It's official Mario Kart Wii is live and in stores. Tristan and I have been playing it for a few days now, and I think it's a pretty solid, albeit, familiar title. This latest iteration of Mario Kart really doesn't stray from the formular, but why should it?
What are your thoughts on the game? If you're spending the day playing it and are looking for some fellow Kotakuites to play with drop your Friend Code (and impressions) here. Mine is 7261 8567 6364 9952.
Now get to racing... and no blue shells!

You actually need the shorter MKW code from the Wifi section to play, not the Wii friend code. But I'm going to add you anyway :D
Also, in lamest news ever - only 30 friends allowed in Mario Kart Wii. :/
As for the game, I'm an Aussie so I've had it a few days and I love it. Some of the Retro Cup tracks are not the best choices but the new ones make up for it.
Hey Brian,
Can you please post the GTA iv review 55 mins early as its already past my bedtime and I gotta wake up early tomorrow.
I'm an idiot and forgot to include my codes *facepalm*
Wii code: 3405 8438 8300 7763
MK Wii code: 1161 0062 1011
I've been on the fence about this, but I might hit up Wal-Mart and see if they have it in. Especially if everyone is sharing friend codes. Sadly, I have none on my Wii :( Everyone I know that owns a Wii only plays Wii sports and doesn't go online with it.
Wtf, the friend codes for MK Wii are 12 digits? Aren't they normally 9?
Still don't know why the Wii number doesn't work as a 'friend code' for every online game. Majesco is coming out with a game that does just that, I hope more developers do the same thing.
Have fun playing MK, I'm banned from purchasing any more games, 'cept for GTA4, until after the B-day. My woman get pissed that I buy all the games I want and she then has to figure out something else to buy me :). May 26th, can't wait!

I will race you, Brian Crecente
I was amazed by how quickly the Wii Wheel became second-nature. I was prepared to switch back to the Gamecube controller after testing it out, but there's no need to.
And bikes really do add to the game. I was worried they would just be karts in disguise, but they are actually quite a bit different.
I've also had a quick look at online, and it looks pretty slick. It's certainly far better than Mario Kart DS was.
My only complaint is that the Mirror cups are damn difficult in single-player mode. I've been trying to get a gold cup in all of them this afternoon, and it's not easy. My arms are about to fall off. But there are just two cups to go, so I might keep at it.
Wait, my wii code is 3309 4229 0748 6040
"I think it's a pretty solid, albeit, familiar title."
So par the course for major Wii releases.
Being in the UK I've been playing the game for a while and its lovely to have a Wii game that actually seems to work online great.
My codes are:
Mario Kart: 3866-8244-1735
Wii: 2207-7723-8598-8490
Brawl: 2578-2963-8046
I'll get it soon enough, my code's
6990 6769 9139 7874
My friend code: 1332-8060-5236
But I probably wont have a chance to play online until next weekend.
@KaneRobot
C'mon, Mario Galaxy was a very new experience, as was No More Heroes.
I got MK last night at midnight and played if for a couple of hours. It is a solid title and, quite honestly, I don't see how I can possibly ever play GTA IV more than it. GTA IV may be the better game, but MK is just too darn fun not to play.
I haven't gotten home to my own Wii yet (nor to my wavebirds), so I've been playing with the wheel. The game controls very well with the wheel and it's very fun. Having said that, when I'm online and playing you guys, I'll have to use the wavebird as there are a couple of times that the wheel doesn't do exactly what I want when powersliding.

@Marlor: I was amazed by how quickly the Wii Wheel became second-nature.
Really? I found the Wii Wheel to be a waste of plastic and after one cup went straight for the Wiimote and Nunchuck combo.
Each to his own I suppose ^^
zomg, Crecente's friend code!!!
I hope you have 1 billion friend spots open. ;)
Mah Mario Kart Wii Friend Code?

My wii friend code is: go **** you self Nintendo and shuv your ******* wii ******* friend ******* codes up your money making *****!
BTW, I'm adding all of you above my comment.
@Hedgeworth: I did the exact same thing and instantly improved.
@Hedgeworth:
Within 5 minutes, I'd got the hang of it, and thought it was fantastic.
I guess it's just something you either love or hate.
I don't have enough money

Rush = win
Been playing it non stop since lauch (europe) and I have yet to unlock all karts/bikes and characters. Its a shame there no customization in multiplayer, as for everything else, just awesome.
Yah, theres a lot of abuse to the guy that goes in 1st place, but nothing I can handle.
Can't, "CAN'T handle".
Damm you, keyboard!!!11!11!11one!one
I'll be back around 1pm with my copy... dumb ole me for putting my preorder in at a mall ebgames -_-
@todorok1: No, but I can post at exactly 10 a.m. our time, which is about an hour from now.
@Shiryu:
In offline multiplayer, there's a fair bit of customization in the rules menu. You can select to race single races, a four-race series, tone-down the item boxes, etc.
I'm not sure about online multiplayer, however.

