Even if your particular copy of Grand Theft Auto IV doesn't lock up your PlayStation 3, you may still find it a challenge to experience the online component of the game. Crecente posted earlier today that he was having connection issues, but he's not the only one. We've heard from a number of tipsters that they've been unable to connect to the Gamespy hosted servers, with a quick peek at popular online forums reflecting similar complaints.
We've already contacted SCEA who tells us that they're aware of the issue and "looking into it." We haven't been able to get through to Rockstar support via telephone, but continue to try. We're awaiting response from their public relations team and will update when we hear more. In the meantime, PS3 owners who are experiencing connection issues with GTA IV should let us know in the comments.

Heh.
Well, Since im the only one in America that doesnt have a copy for PS3, im not worrying about it too much. Hopefully they have it working by the time I pick up my copy in two weeks. :D
I actually thought i would have problems connecting and initially it wouldnt connect but after 2 or 3 tries it worked flawlessly. In fact tahts the first thing i did when i got the game.
Play the singleplayer till they get it sorted if you need something to do! To be honest, there's probably more players accessing PSN now than ever before; it'll take a few days to iron out the kinks. :)
I'm kinda glad I didn't buy it now. Going to wait a month or two. I'm sure it'll be fixed by then!
i see what you did here -_-
I played earlier today with people... wouldn't find any quick games after trying for ages, so it eventually made me host one. About 3 people joined. So it is working, just pretty lamely. Also what's with not being able to select to join a friends game? They have to invite you? :/
i'm still waiting for the damn UPS truck to show up with my copy.
Glad i went with the 360 version.
I own both systems tho, I mostly went with 360 for the DLC.
Even if your an editor on Kotaku, you'd think you'd know the difference between "you're" and "your"!
@Rovient:
Why should we have to settle for playing single player only when LIVE is working just fine and all the 360 owners can play right now? Seriously, Sony touts the PSN as a great experience online, but this shit crops up and people justify it/make excuses. Cut. It. Out. They should have seen this coming a mile away, and apparently they didn't do anything about it.
WORKS LIKE A CHARM :).
Am I the only one too busy with with single-player to care so early?
@stupidfanboy:
Yes because LIVE works perfectly all the time. This has been a terrible year for Live
that really sucks... I hope Sony has experience in recovering from these sorta issues if it is indeed Sony's issue. It could very well be a R* issue.
Mine is saying "Cannot connect to game provider, please try again later."
I have been playing story, but would like to try multiplayer.
Yep, mine's been down all day.
Can't link my PSN ID to the Social Club, either. I'm assuming it's all connected.
I had a couple of games last night ran well, I'm still going through the story mode
Let me tell you, I'm losing sleep about this...
Not really, I'm doing the story mode.
I haven't played in MP but I noticed while getting a lap dance (can't get enough!) PSN booted me off twice. I checked my router logs and my downloads on the PC never stopped. No idea what that's about.
Gamespy servers always suck...what else is new?
@Benjamin Linus: Yeah I got both systems also. My friends all have 360s so, I went with that one.
@LittleBigPlaneteer: Just look at his screenname. He probably just bought his 360 or his memory span is too short to remember last Christmas.
It worked for me earlier when I managed to pry myself away from the single player..
But saying that there were barely any people playing, and half way through one of the games everybody disapeared and I was stood on happiness island on my own. I ended up just saying "fuck it" and went back to single player
And that's why I dun have GTA4
Anyone know if the Social Club is working?
@MarshmallowMark:
"Even if YOUR an editor on Kotaku, you'd think you'd know the difference between "you're" and "your"!"
I hope you did that on purpose...
It's not Sony's problem at the moment. PSN is working perfectly. GTA just won't connect online. I haven't been able to play online GTA yet, so count me in the list.
@MCWHAMMER:
It's Rockstar's issue I'm assuming since PSN works and other MP games work
YES, I HAVE NEW AMMO FOR /v/
@gogee: No I didn't. Please elaborate.
I mean, the biggest game to hit the PS3 so far, and Sony didnt see this coming?
MS got shit last christmas for not being prepered, now Its Sony's turn
my multiplayer let me into the menus to select a game to join a few hours after my launch(Alaska, the last people in the world to get it on this particular launch date). This morning, however I can't connect to the servers. Oh well. I'll just wait it out. the single player is amazing.
@stupidfanboy: You don't have to settle for playing single player only, but just be patient. The game is just out and everyone is probably hammering the servers trying to get online. The single player is 100 hours long, so why wouldn't you want to enjoy that before checking out the online bonus? Who cares what 360 owners do or don't do?
yup im getting random freezing and unable to connect online. SUPER! lol hope it gets fixed soon i wanna continue with the story!
Suddenly that $50 a year I've been wasting on Live doesn't seem like such a waste. Let's just keep those hiccups to a minimum MS and I'll keep making with the green.
