Blu-ray campers may not have as much to boast about, according to one analyst, who questions how big of a contribution the PlayStation 3 install base really is to the format. ABI Research analyst Steve Wilson says that "the state of the Blu-ray player market is not all that encouraging," according to a Next Gen report on the study.
With an estimated 85% of Blu-ray playing devices being PS3s, Wilson says that those invested in the format should maybe concerned that owners of the console may actually be playing games on it. That's clearly trolling, Steve! Are you implying there are no PlayStation 3 games?
Analyst: PS3 a Crutch to the Blu-ray Market [Next-Gen]

Uh... I guess people can't play games and watch blu-ray movies? People used PS2s and Xbox's for DVD playback how is gaming hindering movie sales especially on a new format.
Troll...
He's either trolling or he wrote the article a year ago. ;)
This is interesting to me. As a HD-DVD backer I always questioned how Blu-ray would do once the PS3 got some semi-decent games. Oh well, guess I'll sit back and wait for digital to get sorted out.
Ive got 22 games on my ps3 so im always confused by folk saying it has no games
Um, what the fuck? I'm pretty sure there's no one invested in the "format war" anymore, since HD DVD lost a long time ago. I fail to see the significance of this article.
Are we in an alternate universe? One of the biggest reasons Blu-ray won was because of the PS3 so I don't get the argument.
@Zytokis: Blu-Ray Movies'll die when Metal Gear Solid 4 Drops? OH NO!
Nah... While most people on here have fast internet, you'd be surprised how many people still get hardcopies of their multimedia rather than Digital Copies. Microsoft is correct saying Digital Acquisition is the future, but I doubt it'll be so soon.
I don't play games on my PS3. It's just a blu-ray player. My 360's get daily use for gaming and as Media Center extenders, and my Wii gets used once or twice a month when company comes over and wants to bowl.
I'm guessing this is way off base. There are probably alot of PS3's out there that are just used for blu-ray.
85%?!! That seems ridiculously far fetched. I'm listening to Pachter, nobody else! :P
Seriously though, I tend to agree that more people play games on PS3s than watch BR movies. Sure, they boost BR "player" sales by buying the PS3 and help that industry out, but that doesn't mean they want it to play BR movies especially. To me, it's a welcomed bonus, that is all.
Of course, I am more than happy about 50+GB sized games. That's what I like about the BR drive more than the actual - you know - movies.
On a general note, I can't see too many people ready to make the jump to Blu-Ray media (including HDTV and all that) if the actual discs don't go down in price. What are BR movies these days, 5 bucks on average more expensive than DVD equivalent? Yer, they offer HD & uncompressed audio, but heck - the price means a lot for somebody who collects them as he did with DVDs.
Then again, Blu-Ray is undeniably the future in disc formats, at least for now. There's just too many companies, studios and distributors backing it to not force it on the consumer sooner rather than later.
I imagine about when you see the average home desktop PC come with a Blu-Ray disc writer, you will see a ludicrous boom in anything Blu-Ray related, for obvious reasons. Even pirates need to buy their blanks.
I predicted it from day 1 : Blu-Ray is doomed, everyone knows that people buy Blu-Ray players solely to play PS3 games.
Oh, wait...
This warning came a little late, considering HD-DVD has been dead for months. Blu-ray isn't going anywhere now, and it's just going to become a more prevalent format, so... what was the point of this statement?
I am buying a PS3 for the Blu-Ray and not much else, Little Big Planet for sure but not much else, MGS too but not much else, Haze too but nothing else at all! (Killzone)
@ph15h needs followers: I bought a PS2 at launch because:
1) I love Playstation
2) Games
3) DVD player
wait aren't ps3 owners supposed to watch only movies and not play games??
There needs to be a push to lower the price on the standalone players and the discs themselves. The players are too goddamn expensive and I'd like to have a separate player instead of exclusively using my PS3.
@sh0tgunn0strils:
Hah! I see what you did there...
I own all of one Blu-Ray movie... Casino Royale. Yes, I use my PS3 for games, and pretty much only games. Sorry movie studios. >_<
I play more games on my ps3 than movies, but I have to say bluray looks amazing on my hdtv.
I have 17 Blu-rays and 8 games on my ps3, with the 14 arcade ones as well. But generally I use it for gaming and folding.
