Developer Terminal Reality was at one point pondering having a modern band redo the classic Ghostbusters theme for their upcoming game, lovingly previewed earlier today by our own Flynn De Marco, but as executive producer Brendan Goss would soon realize, people don't react well to blasphemy.
"When we were doing the focus group testing, we asked people how they'd feel about a remix done by a current band. We got booed out of the place," Goss said. "People were really against it, going, 'You can't do that, there's only one song for Ghostbusters!' It was incredible. So we were like, okay, we won't mess with the Ray Parker Jr. song then."Damn straight you won't. Not only will the Ray Parker Jr. classic be in the game, the developers also got their hands on 75 minutes of orchestral soundtrack not used in the original film, which had their sound man nearly wetting his pants with glee. I shall reserve my bladder dysfunction for when they announce the inclusion of "Cleanin Up The Town" by the Bus Boys.
No theme tune remix for Ghostbusters [Eurogamer]

Comments
Are they going to have any Bobby Brown like in the second one?
Oh thank god. Ghostbusters without the original theme would just be... well, wrong.
Damn straight!!! It's the original or nothing. Thank God for focus groups.
Reminds me a little of one of the earlier Star Wars RTS games for PC, featuring a metal remix of the Imperial March as the intro/menu music. Boo indeed.
"Savin' the day!"
I wouldn't have minded a remix by a very good electronic artist or rock band.
Maybe for the credits?...
They can put in a remix at the closing credits, I guess. But, yeah, I'm VERY, VERY HAPPY they aren't going to f*ck up a classic theme song!
Hehe, if I was PISSED that the latest TMNT movie didn't feature their classic theme, I'd have really lost my damn mind over them messing around with the Ghostbusters theme.
How could anyone forget the original theme? It tunnelled into your head like face hugger and left is bitter legacy in your very soul.
Or something like that...
"Bustin' makes me feel goooood!"
Too bad it was a rip off melody of Huey Lewis "I Want a New Drug."
It's an interesting saga, how that worked out. Short version: Ray Parker Jr. isn't the only one getting royalties every time you hear that song played on TV.
lol Awesome!
Funny story- I was walking through Meijer the other and this was playing over their PA. I mean, in October...OK. But in the middle of April? I didn't know what to think, so I did the first thing that came to mind...I sang along (much to my wife's embarassment.)
Typically, the more I hear about a game based on something I loved growing up the more apprehensive I get.
With this Ghostbusters game, it's been completely the opposite. Every bit of news interests me more.
I think it's probably the only song in the world that everyone knows the lyrics to....hehe
LOL, I've been toying with a hardcore remix of the theme for a few months. I still love the original, but it has so much energy that it transfers well to guitars and double-bass drums.
which song is the one that plays when the dude from the city let's all the ghosts out from the containment unit?
They should have included Black Jack's cover, from Be Kind, Rewind.

i'll gladly take some run dmc too
So, Ghostbusters came out in 84/85? and the craptacular sequel came out a few years later.
I'm 30 years old, so I'm hip to the twinkie, but is this relevant to 25 year olds and younger? Or will this perhaps bring about a Ghostbusters revival? I'm hoping for the latter.
" I shall reserve my bladder dysfunction for when they announce the inclusion of "Cleanin Up The Town" by the Bus Boys. "
That would seriously cause me a happy mental breakdown รก la Blastoise boy.
You don't mess with Ray Parker Jr's only thing I have ever heard him sing or do. That is a classic. You can add the remix after the credits.
Messing with the original song would be almost as big a travesty as Venkman not saying, "We came! We saw! We kicked his ass!!!".
They better have that in there too.....damnit. :-)
Oh this is good! Ghostbusters was pretty fun when it came out, the casting was great. If only they could get the original actors to do the ingame voices, that would be even better.
Ah proton packs, everyone dreams of having one as a backpack to shoot at just anything and cause random destruction.
@Figcoinc:
Oh yeah, I'm glad you brought that up! Very good point. They hadn't better leave that out.
@WordMan:
I'm about twenty three and I loved the ghostbusters as a kid. Granted I grew up more with the show than the movie but I was a big fan none the less, and I doubt I was the only one.
@Figcoinc: I hope they keep the humor and the tone of the movie and these great quotes.
For anyone that was too young to remember, it was a comedy not an action or horror movie.
Thank goodness.
@FredQC:
Two in the box.
@FredQC:
Thats the great part! They do have all of the original actors doing the voices! And it's being written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. Everything about this game makes me happy.
@Mommar: I always liked Bobby Brown's theme for the second one better than Ray Parker's (though the first one is certainly a classic).
"Too hot to handle, too cold to hold. They're the Ghostbusters and they're in control!"
"Along comes Vigo, the master of evil. Try to battle my boys? That's not legal!"
This is awesome, having just re-watched both of the Ghostbusters movies, I can say that I am glad they are leaving the Ghostbusters theme alone. I do really hope this game doesn't ruin Ghostbusters though.
@FredQC: The original actors ARE doing the voices, dude.
I'm glad the original theme song made the cut, but I would love to hear a good cover/remix as well.
I don't see the point in trying to give something nostalgic a new edge, that's why people liked it in the first place, it's cheese.
@WordMan:
As one who is now 24, the original Ghostbusters movie is one of my all time favorites and along with the Saturday morning cartoon, defined a large portion of my childhood. I for one will be looking forward to this.
The fact that they were even considering a remix makes me concerned about this game. Ray Parker's work can't be touched. They should also throw in some Bobby Brown for good measure.
As unlikely as it is for several reasons i would have like to hear a version by Gnarls Barkley
We definitely need the Bobby Brown song as well!!!
@WordMan:
I'm 25 and this is my absolute favorite movie. And the sequel wasn't THAT bad. I still run around saying "He is VIGO!"(especially while watching a movie staring Viggo Mortensen) and whenever people are doing something stupid I look away from them wave my arm at them and say "Everything you are doing is bad I want you to know that." It always makes me giggle. And thank god they didn't change the song.
"Bustin' makes me feel good!!!"

