It's blurry, yes, and they're all yammering on in Japanese, but you get the gist. It's Metal Gear Online. And it's Metal Gear Online not in some pre-prepared trailer, but how it'll look when you're actually allowed into the beta on Friday (fingers crossed, touching wood upon a crossed heart). Looks...well, it certainly looks different.

Hideo Kojama got my CS in his MGS.
:o
Just watching this video makes me fully understand how different Japanese "multiplayer" is. It seems incredibly, incredibly slow.
How many times can one get shot in the head and not die?
I dont get it..some guy getting shot in the head 30 times???
Um- either that game has stupid amounts of character health or the WORST hit detection ever - how many head shots did that guy live through???? Talk about something that would tick me off playing. Neither are good for a game.
Agreed as well - seemed really slow
Is that guy shooting his teammate for the first minute or so?
Looks a lot like the old MGO gameplay. Which makes me happy.
Honestly, Winback Online?
Yeah this video needs a bit more explaining? Does that guy have a ridiculous amount of body armor IN THE HEAD? Or was he on the same team and no team killing, or what? That guy got head shot like 15 times...
Looks awesome.
@Sinharvest: Wasn't he shooting at someone on the same team? I thought that's why the headshots didn't matter. The real question is wtf is up with making love to an unconscious soldier???? They better include this in MGS4 for free because I just got highly doubtful that this can compete against other multiplayer games released this year.
@willsueforfood: That's exactly what I was thinking, looks quite slow. Could prove to be a snipe-fest all game. Then again, if the gun accuracy in that video (providing that wasn't EXTREME lag) is anything to go by, even the snipers may have a hard time.
Suddenly I don't feel so bad about not owning a PS3. Looks like MGS 3 Online...Not a good thing IMO.
THERE IS A GUY
DOING A BACKFLIP
OFF OF A HOUSE
I AM SOLD
@Schoolimangooli:
For lack of anything witty to say, LMAO @ the guy head shooting that dude 20 times. Same team or not, that's funny.
This actually looks cool. Kinda reminds me of Lost Planet(the pacing, for one thing).
Do want.
It seems very similar game play to the first Metal Gear Online
@pot3ntial2suck: There was a magazine near the other soldier, seemingly set up as a trap by whoever was tranquilizing his team. When he tried to revive his buddy, he was drawn in by the magazine.
And the title doesn't have to appeal to everyone to be successful. The first Metal Gear Online that came with Subsistence looks extremely similar, but that didn't keep it from being damn fun.
Hmmm...I'll have to see some better footage. Animations bothered me, but it looked pretty fun.
This is just peanuts though, anyone who wants MGS wants it for SP, not a tacked on multiplayer.
Didn't look like playing dead/ asleep helped him any at the end! and was he forced to look at an adult mag? might be an interesting trap....forced to look at porn online
@karasu is my homeboy: Yes the music, the sound, and the pace reminds me of lost planet's multiplayer. Well put.
I am still kinda interested in this although Konami do seem to enjoy kicking it's customers in the nuts.... But wow the animation is dreadful.
A resounding "Meh"?
@Travezy: If the first MGO was anything to go by, sniping will be popular, sure, but easily countered by close-quarters stuff. It's a rock-paper-scissors title like many other tactical games out there.
Yeah I was thinking the same thing, Lost Planet.
That shit is near unwatchable.
I honestly couldn't care less about Metal Gear Online. It seems to me they're a little late to be jumping on the online bandwagon.
Too little, too late. FAIL, Konami!
I don't mind that it's "slow"; the trailers for MGO seem to emphasize moving as a team rather than one-to-one battles, anyway. I'd like to be able to think out my moves instead of getting killed because some guy on the other team flung a grenade in my general direction (practically every other shooter on the market)
@not_tom_brokaw:
Because, you know, grenades shouldn't kill you.
I think thats his teammate, didnt the players view change for a second to the view of the guy whose head he was shooting at? It could be the SOP system...
Also, just a heads up, but be careful around the internets if you dont want the intro and a bit of gameplay of GTA4 spoiled, aiite? Its on youtube and gametrailers... and my hard drive haha. But yeah, avoid them to not see that stuff.
Now to find out HOW they got the game THIS early. Getting it on the 28th-27th is fine, but 23rd? Thats just rubbing it in our faces.
Do Want. Konami, don't let all of Europe down on this one [again]. You didn't give us the Limited Edition MGS4, so at least make this shit work by the end of the week.
