Mario Kart Wii is Live, Who's Playing?

Mario Kart Wii, the other half of our nonstop new release blitz for the past month, releases today, too. So all is not GTA IV. If any of you backsliding heathens skipped church to snag your copy, assuming ya don't have blue laws forbidding the sale of video games 'afore 1 pee em in your county, let us know what you think in the comments.

For those who've been consumed by all things Niko and Liberty City, you can see what the fuss is at the following links.

  • My brother called me tonight and said he picked it up, I sold my Wii ages ago

  • Getting it as soon as GameStop opens!

I could have gotten it at Nintendo World yesterday, but I didn't have any money at the time. I did get all this neat swag though.

  • There is something besides GTAIV? what? *confused*

  • For once those of us in Europe get a game early! I've had it for a couple weeks now and am really enjoying it. The Wii Wheel takes a bit of getting used to but ends up becoming second nature. And the online actually kind of works! In a Nintendo game! Yeah, its a great game.

  • I've been playing it non-stop all weekend.

I can barely lift my arms now.

  • Meh. Too amped for tomorrow night to care about Mario and kiddy Karts! Give me a Banshee, then maybe we'll talk.

  • I've been playing it since last week (EU) and loving it. If anyone wants to play, 1805-2434-0532 is my code.

  • @Moridin:

Well, aren't you all grown up then.

And why do you want a 1990s-era 3dfx video card?

  • I'm holding out two days to run over pedestrians rather than fling turtle shells at monkeys today.

  • been playing it for weeks!
Strange saying that....Usually the EU waits months to play things the US have :(

  • Haha, Owen's tags are great.

  • @Hyperfludd:

Hopefully I'll be off to New York later this year, so if you walk by Nintendo World and there are police men forcing a tall guy out onto the streets because of his refusal to leave the store after 3 days of nonstop cheerful yelling... well, then that might be me.

  • @Marlor: I was referring to a car in the GTA series. Haha.

My previous comment was just fueled by GTA-hype, and I guess I came off sounding like an ass, but don't get me wrong. I will be picking up Mario Kart Wii eventually, and meant nothing against the game. I've loved the series since the original.

  • I have a small space in my gaming heart for this franchise but at this point I don't see myself playing much of anything Wii related for a long time. GTA IV is really gonna put a hurtin on this game. Why you ask? lol
because You can have races in a NYC theme sandbox plus you can actually shoot out of your windows and/or run people over. Ummm, what does that say about us, right? lol Sorry MK i'll be picking you up on the used bin a a few minths when I can return you if I don't like you anymore....lol
    Peace Out my homie

  • @Vetterli: I live a couple of blocks from Nintendo World and it is pure fun. The problem is that I'll go in and just find myself picking up a Zelda hoody, Old School gamer shirts, or NES underwear for no reason. I actually grew up a Sega fanboy, but Nintendo World has done its job and made me look like a Nintendo one.

@Moridin: Owen posted the article saying 11 ways to tell you're not hardcore. One of them should be you can't enjoy MarioKart or other great titles because you mistakenly believe that hating them makes you mature. Or maybe that should be on a personality disorder list of some sort. I honestly believe that no few real adults have that opinion, and only teenagers and the insecure call those games "kidddie".

  • @LedRush: Read my second comment. Sarcasm is lost on the Internets, sigh.

  • @LedRush:

Agreed. I've never heard an adult call any game "kiddie".

It's a teenage thing, based on the desire to feel "grown up".

  • @Moridin:

Well, I've heard that type of comment spoken seriously while playing Halo 3 so many times that I didn't pick up on its ironical nature. While I remove you from association from my comments (with apologies), I still think that my comments validly address a widespread belief.

  • @Moridin:

Sorry for the double post, by your comment is growing on me. Those who think Halo 3 isn't immature (super high jumping, vehicles performing wildly, munchkin aliens spewing funnies) yet criticize Mario for being so are a little odd to me. But then again, I play games for fun, not for maturity.

  • @LedRush: I hear ya. It's sad, really.

As far as I'm concerned, if a game is fun and I enjoy it - I'm going to play it. Regardless of what anyone thinks.

Unfortunately, I have a few riends in that mindset that you described. Every Nintendo game, or something that "hardcore" gamers wouldn't dare play is "kiddie" and every role-playing game is "gay." All they consider "good games" are M-rated FPS's. Blegh.

  • This game has only just came out in the States? Weird.