No one? Sigh...
Two in the box, ready to go.
We be fast, and...
@Spoony Bard:
..and they be slow.
Oh good, we'll keep promoting the Huey Lewis and the News plagiarism. Yay.
(Still liked the song, but yeah, credit where credit's due, s'alright?)
@silkylove: Phew. Thanks. For a second I got worried there!
@cybereal: Yeah, but Huey got paid. He also gets paid everytime the song is used. No need to constantly mention it!
I think they should have both the original song and new versions. Why not? Good to see that Ray Parker Jr's got some residual cash coming to him :)
I have that 75 minute unused score, and I just hope they get it to work right in the game, it really wouldn't work in the movie at all.
Yeah, you absolutely cannot mess with a classic. The whole point of this game is basically nostalgia (not to mention if done right it could be an awesome game).
At first when I skimmed this story, though, I will say my brain was thinking they were talking about making Ray Parker Jr. an unlockable character, which would be pretty cool as well. ;)
(and I'll agree that Bobby Brown's song was quite good as well but Ray's got the definitive Ghostbusters song)
Didn't they try a rock remix for the Zootfly Ghostbusters game? I guess everyone remembers how that little diddy (henceforth refered to as "what 'total protonic reversal' sounds like") turned out...
@Spoony Bard:
I replied to you in the other one!!!!!!
@what0080: Nope man. Not a whole lot of people remember that... What the heck are you talking about?
RAY PARKER JR. FTW!!!! they did the game justice by keeping the original.
Why do these delusional, coked-up, completely-detached-from-reality marketing types think that doing things like remaking the "Ghostbusters" theme with a current band is a good idea in the first place?
Excuse me--whuzzat?--"Because they're delusional, coked-up, completely-detached-from-reality marketing types"? Point duly noted.
@PapaBear434: I didn't think he got ANY royalties whatsoever? So blatant was the rip off.
Glad they haven't changed the song, that would have been a crime against...song.
It would be nice to see the NES advantage thrown back in there.
I really admire the fact that Terminal Reality is really being aware of long time fans of the franchise, and people involved in the films. They're taking a nod from the Traveling Wilburys and handling this project with care!
/lame music joke
@eastx: Wow! It's gonna be even nicer than I tought.
Remixes are fun, but why not have a remix album where new bands produce their own version of this classic, a tribute album to Ghosbusters. It would sell.
@Spoony Bard: Two proton packs in every box, that's even better!
@dead_red_eyes: Yeah but no one else has taken the bait yet!
Ah, most excellent, Ghostbusters, with the Ray Parker Jr. song, thats how it should be.
Oh, and for the people complaining about Huey Lewis, he's getting paid royalties, and besides, that convinced Lewis to do music for Back to the Future.
Had Ghostbusters not come around, I don't think Lewis would've done the music for BTTF.
@WordMan:
The "nostalgia" industry is massive right now in movies and games. Producers have figured out that the people with the time, inclination and disposable income to indulge in warm fuzzies from the marketing indoctrination of the 1980s are those 25+ (it all started with eBay). You at 30 (and myself, 29) are the primary market for this game.
I just hope the Wii version allows dual-wielding of wiimotes, one as the proton pack and the other to throw the trap. *cue giddy manchild giggles*
@doubtful is karma's whipping boy: I agree. This has a couple of "It's destined to be a bad game" things going for it. 1. It is a movie. 2. It is a title based on nostalgia that could easily be crushed if not careful.
I am glad to hear that they are trying to stay as true to it as they can for the nostalgia factor. (Original cast, original sound track) The movie game factor will not apply here tho because most movie games are rushed to coincide with a films release. This one can be slow roasted to perfection.
It is a good thing that are so many good games coming out till then to keep us all busy. the wait on this one is already starting to suck.
@Mr.SithNinja: You want to know what a bad Ghostbusters movie game was? Ghostbusters for the NES, that right there was bad.
