DBZ Burst Limit - Trunks Vs. Recoome

Here's a clip from Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit, showing off the battle stylings of the proof that Vegeta and Bulma got it on, Trunks, and the giant developmentally-disabled child Recoome. Things seem to be going well for the big lug until Trunks' hair gets blond and spiky, and then even spikier. Blond and spiky equals doom. As far as the gameplay goes, I was far more impressed by earlier screenshots than I am by the game in motion, especially in light of what I've seen of Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm. Face it Dragon Ball Z, it's much easier for fans to slip on a Leaf Village headband than craft their own giant foam hair. Maybe it's time to hang up the emergency orange outfits and move on. *flees*

  • Meh, it looks okay,
    but it's over nine thousand!
    Obligatory....

  • The console series is finally back in the hands of Dimps. I expect this game to be very, very good.

  • I did like the in-fight dodging. Though I think DB is well beyond its prime.

  • Hurray, it's back to the old play style. The free roam fighters were lame imo.

  • This might not look as (incredibly) detailed as N:UNS, but it still looks playable and much better than the last Budokai games.

  • Still waiting for BlueBalz

  • Am I the only one who thinks the Tenkaichi series was awesome? I loved the free flying gameplay.

IMO that series got the feeling of the series better than the Budokai series.

Where can I get that rockin' soundtrack? There is no better musical accompaniment to Sluggish Spiky Steroid Laser Battle than Kenny G!

  • Naruto wears an emergency orange jumpsuit too. ;)

    @Dorphat the Insomniac:
    It looks a bit slow
but now the balls are inert!
    Was necessary...

  • Wow...that looks pretty cool. My only desire for a DBZ game is that it looks like you're watching an episode of the show when you're really playing the game. This seems to nail that dead on.

@Truvill: Bluebalz?! What is this game you speak of?!

  • I really liked the 3D games more then how this looks. The 3D ones were a bit hard to get used to, but once you did they played really well.
Budokai Tenkaichi 3 played like a champ once you got to grips with all the dashing and comboing attacks together. It just seems much more fluid then this one to me.

Its probably just me here, but Dragon Ball in 2D-ish just doesn't seem right. :/

@Fatmumuhomer: In actuality, an episode of DBZ would be three minutes of hardcore fighting and then the villain stopping midway to explain why he's so strong or his motives, and then it leads to a 10 minute flashback. Then before you know it...

    "Next time...on DragonBall Z!"

  • @Khabi: Exactly how I feel.

  • @Fatmumuhomer: Then each fight should be over 6 hours long with 5 hours and 55 minutes of both characters building up their energy.

I'm sorry, you threw me a softball, and I had to swing :)

  • @Magic Emperor Anima: I think he meant BlazBlue, a Beat'em'Up frpm ASW

  • @F-7:

Is there a way to edit posts?
    Guess not.

  • As someone who watched DBZ growing up, once Trunks (or any Saiyan for that matter) gets an insane power up, you should be able to swat away all ki attacks with the back of your hand. Or just block it with one hand. I remember watching the show and those were the best moments.

  • What's up with that music. Doesn't really scream exciting battle sequence

  • @Truvill: If you truly intended to write BlueBalz then bravo sir.

@Magic Emperor Anima: BlueBlaz(a 2d fighting game by arc).

  • @SilentPredator: Another reason Tenkaichi is awesome. You could just bat ki away with your hand. Ahh the glory.

  • The best DBZ game ever is Dragon Ball Z Legends.

  • Poor Reacoom, FUNimation took one look at him and said "he looks dumb, lets make him sound like an idiot." he's actually quite smart in the Japanese version.

  • See, they really should just go all out, and make an engine where each fight last 3 hours, powerups take 5 minutes to do each, where every move resembles a summon from crisis core, the screen arbitrarily shakes every 4 seconds, with constant screaming and absurd action music. And to top it off, it would just flash the word "EXTREME" on the screen every 12 seconds, and the load screens would be an ad for Xtreme cheddar Cheetos. That would be memorable.