@Mini-Boss: I still think people are giving Blu-Ray a lot of credit for being greater than it is. It's really only DVD 1.5. Think about how great the jump was between VHS and DVD. I just don't get that impression from Blu-Ray. Sure, it has HD, but it's not offering much else new besides that, unlike the DVD, which kicked VHS's ass when it came out.
I have yet to insert a blu-ray movie in my PS3. My 5 mail-in blu-ray movies that were offered with the PS3 remain unopened.
Love how outlandish headlines get Analysts into the spotlight. It's a multimedia device for the love of god and will used for multiple forms of media. I watch both movies and play games depending on my mood. The thing that's holding blu-ray back IMO is not the $200 player which exists now, its the $20-$30 movies when the general consumer can get DVD's for $3-$10. Once the price gets in line, you'll see it take off. Typical S curve for new technology.
LMAO!!! Right, Steve, because as we all know, you can only do one or the other on the PS3. Doing both is impossible.
What a fucking moron.
I actually dont own a single game and only one movie for my PS3. Too poor to pay "it came out a week ago" prices for games that are more than a year old *cough*resistance*cough*. Ill be content catching up with God of War and final fantasy.
Only have one Blu Ray movie which I never got around to watching since I saw it in theaters. It was the Ballad of Ricky Bobby which actually came with the darn thing.
yes I play games on my ps3. I also buy bluray movies.
Who didn't get the memo that gamers buy more media than non gamers?
That's a silly claim. I mean I own far more Blu-ray discs than I do PS3 games and given the fact that it takes what 2+ hours at the most to watch a movie, I fail to see how that means people can't do both.
Only listen to Pachter and no one else.
This might be the dumbest analyst report I've read.
@NitrousO: Let me get this straight: you purchased the most expensive console, yet you don't have a single game for it because you can't afford to pay full price, and neither have you bought a single Blu-Ray movie.
Which begs the question: why the hell did you buy it in the first place?
I have 8 blu-ray movies for my PS3
teh analyst = FA!L
I'm not really interested in HD-DVD or Blu_Ray but I'm saddened that the movie industry and media all bit into Sony's bullshit sandwich about Blu-Ray adoption and resulting death of HD-DVD. It was fucking obvious from the start that Blu-Ray was in the PS3 to push up player numbers for the format but it seems nobody seemed to care until now.
When I get my HDTV, I'll rent more movies Blu Ray. I did yesterday with a friend rent One missed called on Blu Ray instead of DVD. The fucking thing didn't have a menu! It had a pop up menu but no menu that's like SO VHS.
Did they ever think that the reason Blu-Ray movies might not do as well as games is because they cost like 30 dollars? I could've sworn that was it. 60 bucks for a game is one thing, but half of that for a movie with a couple of special features and hi-definition? Maybe they should lower that to around 20 dollars. Then again, I could be mistaken, I mean, I'm no analyst.
@Jelster: Are you suggesting that Sony put a Blu-ray player in its new game system to improve the chances of the success of the format?
SHENANIGANS!
I got a PS3 once again when Toshiba dropped HD-DVD b/c I knew I'd then want a BD player. I'm not sure this guy is right. I use my PS3 for movies more than games stil at this point. I've got 2 games that I play on it. Motorstorm and the original Half-Life for PS2. I know a 50 something yr old co-worker who said he had gotten one for his son and then bought a second just to hook up to his main TV for Blurays. The Blockbuster here took forever, but in the last month or so they finally got Blurays(unfortunately for them I'd become spoiled by Netflix when they finally got them). I will say I haven't bought any BD movies b/c of the price but I'm starting to see some good deals on the Die Hard Collection and couple of the original Romero "Dead" movies.
It really isn't surprising that 85% of players would be PS3s since it had been the cheapest for a while and is still the best standalone BD player on the market since it is the only one that can be updated via the internet.
Would you rather pay $29 for a movie or $19 for a movie. If you had supported HD-DVD you would only have to pay $19.
Until Blu-ray (not to mention the PS3) drops it's price(s), they will never sell much.
I think we was basically saying that with 85% of Blu-Ray players being PS3's many of those people bought it for games not movies so it can't necessarily equate to more Movies sells. I don't think he was questioning people play games on the system.
I highly recommend Blu-ray movies. On a 50" HDTV Blu-Ray DESTROYS cable HDTV. DVD's upscaled look like old man balls.
