When the Stargate SG-1 based MMORPG Stargate Worlds was first announced from Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, I had my doubts it would ever even reach the beta stage, yet here we are. The newly-formed publisher FireSky has announced that registrations for the closed beta of Stargate Worlds is now officially open. Hopeful players can head over to their website at www.StargateWorlds.com, register for an account, and have their name thrown into a giant hat from which beta testers will be chosen. They aren't asking for tech specs, so I can only assume the selection process is to be random, or perhaps by which names they like the best. Testers will be the first to enter the Stargate, and perhaps the first MMO players to utter the phrase, "Draw their fire while I complete this mini-game." My only question is can I be the James Spader Daniel Jackson, or am I going to be shoehorned into the Michael Shanks portrayal? This sort of thing keeps me up at night.
Stargate Worlds Closed Beta Registration Now OpenMESA, Ariz. - April 24, 2008 - Stargate Worlds, the massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) from new publisher FireSky, is now taking registrations for closed beta at www.StargateWorlds.com .
The closed beta is an invitation-only test of the upcoming science fiction MMORPG Stargate Worlds. Invitations will be sent out this spring and summer as the Stargate Worlds team ramps up the numbers for testing.
The select group of beta testers will provide feedback to the development team about their game experience while also providing vital insight into the performance of the servers. The closed beta will begin with a small core of gamers and gradually expand as more functionality is added. Beta testers will experience Stargate Worlds alongside the developers who also will be playing the game.
"A game is nothing without players. We're fired up to finally get our game in the hands of the community," said Dan Elggren, Stargate Worlds studio head. "We're at the point where we need external testers to take Stargate Worlds to the finish line. Our devoted fans have helped guide us for more than two years through our forums. Together, we're going to craft a balanced, polished, and most of all, fun game."
Testers will be the first to step through the Stargate for a super-sized sci-fi adventure that will send gamers around a galaxy dipped in liquid awesome. Discover thriving alien worlds, explore ancient civilizations. and tell them all the things they are doing wrong. Smack a clip into your assault rifle and enter Stargate Worlds.
Beta testers will:

So... There really IS an archeologist class, I guess?
I got a email from them last week about Beta testing this game. I might have to check it out.Love me some Stargate.
Indeed Daniel Jackson... INDEED!
I might give this a shot, depending on how busy I'll be next semester.
Sweet, I'm going to head over and sign up. Stargate SG-1 was one of my favorite programs...well, at least while O'Neill was on the show and they were going agasint the Goa'uld. After he left and the enemy changed, turned kind of meh.
I didn't have to think about it, I signed up right away ... this is the first MMORPG I've been excited about in awhile.
Doesn't mean it will be good, but I'm really hoping it is. The great thing about Stargate is that all of the character archtypes are useful and loved -- I mean, people want to be the badass military dude ... but, people also want to be the archaeologist or the scientist -- the show managed to make them all equal. I love that.
Teal'c = manly.
That is all.
If I were going to ever try out an MMO, it would be a Stargate MMO. Unfortunately, my PC can't handle solitaire, so no hanging out with Teal'c for me. :(
By which names they like best? My name sucks (Chris Brown). Screw it, I don't want to be in your cool kids club with your Crecente's and Kenji's and Mini-Bash's
@DrowningInMercy: Well, I mean when he was acting as a Colonel, not General. Oh, and against*
Gimme a P90 and im good to go... anywhere.
(Please, don't mess this one up... please, pease, please!)
its got a lot of potetnial however I am not sure it hasn't been in development for a long time and its supposed to come out soon which makes me think it might be rushed.
@code.monkey:
I joined their forums last year some time and they sent me a invite.I wish I knew if my comp could take it though.Probably not :(
Thanks for the heads up! I went straight there to get my name in.
This began almost 2 weeks ago :p
the only other MMO I have played is WoW, and I don't care for it. I love the Stargate universe, and I signed up for the beta as soon as I heard about it.
Here is to hoping this is a good MMO.
Oh yes... I am horribly tired of the 'sword and sorcerors' medieval time period crap that gets churned out again and again in the MMO world. And Stargate is a PERFECT opportunity for a game creator to do absolutely ANYTHING with the game. You walk through the gate and BAM you're in an entirely different world.
This could be very, very cool and though I don't play any MMOs for fear of their addictive drain, I will certainly try this one with enthusiasm.
Ooo, I am so interested!
Recently got the entire season on DVD and it's so good! Just finished Season 4 yesterday and tonight we will start on Season 5 when the DH comes home. (So please don't spoil anything.. please!)
I hope we get into the beta, can't wait to try it out! =)
@KirbySS: Teal'c was more manly when he was bald and had the gold goatee
I think I got signed up. When it said "Click this box to sign up", I did, but nothing happened. I then clicked it a dozen or so more times, and the other boxes too (to see if anything would check), before pressing submit. Hopefully I didn't screw it up/sign up for a bunch of newsletters.
Just created an account, but there doesn't seem to be any other way to opt into the beta...
Spader sux... Shanks all the way!
I'll remember Spader more for Alan Shore than Daniel Jackson.
I would rather be the shanks jackson then spader one
Signed up twice.
@Spideys-Web: Yuo people are all communists.
This is the first MMO i will give it a shot...
okay, i'm gonna give it a shot.. i'm a huge stargate fan.
@Naia:
Not only did the wife and I just purchase the entire series on DVD, but we just finished the exact same season as you and planned on starting season 5 off tonight as well. In fact, my first thought when I read your post was: Since when does my wife post on Kotaku?
As far as the MMO, I've been eagerly anticipating this one for some time and signed up for a chance at beta testing it too. There was a short preview of the game on the recent Stargate DVD movie "Ark of Truth". Looked very intriguing.
Love the series!
Got the beta sign up invite a week or so ago.
Should be interesting!
P.S. Shanks Jackson FTW!
im singin' up for this bee-yatch.
that is all.
I own every single episode on DVD, and the movie, + atlantis... Yeah, I'm kind of a fan.
I had DREAMS about a Stargate MMO back in when season 4 of SG1 was still on.
This is a dream come true. Literally. I'm gonna go watch the show again, start to finish, till I can play this.
Ditto on shanks FTW
Just signed up
Count another one for Shanks over spader, never found that online petition to bring him back on the show, but I was glad none the less when he returned because of it. Either way I want to be Chris Judge, he is a funny ass mofo.
I so hope this game is good...I would buy it though if there was a single offscreen 'indeed' from chris judge, damn I love teal'c!
Shanks > Spader