@LedRush: Indeed they do. Did you see their summer tour last year?
Won't get mine 'till later today, is online multiplayer like the DS version where they have a win/loss record viewable by strangers and an emblem? I won't care about Wii/Friend codes if that's the case.

Man, I just popped into this thread to see what folks thought of MK Wii and I had no idea you all had to go through this many codes just to play a game. How do you remember them all? I guess there must be some interface that you can call up that tells you all your codes, but do you then have to tell all of your friends all your new codes? Good grief. There has to be some 3d party community site that has made this a lot easier, right? Seems like a good opportunity to make some ad dollars.
* Added everyone up until this post... now, to sign in~
@Jomolungma: ...we DON'T remember them all. We write them up in paper, share them with as many people as wel can.
Had Mario Kart since its launch in the UK and if I've played online over the weekends to get over 1000+ wins (11 or every 1st place win) and a total of 400+ races played in total offline and online, I really enjoyed it. Online is miles better than the single player and is holding me back from unlocking characters and karts.
@Jomolungma:
I personally use VC forums

@Brian Crecente:
I can't believe he had the nerve to ask that, but that's nice that you replied to him B.C.
Going to pick this up in the afternoon with my buddy and we're going to murder the rest of the day playing it!
AHHHHH, 25 minutes left! I miss Mario Kart so much. My god damn Gamestop decided to have a midnight launch for GTAIV instead of Mario Kart Wii :(
I'm loving up mario kart big time, it's great fun esp online as Mii!
@Marlor: Tehre zero potions for online... thats the problem... and were always forced to play as teams, no free for all... its my only complain. :(
I don't have Mario Kart, but I loves me some Penny Arcade.
Glad to hear the online is working out well, though.
Mario Kart Wii is great online. It's so simple and quick to get going. And surprisingly lag free. Playing worldwide, with people from America, Europe and Japan in the same race, with no lag whatsoever, is very impressive.
Good times all around!
Mario Kart Wii code: 2363-5942-3697
Personally, while I found the Wii Wheel to work quite well, I ended up using the classic controller. Much more comfortable with it than the wheel, or even the gamecube controller. The snes-ish shape of it brings back memories.
Much like Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Kart Wii has a lot of unlockable content. I've gotten the gold on every cup, including mirror, but I still have 3 characters and a few bikes and karts I have yet to unlock.
@Big_Jock:
Aye, I love playing as Mii. It's somehow so much more fulfilling to shove a red shell up someones arse when the character doing it looks just like me. ^_^
I'm in the UK, so have had Mario Kart for a few weeks. Still very much enjoying it! I've been steadily working my way through the unlockables (I now have golds on all cups and am trying to get stars), as well as keeping up with a friend's record on Wario's Gold Mine and dropping into online matches. I do like the way you can send and download ghost data - it means you don't have to be online at the same time as your friends, but can still have a real level of competitiveness!
The wheel was a lot more responsive than I thought it would be, but it can let you down on crucial corners, so I tend to use the wheel for online play (just to give my friends a fighting chance), but the Wiimote-plus-nunchuk for Time Trials, etc.
One thing that shocked me was that when I switched from Manual to Automatic, my times and general performance improved ... a lot! I guess my mini-turbo skills aren't as 1337 as I thought.
I tend to play as my Mii (had to customise it so that I turn out as a middle-weight character), using the Wild Wing, or the Dasher B (?).
It would be cool to race against some Kotakuites - my MK code is 0860-3363-4998 and my Wii code is 0971 8633 6783 1495. Will add everyone on this thread.
Hoping Mr Crecente puts his MK friend code on here or responds to the Wii friend request!

:( Played it at my friend's place... I was disappointed with some of the lack of options, as well as how super overpowered items are.
There were numerous matches where a key item drop made a character go from 12th to 1st, and win the match, skill doesn't matter as much anymore.
@Hedgeworth: So now Nintendo limits the amount of friends we can have online? To me thats sounds like the limitations of the ingenius idea of having no harddrive.
So let me get this straight, just like in Smash Bros. Brawl there's an additional friend code on top of Wii friend code. One for the console and one for the game. Wow... Nintendo really paved the way for people wanting to get to know one another.
@Brian Crecente: It's just a thought, but since Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii are going to take up a majority of Nintendo Wifi and I'm sure a consensus of the people here that own a Wii will be getting one of the two, or both, but is it possible in our profiles to add fields for these game codes alongside our Wii friend code?
On that note, I haven't picked up a copy yet, but I will soon.
@Trowble (XBL/PSN):
Yes theres an addtional code but, unlike Smash its not so much a problem as you can invite people who you have as console friends to the game.
If my memory serves me correct, it only takes one invite too.
Both my MKWii Code and Wii Code are in my profile, but I'll post them here nonetheless for easy access.
