Where Bionic Commando And Nintendo Stand

The PSN and Xbox Live Arcade are getting Bionic Commando remakes. But what about the original game? Why isn't that on the Virtual Console? BC producer Ben Judd told IGN: "If it's not on the Virtual Console, you can bet there's a reason for it." Game blog Siliconera points to Capcom mouthpiece Christian Svensson added his two cents: "Guys, you have to take this up with Nintendo. This is NOT, repeat NOT, a Capcom issue. Please remember, Nintendo calls the shots on what goes up on VC, not third parties." Let the conspiracy theories commence!

But where does Bionic Commando stand regarding Nintendo? There was that internet petition, but it's ground to a halt — everyone's forgotten. Here's what Capcom producer Ben Judd told Kotaku:

Of course I know Bionic Commando's history, and it's relationship to Nintendo platforms. A Wii version is something we are considering. And if we did a Wii version, it would not be a port of the next-gen games or a remake. It would be an original title, but wouldn't use the Wii-mote for one-to-one swinging. I have a pretty creative idea for how to handle the controls.

No one-to-one swinging, but "creative" Wii-mote controls? Could it be simply *gasp* pressing buttons?!

  • Hopefully it'd be a sidescroller in a similar vein to the FANTASTIC looking Bionic Commando Rearmed with pointer-controlled aiming.

Nintendo calls the shots, not third parties...eh?

If that's the case, Nintendo is being mean keeping all the gems at bay. Meanies. :(

  • Bionic Commando:Primes

  • nintendo haets exploding hitler heads

  • I remember the old Nintendo books. I read the bionic commando one. [/randomthoughtoftheday]

  • @Magic Emperor Anima: more importantly, this lends credibility to the whole Nintendo said no to Golden Eye thing. I'm not crazy for it but its the principle of the matter

  • Think about it, the bionic commando game is also advertisement for the new one coming up. If Nintendo puts it up on VC, it could help its competitors. Sure it sucks, but it makes business sense. You know, I guess. Maybe they'll allow some time after the new BC game launches.

  • @Quartzblade: Then why is Snake in Smash Bros? I mean, won't that act as an advertisement for MGS4?

Nintendo has no more to lose from snake on Smash bros than they do from Bionic Commando on VC...

BTW, I think BOTH third parties and Nintendo call the shots... What Capcom's saying is "We want it on VC, Nintendo's said no"

VC is not what was promised and what made me want a revolution when I first heard about it... All will be forgiven once the 3 mother games hit, though... Any day now, Nintendo.

  • @Quartzblade:

By the same token the one coming out brings attention to the one on the VC netting more purchases, it's not a one way street.

  • Well, it's not as if they can flood the VC market with gems right away. That wouldn't be terribly intelligent.

  • Sounds like someone at Nintendo is being bastards, that's a first... Not

  • Watch its going to be a FPS with MP3-like controls... Either way. yay Cappie.

@bobtheduck: I'm still waiting for at least Earthbound to hit.

@Quartzblade: as bobtheduck said, look at Brawl. A MGS4 song remixed for the game, and even the new Metal Gears appear.

  • @bobtheduck: "Then why is Snake in Smash Bros? " , thats what i was asking myself, the same with sonic, they really s_ck as fighters on SSBB, i guess they put them to make them look weak or dumb...

  • @ThisCharmingMan: I agree with you, small dosis is better if you just put the whole thing out there!

@bobtheduck: Yeah! Though I think it's better if they port all 3 in to one DS cartridge as rumored once. Unless they can Port Mother 3 to match up the 480P then that would be awesome...

  • Snake is in because Kojima's been begging Nintendo to include him ever since Melee was in development. Since that's the case, I bet Konami gave Nintendo discount with the license fee. As for Sonic I remember reading Nintendo and Sega had an agreement to make crossover games and include the mascots of both companies.

And I don't buy this rubbish talk about Nintendo trying to prevent people from helping its competitors. It makes more business sense to put the game up on VC and earn whatever revenue you can from it than not including it and earning nothing while people move onto your competitors anyway. You honestly think people would never have heard of or be exposed to Bionic Commando advertising outside of Virtual Console? Especially in this age of access to information?

