Sega Superstars Tennis Double Faults At Retail, Now Just $19.99

Sega Superstars Tennis 2? Hahahahaha! That's a good one! With the game just five weeks old in North America, GameStop is already slashing prices on Sega and Sumo Digital's Sonic-filled answer to Mario Tennis, with Sega Superstars Tennis bottoming out at $19.99 USD for the Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2. The Nintendo DS version? Just $14.99 USD.

If you're in need of a GTA IV hype deflection shield or you're now willing to bite at this price—even I am, despite my bitterness about a lack of Space Harrier or Cosmic Smash Guy—you can pick it up in-store or online as of right now.

  • If only it had Mario in it, it wouldn't matter how shitty it was.

  • There was actually a fun Space Harrier game in SST - so it had some presence.

  • Only twenty dollars? Well, it got at least decent reviews, and Beat's in it, so it has something going for it.

I'll pick it up for my Wii. Wouldn't hurt to have another Wii game.

  • If it had a Phantasy Star Online court I would have bought it full price. Instead Sega just threw in Characters they haven't payed any attention to except once or twice on the Dreamcast.

  • Pretty Reasonable I'd say.

  • I...paid....$50 for it!!......$50!!!

I wish I had a portal gun so I could shoot it between two corners and kick my own ass!

  • Hm... I'm... considering it just to have as a back up party game for my Wii... but... Nah not right now.

Still, not a bad price. Just... eh.

  • I advise anyone who likes fun, quirky games to get this. As well as any Sega fans. This game is really good.

  • Wow, I was just considering getting this for the Wii. The reason I was hesitating was because you just know Nintnedo is eventually going to get it's thumb out of its ass and release Wii Mario Tennis.

  • dam, i spent 30 on this just last week, this is a great game, like mario tennis fun.

  • Yes, they could have gone some great places with characters and didnt. Also you'd think the controls would be better given the close relation to VirtuaTennis (which really started it all). Granted different developers. And ya, Cosmic Smash? Duh...

  • When I waltzed into my GameStop and was greeted with this news, I instantly purchased it for the 360. I had gotten the DS version for free as a promo and thought it was good, and wanted to get my hands on the 360 version.

A very good buy for $20, especially for fans of Mario or Virtua Tennis...

  • I just went and picked this up today. My buddy has it and said it was pretty good. Plus $20 is a pretty good price.

  • I tried the demo... for about 5 minutes, and turfed it. :/

I expected a mediocre tennis game with sweet Sega skins, but I found the input extreeeeeemely laggy and unresponsive compared to any other tennis game I tried.

But what really got my interest piqued was the "hype deflection shield" comment - that's a great idea! How about a "hyper hype" or "uber hype" etc... tag for games like Halo, SSBB, GTA IV, etc that get a half dozen stories a day? That would let people skip the way overhyped games, and optionally dig back through the archive and look at all the most anticipated titles at will!

  • STILL not worth it...

    gameplay still sucks...

unless there's download patch to fix the button assignment...

  • Yeah i played the demo to this and thought i sucked ass. Especially with no Virtua Fighter characters. Try harder, Sega.

  • awesome, will pick it up now (really just for the JSR stuff) should i get the Wii or PS3 version?

  • Hmm, at 20 bucks, this may be worth is just so I can play as Ulala (Space Channel 5) and Beat (JSR).

  • For 20 bucks I'll pick up the Wii Version, which I heard was actually pretty good.

  • It's a decent game especially for $20. One thing that bothered me about it though is on some courts the frame rate drops. Throws you off when it's 60 fps the rest of the time. The Eggman court is especially annoying cause on one side the fps drops cause of the Eggman hologram while your opponent gets 60 fps playing the other side.

  • It's actually a fun little tennis game with some unexpected technique. The controls do take time to get used to and there are definitely times where you can swear you pressed the button but Amigo just stood there with that stupid grin on his face. The AI is often questionable, too. Alex Kidd is absolutely horrible and somehow manages to hit the ball even if he is in another time zone.

On a nitpick level, there's some questionable design decisions. Any and all references to House of the Dead have been unceremoniously titled Curien Mansion, the Outrun stage is missing the actual star of the game (the car), the Jet Set Radio crew lack their unique cel shading, and it doesn't go deep enough into Sega's library. Virtua Fighter, Phantasy Star, hell, even Congo Bongo would have been interesting.

