As it generally goes when there's high profile Wii release such as Mario Kart, the Virtual Console is keeping a low profile this week, releasing only one game on the Wii Shop Channel for your classic gaming enjoyment. At least they aren't skimping out on quality as well as quality, as this week's release is none other than Double Dragon, the story of two brothers' fight to rescue one girlfriend from a shadowy organization hell-bent on learning the secrets of their martial arts. We are introduced to Billy and Jimmy Lee, as well as Billy's girlfriend Marion, who gets shot to death in Double Dragon II, making the tragedy of the first game all the more poignant. Double Dragon for the NES (500 points) will be available today for those of you requiring a tiny break from all that furious karting.

Double Dragon II is where it's at. The first one had no co-op! What baloney!
"quality as well as quality"
a tiny break from all that furious karting.
I read "kurious farting". I need to change my diet.
Me thinks that tatoo has broken your typing abilities!
@TitillatedOcelot: Is that what it's called when it sounds like its asking a question?
@megaStryke: yes it did have co-op.
yah i have the original Double Dragon still for NES,
kinda upset when it didn't have co-op
thought i had to enter a code or something, you know, ^^,vv,, A, B, B, A
The best version of this was the one for the Sega Master System.
...But I'm guessing they are releasing the Nintendo version.
Hey, it's Jimmy and Bimmy!
@LionheartAce: YES AVGN FTW!!
im going to go check for updates now.
Shot to death in the second game?
Spoiler alert, Fahey.
I hated this game as a kid! I always end up at the final boss with two hits left and then the ass shoots me dead. And then come to find out later that he's not even the final boss!
I will say that Abobo's theme is 100% bad-ass.
/buying Double Dragon right now
@akashhhhh: Spoilers for a game that's 19 years old.
@BillyLee: Not the NES version.
I found a website that showcases every version of the Double Dragon games with a short review and a bunch of pictures. Kinda interesting stuff, especially the Atari 7800 version of Double Dragon.

Alyssa Milano was killed in the second part? Those gangs were stupid enough to mess with Schwarzenegger's daughter? They had it coming, then, with or without Lee brothers.
i never beat this game on the NES. 2 player 1 on 1 fighting was pretty comedy
At least the Wii got Double Dragon now. Just like the 360. Damn you Sony. Why can't I have it [on my PS3]? I love Double Dragon!
PSN is great for these unique titles and I appreciate the PS1 classics but damn, how about some of the great "pick up 'n play" games of the old? Street Fighter maybe?
Yea, I know that most of these games were Nintendo/Super Nintendo games, but that didn't hold Microsoft back.
Where the heck is Super Mario Kart. Come on!
so, was April National Beat-em-up Month?
Ahh i want part 2 for the nes.
I've still got it somewhere in the box. Cost me $AUD 70 back in the day. I remember finishing it so many times with my brother.
Such a classic
This is fucking AWESOME! Last week we get River City Ransom, this week we get Double Dragon?!
Captain, I'm detecting large quantities of Win in this sector.
XBLA had this ages ago and has LIVE support, so how can they justify the purchase on the Wii's VC ?
no thanks. 360 version FTW
I've got fond memories of the SMS version, and the lack of 2 player coop on the NES version kills this as a purchase for me.
Anyone else remember getting DD for the SMS free? I think they gave out free games a couple times early on.
I loved the 2nd one because of coop.
Shot to death in the second game, yet somehow Marion ends up getting possessed by an Egyptian spirit and becomes the final boss of Double Dragon III.
Oh god, Double Dragon III was confusing as well as horrible to play.
@Lanhoj: The NES version of Double Dragon is different from the arcade/XBLA version. Even so, I played the demo of the XBLA version, and I thought that the revamped art style was hideous.
@Lezard: Yes, but they did offer the option of playing with the original, Beautiful arcade art. IMO DD Arcade is a much better game than the NES version (which is absurdly difficult towards the end) but both are good fun.
In honor of NES Double Dragon coming to the VC, here is my Forza 2 Double Dragon car.

