Character customization in DICE's Battlefield Heroes certainly looks deep, but we suspect the majority of the good stuff will be had via microtransaction only. I mean, they can't possibly give away the ability to sport a wooden leg for free, can they? The many ways one can primp out their character can be seen in the new trailer above, with screen shots below for the bandwidth starved. It's so cute!

I'd pay 600 dollars for a wooden leg. Sign me up EA.
WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT
*gasp*
WANT WANT WANT WANT WAAAAAAAANT!!!!!!
In all seriousness I am so majorly pumped for this game :D
My character is SO having that pegleg.
ok, this is maybe going to sound stupid but how are you suppose to know who's on each team?
@dude49: Maybe little icons above heads? or the characters could have a glow.
The art style is so much like TF2.
Team Battlefield Fortress Heroes might be good.
Its like EA cloriformed Valve in the middle of the night, and stole TF2, and because there's never enough WW2 games, EA decided to do that, and then they got really drunk, and there was some weird music in the background and in the end, this game showed up.
TF2 with massive vehicle spam, and nade spam. o great...
TF2 was cartoony in a gruesome, cool way.
This game is cartoony in a little kid's cartoony way.
Like, you'd show elementary kids footage of this game for them to understand WWII.
the outfit selection is WoW-esque
It looks like lots of fun!!
I'll probly be playing this all summer after gta releases me from it's corrupting, addicting, ultra-violent, murder-simulator hands.
I'll be playing this all summer after GTA releases me from its child corrupting, ultra-violent, disgrace to human kind, murder-simulator hands.
shit didn't go through the first time >.< if only their was an edit button.
I look foward to putting down folks in my boxers.
@Fadakar:
Yahh wayyy.
But I'm not sure if I like the premise of this game, it just tickles TF2 too much in the wrong way for me.
bet this would run on a wii, mighty fine.
:3
So its a gay TF2 with planes... got it.
@HotFootMcCook:
I know what you mean, at first I dismissed this game as a TF2 copy.
But seeing that video and the peg-leg! I am a changed man! I can't believe the detail and level of customization in this game. Now one of my guilty pleasures will come true...
To be Kroenen! Finally!
(Gets his SS uniform and steel gask mask cleaned)
Looks awesome!
Wow, it's like a gayer, shittier version of TF2
This is going to be sweet
looks good to me =)
looking forward to this, even if EA chooses to ask a buck or two for it
I dont think the gameplay will be anything even remotely resembling TF2.
Imma going to be a undead ninja pirate! Id pay a dollar to be that!
After playing the Battlefield: Bad Company Beta, this looks more interesting.
I won't be buying this game on principal. I'm kind of tired of the whole "ME TOO" philosphy of game design.
That, and the only Battlefield that entertained me for more than a day was 2142.
This looks to blow the pants off of 2142 or the soon to be console game. Tip of my hat to the artists for imitating a great style. Gameplay looks to be a riot too. This is the direction I'd like to see computer games go, looking less at realism and shaders and focusing heavily on low-impact yet fun time wasters which allow you to simultaneously multi-task in the background.
This doesn't look bad, actually.
Why are people talking about buying this? It's going to be released for FREE
Stop bitching.
@LittleBigPlaneteer:I was just about to say something about that. Being the cheap person I am, I won't mind trying it out for free. If it turns out to suck (I don't think it will), then big whoop.
@Defenestration: The game is free.
Good job.
@dabu: yeah they had an article on it a couple months ago and i commented on how it was a ripoff, but now im kinda liking it, it looks fun as hell
Seeing people sitting on wings still cracks me up every time I see it. This game is definitely worth a try.
What's with all the "rabble rabble TF2 ripoff!" stuff? Outside of the visual style it just doesn't look all that similar to me.
For those crying blatant rip-off read this:
"We developed our art style in January 2007. At that point there were very little images out there from Team Fortress. As more details about Team Fortress came out we said 'well there's a similarity here because we're both cartoony, shall we change and go realistic again?'. But no we decided we wanted to keep going. The alternative would have been another gritty, realistic WW2 game and everyone's fed up with those. We really believe in our style and we're just going to go ahead and do it."

In fact rad the whole article
Damn this game reeks ALL sorts of AWESOME!
This is a free game that you play in your web browser, if you don't like it it will cost you nothing.
