Final Fantasy IV DS To Europe This Summer

The 3D remake of what I consider to be the second best pre-CD era Final Fantasy games is heading to Europe this summer. Final Fantasy IV DS adds a layer of 3D shine to the characters many of us have known for years as 2D sprites, bringing Cecil, Kain, Rosa, and that damn spoony bard to life like never before. I wish they could be more specific than Summer 2008 for the Euro release, but with it heading stateside on July 22nd I am sure European fans will have it around that date, one way or another. To commemorate this vague release window, Squeenix gives you many pictures to print out and tape to your DS so you can pretend you're from the future.

Story

Four elemental Crystals, each possessing the awesome power, lie scattered throughout the realm. However, men are quick to covet things which offer strength, and easily corrupted by the might which they possess...

Seduced by the promised power of the Crystals, the kingdom of Baron begins employing unprovoked force to seize them from peaceful nations. The dark night Cecil - Lord Captain of Baron's elite force, the Red Wings - is ordered by his king to obtain the Crystals, but soon begins to question the monarch's motives.   • I've been making my way through the Japanese version. This is my favorite title of all times. Highly anticipating purchasing the English version.

  • I had a quick go of the Jap. version. Absolutely solid remake. Definitely grabbing it.

  • I really should go though the game once it comes out.
    I mean, I started it.... never finished the SNES one... you know, like all final fantasy game.

    Actually, I have never finished ONE Final Fantasy.

    I have started: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, X-2, 12, Tactics, But I have NEVER finished one. Haha.

    I REALLY wanted to finish 9 though, but I lost the last disk. Oh well.

  • I'm sorry, when you said it was the best pre-CD FF of all time, you mistakenly misspelled "Final Fantasy VI." Don't worry - I know you guys can't catch every mistake!

  • @Kaemon: I've never finished one either. It's sad, really. I was so close to beating X before my data got wiped.

    I guess buying this wouldn't be a bad idea, since I'm barely doing anything with my DS besides using it as an alarm clock.

  • FF2 (4j) was my first FF experience. Really enjoyed it on the SNES. These new character designs look great. Not sure if I'm up for another playthrough unless the gameplay has some new tweaks to offer.

  • @Kaemon: Sounds familiar - while I've completed a couple so far (10 and Tactics Advance), I *really* struggled through the final quarter (or so) of these games, not due to the difficulty level, but more to the sheer boredom, which I don't seem to get playing other JRPGs.

  • I've completed 7, Tactics advance, Crystal choronicles:rings of fate, and fff:chocobo tales (if that's even considered a FF game). Took me damn long the first time I played FF7 though. I think it was about 2 years later before I completed it.

    Started 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10 and Tactics. But I don't think I'll ever complete them :(

  • @liquid_kore: It had a very good story, interesting characters, plus probably some of the most memorable music in Final Fantasy.

  • I beat the first boss on final fantasy 3 and gave up on the rest.

  • I'm playign through FFVII at the moment and trying to finish it before GTA get delivered, I've just hit on disc 2 and am currently in some ice caves and I've knocked down some big icicles that I assume I'm about to use as platforms. How much longer do you think it'll take to finish it? Please don't spoil to story of it for me, I'm getting quite involved.

    As for how many Final Fantasy titles I've completed, let's see. I've finished 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, Tactics, and the FF7 Compilation Games, Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core.

    Gotta get back in gear and beat the remaining older ones.

    On point: Love the game, and I am looking forward to this release. It seems that Square has hit on the perfect formula, and that is to make me keep buying the same damn games over and over until I die or they stop making new systems, which ever occurs first.

  • This was was probly my 2nd fav 2d FF. The first being FF6(jp). Now thats a game i wish the would redo in 3d. Like juice up the graphics to current gen standards and release on ps3/360. They would sell a ton cause its one of the best story and gameplay wise out of the FF series.

    They actually lopped a huge chunk of story/area from the original SNES release and have re-introduced it into this version. You probably want to check it out just for that.

  • @Sinharvest: The only FF with interesting gameplay is FF II. Too bad it was too hardcore for FF fans.

  • There were lots and lots of hidden passages in FFIV. I'm wondering how its going to be in the 3D.

  • @ReaveT: Naw, the whole thing was mispelled. It's not "The best pre-cd FF game of all time is Final Fantasy IV.", it's "The best FF game of all time is Final Fantasy VI" of course!

    Now what are the odds of Square-Enix bringing the Sequel to USA?

  • @Shiryu: Well, I have high hopes for this one because it's pretty much brand new, it's going to be harder, there's going to be added story and (good or bad) your favorite characters will have voices that you can associate with them!

    I, personally, can't wait. This is one of the most memorable FFs for me. I can remember renting the game and not getting very far (just about to Fabul, or maybe up to Mt. Ordeals) before having to return it. And then later I would go on to play and beat it on two different ports (PSX and GBA). The GBA was my favorite of the two, having the ability to switch characters at the end. It's disappointing that they got rid of that aspect... Either way, I can't wait to see what they DO do with this version, and I can't wait to play through it again.

    And in line with everyone else, I've played at least one version of pretty much all FF games. X-2 is the exception, but from what I've heard, it's not that important. I've beaten I (PSX), IV (PSX &GBA), VI (SNES), VII and Tactics. And from what I've played, I think I liked the original FFIII (NES) a lot better than the DS remake. Some things that they changed made it very awkward. I didn't like having to zoom in to find hidden items and I also didn't like that they removed the ability to target a whole group of one specific monster (as opposed to strictly one or all of them). Anyway, that's enough ranting.

  • FF4 is possibly my favorite Final Fantasy (5 and 6 are up there too). I really want to lpay this. My only gripe is the model for Dark Knight Cecil. He looks so stupid. Like some bobble-head. I reallize they're trying to put a 3d spin on the old super-difformed characters and msot others look ok but Cecul just looks dumb.

    I wonder if they'll remake FF5 and 6 like this. I dread to see what they'll make Kefka look like.

  • @Kaemon: I used the DS as an alarm clock when I was studying abroad, because the thing is lod, annoying, and won't shut the heck up.
    @tk.: It's pure difficulty and uses an imbalanced "invisible stat" based class system, with a weak narrative holding it together. Very old skool RPG, if you're into that kind of thing.

    Either Square Enix is delaying recent games in the US so they can release it in Europe simultaneously, or they just come to Europe quicker because SE doesn't have to worry about and mess around with that wacky PAL format in a DS game.

    If they added the original game together with the remakes. It'd be 3-4 megs at the max and it would add infinite value to the reissue.
    And the buyer would be entitled enough to possess it now wouldn't he.

  • @emag: I've been meaning to try FFII... I didn't know until recently it was designed by Akitoshi Kawazu, creator of the SaGa series. That alone says loads.

    I've never finished an FF, either, but still trying bit by bit. The story and cutscenes are the payoff. Gameplay is the toll booth.

    But seriously - yes, they do a lot of releases. BUT - they are adding new things each time.

    This one is completely different from the ground up - the story and basic gameplay are the same, but this is truly the "ultimate" version of FFIV that has been released.

    THIS one is worth all the gil, my friend.

  • With so many games i have yet to play (and with many more coming on the horizon) i think i will manage to wait for the EU release.
