During my marathon session with Grand Theft Auto IV earlier this month I played through the game on an Xbox 360, then switched over to the PS3. I couldn't notice much of a difference visually. The 360 seemed to have a bit more pop-in, but also seemed a tad cleaner looking, but I only noticed the latter by going back and forth between the TVs, which were set up side-by-side. Really, I didn't see anything of huge note. Now you can see for yourself how they compare.

That is all!
This video will break the internets in craggy halves!!
Is the video not working for anyone else?
not working link it please.
Not working for me either
Yeah, just a black box is showing for me I'm afraid.
Maybe it's a video of the game freezing?
@Cyborgmatt:
Yep me. I can only see a black screen.
Yeah it is busted.
lol this is what its like when you play GTA, the blank sreen of freeze.
good one kotaku.
lol
black box here
It looks like the whole gamevideos site is down at the moment.
It's not a black box it's a gateway to oblivion....

Here's a video over in a Gametrailers Forum thread that has a comparison. Looks pretty similiar.
Here are the downloads

I dunno... I think the black screen is a bit crisper on the 360.
@Zaxxon Q Blaque: I second that.
Nice video..... I just seen a black screen without sound....
that's GTAIV??? I'm dissapointed....
@Cruithne:
/chuckle.
The internet is broken! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!
@Zaxxon Q Blaque: i would have to agree
Not that it matters, I doubt I'll play this on my PS3 and think I wish I was playing the 360 version
Busted videos for the win...
@Zaxxon Q Blaque: LOL
Gamevideos.com is also effin' up. Maybe the problems are one in the same? Meh, back to studying for my 9:30am midterm =[
nope cant see it,i was going to blame the ps3 browser i have had to use for the last few days until i saw everyone else comments
Huh, it looks like the Gamevideos site crashed. I've emailed them while I search for a similar vid. This one split the screen down the middle, so it was a really good comparison.
The entire 1up network is down. I swear they need better servers and more bandwidth.
Thanks for the download link.
It'd have been nice if they hid the system names until the very end, so that you could remove any potential bias while watching the comparison. The names are shown at the top right and left corners throughout the vid, so I guess you can obscure your screen with something if you want to make a blind comparison.
Picture quality looks identical, but colors are a slightly more intense on one side compared to the other, particularly with the reds. However, I'd be surprised if this difference wasn't due to configuration on the reviewer's setup. With the shot of the bed, I can't tell any difference at all.
If it's the Gamersyde video - wouldn't it have made more sense to make a video that doesn't just consist of a cutscene?
I guess the Black box is denoting the fact soon it will be redundant to make comparison videos.
At least shades of black are the same on both platforms :P
@El-Suave:
Yes it would be nice to see some gameplay comparison.
Hehehe doesnt matter wich version you play all you get is a black screen! :P
Downlaoded the video. For once, the PS3 version has higher contrast, Niko's skin looks very red in the PS3 version. In the 360 version, the color's saturated and washed out, but just slightly though. Usually it's the other way around, sure the video is not mislabeled? or PS3 games are starting to look better for real?
If you struggle to see a difference between the versions on a pair of HD TVs; I'd be shocked if the difference showed at all on a flash-compressed video.
@beoba:
Agreed. They look pretty much identical. However, as with all these 'comparisons' they are essentially useless. Until they record the video as a direct feed and leave it at the resolution it was output at it is irrelevant. Resizing anything will smooth edges and make textures look far better than they really are.
It's totally pointless to stream it anyway. Once you condense the HD visuals into a 300x300 pixel box both are going to look exactly the bloody same.
The PS3 version looks and plays better, I can't believe the shit they come out with.
Just a Bullshit comparison tbh
@rich8606: you can change contrast and saturation in the games video options so thats kind of a moot point.
@HarshCargo: Have you played both? 360 version has a slightly more stable frame rate and ps3 has less pop in...but pop in on the 360 version isnt an issue unless you are really looking for it.
all i see is that the 360 needs to have its colors tweaked to be more "warm" - 2 second change on a tv..
