Web clearance joint OverStock Dealz are, *ahem*, overstocked with 360 HD-DVD drives. You're no doubt aware why. So they're offloading them for the ridiculous price of $30 a pop. I only post this because, well, $30 is a steal, and with HD-DVD movies also at rock-bottom prices there are worse ways to blow a rainy weekend than stocking up on obsolete high-definition movie discs and indulging in the shiny future that never was.

Yea a steal for them maybe.
pretty soon all xbox owners will be receiving a free hd-dvd drive in the mail.
that or microsoft gives them to 3rd world countries as scrap metal.
I still kick myself for buying the hd, sad thing is I paid full price for it, and about a month later thats when blu-ray was picking up, and slowly deafting hd.
Why can't we all just get along.
Its worth the $30 since it comes with the remote which costs $30 to begin with.
Not bad. A nice offer.
ill definatley bookmark this, and if its still like this when the stimulus checks come in, ill be lookin to picking one up.
thanks
I'm pretty sure hd-dvd drives will be the gaming disc in the next xbox just seeing as how terribly slow blu-ray is. and sony owns the rights to it basically.
i saw it for 20 bucks over at fye mucic and movies.
I had to laugh at the "limit 12 per customer".
Looking at the picture I think we have found the most smug man on the planet!!! I wonder if microsoft are so smug about it now? Maybe Mr. M just got one for $30 perhaps he is still smug. I know i'm not I spent £129.99 on mine. I cry myself to sleep every night.
That would replace my Betamax weekend.
I'd buy one for that price, keep it all boxed up and in years to come, it may be worth $100 again :P
I'd buy one. Who cares if it's obsolete. So is the Genesis and I still have one of those. So is the SNES and I still have one of those. So is the TurboGrafx-16 and I still have one of those...
A collector doesn't care.
"Condition: Like New, in Original Packaging."
So...these aren't new?
Do the come w/ the remote, and King Kong?
@deathtastic: The current blu-ray drive in the PS3 is just a slow drive - it's only 2x. Presumably, in later manufacturing runs they could just put in a faster drive after they've been developed?
Anyway, the HD-DVD drive addon might actually be slow as well. Seeing as it only plays movies, it has no reason to read above 1x, which would be slower that a blu-ray drive doing 2x. Couldn't find out how fast it actually is though.
In the grander scheme of things, this will end up in some corner of a retro game shop selling at an unreasonable price for those who want to complete their collection in about 20 years.
If you have a pile of HD DVDs you can rip them onto a computer with one of these things.
So what if the stock dump prices push HD-DVDs and their drives into a space where they are competitive? lol, I know I know but it would be funny.
In Germany they're having a 360 fire sale on Amazon.
You get GTA, 3 months live and the HD DVD player ALL FOR FREE with your console
[amazon.de]
I'll take one.
@Jamaces: Same here man. Only thing is, I only have 4 HD-DVDs, and I don't know whether I should just get whatever HD-DVDs I want while theyre cheap, or just rebuy the 4 as regular DVDs and forget I ever bought the thing...
Wishing I had more money at this point in time. I would totally buy all these discounted hd movies :\
If anyone has a good HDTV, and ISN'T watching anything in either HDDVD/Bluray, you're missing out, and should pick one of these up, then grab some cheapo movies, and have fun.
The players still play, the movies still work, and they still look amazing.
The remote is worth $30 alone! I still use the HD DVD drive and there are still a bunch of good movies on the format. Yeah its a lame duck, but the movies still look great.
Strip out the laser diode from the hd drive and you can build one of those blue laser pointers.
So where are these rock-bottom HDDVDs ? And what counts as rock-bottom pricing ?
I'd definitely buy a stack of HDDVDs if I could find them under say $15.
Thx
I just picked up Anchorman for $12, all 3 Ocean's movies for $32, and Brokeback Mountain for $14 on HD-DVD. Amazon also has a bunch in the $16-17 range right now, with them ocassionally going on sale for a few bucks less. I have a bunch in my cart that I watch the prices on.
This is awesome. I'll need to get one. HD-DVD players upscale regular DVDs, don't they? So why not get this thing and use it as your regular player?
$30 for an upconvert player is a steal.
just got a reply from their customer service:
"It comes with the remote but, not king kong. Thank you."
@GusherKid: Yeah, HD DVD players do upconvert, but not the 360 HD DVD drive. All this does is read the raw data off a disc and then it sends it to the console for processing. So the 360 console does the upconverting and if you are using HDMI you can just simply use the built-in main DVD drive.
I might get this just for I am Legend and The Fast and the Furious
the 360 itself upconverts actually its considered one of the best upconverting dvd players due to the HANA chip many people on AVSforum have discussed it in the past.
This is an awesome deal... 30$ for the player and it works on your pc (with windvdhd) and 360 ... and discs are on sale for 8$ - 12$ for like 300-500 movies... im sorry but in my life ive never owned that many movies lol... so thats a lot of movies available :)
I'm going to buy one to give my poor 360 disc drive a rest.
This doesn't seem to be a price drop, just a site selling open box units. No doubt tons were returned after the Warner announcement.
So who knows what condition your $30 drive will really be in...
Well the shipping to my house is like $12. So I think I'll probably just wait until it goes on super clearance at Target. My boyfriend wants to get one just for Planet Earth in high def. Go figure.
yeah, try finding an hd dvd out there.
Not a bad deal at all. Buy that for $30, and then buy a few lots on eBay and you can have quite the collection for less than a hundred bucks.
lol... at first I skimmed "HD" as "hard drive" and thought "oh nice, they finally lowered the price!"
...but it's just the only thing to bomb faster than UMD.
Does anyone recommend sites for cheap HD-DVD purchases?
here in my city, the xbox hddvd player has been like around $40usd for a while now, and i´ve been thinking in getting one, but the downside is that hddvd movies here are almost impossible to find, and i don´t think Batman Begins will entertain me a lot of time, so what else can the player do, besides movies??? it upscales dvd´s?? can you play games from it?? what else?...
I picked up the drive last week for $25 at K-Mart!
I had been planning to pick up one of these on eBay, but this is a good deal even with $10 shipping and an open box unit. I want an alternative to our crappy launch Toshiba player (which chokes on several titles) so I can enjoy our 10 or so HD-DVD titles (including Serenity and the Heroes Season 1 set) for years to come.
They're sold out. 0_o
People love a bargain...bah, I was too slow.
@phantam: Just a quick fact fix here. People on AVSForum are *NOT* saying that the 360 is "one of the best upconverting dvd players out there." Far from it. The 360 DVD output has been analyzed to death over there and it has been proven that it's output pales in comparison to even the cheapest decent standalone upconverting dvd player.
Yes, the 360 DOES upconvert, but it does a HORRIBLE job of it, on all sorts of metrics. Sorry to burst your bubble there. Even to the untrained eye it's very easy to see dramatic problems in the 360 dvd output, perhaps the easiest to see is a noticeable oversharpening of the image.
yea, i'd pick one (or two) up and kepe them boxed, just in case my current one breaks down the line and I want to watch my copy of Transformers (and whatever other movies I've since picked up for $5).
Just like when I bought another dreamcast when they said they were going to stop making them (but were still available in stores). I still have that baby as insurance in case my other one breaks.
Oh how the mighty have fallen.
Thirty bucks? This is great! I can buy one of these and put it next to my laser disc player and VCR.