@slomo788:
Uh, I've had my 360 for 2 years now. And my PS3 for about 6 months. Live is so far ahead of PSN it's disgusting. And the downtime hasn't actually been that bad for Live, regardless of how many people blow it out of proportion. Both systems are great, but there's no in hell I'd ever say that PSN is anywhere close to Live at this point. My point was that people are willing to base Live constantly, but make excuses for PSN - which is retarded.
*bash Live constantly...
No Problems here not even the frozen opening 60Gigger here.
@stupidfanboy: Like I said previously, PSN is not down. Check your facts kid. Rockstar is letting PS3 owners down at the moment.
@stupidfanboy:
you comparing a paid service with a free service..
@stupidfanboy:
People hardly make excuses for PSN. This is not Sony's issue though, this is Rockstar's issue. Since you have a PS3 go and play another game online. It will work. If it was PSN wouldn't the whole system be down?
Mine is working fine.
@stranger: Live should be fine. There were problems around Christmas with the huge influx of online users but everything seems to be hammered out since then.
@LittleBigPlaneteer: The problem technically lies with Gamespy, but if Sony provided matchmaking servers and a unified online atmosphere instead of making third parties host their own servers, it could be working on the PS3 right now.
@stupidfanboy:
stupidfanboy your a stupidfanboy yourself regardless that you have both systems.
@Ultima08: Really? Mario Kart Wii works fine for me as to plenty of other games using GameSpy middleware & servers.
I've got the 360 version, but a coworker and 2 of his roomies got the PS3 version and can't get online.
@idrisz:
Which I understand. But if you're going to make excuses like that, then people aren't going to expect a quality experience from it.
Plus, even the free (silver) version of Live is pretty darned good. Huge selection of demos, access to all the media and downloads. The only thing you don't get from it is the online play. But considering the demo and media selection is superior to PSN, I'd say even the free version of Live is better than PSN.
@stupidfanboy: I've had my 360 4 months and my ps3 a year and i have to say your blowing the differences out of proportion. The only thing live has better is sending messages in game. THAT'S IT. That's what you pay for. I play warhawk online just fine but i can no longer see a reason to pay for xbox live.
Warhawk, Lost Planet, CoD4, and Gt5 work fine for me online. People like you need to just go away and stop lieing about owning both consoles.
@Niko23:
Not really, I just notice better quality of one online service compared to another. Sorry if that offends you.
@NessD12: I agree with most of your post, however, I wouldn't use GT5 as an example of a quality online experience. No voice chat and only random matches is pretty much like playing bot battles. Warhawk on the other hand is pretty incredible.
@stupidfanboy: ONE PS3 game does not work online for SOME people. The game in question is the most anticipated game this year and came out TODAY.
Live didn't work for months, and not only for one game, but for ALL games.
Live has one advantage over PSN: cross-game invites. PSN is free, open (UT3 mods), it's not a pain in the ass for devs and has been proven to be a robust service (32/40/60 players, 8 player co-op). I love how some people get into that stupid misconception that if something is free, it must be shit.
@MarshmallowMark: Wow, what an incredably ironic statement. One would think that if you were going to call someone out for a grammatical mistake, you would bother to get it right YOUR self.
Let me fix YOUR statement for you. Instead of this:
"Even if your an editor on Kotaku, you'd think you'd know the difference between "you're" and "your"!"
It should be this:
"Since you are an editor at Kotaku, one would think that you would know the differnce between "you're" and "your". "
If you are going to be an asshat about grammar, then you should at least get it right. Next time make sure YOUR prescription helmet is securely fastened before trying that again.
I haven't tried yet -- I'm just glad I got my first two hours in without a freeze on my 60GB which I guess are the ones having issues. Just played single player -- is it my rustyness, my suckiness or is it just a little bit harder that past iterations?
Why would it be Rockstars fault when Gamespy and Sony is suppose to be running the online.
I do plan on buying a PS3 in the future(most likely far future) when there is a more variety of exclusive games that draw me in. I will play it online too, but no matter what anybody says Live is way ahead of PSN just because MS nows online alot better than Sony because of PC gaming and the 5 year advantage.
I do feel sorry for the PS3 owners that can't play online. Hell if I had the issue too I would be pissed. Hopefully it gets fixed for you so you can experience the whole game like it should be.
@Mr.SithNinja: Lol I want to believe that he did it on purpose.
the Speling and gramer in these coments is terible
I'm having trouble connecting. When I select multiplayer on my phone, it just thinks for a while and then says try again later. Also having trouble linking my PSN ID.
@stupidfanboy:
You're right, regardless of what all these other "fanboys" are saying. Sony did have plenty of time to foresee this, free or not.
This sounds familar, happend around christmas : O both with the native resolutions and the down severs, i just lol how there is an excuse for this but not for xbox, or now it doesnt matter, for the resolution it didn't matter either times and if they get this sorted out it wont matter for either, im just gunna say HEY DONT GO FLAMING COMPANYS AND SHIT IF YOUR GUNNA STICK UP FOR ANOUTHER ONE THE NEXT DAY CUZ THEY DID THE EXACT SAME THING :3
@slomo788: "Live didn't work for months, and not only
