You Might Get Another Unreal Game. Maybe.

Unreal's an engine that's making Epic some serious money. Pity, then, that Unreal as a franchise is a shadow of its former self. UTIII's done OK, don't get me wrong, but few at Epic or Midway would say it's performed as expected. So what does that mean for the proper Unreal games? You remember, those singleplayer ones with a story and stuff. What about them? Take it away, Mark Rein:

I'm sure that at some point in our future we will make another Unreal, single-player, story-driven game. I'm sure at some point there will be one...[however] there are no plans to do one today.
What about tomorrow? Oh yeah. Gears 2. OK, we'll get back to you in 2011, thanks.

  • 2011? Say it ain't so!

If Gears 2 doesn't make it's highly-touted November street date, I will be very unamused.

  • hmm. I find it somewhat odd that while I am a fan of the UT games I have yet to play any of the single player Unreal...

  • I've played every Unreal Tournament that there has been, but never any single player Unreal. Isn't multi player more of Epics cup of tea anyways?

  • @Captain Impulse: Hey, that's a guess. Based on the fact they'll have Gears 3 to finish as well. Might be 2012!

  • I'm going to grab UT3. The mods are so amazing.

  • Personally, I love UT3 and want it to succeed. I just don't think theres as much of a market for shooting-things-online-while-moving-really-fast anymore. People want a "story" in their shooters now.

  • They really should look at making UT3 into an actual PC game before going for another Unreal. Especially when Unreal kind of sucked, especially compared to the near-perfection of the original Unreal Tournament. Or just think of UT3 as another unfortunate UT2003 incident, and then make an awesome UT4 sort of UT2004 equivalent as soon as possible.

Gears of War sequels will be far bigger than a new Unreal as well, don't really see how it makes much business sense for them.

  • If UT4 = UT2k4 with better graphics, all the game modes, game play style and some of the cool gizmos in UT3... IM SOLD COMPLETELY.

  • Can they make a game that isn't a shooter?

  • What a shame, the original Unreal had the most epic single player campaign put into any FPS game ever. That was like 30 hours of extremely high quality content.

Of course today, they would have taken the same content and made a trilogy of games and made everyone drop $150 for the whole story.

  • @Kai_: Any suggestions?

I just got UT3 via the Unreal Pack on Steam, and was kind of let down to find out that it's not really popular among players.

I wonder if it's just going through UT2k3 syndrome.

  • well im not really a online multiplayer kinda person, but i played the single player stuff and it was really good, i'd say on par with with pc games, like prey, or even CoD games _________________________________________________________________ Bag extra points with the Walkers Brit Trip Game http://www.walkersbrittrips.co.uk/game

  • I think the problem with this games sales is are the system reqs, to really play the game, you have to have a gaming PC, not just a PC. In a year or two, when people have upgraded their PC's, this game will start selling. That's what I'm doing.

Freakin' consoles keep eating my money, though.

  • I should clarify- To play the game the way it should look, and feel, and actually compete online, you need a gaming PC. Can we please have an edit button?

  • Ut3 is a GREAT game, it's just... something happened... and all the lazy people didn't walk to the store and get the damn box... what happened? YOU CALL YOURSELF GAMERS?!?!

  • @The_Inquisitor:
I'm with you, buddy. the original Unreal was an awesome game with some of the best environments and enemy AI I've ever played against. I never got around to playing the second story-driven Unreal, though.

  • @Blah8:

I got rid of Unreal2 but I have the urge to play the first one again. Great game.
    Very atmospheric.

  • Inquisitor: you didn't lose much. I reviewed both for an Italian (print) magazine... the second was a big disappointment.
Legend Ent. looked great in paper and made some bold assertions, then they delivered Wheel of Time and U2... should have kept making infocom-like text adventures :)

  • ehm. The post above is directed at Blah8, not inquisitor. I'd like to have an edit button too, please... :)

  • I love UT3. I like UT2004 a lot more due to the enormous amount of content, but it's a shame more people don't play it. It's obscene that so many people play Halo 3 while it goes largely ignored (not because Halo is necessarily bad, but because UT3 is often just as good).

As for single-player Unreal, I won't be devastated if we don't see another. The first was great for it's time, but part 2 was thoroughly predictable and bland.

  • At first I thought they meant UT and I was going to say they were basically reskins.

But the single player ones? Those are actually pretty cool as fpses go. I miss the Skaarj (and Nali) already.

  • You may as well pick up UT3... it's $20 on direct2drive.

  • @The_Inquisitor: My mileage varied from yours, aside from a couple of ok moments the original unreal is the only FPS I have ever played that I enabled cheat codes to get to the end just to see it... I found it utterly unappealing outside the neat factor of the engine and some of the weapons being original. The texturing all looked (to me) like photoshop filtering built up to create a quick texture, rather than painted or photographed artwork that was manipulated. This may have been due to the detailed texturing process, but made the texturing look bland to me.

The color and look of the enemies was very muppety to me. The skaarj's huge silly feet and the teddy bear with rocket launcher arms... The original Skaarj design in preview screens was much lovelier.

The multiplayer gameplay was nice as was UT but I never much liked the art direction and story.

Unreal 2 I liked a bit more, but I wasn't interested enough to even finish it at the time.
The multiplayer addon for that was also refreshingly different than UT but unfortunately never caught on.

I really don't care if we ever see another Unreal singleplayer game.
I honestly just don't care for Unreal characters/universe.

I did love Ut2k4 but feel that Ut3 is a step backwards, outside the larger amount of vehicles.

  • I would love to see what they could do with Unreal 3. Unreal was fantastic, with the most varied settings I've ever seen in a game (temples, sky castles, spaceships etc), and some great monsters and unusual weapons.
Unreal 2 had a fantastic story that was very engaging, and some cool settings, but overall was only quite average as a shooter. But to think what Epic could do...

  • I would love a proper sequel to Unreal 1, the game was amazing and I've played it from start to finish multiple times(the only bad thing I can remember were those enemies that had invulnerability half the time, annoying). Pretty much everything about it was memorable, the sounds(especially the Nali), the different and really cool settings, e.t.c.

The only game comparable in single player to the original Unreal is Half Life 1. The AI of the commandos made the battles with them very satisfying(which I've repeated possibly hundreds of times, before getting bored of it) and it also had variyng settings, although they weren't as interesting as in Unreal.

  • Loved the first Unreal. Had Epic(no pun) music great game overall. I hope they make another one. I'm getting sick of just UT games.

  • The first Unreal it's my favorite FPS of all time. The atmosphere, music, sense of solitud, everything on it, I love it.

When Unreal 2 came out, I was hyped as hell, only to find something that just wasn't the same Unreal I knew and loved.

I'm not saying Unreal 2 is a bad game, but it's just too different.

I want my classic Unreal back in Hi-Def!

  • @Kris_:

Exact same thing happened to me. Loved the hell out of the first one for those same reasons.

  • Unreal1 was a great game, but unreal 2 on the other hand...meh.
