The newest issue of EGM, due to arrive any minute now we hope, features more than just sexy details on Splatterhouse, it also contains rumored details on Halo developer Bungie's next project. Unsurprisingly, EGM says that it will be a shooter set in the Halo universe, with a move to a third-person perspective and a setting that predates the original Halo.
The enigmatic Quarterman writes that "WETA is definitely involved in some capacity" and that we might hear more about Bungie's post-Halo 3 work as early as November, officially.

Milked
They need to sell 360's somehow after Gears
and here i was thinking that the reason they split from microsoft was so they could try something new
Ah, time to test out the franchise.
Ten to one people drastically won't give a shit about it since it will stop emulating an FPS console counterstrike.
@=O: Yeah. Wtf?
I'm actually intrigued.
I'd like to see the beginning of the War between earth and the Covenant. Maybe it will have to do with an earlier version of the Spartan Program.
As long as it has a better final boss than Halo 3, I'll be happy.
Refreshing.
As I was first reading it, I was really, really, hoping that it might be something aside a shooter. Like, a downloadable game, where you raised Master Chief from kid to adult, via a Tamagotchi style interface. But then I see the First Person Shooter part, and sigh in disappointment.
@HomerSapien: How?
It's Halo! Again!
Oh look, they're wringing out the Halo series like a wet sponge.
Nobody called that one, Did anyone notice how Halo 2ish Halo 3 was? It'll be the Madden of FPS in another decade or so.
So much for doing something different. yuck.
Anyone shouting "MILKED" is an idiot.
Also everyone crying about it's FPS viewpoint can't read. Clearly stated it's moving to a 3rd person point.
I for one, welcome another Gears of war game with master chief copy and pasted over Marcus Fenix.
Halo 3 is THE single most overrated game of all time.
Interesting if they take it to Spartan Training and follow into the first contact (i.e. the first book).
Gameplay would be different because (and correct me if I'm wrong) without the suit weighing them down the Spartans were genetically spliced to be very fast and very strong.
@TheCleaningGuy: Hmm? there was a Boss? I dont remember any bosses in Halo, well except for 2 where you kill the white furry guy that was pretty awesome.
It didn't exactly take Nostrodamus to see this coming.
If you say your going to do something different, and not do anymore Halo, well then do it.
But other than that, there's potential for it to be great. So that's exciting.
Love to see how everyone is writing this off already....
There are series still around that have been milked to the bone, most notably every major Nintendo franchise.
I've always wanted a 3rd person halo ever since toting around the flamethrower/minigun :D
Oh, geez, I entirely missed the Third Person thing first reading it. Wonder how /that/ will work out. Got me curious now.
Hey, maybe for once, they could do a simultaneous release to the PC along with any consoles. You know how like, Halo 1 was supposed to go on PC (which while it finally did, was too late to mean anything).
They mention WETA, so I don't think this is Bungie's next game. I think they'll play a collaborative role, maybe fine tune the shooter aspects.
Isn't this Peter Jackson game supposed to mostly be about drama and interactivity. Well I think a switch to third-person helps that, and the time line couldn't be more intriguing.
Bungie will do something new and different, I promise, as have they in numerous updates.
Calm people, we already know that WETA and Bungie are working together and Bungie is doing their own thing, why else would they be hiring like crazy?
why do people trash bungie for making 3 halo games and do not trash square for milking FF in any way possible? it's a good franchise and the games are of good quality! what's wrong with making another good game even if it's in the same universe as the last 3?
come on! Enough with Halo already, do something new
So the rumor is they're working on the game they were (almost) originally working on?
Sounds cool, but I thought they wanted to move onto other franchises?
@Cheesemage: Article says 3rd-person, not 1st-person.
But it still sounds like a shooter, which is a disappointment. I was thinking if Bungie stayed in shooterville they would at least lose the Halo universe. Either that or stay within Halo but switch genres (bring back Myth? Hello?!). This has troubling similarities to a Halo 4, albeit a prequel.
Not like I wouldn't be all over that, but I had hopes for something new, as well. Time will tell.
Hmm...so Microsoft owns "Halo", so is this going to be done in conjunction with them or is it just set in the Halo/Marathon/PiD world that Bungie has going?
If they're going to do this I hope they pay more attention to the backstory and actually get some plot going this time.
@ViperTooth:
So you're saying Halo hasn't been milked? Because uh, you're the idiot if you don't think it has been
@Cheesemage: It's not a first-person shooter. It says third-person action/shooter hybrid.
I must say, if this is true, color me a bit disappointed. Bungie, fresh off making three Halo games as part of the MGS stable, part ways with Microsoft to make... another Halo game for Microsoft?
Wake me up when Insomniac sever their working relationship with Sony to pursue making Ratchet & Clank titles for the Playststion 3.
is it possible for bungie to make an Oni sequal on the ps3 or 360 i say ps3 because first Oni was a ps2 game.
and it will be only for the PS3
[insert evil laugh here]
Didn't they all say they loved Halo but were fed up with it? I guess they aren't fed up of money.
