More Saints Row 2, More Busey

Poor Saints Row 2. In a post-GTA IV world, how can it hope to compete? If it keeps looking like this, it won't. But that doesn't matter. We're not here for more on Saints Row 2. We're here for more Busey. I like to think that THQ just went to Gary's house one day, set up a camera and let him talk for a week, then just cut their trailers around his more poignant ramblings.

  • Heck with GTA4....anything with Gary Busey is great!

  • wait, why is Gary promoting this again?

  • Eh, Saints What?!? Oh ya, i remember this game!!! I use it as a tray for my Pb&J sandwiches while I kick back and play GTA4.

    yeah... he was singing :(

  • That was full of awesome.

  • Saints Row is a good game, but not in direct competition of GTA. One of those games you release between the juggernaut to tide people over type things.

  • Gary Busey is a prophet. This game looks bland, mediocre at best.

  • It really is hard to look at this with GTA IV so close. It just looks so....meh by comparison.

  • I believe Volition has essentially acknowledged they aren't, perhaps cannot, make a GTA4 clone, and so they're trying to make the best damn GTA3 clone they can. I don't know that that is necessarily a bad thing.

  • Maybe This wasn't a good time for the company to release more about the game. Love the Busey, the gameplay just looks a little bland.

  • I love gary, he is the man. He might not make since to some people but damnit he's funny. I am getting saints row as well.

  • It's obviously that THQ is using Busey and his eccentrics to sell what will ultimately be an underdelivering game, and I approve whole-heartedly.

If he is in the game, I will buy it in a heartbeat.

  • I think comparing Saint's Row 2 to GTAIV is gonna only leave you disappointed. Based on footage and the EGM preview, it looks like it's going to be about insane amoral violence without any character development. Comparing the two will be like comparing Rambo to Black Hawk Down. One's got an amazing plot, beautiful cinematography, and changes your perspective on war films. One has Sylvester Stallone gunning down 30,000 Vietcong with a minigun. Expect the latter with SR2 and you'll have fun.

  • I almost feel bad for the developers of Saints Row 2....Sadly by tomorrow there game will be nothing more then an after thought to me .

  • Arrrgh people on the east coast are getting their dirty hands on GTAIV as I type, 3 more hours. I kind of like the vehichle destruction in the trailer, blowing up the train with the minigun looked kind of cool

  • I am personally looking forward to both... GTAIV for a serious story partnered with some great gameplay... and SR2 for some over the top balls to the walls fun... it is how I viewed the past GTAs and SR... play one for its greatness and the other for its hilarity...

  • Saints Row 2 doesn't come out until the end of summer so there should be plenty of time to get through GTA4. Its not like they are going head to head with GTA4.

I am a huge GTA fan and I plan on enjoying both games.

  • @Pornosaur:
I already got mine! Haha. Such lovelyness of well acquainted GameStop employees.

  • I'll be getting SR2, along with GTAIV.
The biggest draw is the fact that I'm able to customize my character to insane amounts, customize my cars just as much, and now, in SR2, I get more of both, PLUS the ability to customize the entire gang, PLUS more crib options and customizing.

    Apples and Oranges, IMO...

Where the hell is a videogame starring Busey? I don't think there could be a cooler game, unless it has Nick Nolte and Harlan Williams too. Yes, I like the crazy.
I love you Gary. Call me sometime and I'll listen to your insane ramblings all night...

  • [entimg.msn.com] Busey is a good man. Always liked his views on the government and general philosophy. However, Saints Row 2 is good to poop on.

  • GTA IV, Mercs. 2 and this, DAMN! Gota have all 3. At least GTA IV will tide me over for that genre til Mercs. 2 and Saints Row 2 get released within less than a week of each other, UGH! and then in the fall we get GTA IV DLC for the 360!

I dunno how I'm guna make time for the other 9 games I plan to get between tomorrow and the end of '08. oh, 13 counting Battlefield Heroes.

my wallet's guna have a heart attack!

  • Image of Erwin Erwin at 10:13 PM on 04/28/08 *

@Pornosaur: I'll make you feel better. I'm on the east coast but I'm not getting it yet. I won't be getting it until tomorrow afternoon. All better now?

  • Still getting this and GTA IV, if I had to choose I think I'd go for Saints Row II for a play first. Something about the humor in the first one just stuck with me: "Yeah you kids watch those street racing movies and now you gotta use daddy's money to think you're so awesome!"

  • I loved Saint's Row. It was better than all the previous GTA games. It didn't care how goofy and unrealistic it was, it just wanted to be fun, and it succeeded. Plus, WMDKBOOM was the best radio station ever. I obviously am going to get GTA4, but I am looking forward to Saints Row 2.

  • @Lanhoj:
Mine just had one, with GTA4 for both consoles, mario kart wii+extra wheel, and MGS Preorder/OnlineBeta.
My Wallet is quite comatose at the moment haha

  • @Erwin: Yeah, I'm still debating on whether I should go get in line at Best Buy down the street. I might drive over there at like 11:30, or I could just go to bed and get it in the morning as I'm already feeling tired. Maybe I'll go watch some more gameplay vids.

