Molyneux, Molyneux, Molyneux! That's all we hear PETER MOLYNEUX!! In the famed game designer's defence, he tells The Guardian:
For a long, long time I've been credited unduly... Not so much these days, because the role of a designer is much, much more understood. But for a very long time, I was way, way over-credited for many things.
Warms your heart doesn't it? Peter Molyneux saying he's gotten too much credit. Fuzzy feelings all around.

So long as he doesn't think he's being under-credited.
He'll get credit when he delivers on his outlandish claims.
Peter always seems to speak from the heart ;-)
Who?
In other words, don't put all the blame on me if Fable 2 is shit!
(kidding)
He gets a lot of shit for not delivering all of his promises, but I still have greatly enjoyed every game he has designed.
Peter is ones of those guys like Kojima who has unbelievable creative ambition, when they start a project it becomes everything. For that he has my respect, even if his games are apparently "neutered". I'll still buy, and love to death, each of his games.
How much of very little credit can we give him? His games haven't been any good so far.
Sorry, Peter!
I was doing what now?
Shit, I'll admit it! I like hearing him talk :|
Ouch, let's hope Pete is reading these comments, his ego might take a hit.
@Kai_: You are kidding right?
@Kai_: I would have to wholeheartedly disagree.
Translation: Don't blame me when Fable 2 sucks.
Addendum: I really hope Fable 2 doesn't suck.
@Ignatius: I don't know about you but I plan to buy a box of tissue with my copy of Fable 2. I'm going raise sparky and shoot him in the ribcage right before the game ends and then cry over his body to see if a get an Achievement :|
Actually, why does this guy think he's such hot shit? What the hell has he done? Black and White seems to be the only game he's made that got really good reviews.
I think he is getting less credit because we have all become wise to his games.
@jambe: Dude, seriously have you not heard of Bullfrog? Populous? Dungen Keeper?
Mate, I would run for the hills or put on some serious flame proof clothing.
I give him credit for overhyping games and boasting features that aren't in the final release. *eyes his copy of Fable*
He sure did deliver on that Populous though. That was like a team of him and 3 other guys.
looking at my copy of the Hollywood Industry simulation "The Movies", I say
"he was one of the greatest game designers of the 80's and early 90's"
but he is no Miyamoto, a guy that actually delivers...
Leave uncle Pete alone, you bastids.
He's so modest! We should give him more credit than ever!
stop with the red eyes kotaku, you'll make people think I'm a devil worshipper.
(and the last thing I need is them getting suspicious)
Mo' liek blame, m i rite?
@okenny :): Haha, I laughted for about five minutes after reading that :D
@okenny :): Achievement Unlocked: Old Yeller, 100G.
lol more glowing red eyes on the decidedly evil gaming company executives and directors.
I am entertained.
I like Pete, but then again I was around for his greatest hits. If I were only around from Fable to present I think I probably wouldn't have as high of an opinion of him as I do now.
HEY PETER! I'm still waiting for Dungeon Keeper 3!
When this guy talks, it's the length of a novel.. You also have to add in the narration as if somebody is reading that novel.
Congratulations on him:
1) Talking without going over 20 paragraphs.
2) Without talking about something as if there is some great mystique or grandeur about it.
3) Admitting to something to degrade his credibility.
I love the guy, but god.. When he talks.. He really TALKS.
The article referenced claims that "CliffyB rose to prominence with the Xbox 360 release of Gears of War."
CliffyB has been a household name for PC gamers since the original UT was released in 1999...
@fenderfuel08: Yes, Ash has made it his new thing. Officially. :)
@Spoony Bard:
I love it. I can't help myself.
ALL APOLOGIES.
m(_ _)m
Gossip ahead!
I've heard from Lionhead employees (and ex employees) that Peter hardly does any work these days (or on anything he did at Lionhead).
I mean, they said he was basically clueless about his CURRENT projects.
Their conclusion was that he's become a sort of figurehead...if that's true I tend to agree.
Scene - Dayligh restaurant where everyone has Molyneux's face. The real Peter Molyneux sits at the table.
Waiter: Molyneux. Molyneux. Molyneux. Molyneux. Molyneux.
Woman: Molyneux.
Waiter: Molyneux, Molyneux, Molyneux?
(A terrified Peter Molyneux looks at the menu, every choice is Molyneux).
Peter: M...m...Molyneux!
[gametruth.wordpress.com]
"Nobody in the games industry takes Peter Molyneux seriously any more. Worse, nobody in Lionhead takes him seriously either except when he gets into one of his legendary picky moods. Even more hilarious is that Peter the Mouthpiece has turned into one of the blandest corporate whores ever since his failing ailing money-losing studio was bought/rescued from self-destruction for a small amount of chunk change to save Fable 2.
The image around this guy is legendary, with his OBE and his ability to craft a perfect message for journos, but just as legendary is his lack of actually doing any work on any of the games that are "his". The Movies, Black and White 2, Fable, Theme Park, Dungeon Keeper and Syndicate are basically games built by other people. Everybody knows it, even most journalists, but they give Molyneux a blind pass because he occupies that untouchable space reserved for industry mouthpieces. As long as the man is good copy, whatever he says goes."
Wow, he manages to come off as pretentious even when he's trying to sound modest. Petey, don't force yourself, we like you just the way you are.
+ Watch video
Ooooh, the videos I posted yesterday on the IGN-hooker-killing-clip post! For those who can't get the vids to play, they're still up on the show's website: www.thedailyshow.com .
@mcderek3000: Ha-ha! Thanks for giving me my first good laugh of the day (about time, too, it's already 11AM).
@Antiterra: Huh, what just happened? My browser crashed right after I posted my comment, and somehow "fused" my reply to the GTA IV/Daily Show thread with this one. WTF?!
While I have enjoyed every single game by Molyneux I've played back to the Atari ST, I have never ever paid much heed to what the guy says.. instead I've waited for his games to come out and then enjoy the living meatballs out of them. I don't care how much or little he actually has to do with them... they're all fun.
And I most definitely can't wait for Fable 2... as long as they keep the coop I don't care about anything else. That's one of the few things I've ever let myself be hyped about in a Molyneux game before it's released... but then I'm a sucker for coop games :)
He's right though, for a long time people over-credited him for the Bullfrog-era games that owed a large debt to the talented programmers and artists working on them. It's natural for the media to want to latch onto a personality - one person - and Peter plays this role well. However the reality is always far more complex - many talented people worked on Populous etc.
It's like staring into oblivion.
I've never seen him pretend he's the whole studio. He's said many times he sucks at coding. Good to see him point out the others though. I agree about publishers too - even if you know the difference and want to keep it straight, it can be hard to tell whether a game is made by the publisher or another studio.
@KM91: Maybe he'll get some ideas from Bethesda as to how to make Fable 2 better. ;)