@LittleBigPlaneteer:
Honestly, I don't believe for a moment that they started development prior to ANY news about TF2 coming out, but that's just my general lack of faith in EA. I personally won't be getting it, even though it's a free download, because it just looks like a dumbed down TF2 clone. I just think that it's far too "cartoon-ey" for my tastes. The reason I felt TF2 was such a success was because it balanced the unrealistic model style with mature-level content. You were having a ton of fun, but it didn't come off like a dumbed down kid-version of the game. (Not saying that there's a problem with those, but in a shooter it would take a lot to persuade me). TF2 had exploding bodies, funny voice clips, and a TON of development time. I may be judging it a little too soon, but so far it's failed to pique my interest.
I think it's a little too close graphically to TF2 to be totally coincidental, especially little things like the little floaty crosses when somebody gets healed.
I want my character to have TWO peg legs... that would be super sweet.
@Gummyworm: I pretty much did too. Put it down as a TF2 clone, that is.
I'm pleasantly surprised, though. It's like it's actively trying to disassociate itself from that image. More power to them.
@Cake_Eater:
"Honestly, I don't believe for a moment that they started development prior to ANY news about TF2 coming out, but that's just my general lack of faith in EA."
Considering how long TF2 was in development limbo, I'd have to agree with you. Claiming 100% originality is "starting work before something is announced" doesn't work so well with Valve, king of delays.
Though truth be told, the original concept for TF2 was very... Different. Still, you did say "ANY news." :)
@Cake_Eater:
They never said they didn't start the game before ANY news. They said they started development during a time when there were little images about TF2. The earlier images of TF2 look very different from the art style they went with and those weren't really released till much later.
Call them liars if you want, but it's not impossible for two developers to work on the same idea independently. It happens more than you think in history.
I stay away from EA games becasue I don't like their business practices or games... but this looks like fun. Plus if it's free then I don't have to worry about them getting my money. So maybe...
@Cake_Eater: But please answer this? How is it a TF2 clone if the CORE GAMEPLAY is based off of Battlefield 1942?
If anything it's a "dumbed down" battlefield game.
@Dauragon C. Mikado: Not to mention that this is developed by DICE, one of EA's city-states. The ones who make games that are actually really good, then release expansion packs and sequels before all the issues in the original game were ironed out.
It'll be nice to play a game by them that I'm not paying for, for a change.
@Oyn: Floating crosses isnt anything original. Its existed in other games before also, since the cross is pretty much a universal symbol for first aid.
Not to mention TF2 isnt the first series thats done the cartoon approach to war. Look at Battalion Wars on the GC
For all you people complaining that it looks like TF2. Try looking at other games out there. There are TONS AND TONS of games that look like other games! Why don't we go criticize those games? Just cause it looks like a game doesn't mean it can't still be fun?
This game shot up to the top of my list. I will gladly pay small amounts of money for those items.
SMALL amounts.
I cant wait for this
@Nikral: Because TF2 is actually good, and thus it's the standard by which Incredibles-style games should be judged upon.
DICE =/ EA.
anyway i think its a good thing that we are moving away from uber realism.
also anyone who says this looks like TF2 is insulting both TF2 and BFH.
watch the video of them explaining the shaders on the characters in TF2.
oh, AND ITS FUCKING FREE.
@Flurp: How on Earth did you come up with that one?
@roflwaffles: It's obviously at least inspied by TF2. Funny how there's only been two games based on WW2 with this artistic direction ... And they happened to happen very quickly one after the other...
Anyway. I can't believe this isn't getting a release - From DICE games its because:
"Everyone's who's got a 360 or PS3 also will have a PC that can run this game"
What a douchebag. I, and I know many others, don't.
You mean I can be a peg-legged Nazi skeleton? Best game EVAH!
Don't forget that there do exist in the world those who think that TF2 is crap-tastic and think that this game will be the much better one.
And its FREE!
and Battlefield...
I don't understand how that doesn't add up to awesome.
sexy
Excuse my ignorance, but what is the financial plan for this game again? Original download free, but planning on making money through loads of microtransactions? Or a lot of in-game advertisement/sponsorships?
For some reason I just can't grasp the idea of EA making such a big game for free.
@roflwaffles: Dude, the art style is undeniably similar to TF2, whether it was influenced by, copied, or had nothing to do with it.
@JamesR87: I think the point he was trying to make is that this game will have really really really REALLY love system requirements.
It'll run on a hamster wheel if it needs to.
*low
*facepalm*
Is it sad that I'm starting to expect the TF2 comparisons now?
That said, I hope chin customization makes it in.
@Cake_Eater: "Honestly, I don't believe for a moment that they started development prior to ANY news about TF2 coming out, but that's just my general lack of faith in EA."
This is where you should've stopped typing.
@Dauragon C. Mikado: Good, cause that's what I have.
