A few months ago, I spoke with EA Sports' Chris Erb about Madden. Guy said that every year they had "100 guys calling us, begging to appear on the cover". So it's odd that when settling on a cover star for Madden 09, they went not for a player who's Madden crazy, but a guy who positively bah humbugs the thing.
I'm not savvy enough to play this game. Most of the younger generation has no idea [Madden] coached...Some of our guys play Madden better than they play on Sundays. And they spend more time talking about playing Madden.Guess Brett won't be helping promote the game much, then.
Madden '09 cover boy Favre not contemplating NFL comeback [ESPN]

What a great choice for a cover athlete.
@eastx:I'd rather him speak his feelings on it instead of putting a spoon fed PR spin out there. He's not saying anything that shocking really when you look at the ages and such of the NFL players.
I'm sure they all get their copies of Madden free too.
@Foxstar Sixtail: PR talk is one thing, but not being interested in the product that you are promoting is another.
He doesn't have to be interested in the game, but he should be able to realize that he's been given an honor that other players only wish they could have. He might try to be a little more grateful.
@eastx: He's not really promoting it....That's not how the Madden cover works.
@eastx: I agree. I'm not the biggest Madden fan in the world but at least grab a cover athlete who'll be excited for the game.
"Some of our guys play Madden better than they play on Sundays."
i laughed at this....guess EA doesn't pay to the cover athlete...so Favre can say whatever he wants to...
It's an honest opinion. The guy is just not into Madden.
He used to be quite the player, so they put him on the cover as a comemoration of the franchise. He's from another generation. What's so strange about not liking Madden?
I think Brett's always been an NFL Blitz guy.
I understand the guy is being honest but he could have turned down being the cover guy, he wouldn't have been the first to do that.
Plus Brett's a was more so an NFL Quarterback Club guy.
@Ashurahori: Not liking Madden is probably normal. The cover athlete not liking it is kind of unusual, to my knowledge.
Ok, so I guess we can chalk this up to reason #2 as to why the curse will not work this year. Kinda like those old movies where they tell you that somehting cant hurt you so long as you dont believe in it.
I was going to buy it anyway, want it even more now that Favre is the coverboy. I'd bet good money I'm not alone. Well played, EA Sports, well played.
So Jeff Bell has an actual chance of laying the smackdown on him at E3!
@TheeAhaMoment:
i had NFL Quaterback club 96 for SNES and Quaterback club 98 for N64. good times.
As long as Tom Brady isnt on the cover, im fine with it.
I find it more interesting that we will criticize someone for telling the truth because telling the truth doesn't fall in line with that person's new job description.
At some point (and I can't put my finger on it), telling the truth became inappropriate. Uncool.
@DoubleOh187:
It works with politicians!
You know, I think this might actually be something he has in common with Madden himself - I doubt he plays the game.
Daemn, Favre just ripped up Madden fans.
@Dakobah: You know, Favre pretty much sets himself a record because of those games. He has been on two football game franchise covers, more than 10 years apart. That is ridiculous.
favre lets play some nfl 2k5 :)
Sounds like Favre is upset that players spent too much time playing games than practicing.
Which isn't unexpected from some one like him, really. I mean the guy broke a billion records and loved the sport more than anyone. Never missed a game, etc etc.
Who can blame him? It probably ticked him off to hear team mates yapping away about Madden all day while he was busy practicing.
One more reason why Brett Favre rocks. An NFL player that hates Madden? That's an NFL player i'll respect forever.
@QualityJeverage:
You have it twisted. EA is the one who should be honored to have a living legend on their cover.
Favre is now a Football god in my mind.
As a gamer i'm disgusted at what madden games have become. lol the same game with minor new features like oooo weight lifting mini-games!!.
@deathtastic: Not to mention that the core game has also diminished, realistic play and franchise mode are what count. As long as they are focused on the Madden Challenge 1 min quarter type BS the game will suffer greatly.
@EmerilLIVE: I used to love madden back in the PS1 and 64 era. Gameday98 was the only other football game that mattered but Madden was still tops in my book. But over the years I just gave up on it. Too many money plays, too many glitches and bugs and not enough effort put into presentation, animation and commentary.
I still can't get anyone to explain to me how Madden of today is supposed to be "realistic" football when I see too many people run 20 yards back to throw a 10 yard pass. This is even if they have a pro bowl caliber offensive line and a top tier QB. I don't understand why the game still allows for QBs that aren't known to scramble, to do just that and still complete passes under pressure. I still can't understand why an average QB can throw a deep pass to a rookie receiver in triple coverage against good corners and safeties and complete it...on multiple occasions. It goes on and on.
Why would EA allow 2k to present some of the best advances in gaming football in 2k5 and not capitalize on those advances (read: rip them off) for every version of Madden that came after? Of course sales figures would answer that...they don't need to change the game all that much because people will still buy it even though it has done nothing for the genre in years.
It's a shame really...Madden used to be THE standard for gaming gridiron action...but now, it's just a joke IMO. If Madden is my only choice for football, I just won't play the genre anymore.
@DoubleOh187: Ah, so you are asserting that people should sell their images and endorsements to products that they do not actually like. I see now. That is truly the best way to do things.
@TheeAhaMoment:
Hell yeah '99 baby. FAVRE IS GOD
This reaction doesn't much surprise me. I saw Letterman interview Favre recently and was shocked by what a curmudgeonly old man he seemed to be. It was entirely believable when Letterman asked Favre what he does these days while sitting on his infertile ranch and the response was "nothing much... take the kids to school."
I think Favre is just one of those guys who lives to work.
Misleading title, and more random commenters that don't read articles.
"He also admitted he did not play the Madden game, which is celebrating its 20th year by highlighting Favre on the cover.
But he sardonically noted the current Packers -- at least those in their 20s -- are heavy into the video game.
"I'm not savvy enough to play this game," Favre said. "Most of the younger generation has no idea he coached.
"Some of our guys play Madden better than they play on Sundays. And they spend more time talking about playing Madden.""
That is all that is said about Farve and Madden.
So
1) He doesn't play madden (he likes simple games)
2) He thinks most gamers don't even really know who Madden is.
3) He has beef with teammates that devote more time to a video game than a job they are paid millions of dollars a year to play.
@Obiter: That and, you know. Guy's nearly 40. He's allowed a certain degree of crankiness.
At least there's a chance of this breaking the Madden curse.
@eastx:
there is sarcasm in there right???
