We already know that over 65% of PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers play on an HDTV. But we didn't know that 18% of HDTV watchers played Xbox 360 or PS3.
That stat was compiled over HDTV sales from only the last year, but the trend is contributed to the falling prices of HDTVs, allowing more of the 21-34 demographic to purchase sets—precious souls between 21-34 want to play their games in HD. And by "HD," we mean "huffing daffodils." It's the only way we'll play anymore.

Then there are the people like me who don't have an HDTV...sigh.
Well i bought my HDTV last year because i wanted HD content..... but of course now that i have it, i had to buy a 360 :oP
That is awesome. I bought my HDTV just because it was time to move on, I actually prefer playing my 360 on my monitor.
I know people who bought an HDTV for their Wii. And all they play is Wii Sports. [Insert obvious jokes here.]
@Karazzin: I'm with ya brother.
I have my 360 hooked up to my monitor. Poor man's HD :P
I bought my HDTV for my Xbox 360. Of course, I now have Digital Cable with HD channels and all of that other good stuff, but the impetus of my purchase was the HDTV.
I bought an HDTV last year for my 360 and I can't even figure out how to get the HD working lol.
I bought my HD tv for my ps3. Didnt see the point in owning a 360 or a ps3 without an hdtv (aside from using a monitor, thats just as good but I wanted 55 inches!)
Seriously though, if you dont intend on using your monitor, buy a HDTV first then go get your HD consoles otherwise you are missing out, andm ore likely to spend that HDtv money on 60 dollar games. HDTV's be cheap these days yo! my 55incher cost 1500 last year, they are way cheaper now!
I knew I should've played Bioshock on my friend's HDTV. Damn I'm always behind.
@Crash McCloud: Connect it to your tv through componant or hdmi (if you got a newer 360) then goto settings and tell it to do 720p or 1080i, whichever your tv supports better
I'm not surprised, this is one of the reasons I want an HDTV. Holy crap, I am like everyone else!
I bought my HDTV for two reasons.
1) Time to get rid of my old TV for a HD one.
2) I got it for my Xbox 360.
I'm not gonna lie...I knew Bioshock would DEMAND a high definition television. So, I went out and splurged on a 42" Pioneer Kuro set right before the game came out. Am I a lunatic? Yes.
I definitely bought my first HDTV (720p) for 360 gaming, figuring that I would also be getting the PS3. After getting the PS3, I got more and more into Hi Def video and upgraded to a 1080p TV for optimal Blu-Ray watching.
That's the most hideous Splicer I've ever seen...
A big, high-quality HDTV makes a huge difference in your gaming experience.
Who cares if I'll be paying my TV off for 3 years? :P
@Crash McCloud:
All you have to do is this.
If you TV has component (Which if HD it should), and plug them up. Then at the end of the wire plug (that connects to the Xbox move the switch there to HDTV.
Then go the system blade in your 360. Go to the display settings. Then set you TV at a higher display ration. Like 720 or 1080. Then made sure you TV is set at the right ratio. Make sure it is set to wide screen (if it didn't do it already).
Your done! Wow....I had that memorized. Not sure if I should be proud of disappointed in myself. haha
huffing daffodils? wtf
I bought my HD Tv after I played Dead Rising on my Xbox 360, if you ever played the game on a normal Tv then you know about the tiny letters the game would show on the screen. My old Tv was also about 14 years old and spending my hard earned money on a big TV was a logical conclusion...
I got mine for my PS3. 500 dollar TV and it cost me 320 because it was the display model at Wal-Mart. Has HDMI hook up and it works perfectly fine. One of the best purchases I've made.
30 Inch as well.
Yup we got 3 HDTVs in my house one is dedicated solely for gaming. ^_^
@Pezdispenser:
Fruicci Splicers are dangerous! Make sure that you research them to earn extra bonus points.
I got mine for my 360. 42'' of 1080p goodness, properly calibrated and looking sweet as a nut.
Still have no plans to get Sky HD, and probably won't use it for anything other than the 360 for some time.
40 Inch JVC here...
its like the son I have yet to have...
<_<;
I got my HD for my gaming, exactly like the article says. One of the greatest decisions I've made in a while since all the consoles look super sexy in all the HD glory. I'm sure everyone will agree that the 360 and PS3 look absolutely gorgeous when connected via HDMI.
Well mine was 50/50 for gaming & movies, but the gaming's still in there. Then again, with little in the way of HD broadcasting in the UK, I think gaming is probably the medium which gives HD the most justification at the moment, per household.
And people still don't want to count hdtvs as a cost in the whole pc gaming v. console gaming cost comparison thing.
I'm part of the 18% that bought my HDTV LCD for pretty much just video gaming and Blu Ray movie watching. I never did intend to hook it up to a HDTV box nor any premium services. The only subscription service I'm in right now is Xbox Live. Since then, I just can't watch any regular CRT TVs, man they just don't compare at all.
I bought my HDTV because I knew I wanted to buy a PS3. I hardly ever watch TV. Come to think of it, I should porbably just cancel my satellite tv service...