  • @Arttemis: There's a reason the "Tenkaichi" games were so different from the Budokai games, they aren't actually Budokai games. Atari decided to cash in on the popularity of the Budokai games and advertise them as such. In Japan the games titles are completely different (Budokai games were just DBZ, DBZ2, and DBZ3. Tenkaichi were Sparking!, Sparking! NEO, and Sparking! METEOR), and the developers are different as well (Dimps did the Budokai games, Spike did the Tenkaichi games). Dimps is the one developing Burst Limit.

@F-7 @risingphoenix: I know, I know...just that the balz part was kind of random, even though it was a mistake. I'm looking forward to it too.

  • This looks just like all the other DBZ games when are they ever going to put some effort into it for once. I watched the show when i was a kid like crazy and what i dont get about these games they always make Trunks able to go SSJ2 when in show he never could,
    "okay rant over"

  • @AsauPrime: It could just be the music Atari put over the video. I remember in another video they put out with the same music played over the audio you could faintly hear the actual game music "underneath" the music they were playing. The state of the music the game will be using is quite confusing.

Early details from Japan said the game would have "remastered" music from the show. The Tenkaichi games also used music from the show, but Atari replaced it with their own original music because FUNimation's English dub didn't use the Japanese music at the time, although with the new season boxsets they have included a dub with Japanese music track. Later reports said that the game would be using original music like the Budokai games did. It's currently unclear which the game will actually be using.

  • I perfer 3D. This game is being rushed to make money.

  • @Erwin:
I hope this game scores over 9000!
    Had to be done...

  • IMO I like Tenkaichi's hectic gameplay much much better. Even if it takes more time to master, it's really Dragon Ball-style fighting. Besides, it's like Dragon Ball Legends only with steroids, facial, and an M.D.

Damn, if i had tenkaichi 3 10 years ago back when I was an absolute DB nut (DB>DBZ>>>>DBGT yo) it'd would've been perfect. It was the DB game I always dreamed of, but sadly nowadays I seem to got over the whole Dragon Ball stuff.

  • Unfortunately for DBZ, Naruto really raised the bar on cell shading.

The developers working on this better release the game soon or send it back to match CC2.

  • OVER 9000 FAILS

  • IDK guys, its hard for me to judge this game off two mediocre players messing around. I did get to try the game out myself and it was a lot of fun after I learned the control scheme.

  • Oh, this one is by Dimps!? Now im impressed. I hope Dimps dips (oh,oh,oh... im sad, I know) their hands on a Wii version of DBZ in the future.

  • Image of ManjiKengo ManjiKengo at 02:22 PM on 04/30/08 *

both games look great, but the naruto game is even amazinger.

  • Correction: He's the proof that Vegeta and Bulma WILL get it on sometime in the future... I guess Vegeta is happy.

  • Oh, and please stop with the never-funny "over 9000" jokes.

  • Looks kind of like every other DBZ battle. Maybe a little nicer looking. Not really a big fan of the combat system

  • Hey, that looked pretty good! Methinks your criticism is unduly harsh. The cutscenes were sort of "meh", but the fighting animation was excellent!

  • Akira Toriyama was smart... Stopping after Z. GT was some random crap. Although I believe he should have stopped at the Original Dragon Ball.

DRAGON BALL GAMES HAVE TO STOP. The only fun one for me was the Tenkaichi on the Wii... and taht was because it was quirkily fun and somewhat involving. The original SNES fighter and the beat em ups for the GBA were also decent. STOP MAKING Dragon ball Games. Well... Unless you make a final one. With every frickin character EVER. Like with the frogs and pilaf from the OG DB and the hopeless civilians that have like 2HP.

No game based on the movie plz. thx

  • Am I the only person who doesn't give a flying fuck about Naruto? This game looks fun though.

  • I've been a fan of the shows since the end of DBZ, GT blows. As such I was pleased when I bought my ps2 and purchased the Budokai series of games thinking that they would be a rip-roaring good time. Once you've played one budokai game, you've played them all. Since then I've sold all the games in leu of the PSP version hoping that the portable games would help re-kindle my love of the characters by allowing me the ability to play them anywhere, be it train, plane, or automobile. While the Shin budokai games were great, particularly another road, mainly because of the characters and the fact that Goku can finally go to level 4 in a game, I just haven't been able to pick up the games and not feel guilty about not playing something better.

