. It just felt weird.
P3's battle system is novel, but I can't stand having no control over my teammates. I can never be sure if they're going to be smart, or fuck me over. That and it discourages creative battle strategies, as you can never be sure what they're going to do. That's not to say either game is bad, though.
The Japanese sure love their RPGs.
@Stormrider:
If FF6 gets a DS remake, with those hideous Kewpie Doll character models and no voice acting, I'm going to snap my DS in half. :[
FF7 is certainly overrated, but it's about as close to a masterpiece for a RPG as you're going to get.
@Lezard: #8 should be Romancing Saga 2.
@Stormrider: I should clarify here that I am only referring to Eternal Punishment when i say Persona 2, since I've never played Innocent Sin for obvious reasons.
@Lezard: According to the site, #8 should be Romancing SaGa 2.
Damn I so want a FFVII and Xenogears remakes.
Damn right FFIX should be remade.
I want to try this Final Fantasty VII. I have feeling it would be delicious.
@Archaotic: Ha, we keep responding while the other person is typing. And I felt like the tactics gave me enough control over the other characters in P3 that I rarely felt handicapped by it. For example, I just set Mitsuru to Full Assault all the time so she would do what she was good at (namely, blasting the shit out of things with Ice spells) and not the annoying stuff (status effects).
I might be just letting my love for Persona 3 bias my feelings on the other two games though. I just finished the original game on FES last night, I'm going to probably start the Answer tomorrow. It's probably the first time I've enjoyed a JRPG this much in years.
Persona 2 is better than Persona 3
@Stormrider:
I'm the same way about Lost Odyssey, myself. P3's a great game, I have FES down in my living room, but Lost Odyssey's the only JRPG in a while that's taken and KEPT my attention...it's probably because it's not trying to be an entire anime series compressed into one disc, unlike most modern JRPGs.
But ah well, it's my favorite genre, I'm just getting pickier as I get older. And I still will cry and/or kill people if FF6 gets a cheap-ass DS remake and not a console or PSP one with actual graphics and voice acting in it. =/
@Archaotic: Your mention of Suikoden brings warm fuzzies to my heart.
Mother 3 would be nice... or Dragon Force.. anyone? Dragon Force? Guardian Heroes...? Oh wait, does that even count?...
@Archaotic: I feel the same way about Lost Odyssey. I've been burnt out on JRPGs for a while now, but Lost Odyssey has been one of the most refreshing and entertaining games I've played in a while. Old school combat system or not (I like it, BTW), the game is just damned good.
seriously square, remake ffvii! Japan wants it, America, the WORLD! Just do it already.
Hmmm, I'm pretty sure I could've guessed at least half of that list.
7 out of 10 games are from Squaresoft/Enix. This does not surprise me, neither does FF7 being at the top of the list or Romancing Saga 3 being on twice.
Suikoden 2 and Chrono Trigger needs to be on the top 5.
@Captain Impulse:
Agreed. The music, the characters, the battle system...it's just so refreshing to see a JRPG that doesn't try to be insanely unique and end up being insanely stereotypical.
Instead, it looks back at what made older RPGs great and, I dunno. It feels like an homage to the classics of the PS1 era and before.
Not to mention it's just undeniably pretty. To this day it's probably one of the only Unreal Engine 3 games I've ever played where the graphics and art style have impressed me!
Dammit, my money was on Skullmonkeys.
@Trowble (XBL/PSN):
This. Thank you for being so very right.
If they remake FF7, I hope along with improved graphics, they have at least twice the variety of monsters.
It'd be nice to have less duplicate monster fights, especially considering most of us will have played through it at least once before. It'd be nice of them to include creatures from the more recent FF games into the database. Also, a fully interactive golden saucer would be pretty sweet . . .
But yeah, as far as the list goes, not surprising at all.
Yeah. Remake Final Fantasy 7 on PS2. Good suggestion, Japan. Idiots.