I kind of did it the other way around. I was already in the market for an HD set, and 360/PS3 were just kind of a blip on the radar...after I got the HD set though and saw the difference, I had to get in on it, so bought a 360 a month or so after :P
I kinda bought my (cheap $700) 1080i HDTV for video games... but the most inportent reason why, was that my main TV was about to die and was making weird hissing noises, shutting off and turning back on when you slapped the front of the set, and most of all randomly switching from a ugly yellow tint on the screen... i figured i save my money and buy a new TV, before my old one killed me in a fire... and since i was buying a new one, might as well get at least a 32inch 1080i HDTV with a bunch of inputs and it has to kick ass for a cheap HDTV, seeing as I will keep the TV for 10, and maybe 20 years...
I think it's pretty sad that the only reason I have a HDTV right now is so I can play next gen games.
It's why I've got one. My 360 was practically in tears on the old set. It shined on my parents HD set. So once I moved out, naturally, the next step was getting my own HD set. They are now united in perfect HD harmony.
I huff 46 inches worth of daffodils every day. Totally worth the addiction.
I bought my HDTV for Halo 3. And now I use it for Food Network HD.
Ibought my HDTV on sale 4 months before 360 launch because I wanted it for the 360. So when I got a good deal, I jumped on it.
Now that I have it, I am glad I have it for TV and movies, but the games were the primary motivator.
Gotta wonder how the question was asked. I suspect that quite a few people may think playing PS2 on an HDTV qualifies as "HD Gaming."
I used to play my 360 thru my pc monitor, but when I actually saw Gears of War running in HD I
bought a lovely HDTV the very next day.
Now I want a bigger one.
I bought my HDTV for Gears of War.. ironically on release date I had the game and the HDTV, but the console was still in for repair..
I'm about to buy my second HDTV, and it is all for gaming. Now I have an HDTV for the 360 and one for the PS3 that should be on the way soon.
I bought mine with gaming in mind, did a lot of research into what would be a good one for gaming (image quality, input lag, game mode, lots of inputs, etc.)
Pio Kuro 5080HD FTW :-D
@Karazzin:
Not necessarily. I had once since 2002 and I upgraded to LCD last year (XBR40, whereas my old one was a 1080i Samsung CRT).
I had been wanting an HDTV for a while. Two things sealed the deal:
1) Xbox 360
2) My wife and I were working at Sony at the time, and we got $1000 off the TV
@Lou3000:
Separate rooms or just plain crazy?
Bought my Sammie 4061F 1080P from Amazon which was $400 cheaper than Best Buy. I absolutely love it and wife now plays Brain Challenge with me on the 360.
Yep. Exactly why I bought an HDTV. I honestly don't see anything spectacular in regular DVD movies vs. HDTV movies. There IS a difference, but bah.
Now, the diff between standard gaming vs. hdtv gaming is a mile apart.
The guy I was renting my spare room too moved out, took his old 36" TV with him.
And I'll be damned if I was going to buy a standard def screen. $1700 was a small price to pay for an electronic device that I would use the hell out of.
I had bought a 40" Sony Bravia HDTV back in November, and then I got a PS3 in December. I fell in love with them both, but some douchebag broke into my apartment back in March and stole both of them, along with all my video games and my Wii. Fortunately, they didn't get my PS2, so I've reverted to playing some awesome PS2 games I've never played before.
I was actually sort of the other way around. I purchase and HDTV because I needed a new TV. I then bought a 360 because I wanted to take advantage of that HDTV.
That's weird, it was 100% at my house.
need to upgrade but still have fun with my 19 incher
my tv's ok too
I got my HDTV just for gaming although now I'm considering expanding to HD cable.
I bought my PS3, and convinced my wife to upgrade to a 46" LCD 1080p wall mount unit.
Would have went bigger, but I have a small house and the wall it was to be mounted on really wouldn't have fit it. Would have been hanging over the window trim on one side.
I'm jumped on somewhat early and paid $1200 for a 32" LCD widescreen 720p Samsung. Now I get get a larger, 1080p HDTV for just a couple hundred more :-(
I bought my HDTV for gaming. After playing Assassin's Creed on an SDTV what choice did I have?
Those letters who friggin' unreadable, half the time I was trying to figure what the fook I was supposed to be doing.
The only downside is that being stuck here in the middle of nowhere, I have no HD channels. So, SDTV sucks hard on and HD set. But...you give some you get some.
I know I did! Got a 360 few years back, but had a tiny little TV that was going bad. That December I picked up a nice 1080p Samsung DLP, 56" for under 2 grand. It also helped me get a credit score, which in turn helped me get a new car. So the moral of the story is, that without gaming, I don't know how I'd get to work!
I got mine for my PS3 at the same time
@droopy: Because you dont NEED it like you need a monitor, my 360 works just fine on my standard tv
I certainly bought mine for gaming i don't even have HD cable, not really taking advantage of my HDTV but im fine with HD gaming and Blu Ray for now.
I waited and saved, as I didn't want a next gen system without HDTV or vice versa. I now have a 46" 1080p TV I refer to as "my boyfriend." I am unashamed.
I am firmly in the 82% on this one.
Why is Cheeburga in Bioshock?
That's at least a higher percentage than the people who bought HDTV's but don't know how to use them... I hope.
I bought my HDTV for my PS3/360. So I guess that places me in the 18%.
I just picked up a 61" DLP LED TV pretty much exclusively for playing my 360 on and eventually the PS3 I am going to get when MGS4 releases. My god it's beautiful can't wait to go home and look at it some more...