  • @LedRush:

I plan on walking in and start picking up t-shirts, hoodies etc. for no apparent reason and when I've paid for all the merchandise and I get out on the street again I'll probably be thinking: "What the hell just happened?"
I'm a sucker for retro merchandise, so I plan on ruining myself at the Nintendo World Store... Wauw, just listen to those words "Nintendo... World... Store..." Those three words combined are like bigger, better, and stronger and Jesus and Superman combined!

  • *than Jesus and Superman combined!

Where the hell is the edit button?

  • i got this game free at
    [www.prizerebel.com]
i was so excited everyone must know

  • Mario Kart Wii is great fun. Single player 150cc and mirror wasn't nearly as unfair with the rubber banding AI as I had been led to believe. Aside from the 50% chance that a blue shell will hit you a right in front of the finish line on the final lap, followed by 1-2 red shells, as you fall from 1st to 7th, that is. >_<

Wich is annoying. But it's not *hard*, just annoying. Gold on the first try on all the cups.

Online however, is awesome in every way. \o/

  • going out to GS right now to pick it up. it's tough. i've been playing MGO all weekend so far, now i have to find time for MKWii. what's this GTAIV i keep hearing about?

  • If anybody fancy adding me, my friendcode is

    0130 1935 4860

    I've added you Alazar.

  • 5117-1268-9439-9369

Playing EU. Haven't gone much online yet, working on 150cc, but I'll add those posting here and might see you when I try online modus one of these days.

  • Picking it up at soon as my mall opens.

  • I played this in Best Buy, they had a pretty sweet setup with a huge TV, the game, and a real go-kart. I think the media has been a bit overly critical of the wheel, after racing for roughly 30 seconds I had a good feel for it. When I buy the game, I'll probably use it (on the lower CC races, at least).

  • I'll be damned, Mario Kart Wi-Fi actually WORKS. No waiting 10 minutes for a match up, at least regionally. I'm loving it so far, but the wheel is killing my arms, and I can't seem to figure out the drift boost thing. Guess I'll have to read the manual after all.

  • I'd really love to pick this up, but I can't be spending money due to me moving in (in another state) with someone special for the summer. I will be picking it up as soon as I get the chance, though. I hear good things and Mario Kart has always been a fun diversion.

  • i have had it since UK launch, and love it... BUT call me crazy.. i still love the SNES Mariokart most.. there is something about the SNES and DS versions that do it for me..

  • I'm not playing i yet. I didn't skip church.

  • @KM91:

You're posting on kotaku from church. I heard that God hates that!

  • @LedRush: You're posting on Kotaku NOT from church. I hear God hates THAT, mario kart sinner.

  • @Eclipse5:

    :)

If there was a church with Wifi, I'd be more likely to attend :)

I just got the game today and picked up an extra wheel for it. Me and my brother both agree, the Wii Wheel is really fun. It is kind of hard to get used to at first, but it's great after a while.

  • here is my friend code, though i gotta say i dont really care for the wii wheel so far.....

    1118-0629-0396

  • wow is it me or does mario kart look smoother than SSBB. no jaggies that i saw. runs at a smooth clip too with some great textures.

anyways i'm adding everyone that posted. look me up. my fc is 3780 9426 0506

  • Im not getting it....YET, Im out of money and I promised I would get GTAIV legally.

  • I got it today, very fun times. I have to admit, the GC controls are 1000 times better, but it is way too much fun to play with the wheel. I don't mind losing as long as I get to really feel like I'm rolling in Baby Peach's stroller...

  • Oddly enough, today was the first time I actually went to church in years.

  • Hello all! Game is AMAZING to say the least. Looking for peeps to play with. My codes are below!

    Mari Kart - 0387-9177-8117
    Brawl - 2062-8828-3619

  • my mario kart code is 3952 7407 3817

  • I'm pretty disappointed in how over used the power items are in this game in the grand prix. I'll have a 15 second lead then all of a sudden my screen is covered in black crap, i'm struck by lightning, and i'm being blown to hell by a blue shell, (sometimes 2 in a row even!) Not very fun.

  • @Hyperfludd: I kinda want that shirt.

I've set my goal to unlock everything in Mario Kart before GTAIV comes out. I only have a few more characters and vehicles to go!

@MisterFeeny: It's irritating, but just use the trick boosts and you boost yourself right back up for another 15 second lead...then the cycle starts over again.

  • It's probably a little late, but here's my Mario Kart Code