  • @UmeShoryu: I don't think anybody bought it. That was just Quartzblade's silly idea. :)

  • Wasn't there some rumor that Nintendo is still mad at Capcom about RE4 going multi-platform, and that's why Mega Man wasn't in Smash Bros Brawl? Maybe this is a continuation of that grudge?

  • @darthmole12: And yet Nintendo has no problem allowing Capcom to release Okami on the Wii. I don't hear Sony crying over it.

Heh, when you wrote about the supposed grudge Nintendo has I was immediately reminded of the Hiroshi Yamauchi days and how much he hated Squaresoft after they bailed on the N64 and its low storage capacity and released FF7 on PS1. That hate lasted until he stepped down as President (Maybe he still hates them I dunno). For Yamauchi, a third party going multiplatform is serious business!

  • Considering how much of what third parties have said about not recieving assitance from Nintendo such as not being able to use Miis or resorting to game generated friend codes for the wii turning out to be nonsense, I don't trust Capcom's word on this.

Wiiware in one month has done what xbox live arcade took six months or so to do sales wise.

For those don't realize the only time Microsoft commited on paid downloads on xbox live arcade it was something like 600,000 paid downloads out of 3 million downloads. So only 1 purchase while four are demos, redownloads etc. Unless that has changed the wii vc service had more paid downloads in one year then xbox live has done in three years.

No wonder a lot of xbox live developers have said the xbox live arcade is crap and wiiware is a better offering.

  • People are quick to forget about the fact that the Wii will be on the market for at least another four years (but given what the product stands for, and what its central audience is besides hardcore gamers, it could be around for a lot longer), so Nintendo has to divide Virtual Console releases over that period. In other words, taking it two or three releases a week at a time, with only the occasional gem every once in a month or two, rather than dishing out all the must-have classics in the first year or two.

This may mean that we won't see Bionic Commando for another year or longer, but that's just the way it's gonna be.

  • And yet... people still love Nintendo blindly.

I can't deny their history and their impact on my own life, but at the same time, I have never once believed that they could do no wrong. They do wrong all the time, especially when it comes to their continuous desire to put out consoles and their insane publishing policies. Not saying that's gospel and everyone should feel the same way, but come on. Why are Nintendo fans so rabidly loyal?

  • @MeleeKirby:

As easy as it is for people to complain about Game X not being on VC yet, you're exactly right.

As much as I'd love being able to download everything I want now, Nintendo would screw themselves over if they released every classic game in the first year. Would you rather have a Ninja Gaiden and a Donkey Kong Math now, or wait until 2009 and have a steady stream of X-Men, Legend of Kage and Deadly Towers?

  • @MeleeKirby: If nintendo ony knew how many games I wanted on the VC, got tired of waiting, emulated on my PC with better graphics filtering and the occasional netplay (everyone should play rocknrollracing for the NES online with a friend. Oh, and I got VOIP on the pc too. hmmm ) and played until I got bored, the whole list would be out by now.

  • @hegemonyhog: Well, its not like you can't buy them after they have been released a while ago. that's the whole point, they're classics. People still buy Mozart, and they will still buy super mario world on the VC for a long time. I don't get why there's this "need" of having the latest thing. I do my buying trough discounted games, that are out for a while. noone here could possibly have played them all already. Its not like a cake, it will not rot if you leave it in your drawer. It's just the goddamn marketing that makes we feel like you are going to be out of the loop if you don't have GTA IV the moment it's out. Don't mind the fact that it will be a perfectly good game for 4 years and more, if you don't have it THIS WEEK it's too late.

  • @Magic Emperor Anima: If you remember correctly this was how Nintendo did business back in the 80s and 90s. They locked up business by making their own carts. Or at least thats what i remember hearing.

  • bring the remake of bionic commando not the next gen version but new 2-d like with 3d.

  • @Bunn: yeah. i won't feel left out if i don't buy mario kart wii RIGHT NOW.

you can always get it later.