  • Busey rules. Too bad Volition has spent time making GTA clones instead of putting all that time into Red Faction 3.

  • You know, the First Saints Row was pretty fun, but after everything i've seen from GTA4 I can't help but feel sorry for the attempted franchise, Busey or no Busey. It's like The Little Engine That Could, but you know there's a much better engine one it's way...

  • LOL about the more lead then a chinese toy line ahahaha

  • "Poor Saints Row 2. In a post-GTA IV world, how can it hope to compete? If it keeps looking like this, it won't. But that doesn't matter. We're not here for more on Saints Row 2."

Yeah, because it fails to live up to the pinnacle of the entire fucking genre, let's just dismiss the game.

    How ridiculous is that?

  • I remember people on the kotaku boards dogging gta's graphics when the first trailer was released and saying things like. "Omg the graphics look so bad, i guess im just spoiled by saints row!" It wouldnt be a big deal except there were multiple posts with the same sentiment, not just one.

  • I for one think SR2 looks more fun than GTA 4.

  • I'm ambivalent about SR2, but this truth is clear: if Eli Roth made a movie about what's in Gary Busey's head, civilization as we know it would end.

  • I don't know about its gameplay, but the graphics look like a ps2 game. It just reminds me of a Second Life mod.

  • I can't believe that blatantly intentional attempt at being controversial has worked for me. This game looks pretty cool. Plus I want to blow up trains! (in a game, just in a game!).

  • Saints Row was real good; the best in the genre up to now. For that, Volition definitively deserve we don't dismiss them out of hand for the "saveur du jour".

  • @daschupa:

Take a look at some screens here, the game looks pretty decent. A lot better than PS2 graphics at least: [kotaku.com]

With open world games like this I care a lot less about graphics and more about gameplay.

  • *facepalm*

Volition keeps saying it's a parody, but all I keep seeing is what I'm sure parents think GTA is like. Stupid and violent for no reason.

  • @ME:
@Ignorance's Enemy: I've been good so far, just Burnout Paradise and Army of Two, Fable 1 and Halo 1 plus a few XBLA games in 2008 but ... 13 more (1 free) plus at least a half dozen more XBLA games, UGH!

this is my 3rd year with the 360 and I usually average 1 retail game and 2 XBLA games per month. but in '08 I'm guna get a few more retail games and a few less XBLA ... so i guess it sorta balances out.

  • This almost seems like it's turning into a Sandbox version of "Postal" with splash of production value~ XD

  • @riffleraffle: I don't know how you just trivialized Rambo so quickly. I think you confused the pointlessness of Black Hawk Down, which was really just a pseudo-documentary of American troops shooting Somalian warlords and their kin, with the fantastic character development of the first Rambo, which allowed Rambo, who should have been an anti-hero, to become a sympathetic character in large part because he never drew first blood and he was unable to transition from his traumatic role as a soldier in one of the most demoralizing wars in recent American history. Seriously though, Rambo may have been a little bit unrealistic, and its sequels over the top, but I don't think I can question the character development after the first movie. It's all in that gem.
Now, back to the preview, I doubt Gary Busey even knew what he was promoting.

  • @munchausen: Heh, gotta say it's good to see that people can differentiate between First Blood and RAMBO: First Blood Part 2.

  • I think it would be wise to release Saints Row 2 next year. The game comes out in August, but I doubt people will be completely done with the wonders of GTAIV by then.

Plus this promo wasn't too appealing, especially when they're showing clips from the previous game.

Oh, whatever shall these developers do...

  • Image of 108 108 at 12:30 AM on 04/29/08 *

Wow, yeah. Did anyone else notice that he literally says "here's a good way to get back at the way your parents raised you" while a dude is using a chainsaw to cut an innocent bystander in half? "Flamethrowers work!"

It looks as though THQ are trying to make their game as convenient a target as possible for angry parents. It's like they want someone to actually commit a murder and blame this game, because their marketing division pointed to a big stack of numbers and said "We should give this a shot".

    It's kind of chilling.

That everyone is talking about the release date is kind of creepy :-/

  • i will rent it, but i will not buy it.

  • Oowww I always thought this guy was Nick Nolte. He is actually a cheesy and cheap version !

Sorry Mister Nolte, you were great in "The thin red line".

  • Hm, I enjoyed the first one. It was a solid and fun game! Looking forward to this - looks like its getting ridiculous action, which I like :)

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 04:51 AM on 04/29/08 *

Im so gonna buy this game.

    Loved the first one.

That and Mr. Busey better be in the game somewhere.

That and Mr. Wilson I think you want to have a word with THQ since they ripped your style totally with the vids. ;D

    FRECKLE BITCHES FOREVER!

  • Image of Witzbold Witzbold at 04:55 AM on 04/29/08 *

Hey Luke can you add this one to the mix too? ;D

    Its fucking brilliant!

  • @Witzbold: YEEEEEEARGH!