Lost Planet? Really? You're usually coming into contact with more enemies and dancing more in fights with LP; MGS4 Online still seems to have that stiff gait and awkward 'shoot until this guys' slightly too-large health bar is drained'.
I'm not bashing, but I can't see the comparison to LP.
i wondered how a Stealth game that focuses on steath and being undetecteble would play.
if it was staying true to that i would expect it to be slow.
That guy was as pretty bad sniper :P
@not_tom_brokaw: well dude, dunnoe if your played Team Fortress 2... but that game is a solid example of a FAST high polish team orietated multiplayer game. As a MGS fan, cant help but say im dissapointed... cant remember if the MGO is now included with the MG4, if not ill prob just stick with MG4.
i played at comic con, and it was slow, awkward, clunky, and boring. the guy told me that there would be a leveling/stat system to increase run speed and all, which means i will not be playing it.
Meh. I don't get it. I can't tell whats going on, and how someone can take 30 bullets to the back of the head. Also, whats up with the zzz's and the <3's?
That looked very, very meh. Some cool flips but the gunplay was horrific. It was slow, yet not tactical. Just stupid if you ask me.
I just got a PS3 and want to love the looks of this game, but that video just busted my bubble pretty good.
Fortunately I am still stoked about the standard MGS4 game coming out here soon.
This doesn't seem like an accurate representation on what I have read about the game but, it looks fun to me. Setting traps and slicing necks FTW!
and I thought COD4's sniping hit detection sucked...
Haha, that was about 16 head shots and the guy didn't drop. I'd almost want to give it a try, just to hear the 12 year olds having screaming fits after that happens.
Urgh, reminds me of the Subsistence version for the PS2... so slow, clunky and Metal Gear-ish... therefore, BAD.
I'm stick with COD4, thx.
Yeah, those headshots were a little disconcerting.
I instantly regret watching that footage before trying it out on Friday.
Never had a network adapter for PS2, so I didn't get a chance to play the original MGO. To me, it seems the series' strengths will always lie in the single player campaign.
As hyped as MGS4 is, I'm certain it will be incredible. A blurry video can't bring the excitement down. I might have to just stick to COD4 for my online gaming needs.
You mean it will look more like the blurry video when I play it friday than the pre prepared hd gameplay trailer?
ohhh kotaku
yes, i can tell exactly what the game will be like from perhaps one of the blurriest trailers I've ever seen. Plus, Japanese always play like Americans. ALWAYS.
He had to have been shooting at a teammate. Otherwise, he had like 20 clean hits to that guy's dome.
COD4 > MGO
...I dunno, but I get the feeling Portable Ops still outdoes this one, no matter how nice it wants to look.
Portable Ops is perhaps more arcade-ey...but still, I guess this is just a beta.
@JasonR:
amazing contribution.
wow ill stick with COD4 ... the animations were crap and gameplay looked... umm.. nevermind.
i dont want to start a war lets just say MGS is a single player game hands down
for online COD4 is where its at...
and i hate to tell people i doubt MGS singleplayer will even come close to looking as good as COD4's Single player
Relax guy, I the video wasn't that great and the sniper really sucked, but u get a chance to try it on friday.
I probably was his own teammate btw, and the MGS has never been a fast pace shooter, so why do you expect cod4 speeds? Suppose to be a tactical shooter, where you take up positions and talk to your team, not just Rambo the entire time. Don't get me wrong I love cod4 for PS3 but half the people don't have mic's so I really can't talk to them. If you want the best MGO experience you should pick up a mic, and find a team
"It was slow, yet not tactical." that was said above puts it into terms well.
@phantam: I think you're retarded... have you seen the gameplay footage? It's clear which single player graphics are better, and I really like COD4.
It's way too early to pass judgement but, I did anyways.
@Schoolimangooli: maybe the japanese doesn't like the headshot kills or maybe there's a bad detection, anyway this is the beta. hope those problems get solved to the june launch.
It's always a bad idea whan players can adjust the camera so that they can look around corners without exposing themselves.
Folks this footage is blurry as hell so cant really tell 1 who hes shooting and 2 if hes actually hitting them or not.
Now when the Game Trailer version comes out with nice quality and we actually see him hitting the guy then Id be worried.
Until then dont play follow the leader with thinking the game is screwed up just because you see the commentor above you say so.
