Crossover time! Characters Vyse and Aika from SEGA RPG Skies of Arcadia appear in Sega's new PS3 title Senjo no Valkyuria (Valkyria Chronicles). Makes sense with Sega rumored to be working on a Skies of Arcadia. Right up there is proof of Vyse's in game appearance, and Aika is after the jump. Click over if you like. If not, don't. YOUR CHOICE.
Thanks 108 for the tip!

Brian: Good to see you are pro-choice on Kotaku :)
Oh man that's awesome. Makes me wish this game is coming to the 360 eventually. And a next-gen Skies of Arcadia would be full of awesome sauce.
Dying for this game~!
Go vote for the collectors edition of Little Big planet at ipetition.com
VC's graphical style seems to suite them nicely.
@Connoisseur: Stop spamming that crap.
Nnnnnnng.
Wantwantwant.
I...think that about covers it - for Valkyria /and/ a new SoA.
I loves me some Dreamcast. A new Skies of Arcadia would be sweet, but a new Jet Set Radio would be sublime.
weird...it still says 0 views on this link...
As the person credited with the tip for this story, I profess that this game is actually quite amazingly great.
I'd suspected that it, you know, wouldn't suck, precisely. Though after playing it -- wow! It's really good!
I hope it causes a Final Fantasy Tactics-style shake-up in the "Japanese strategy RPG" genre, because its formula (which combines the best elements of JRPG battles, dungeons, and exploration segments into one streamlined experience) could use hella tweaking and variation for Maximum Enjoy.
Also know that if a character dies in battle, they never come back.
I am proud to say I've kept Vyse and Aika alive for the first thirty hours of play.
Also, Vyse and Aika are officially "friends" in this game, so if they're relatively close to one another on the battlefield, they get invisible stat boosts.
Awesome stuff.
@Connoisseur: It does not dynamically update, it updates after a period of time.
As usual, my opion is exactly the same as Achenar's...
Wantwantwant. >_>
do.want.
Seriously, I'll probably find more and more difficult in the following months NOT to buy a PS3, between this, MGS4 and several other things.
But I already own a 360 and I really don't want to buy a PS3 without getting a HDTV first >_>
YAY for cameos. that's all I got to say.
i'm hoping for some phantasy star cameos, too :-3
it's worth saying that characters come in, like, five basic classes (reconnaissance, infantry, anti-tank, support (healing / engineering), sniper), and that all your troops level up together when you apply experience points after a battle, and that you're free to draft as many dudes at a time as you want, so your only incentive for keeping any particular soldier alive is -- well, if you like them. as a person. or if you like their character design / face / voice.
really nifty dynamic.
As a true-blue Skies fan, it warms my heart to see that Sega hasn't forgotten about its Dreamcast classic. SoA was a wonderful game that really made its sense of exploration and adventure feel fun, and Vyse and Aika's appearance here can only portend good things for the series' future.
Also, the more I hear about Valkyria Chronicles, the more I'm interested in playing it. More serious-contender RPGs are exactly what today's consoles need in order to take the languishing torch from the PS2 and the handhelds...which are still the main place to be for RPGs, all things considered.
Also, are those Vyse and Aika's canonical last names, or are they just tacked-on for the sake of their appearance in VC?
i never owned Dreamcast but i'm from all the word of mouth reviews, i would like to play Skies of Arcadia on current consoles...
@Kikujiro: Cool username, man. I love that movie.
Yeah, I'd go for the HDTV first since it will improve all of your future gaming.
@108: Dang, characters dying for good seems nice but in reality it just results in a bunch of reloading save files whenever things go sour...
Sweet news.
I love Skies of Arcadia and have had this game on my radar for a while. This is just another reason to watch out for it when it is released.
MUST OWN
I really hope they make another Skies of Arcadia. That game is one of my favorites.
A new Skies Of Arcadia? Oh, yes, please!!! One of my favourite games and best experiences on the Dreamcast. I don't get easily excited by rumours, but this one would have me jumping up and down if, you know, I wasn't too cool to jump up and down.
Still no word on the Western release of Valkyria Chronicles, is there? I'm awaiting it almost as eagerly as MGS4. Like tenken said, we need more RPGs on current consoles. Mass Effect and Lost Odyssey are the only ones IMO that can stand up to (and in some ways surpass) the staples of the genre that came out on older consoles. I need my RPG fix! Hell, I'm one GTAIV away from replaying FFVII...
@108: Dying is final, and there are invisible battlefield support stats?
Sounds like they're taking a tip from Fire Emblem :3 Not that I'm complaining, of course! ^-^
Still need to finish Skies of Arcadia...
A new Skies of Arcadia would make me one of the happiest gamers in the world.
Wow, talk about coming out from left field.
That's really, really cool. If a new Skies is in the works, I'll be one of the first in line to get it.
hahaha, not sure if you guys pay attention to the picture itself,
it said that Aika have "Allergy"
Well they officially die if you dont get to their bodies in time or if the enemy touches the corpse before you can get to it.
If not they go into a wounded state for 3 turns I think it was.
@icepick314: You can play Skies of Arcadia on the Wii via backwards compatibility.
My interest in this title just skyrocketed from 0 to 100!!!! I loved SoA!!!!!!
aww... it's good to see them again
Still, if I wasn't drooling over the game before, I sure as heck am now!
@Witzbold: Mmmm want this game now... Too many good ps3 games coming out this year, I'm going to be bankrupt of time to play them all.
I'm already getting angry that with GTA4 I dont have time for MGO beta.