While I will probably buy this game, simply because it has more characters, I don't expect much out of it. I have this opinion because if I feel if I keep my expectations low maybe the game will surprise me somehow.

  • Not bad.

  • Been there done that.

  • Looks great. Also I might be wrong but it looks a bit faster which is great IMO

  • @SilentPredator: Yeah I have great childhood memories watching this on Club Dorothe. French V.O. FTW !

  • I liked the Tenkaichi series, it had a more of open free roam type experience, reminded me of the Half-Life mod, Earth Special Forces.

  • Image of NeoAkira NeoAkira at 04:05 PM on 04/30/08 *

The budokai series was pretty bad. The tenkaichi series was better and contained more of the essence of a fight in DBZ. This game just looks like a digression of the fighting system with prettier graphics.

  • Tenkaichi games were infinitely better than the Budokai games, and this game looks like 12 steps backwards for the series. Oh look, again we get a game that ditches fun and new ideas for a "next-gen" veneer of better particle effects and bloom lighting. Call me when graphics max out and we can get back to making new, fun games.

  • Meh... Naruto was 'ONE' of the reasonss I broke and bought a PS3 it looks so amazing. And I know nothing about Naruto besides my brothers won't shut up about it.

I was impressed with this DBZ game till the first video of Naruto came out.

Maybe the next version of DBZ will get it right.

  • @Hollowcow: I wasn't aware. Now that they've been out a while, I might have to see if I can find a used copy somewhere.

  • These guys need to realize that since there were so many Budokai games, this HAS to be perfect right away.

  • The graphics are good, but the gameplay looks lame, especially when compared to Tenkaichi Budokai 2 (haven't played 3 yet). I'm now trying to figure out how his sword strikes got longer after he went Super Saiyan...

  • That's not authentic! It only took 2 seconds for him to powerup, not 3 episodes of nonsensical dialog and numerous flashbacks.

  • Image of Erwin Erwin at 07:04 PM on 04/30/08 *

@Stevedroid: And they got two commercial breaks for every Kamehameha.

  • "I'm now trying to figure out how his sword strikes got longer after he went Super Saiyan..."

maybe its something like putting energy into it so its not actually the sword past a certain point and just focused energy.

They do this in naruto :D so why not DBZ too... (higher power-level lets him put more energy into it??).

or perhaps its reverse physics (faster moving objects get LONGER instead of shorter!) and thus the sword moves faster at higher powerlevels and thanks to the reverse physics gets even longer :D

(according to physics objects get shorter in the direction they are moving. so in reality as the sword is moving 'up' it wouldnt change length in the 'outward' direction at-all... so err, ignore me :)

  • Can't wait for this. Looks WAY better than Budokai 3, which, in my opinion, was the best out of all the DBZ fighting games.

  • @ph15h needs a nu job:He had planned to stop at the end of Dragon Ball but it had caught on and thus brought about Z. He had again planned to stop at the end of the Freeza Saga, but Toei asked him to keep going and pushed him to even at the end of Dragon Ball Z, where he took his time making a pretty clearly defined ending ep.

One of the biggest reasons GT is poor is because it's only 64 eps and A.T took a backseat role when it came to it's production as by this time he was sick and tired of DBZ and it reflected in the show.

As for all of the cracks about how drawn out everything was, Toei is to blame for that. The manga moves as a far quicker pace and it has just as much if not more dialog. What Toei did was simply to stretch out the ep count, something that a number of large ep count animes do today, it's just they are called 'Filler' eps. Naruto is loaded with it. It's how the money is made folks, more eps - more ad time - higher ratings. Sadly more often then not, this leads to a story getting very played out (Ranma 1/2 was a prime victim of this, seven seasons was not needed)

  • It looks nice I'll give it that, I feel bad for the voice actors having to do the same dialoge for how many games, unless they reuse the sound effects from the previous games?

DBZ needs to go out for pastures new, Bleach & Naruto should be getting these sorta games now.