Prequel? Do we get to play as the coolest Sgt in the universe? Because everyone wants to be Sgt Johnson. He knows what the LAAAAAAADIEEESSS like.
Someone should make a list of Quartermann rumors from the last 3 years and see how many of them have actually proved to be true ...
Are They gonna release it on more than the 360 cause if not then why did they split up from microsoft? Hope that
A)Its Good
B)Its on more than just 360 (PS3)
@henri1kk:
Pretty sure Squeeniz gets trashed all the time for their FF milking.
@LittleBigPlaneteer:
There have been 3 Halo games in 7 years. And those are the only 3 ever.
So how do you define 'milking'? I'm being serious here, not facetious.
@wild homes: I know, right? Bungie was talking about how they wanted to break off from Microsoft so they can become independent and start doing their own thing.... and that thing turns out to be another Halo game.
It's not surprising, but it is disappointing. Bungie needs to branch out a bit. Why go independent and continue the IP that your former owners "tied you down" with?
@ShirtGuyDom: I don't know why, but comments of the history of the game in this vague form come off sort of snotty. I'm sure you didn't mean to, but it's something to open my comment, while I'm hear.
I'm intrigued by the possibility of opening up the universe even more.. But it seems to me that Bungie can't make up their minds. Or they're playing their cards with absolutely no risk at all.
@Blake Ruff: That honor would go to Killzone: The Halo Killer. Ever good videogame franchise gets milked. Just look at how many versions of metal gear have been released in the 6 years since the first Halo, or how many Mario spinoffs have been released in the same time frame. Yet only 3 Halo games. Quit being a fanboy and do something productive with your life other than trolling for your concole of choice.
@LittleBigPlaneteer: it was just an example.. nobody says "kojima, get a life and move away from MGS.. it's getting sour" but they somehow feel the need to trash bungie for (reportedly) making a 4th halo project.. i, for one, think the halo games are great and am anxiously awaiting the next game!
Might not have the same impact since Master Chief will be absent. Ill be looking forward to more information on the game, but personally I dont like prequels as you already know the ending of the story. Not to mention innovation is hampered, by following the rigid time line you can't suddenly have new weapons, enemies, or tech. Who knows it might be cool to early to tell.
@Salen: Sgt. Johnson as a Spartan I would be awesome.
When someone says universe (or "the" universe), it brings to thought something bigger then us, something, unknown, something we exist in, something unexplored. A statement like "My Universe" gives us perspective from a personal point of view into the very nebulous concept of the universe.
When Bungie says they a making a spin-off based on the Halo universe, I don't think "milked" or "...gota sell more games..." (seriously, no duh!), or even "why did they want to take a break from halo". I think as to what they would probably be doing and the mind boggles! The closest thing to mind is Marathon but they've already said that that though there's overlap, they are two different universes so I don't know; they've broken cannon before but nothing of this level so it's hard to say.
There's lots to be excited about here folks. You can hate M$ all you want and the XRROD60 too but don't start loosing your sense of wonder and imagination to hate. Seriously, this is Bungie; these guys respect their lore and deliver very solid experiences. They've earned my respect and I guess that counts. I'm looking forward to see what they do even if this is just a rumor.
@DARTH_TIGRIS:
They have like 3 or 4 more projects on their way. The fact is, they made Halo 3 as sort of a finale to the series. Hence the "Finish the fight" tagline. But it's such a huge goldmine for Microsoft that they are ensuring that such a franchise doesn't die.
So instead of making a Halo 4, they are finding other ways of making Halo games. This is what I deem as milking a cow. A cash cow:
Halo Wars
Halo Chronicles
Halo 3rd person game?
and who knows what else
@LittleBigPlaneteer: Milked in a marketing and hype sense, but it's only been 3 games so far. I mean theres more than 10 MGS games, what... 16 zeldas? Dragon Quests, etc.
I don't like Halo, I think the series lost it after the 1st game, when it just was one disappointment after the other. Halo Wars is looking like crap, but the rumored game doesn't sound that bad though....
@LittleBigPlaneteer: 3 games is hardly milking a franchise...yet. Shall I bring up, FF, almost any Nintendo title, Madden, Mortal Kombat, Tony Hawk, Dragon Quest, Grand Theft Auto and many, many more titles with sequels bordering on (or exceeding) double digits?
Besides, since the game is a prequel set before the events of Halo, none of the ringworlds have been discovered yet. Couple that with a third-person perspective, and it seems more likely that the game will be set in the same universe as the Halo franchise, but could go any number of different directions. And you can bet with WETA's hands on it, it's going to have a very different feel. Master Chief could easily be relegated to a cameo at best.
Writing it off at this stage is, well, ignorant, and reeks of anti-Halo fanboyism.
And here we all thought Bungie was going to move away from doing Halo games after the left Microsoft.
I guess Halo is all they know, now.
Halo in a 3rd person view?
Ill buy it.
I hate FPS games..