Having said all that, it is fun and definitely radiates a sort of Dreamcast-era vibe. The puyo-pop minigames are fun, most of the music has been nicely ripped from previous Sega games, and, as stated, once you get over the sludge-like handicap, you can use it to your advantage to run faster and pull off short hits and lobs.

Without the Sega nostalgia, the game really wouldn't be much. With it, though, and it's not a bad start. Ignoring why the game was made in the first place, most of the game was done right. You genuinely get the feeling that someone on the development team was a big Sega fan and really put his or her heart into the project despite having to make some odd concessions. The game probably should have been released at $20. If you need something to keep you occupied for a while, you could do a whole lot worse with $20.

  • I love it, absolutely love it.

The mini-games (which I consider the actual game) are way too much fun.

Plus, I like all of the Sega characters as opposed to Nintendo where I only like a small handful. They all have a unique charm.

The demo (for 360) does it absolutely no justice. It's almost as if the controls between the two are different. I played the demo and hated it. Had a free rental at Hollywood Video and it was the only new release they had, brought it home and fell in love.

I'm telling you guys, I think she's the one!

  • My kid likes the demo. Consider it bought.

  • I wouldn't even keep this game if it were given to me for free. It would be a shame to have it sitting in my dvd rack.
I've played the demo too, btw, so I'm not just saying this out of pure ignorant hatred.

  • Note to Sega:
Nobody cares about your characters. Nobody.

  • There's a chance I might bite. It looked fun to me.

    @MikeTheSpike: I do . . .

  • Ulala's presence alone is worth the price, even if they didn't get Apollo Smile to reprise her voice work. It may be the closest to Space Channel 5, Part 3 I'll ever get.

Writing that last line made me really sad. :(

  • By the way, why isn't there a PSP version? Why do all systems but one?

  • This seems to be a recurring theme with many of Sega's games. Wait a little over a month and the price drops to $29 or $19. I've been burned before by this myself... so now I rarely ever buy a Sega game on launch because of it.

  • I played it and liked it and at $20 it's a steal. This is a good week for games. I found Project Gotham Racing 4 for $15 at Target.

  • I've been playing the Wii version all week, and it kicks ass! There's even a Virtua Cop part.
Also Mike the Spike is a douchebag. People were going nuts when Sonic was announced for Brawl.

  • Fuck, I just bought this last week and having a BLAST.

  • @LittleBigPlaneteer:
    Mario Hotel.

Played the demo on PS3, and it was crap.

Dumbest thing is that Sega *has* a great tennis game in Virtua Tennis. I have no idea why they didn't just take the tennis engine out of that and slap some new graphics and new characters in it and call it done. No, they go and create an entirely new game with sucky ass gameplay. I mean, the characters sort of float across the court, and half the time pressing the stroke button just does nothing. And with the garish graphics, I can't even see the ball more often than not.

No thanks, I'll pass even at $19.99. I would have bought a Sega-themed tennis game if it was actually good.

  • @Shigamado: Same. :(

  • Damn. $19.99? I think that I'll buy it because Ulala's in it...and it's a Sega tennis game. It really couldn't be that bad, could it?

  • @pandafresh:

i would suggest the ps3, the wii options add little in my opinion. you don't seem to be into what the wii would add.

  • @bangbangblah: @kidnicky:

    Kay, *other* than Sonic.

And, okay, to dial down the Internet hyperbole a tad, it's not that *nobody* likes Sega characters. It's just that I'm surprised anyone thought there were enough people out there to make a venture such as this profitable.

  • Well,as for myself,I own/have owned all the games represented, with the exception of Alex Kidd. Most of my IRL friends are bigger Sega fans than they are Nintendo fans as well.

  • Waiting for Hot Shots Tennis personally.

  • Guess I'll pick it up for the Wii

    Yikes, that was fast!

The last game I can think of that plummeted that fast was Front Mission for the DS, which was a shame because that game was awesome.

  • SST is a great game if you like tennis games and/or SEGA. Definitely pick it up for $20!

  • . . . are you ******* kidding me? I just bought this new last weekend...