@Swordmonkey:
The NES' version does have 2 player coop, as well as a mode where you can also hit each other.
I still have this on the NES. It was always a pain to get through even after using the "kick the invisible guy" trick to load up on points and abilities. Still pretty fun.
HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!
only 30 more minutes until i get to download this. The VC choices have been great these past few weeks. I hope we get DD2 also i miss those hurricane kicks & co-op but DD1 did have that versus mode LOL good times!
Man, I was hoping Nintendo would give me Baseball Stars for my birthday :(
@Parapraxis:
I'm confused, every where I've checked it lists it as 2 players alternating turns instead of true coop?
@eastx: LOL that was freaking awesome.
@Swordmonkey: The arcade one has co-op the NES version you take turns.
@MURDERFACE: Thanks! I'm happy with how it turned out. I would have made more cars, but my girlfriend at the time got quite jealous that I wasn't paying attention to her.
@Parapraxis: Nope, the only two-player in NES Double Dragon is two-player versus. It's worth messing around with for a few minutes though.
@Swordmonkey: The NES version is 2-Player alternating, but the arcade version had 2-Player co-op. The NES version does however have a 2-Player simultaneous versus fighting mode.
The only one I ever owned was III (The Sacred Stones), and it was tough as hell!!!
@crescentfresh: Sure was! I got that game for my birthday and beat it multiple times, but it took a ton of practice to master. DD 3 NES had some great ideas and was actually far superior to the hideous coin-op version, but I wish they had balanced the difficulty more fairly. Good thing the graphics and especially music were excellent for the NES.
@eastx: yeah a Abobo car would be EPIC! hahaha
Oh yes yes yes!
This series (especially the gameboy version) along with the TMNT series were the only sidescroller brawlers I could stomach. Oh, and Final Fight but that's just a special... SPECIAL game.
Anyway thanks N!
Next request: GET US GAMEBOY VC DAMNIT. I want to play Metroid II and Link's Awakening again :(
@cybereal: You didn't like battletoads? I loved that game till you get to the stupid bike level.
@Jacktherip: Really? I actually LIKED the bike level. Of course I always just warped. And I also had the Nintendo Power map memorized. Great game, but it got too difficult toward the end.
@Jacktherip: Well, two good levels out of a game with like 10 or more levels does not make a great game. Some people learn to beat that horrendous level, but I call them either cheaters (save states) or masochists. It was pretty clever of Rare to throw something in like that to make sure that nobody could enjoy the whole game, though. Why the heck would you want anybody to see the latter 3/4 of the game? As a developer, I sure wouldn't! hee hee.
@cybereal: what? no Streets of Rage on your list????
@Jacktherip: Battletoads rules, but fuck that game, I through the remote so hard at my tv that it cracked the glass. fuck. that. game.
streets of rage is the best beat em up (series) of all time.
errr um "threw". Monday morning brain freeze up at work
Double Dragon was the first game I played on the Master System... It really was ahead of its time with its glitches & clipping extravaganza, way before 3D introduced us to the joys of disappearing body parts.
@LionheartAce: Yeah thats what I was going to say.
Bimmy!
She dies at the beginning, but doesn't she come back to life at the end in traditional sci fi cheese.
Would have been better if they had just kept her dead. It would have made Double Dragon II the No Country for Old Men of video games. ha ha maybe not.
Definitely would've made sense to release Super Mario Kart today, if not last week.
Being a hardcore fanatic of the arcade version of Double Dragon (I could usually finish on one quarter), I was upset by the NES port.
Crappy graphics, nerfed weapons, bizarre xp/leveling system, and the best attack in the arcade game, elbow, was next to useless!
Ok, it was still fun, but it was no River City Ransom, which was (to me) superior in pretty much every way. Heck, I had more fun with Renegade than Double Dragon. You can knee people in the balls until they die! Now why don't we see that mechanic in more games!?
@Parapraxis: You are thinking of a later Double Dragon, most likely Double Dragon 2, which had the 2 coop modes you described. The original NES title had NO coop mode.
@TitillatedOcelot: Don't worry. I thought I read that, too.
MINE!
