Anyone picking up the monster-box Special Edition of GTA IV next week will, for their troubles, be getting themselves a copy of the game's soundtrack CD. Doesn't matter whether you like what's on it or not, you're getting it regardless, but out of courtesy you may as well know (thanks, retailers) which songs have made the cut.
Soviet Connection [The Theme From Grand Theft Auto IV] by Michael Hunter
Dirty New Yorker by Mobb Deep Feat. Havoc & Prodigy from H.N.I.C. Part 2 Sessions
No Sex For Ben by The Rapture
No Fraid A by Munga
Where's My Money by Busta Rhymes
I Want You by C.J.
Rocky Mountain Way by Joe Walsh
Stand Up Jamrock by Bob Marley & The Wailers and Damian Marley
Liberty City: The Invasion by Seryoga
Vagabond by Greenskeepers
On A Journey by Electrik Funk
Nickname by Qadir
Holy Thursday by David Axelrod
War Is Necessary by Nas
Zombie by Fela Kuti
5:23 by Global Communication

Well, it doesn't appear to touch the Vice City six disc soundtrack I own.
Pretty weak, imo. :/
I better hear some Queen when I play this game.
haha wow, global communication? i would not have expected that...
great tune from a great album, "76:14"
Wow, Mobb Deep and Nas eh? Nice to see Busta Bust on there too. The Rapture is alright, not a huuuuge fan. It's great to see Fela Kuti on there, that guy is a freaking legend.
5 words
Busta Bust, Prince of Queens.
Mobb Deep featuring themselves? Awesome.
is there a list of whats actually in the game yet?
I still hold out hope that No Sleep Till Brooklyn is in there somewhere.
I mean, it practically has to be, right?
This is what I think about the track listing.

Fela Kuti and David Axelrod=win.
Oh here.
[en.wikipedia.org]
@PatMan33: One Vision's on the soundtrack!
The radio in the game is actually quite good. As in, it has some decent music. Unlike pretty much all the others!
So no custom soundtrack on the PS3 version? Anyone?
@Madnoir:
Killing Joke, Nitzer Ebb, Steve Roach, John Coltrane, Sick Of It All, Agnostic Front, Cro-Mags, Unkle and a very good selection of Hip-Hop, Electro and pop-rock.
Not bad at all for the game soundtrack... I know I'll be rotating stations to catch certain songs.
@supercrap: Fela Kuti is indeed awesome!
@slomo788:
Well Burnout Paradise for PS3 will get custom soundtracks but that's EA I don't know if Rockstar may add it as a DLC for PS3 owners.
@zoesch: all that stuff sounds good too. Could it be that GTA finally has a hardcore station?
@slomo788: No custom soundtracks as far as I know, but that doesn't bother me. I don't want to have to fuck with the dashboard on the 360 during the game anyway. Plus, the radio in GTA has always been good. Anyone that disagrees is entitled to their opinions, but frankly, the list that we know of for IV's OST is ten times better than what you hear on the real radio every damn day. And if I get sick of it (all of it, which should take me a while...) I'll either go music-less, and enjoy the sound of the game, or I'll play music off my computer, which is where my library is stored, properly.
I don't need to fiddle with the cryptic bullshit on either system. I just need to play.
@splines:
What i should be is "No Sleep Till Broker"
Now spinning that song for Liberty Cities own self indulgence would oh so much sweeter
Que? No metal? At least three hip-hop/rap stations and no metal? I am hoping that list is incomplete, or wrong.
Oh, and as I already stated on the TUD post, I am getting the PS3 version, because custom soundtracks and undefined DLC don't break my love for the DS2/3 and frankly, the legacy for GTA on PlayStation.
@supercrap: It has a "Punk" station with Leeway, Murphy's Law, the bands I quoted and other stuff, not bad... I would've loved to see a proper NYHC and post-hardcore station with Quicksand, Handsome and Rival Schools thrown in as well.
Shame there's no metal station, there's plenty of great NY metal bands that could've made the cut, from Anthrax to Suffocation.
The rock station is weaksauce. I still remember the first time I played Vice City and Slayer came on. I went crazy.
Considering the game has 200 tracks. Shouldn't they have released several genre CDs like VC did?
@CitizenInsane27: Oh I agree. San Andreas had the best soundtrack than any videogame before it and I trust Rockstar to keep the same level of quality (just look at the reviews the game is getting). But for such a long game, even 200 songs can become not that much after a while. That's when custom soundtracks get in. Plus I'm Haitian so there are some styles that I'd like to listen to that probably won't appear in the game. Maybe I was just spoiled by the original Xbox but I LOVE playing my music in games when they involve driving, particularly GTA.
I am SOO happy to see decent music in a videogame.
David Axelrod, ftw. A blast from the past for me. (I collect records)
I appreciate that Rockstar exposes younger guys to a good cross-section of music.
OMG! San Juan Sounds! Sorry guys but im Puertorrican Im so proud that the genre of reggaeton made it into this game Fuck yeah!
[i50.photobucket.com]
@Jojuinc: Fantastic! Now if they have Death on Two Legs I'll be as giddy as a schoolgirl.