I was just wondering the other day what ever happened with that rumor (quartermann was it?) that there was a new Skies of Arcadia title in the works. This is awesome to see!
Oh and Sega, c'mon, bring this game to the 360 - don't be a dick. We're starving for tactical RPGs, to the point where people are trying to convince themselves that Operation Darkness isn't that bad.
A word of warning though LOTS OF GRINDING to get to a reasonable level so the game isnt as stressful. Since its actually rather difficult if you try to casually play through it.
Asides from that its an enjoyable game with EXCELLENT graphics.
PIRATES WRAAAAATH!!!!
LAMBDA BURST!!
Ah man great times to be had when that game came out. I spent hours on my Dreamcast playing the hell out of that game. Loved every minute of it, cant wait for a part 2.
I also hope for my cameos since Sega is definitely rich in popular franchises and very poor at picking out where they should pop up again *cough Tennis cough*.
But the Fire Emblem permanent death thing has me worried. I always get really anxious about making sure no one ever dies in games like this which usually wind up with me losing my patience with the game... Still, it has my interest, even more now.
Damn you Sega for adding yet another game to the list of games tempting me to get a PS3.
If they make a brand NEW SKies of Arcadia game for the PS3 then I will have no choice but to shell out the money for it.
T_T I want to get this game so badly, but I have no time for console games... *looks over at SSBB and other Wii games*
O_O
Wow, if I didn't already want this game, now it's a must buy.
Omg, too much Dreamcast on the front page today. The memories are getting me too nostalgic.
VYSE!!! Skies of Arcadia is in my top 2 favorite RPG's of all time!
Wait, what?!
Sega's working on another Skies?!
Oh dear, my heart's all aflutter. Please let this not be another unfounded rumor.
@Witzbold:
Yeah, if you touch their body within three turns, you can send them back to the barracks, and can even resurrect them from a base after two turns have passed.
If not -- they're dead forever!
@Witzbold: "A word of warning though LOTS OF GRINDING to get to a reasonable level "
Actually, I didn't "grind" at all! Just played straight through the whole game using my brilliant tactics!
I'm pretty sure I'm about two or three battles from the end. The story is getting all . . . . . . . end-gamey.
Haven't lost a single dude!
My personal motto has always been "EVERYBODY GETS OUT ALIVE."
The map design is clever as hell for every single map. There's always one or two gimmicks that you can use -- which you might not even see your first run through -- to tumble the whole thing over in your favor. You get to a certain point where your experience level doesn't mean much as long as you Fight Brilliantly.
Really, really, really hot game!
Also, the music is by Hitoshi "Final Fantasy Tactics" Sakimoto.
f'n awesome
YES! If Sega still acknowleges Skies of Arcadia, that means a sequel is inevitable right?
This is a long wait for september.
A really long wait.
Ohhh that's awesome. I loved Skies of Arcadia.
Sega is goign to make me buy a PS3 at this rate.
@108: Well its more about seeing where you can take advantage of the AI.
Since jesus is your accuracy terrible if you dont level up. Along with how much AP you have to run around the map. Which makes a huge diff if you want to beat stages faster and get a better rating.
Also higher levels means more skills to make the fights easier plus when you rank up at lv 11 some of the extra gear with certian classes helps a lot.
I don't own a PS3 so I would love a 360 port of this game.
But more importantly, please bring Skies of Arcadia back, that game was a great time.
@Witzbold: Well, I don't mean I never leveled up -- just that I didn't ever fight the "optional" "skirmish" battles. I just used the experience points earned during the battles.
The battles themselves are great, though, so it never felt like "grinding" for me.
And "taking advantage of the AI" -- that's what we call WAR, man. (Except in Real War, it's taking advantage of the "RI".)
. . . I mean. It feels more than natural enough. I would love to see them (or someone else!) make another game in this style. It' so nice :(
Really fun game! Kind of don't want it to end.
It's like Final Fantasy XII with interesting environment design and a strategy game flow.
Here's hoping for a Skies of Arcadia sequel.
As for Valkyria Chronicles, I might just buy a PS3 for it.
That's very pleasing. I loved Skies and I'm looking forward to this too.
Ahhhh just the sight of Vyse and Aika makes me want to play Skies of Arcadia again. Freakin love that game. My 3rd favorite RPG of all time.
Cannot wait for the sequel. They better not ruin it!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can't say I'm not sold on it, but cameos are nice. More importantly, but damn I've been longing for Skies of Arcadia sequel... way to have a man jones about something Sega, bravo!
Damn, damn, damn. Why did this have to go PS3 only? I wanted the game before this, now I want it more. I guess I'll have to definatly save up for a PS3 rather than eventually save up for one.
Skies is a wonderful game, and a new version for the current machines would be welcome. Valkria as a spiritual successor makes me instantly interested in this game. T
he only annoying thing about the original Skies was the insane amount of random encounters. Sometimes you couldn't count to three between battles! Hell, the game even gives you an item that wards off random encounters! Cool thing was that, on the Dreamcast, you always knew when a random encounter in Skies was about to happen. You would always hear a small "skree" sound from the console right before the encounter screen popped up. It was fun, like knowing the future or something.
I want this game even more now. Skies was one of my favorite RPGs. Valkyria chronicles is looking to be up there too.
This looks intersting, though a new Skies would be more interesing.
@Odin: You said what I was going to say.
YES!!!! Someone at Sega actually remember this game existed!
Possibility of new Skies game +2000
@icepick314: Skies of Arcadia Legends is on the Game Cube. Find that and play it on the Wii if you have one...
Is it weird that this is the game that makes me really want to buy a PS3?