can't wait til all the ps3 fan boys are crying this summer when the 360 exclusive content drops.. anyone who isn't considering that the #1 factor is setting themselves up for fail. but hey, at least you got a blue ray player.
It looks almost the same, maybe PS3 has warmer colors...
@dazinith:
ok fanboy..don't come crying to us when you have to send in your busted ass console for the umpteenth time also.
@Zaxxon Q Blaque: yea but you're forgetting the black screen loads faster on the PS3
@rich8606: Im pretty sure those videos are correctly labelled, since the PS3 side has slightly better anti-aliasing as well. Which from what I've read in reviews has been one of its advantages. Besides that I can only see the PS3 colors as warmer, which has been stated already that a quick change in the TV settings can fix. Either way both versions looks awesome.
@dazinith: I think I'm gonna get the PS3 version once I get a PS3 later this summer. Unless the downloadable content is so mindboggling that it convinces me to get it for the 360. I have yet to fully explore a GTA title before putting it away... so I'm not that hyped for DLC to it right now. But I won't buy either version until I know what it is.
I'm liking the ps3 version more,only due to the colours which can be altered on the tv as suggested many times before.
@The Whaleman: I'll be getting the PS3 version as well, I"ll get it later though. In June along with MGS4. no rush... Not really a big fan of GTA or online gaming for that matter, so I couldn't care about the downloadable content.
@parad0x360:
Funny how it wasn't a moot point when PS3 games were affected :/
Ah, Gamevideos' crappy server crashed again... 1Up is down too. Dear Ziff Davis execs, please call your colleagues at Gametrailers or IGN and let them explain you how to host a website!
The PS3 has the edge here it seems. The colors simply look more realistic, especially the skin tones. Some Rockstar developers have come out to say they personally prefer the PS3 version, the way it renders GTAIV and so on.
The question of the skin tones is actually interesting. Since Niko is Eastern European, would he actually have tanner skin? I would think he might be paler. In any event the PS3 does come out looking slightly (and I do stress slight) less jaggy than the 360 version. Colors you can play with both in game and on screen ad infinitum.
@Brian Crecente: OOOOH :o Crecente broke the internets!
@Brian Crecente: That guy broke Kotaku! Get him!
@The Whaleman:
From what I understand (or, er, what various news stories and forums speculate), the Ps3 uses a lower native resolution than the 360 (630p equivalent), but with slightly more added post-processing and aliasing.
@logikil: Russians are surely paler. Unless they're well sunned.
Bit of a 'meh' really.
IMHO from the screenies it looks to me like the ps3 is indeed 'warmer' which is not to my tastes. don't know about you lot - but you only get orange skinned people here after a Boots 2for1 offer.
they should have just not labeled which side is which and make you guess you till the end....
GFX are nearly identical, controls are mostly to user preference, pop-in exists in both ( somewhat less in ps3), so the only issue left would be multiplay.
I'm thinking 360 will win on that front.
I really don't see much of a difference. Just looks like color differences, in which case you can modify by changing hue/saturation/contrast on your TV.
IMO these comparison things are much ado about nothing, but I know they're popular so they must be done.
wow. Looks almost exactly the same to me. Anyone who 'sees' any real difference is just being a raving fanboy.
Video's up.
Heh, now I remember why the PC community stopped using comparision videos in ATI vs Nvidia showdowns. Both run essentially the same and the only problem that anyone cared about was driver bugs.
Next generation, Sony and Microsoft's machines will be so similar that overzealous Internet denizens will be forced to compare individual pixels on the screen:
"LOOK! The 58th pixel from the left on the fifth scanline is a deeper shade of fuchsia on the PS4 than on the Xbox Zeitgeist! Superiority! Excelsior!"
thats interesting. based on the video, the ps3 one appears a tad more saturated over the 360. usually comparison videos show the opposite.
both look great, the hardware just render 'em slightly differently. not enough for one to look better then the other. and definitely not enough for one to play better then the other i'm sure.
now i just need to get a ps360 to play it.
Half the time, I was like - "No difference". A couple times, like the blue skies, I liked the PS3 version. A couple of the indoor shots, I liked the 360 version.
They both look fine.