@push eject: Yeah it ranks up there in my top 10 electronic albums of all time. Too bad they don't make tunes anymore, although Tom Middleton still does.
I have always liked the GTA sound tracks since Rockstar seems to always be able to pick the right songs that add to the overall experience. I like what I have been seeing and hearing about GTA IV and can't wait till the 29th to finally experience GTA perfection.
Oh shit, Ghostface Killah's in GTA IV?! Awesome.
JNR Jazz Nation Radio and The Journey are probably going to be my stations of choice.
FELA KUTI? That rules.
I always like to hear the radio on GTA games when Im doing nothing important in the game, but I dont think I would want a CD with music that appears in GTA IV, but who knows it could be good anyway.
Man, could there be more techno/rap in this game?
I'm very sad there's no Double Clef station. Driving around in a newly stolen luxury car listening to Puccini, Verdi, and Mozart was pure class.
I guess Miles Davis and John Coltrane will have to do. =/
Ugh. What is this, 2000 again? Somebody needs to send Rockstar the memo that hip-hop isn't as popular as it once was. Please, let there be some rock or pop in the game.
Hmm... I want this.
And this is the part of the LE I don't give a shit about
Looks like this soundtrack is going to be sweet. Not getting the Special Edition, so I hope whoever does at least enjoys the CD. Pop it in your car and pretend you're Niko!
Vice City had the best soundtrack of all GTA games. They just captured the 80s, just like everything else in the game did.
I have never been interested in the GTA soundtrack. My main interest are the hilarious radio shows and commercial breaks.
@Pinhead: Agreed.
I bought the Vice City soundtrack boxset and although I've only ever listened to the first 3 CDs, those tracks are always being played on my iPod. Great selection of 80's music for someone who's too young to remember that decade.
Wow. So glad i didn't get the limited edition. I'm not saying it's bad music but when i look at a cd and the only thing on it that i like and recognize is Bob Marley then it's a bad cd.
Please let there be some rock. Please? I don't want to be fucking around with custom soundtracks.
@Magic Emperor Anima: Or, dont't! Fr the love of all that is gaming don't do it! Our reputation is bad enough as it is!
Well I for one am glad it has Fela Kuti and the Rapture.
Not going to complain how it doesn't have metal or 80's music like everyone else seems to be doing. Like those two are the only genres of music that games should have :V
The Vice City soundtrack saved my life. It has small hands, but managed to pull me aside as the train came rushing towards me.
Did anyone notice "I Want You" - C.J.?
Is that C.J. from San Andreas? That would be pretty solid.
Fela Kuti's Zombie is my cell's ringtone. Whenever I used to play Fela Kuti on my radio show in college, people used to call in and respond how much they loved it. I hope his exposure in GTA will give him the credit he deserves.
@dead_red_eyes: Will The Journey actually be playing Journey? If thats the case then fuck the rest of the soundtrack i'll be finding a way to listen to that and just that song.
Well, I'm guessing I'm going to be listening to the Classic Rock station a lot, most of the other stuff just doesn't appeal. Much like most of the San Andreas soundtrack.
Vice City was just sublime though.
I see someone is a big ELO fan though - first Four Little Diamonds, now Evil Woman!
I don't know 90% of those bands/musicians.
Is this really all techno and hip pop? hip hop, pop, whichever.
@Lixie: Actually, if you look at the top 20 albums of 2007
7 were hip-hop
3 were rock
2 were Hannah Montana
2 were Country
1 was a compilation
1 was a Disney album
And the remaining four are a bit mixed. But Hip-Hop is as popular as it ever was. More so, even.
Cool thanks for this post luke! really wanted to know what was on the ST thats why.
Shame about all the rap, but the Joe Walsh track is a pleasantly unexpected addition.
I've held the (still-sealed) special edition of the game, and it's heavier than you'd expect.
Nothing manmade will ever sniff the win that was Vice City's soundtrack.
Not very impressed with what's on the soundtrack but am guessing they're holding off on the really, really good songs for the game and for paid downloads through that Amazon scam. Anyone know who the DJs are this time around?
@RocketSauceJosh:
Was wondering the same thing, "Is that a real artist, or an SA reference?"...
I just had a look on the list of radio stations, artists and DJs on the Wikipedia page linked by @Madnoir and I'm stunned. They've got Lagerfeld, Juliette Lewis and even Iggy Pop as DJs? I already knew about LCHC and was really looking forward to this station, but the other one's listed there seem to be just as great. Imagine rasing hell while Count Basie's April in Paris is played in the background - this might get pretty surreal.
For those who missed it, the entire soundtrack was posted earlier. Here it is again: [en.wikipedia.org]
The Electro station has a great tracklist! I'll probably switch between that and the Hardcore station, depending on my mood. The Rock station has some pretty good tracks, too.
I could have made with some more metal as well...
I'll definitely listen to Iggy and hope for some Queen and Sabbath.
\../,
Ghostface Killa aside, the exclusion of Shaolin and the resultant lack of more Wu-Tang tracks in this game is going to be a crying shame. Unless, of course, that "new city DLC" thing pans out to be true and it contains both.
Big shame it doesn't include all 200 songs, that'd be epic.