    :)

  • Well maybe my reason isn't correct, but really what other reason would Nintendo have to cockblock capcom? I really can't think of any.

  • Reggie has stated in the past it was largely up to third parties what games appeared on VC and what did not, so I'm taking this with a grain of salt. As @Yetanotheruninspiredscreename:
said, there's been someone saying one thing and the truth being some other.

The only way to know is ask Nintendo again. If it is true, I'd say this isn't very wise of them unless the pool of VC games they have to draw from for the next 3-4 years is that small. And it may very well be, I know looking at most of the publishers of a number of Nintendo titles that came out for the NES in the day, tons of them are no longer around.

  • @Foxstar Sixtail: I don't think Reggie is going to come out and say, "Yeah, we're assholes." You have to take MS, Sony, and Nintendo execs with sale grains. I trust developers to be honest much more than the big 3...

@Quartzblade: The only two reasons I can think of are that they object to the way Hitler dies at the end, or that they've already planned out the releases so far into the future that Capcom has to just throw their hands up in the air over it.

  • @eastx: Err, salt grains. Grains of salt. Whatever.

  • Image of Saint Anima Saint Anima at 04:40 AM on 04/28/08 *

@TOCATL: Snake sucks as a fighter? Beg to differ. Then again, this isn't the time or place to discuss that...but I'm pretty sure you either probably don't know how to use him, or fought people who suck with him.

  • I don;t feel like debating whether Snake sucks as a fighter, but I'll just tell TOCATL that he's wrong.

  • There's two reasons why it's not on the VC.

    1.)Adolf
    2.)Hitler

But, honestly, I"m so glad that Splatterhouse and River City Ransom ARE on the VC that I could care less at this point.

  • Well, I have the NES version on the GBA and NES, so me not feeling the urge to buy it again is a plus for now...

  • "Bionic Commando" was the main reason I was looking forward to the Virtual Console, but it never came, and my patience waned so I sold the Wii on Craigslist.

  • Image of okenny :) okenny :) at 08:18 AM on 04/28/08 *

I could simply be Nintendo just likes to avoid drama (as you get when two or more corporations "talk") and focus all of it's resources on rehashing quality games. (That's not a front-handed insult... it's a back-handed complement ;D ...and it's true too)

  • @Sasquatch: You spent $250 just to play Bionic Commando? I understand how the VC as a whole could be a main Wii selling point, but wouldn't it have been cheaper to buy a Famiclone and used copy of the game?

  • Forgetting RE 4 for Wii, has capcom made ANY money off of a Nintendo console in the past 12 years?

  • @megaStryke: Are you kidding me? He probably made more money on the resale than he paid for the system in the first place. It was a smart buy either way.

  • @globones: REUC was also a million seller

  • Christian Svensson also said that the Wii wouldn't be getting those sort of titles and, at best, would get RE remakes some time ago so I take what he says on this with a pinch of salt.

  • @globones: Megaman Zero, Zero 2, Zero 3, Zero 4, all the battle networks, Megaman 9 redone for the GBA, Breath of Fire 2 remade for the GBA, Megaman Command Mission or something like this for the GameCube, Super Street Fighter 2 for the GBA (Excellent Remake), RE4 for GameCube, RE Zero for GameCube, The Legen of Zelda: Oracle of Season and Oracle of Ages (yes, Capcom got a lot of profit from here)

Capcom has been getting a lot of profit releasing games for nintendo, specially from the handheld area

  • @globones: Someone already pointed out Umbrella Chronicles, but I would like to add that the Phoenix Wright games are doing fairly well in Japan (and well enough to continue getting the new installments in America). The Mega Man handhelds also seem to do alright.

  • @cjlopez: Bah, beat me to it, and had a more complete list...

  • @Ghede:
I've never seen this Bionic Commando book! I must have it!

I dont see why they wouldn't just release the original as is on the VC. I hope they catch on after BC Rearmed does a bazillion dollars...ok maybe not a bazillion, but a lot.