Blu-Ray offers way more in sound than picture. Quality is over 10 times greater with the new DTS-HDMA and Dolby HD.
I own 4 movies and have rented many more from Blockbuster. The PS3 is the best Blu-Ray player available and it is very cheap when compared to similarly featured players.
Sony was very smart in the long run. The high price may have cost them the first year in gaming. It did however win the War and the PS3 will eventually sell 100 million units.
@Maximus9: I totally agree. It will take a few years for Blu-ray disk and player costs to come down, just like the transition from VHS to DVD. Sony is covering their bases by adding video downloads soon (we'll see if they do as well as Microsoft or Apple).
I think the analyst got a bit confused about what really drives sales: software/movie titles. The studios care less about a lot of Blu-ray players being sold then they do being able to predict how many Blu-ray discs will be purchased by those with the players. The fact that some PS3 owners will only purchase games makes it difficult to predict Blu-ray disc sales to Blu-ray player owners. So, in the market analysis and prediction sense, the PS3 is a crutch. I can honestly say though that the inclusion of the Blu-ray player pushed me towards the PS3 (ok, and the next Final Fantasy games...), and I currently own more Blu-ray discs than PS3 games.
Well I have a theory on this dibocle.lol
I can say that between family and friends that own the PS3 only 4 of my friends buy BluRay movies on a regular myself included, but not many younger gamers even care about the BluRay movies and are buying regular DVD's and bootlegs left and right. Another thing with the difference between HD-DVD selling so many units remember over 500,00 "not" including any 360 HD-DVD drives where as it was/is the other way around for the BluRay market. Where 90% of BluRay units out in home are PS3 and a very little amount of stand alone BR units are sold. So now BluRay movie sales are rotten and Sony just clustfucked the industry...lmfao
@Spartan1308: *When I say "standalone", I mean not a drive that is part of a computer. That probably wasn't the most appropriate term as it seems many don't consider it "standalone" since it also plays games.
@enigma89: The cheaper dics will definitely help. HD-DVDs are selling quite well at this point b/c they are finally at decent prices. Also, just wait for something like the original Star Wars trilogy to be released and disc sales will shoot through the roof.
I did notice that my local Blockbuster finally carries some physical Blu-ray titles now. That makes me really happy due to the fact I have a movie pass, and it is just a block away. More justification of my PS3 purchase for my wife(not a gamer at all and hates my PC spending)!
Other than that, I won't buy a retail Blu-ray movie for what their selling them for. My wife is the real movie fan in this family, but if she caught me buying a movie for that much she would kill me. It's easier and cheaper to rent, or stream through Comcast for us.
@D00mM4r1n3:
What on earth are you talking about? You clearly don't and didn't have a HD-DVD player. The movie prices were the same as BD, and sometimes more because of the combo format. Player prices were cheaper but that's about it.
As for the post, well, scapegoats are popular and analysts really need to keep busy. The DVD format co-existed with games on the PS2 in 2000, and it even helped in regions like Japan (where it was the cheapest DVD player).
Standalone player sales are up, and stores are stocking more movies than ever (and selling them too). More importantly, it hasn't been that long since HD-DVD's demise. A mass market boom won't happen overnight.
If it didn't happen for DVD in 1996, BD won't be any different.. Well, it actually is growing faster in the same time period since introduction thanks to some well known gambles.
I am a hardcore gamer had have 5 PS3 games compared to 49 blu-ray movies so...I think I am using it mostly for a blu-ray player.
@homernoy: wow I am in the same boat, except for the fact that buy the movies in the house so I won't buy a movie unless it is either HD-DVD on the cheap or Blu-Ray I now own 6 BR movies and 35 HD-DVD movies. But the BluRay movies cost sooooo much just for a sit down of 2hrs or less. The thing with the hardcore crowd is that games r a priority and movies are an after thought for most (not all) PS3 owners. So you see for the total movies sold is too low for the amount of units out there.
i didn't buy many dvd's and i surely won't buy expensive blue ray dvds. but, i may just rent them, if they start having a better selection at blockbuster. maybe the whole hd revolution was overhyped? if they wanted to make more money off sales of movies, it ain't from me.
The reason why I don't buy blu rays is because they somehow always manage to put less extra features on the blu rays then they do on the dvds. So...work on that. And I know if I bought them they'd announce the ultimate edition for like half of what I paid for the regular edition a week later.
