Splatterhouse is back! The next issue of EGM is said to have the exclusive first look at Namco Bandai's revival of the twenty year old sidescrolling hack and bludgeon classic that features a Jason Voorhees lookalike on the hunt for his missing girlfriend. In the arcade version, protagonist Rick Taylor uses the power of the Terror Mask and his expert ability to whack things into a bloody mess to track down the lovely Jennifer. The TurboGrafx 16 port is currently available via the Wii Virtual Console.
New-gen Splatterhouse details are non-existent, but EGM subscribers should start seeing their copies hit later this week.

WOOHOO...gimme a 2x4 someone quick
YES!!! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!!!
( i am trying to convey enthusiasum for this game )
Should I cheer for one of my childhood classics returning?
Or should I weep that the current generation of gamers will only know all these once-were name droppers as mediocre games. I mean, Bionic Commando better turn out to be fucking 11/10 or Im gonna poop myself.
I guess this is what movie buffs find repulsive/intriguing about remakes.
wow, now THATS a blast from the past!
Yeeeeeehaw! Rick's back!
So, when are Sega going to give us Streets of Rage 4, in High Definition 2D glory?! I mean, come on. Now even SPLATTERHOUSE is getting revived.
Then again, Sega might mess it up anyway.
im glad i wasnt a splatterhouse fan to begin with, because 90% of the time, revivals end up either not living up to hardcore fans expectations, or just garbage in the first place because theyre trying to be too much like todays games.
im more excited about the xbl/psn bionic commando than the new one coming out. sorry to be pessimistic, who knows, it could be cool.
HOLY @#$@....
I never thought I would see the day...
Anyone read Hack/Slash? Because that guy looks a lot like Vlad.
Im curious as to what those other 34 remakes are going to be though. Unless some of them already include ones we already know about like Golden Axe:Beast Rider. Fatal Fury please?
Ohhh, damn this could be good....
I totally owned this on Turbo Grafx 16.
Ah, the memories...
This + Announcement of Earthworm Jim revival = Best day evar.
@Magic Emperor Anima: man i have to agree with that on all levels. ive read so much about ancient (basically the designers of the streets of rage series, but not the actual developers) trying to get sega to give them the green light on a new streets of rage. they even made video of a proposed dreamcast game, and they shot it down saying there wasnt enough interest in the series. tells you how much sega execs know/knew about their own ips. but seeing what theyre doing with golden axe, and what capcom did with final fight, im sorta glad theyre letting streets of rage rest in peace. but its inevitable, im sure we'll see one within the next couple of years. and itll suck.
Sounds like the perfect boyfriend!
Holy shit, Splatterhouse is coming back?! Crazy!!!
@ArmyofJuan: mmm fatal fury, you play that battle archives 2? i love the real bout games, and i never got to play them with a proper controller, i always toyed around with them on a keyboard on mame.
@Aethyr:
Nuh uh. The perfect boyfriend is either Billy/Jimmy Lee from Double Dragon. A boyfriend who fights his way through hundreds of badguys, then when only him and his best friend are left to rescue you, he fights his best friend to the death over your love.
The ending to the first double dragon is far more fucked up than anything splatterhouse haha
i actually spurt my drink thru my nose from shock while reading the headline...
it's about freakin time!!!
@sascha23: I had that as well along with the Genesis version. It is good to see the classics being revived. I can't wait to go upside someone's head with a 2x4 and chunkify it.....
This is defiently shaping up to be the console generation of revivals.
Droooools***
Oh now that's just awesome.
@Komrade_Kayce:
Seriously. The NES version had practically a "School Days" esque ending...
Hellz yeah!
The cover of EGM says TECMO BOWL: KICKOFF.
Be still my heart.
Man a new splatter house this is amazing.
@TheCleaningGuy:
Good eye!
Omfg
Im officially excited now. Tecmo Bowl coming back is equally as exciting if not more exciting than more splatterhouse.
A new Splatterhouse is tremendous news. I am unbelievably excited about this.
"The cover of EGM says TECMO BOWL: KICKOFF."
i wouldn't get hopes up of that turning out to be good.
Who did they convince that there would be a demand for Slatterhouse? Who cares, this is awesome! Made all the better because of the "Wii" tag. Is this true?
@TheCleaningGuy: Holy [curse], you're right!
OH... MY... GOD! \o/
i actually ment to say Final Fight and not Fatal Fury. More Cody less Terry
Splatterhouse for Wii? Now I have seen everything.
WORD.
I am very excited for this game. It should be an all out gore-fest. :D
I've been trying to figure out what they were hinting at in the last issue of EGM. Sweeeeet...
Splatterhouse, sick.
What I'm really looking for is a "Mutant League Football" revival though.
Holy crap.
...I hope it's not as hard as the other games...I never got far in any of them ._.
Also, a random thought:
I just saw the Forbidden Kingdom, and liked it a lot. But, the trailers gave me absolutely no idea what the movie was about, at least accurately. 5 min in, I was in a very '...what?' state. Then, it got awesome.
It's a shame this doesn't work for games, cause then you could start out as Rick, walking around your house or something...then BAM TERROR MASK! and "HOLY CRAP! It's Splatterhouse o.o"
If done really, really well (like MGS2, but with something awesome instead of something like kicking the real character aside for some emo kid >.>;), that would be pretty sweet.
My... day has been made. Seriously. Words can't describe...
Oh yes. Oh HELL YES.
Color me guardedly optimistic. Hopefully they add in the superior arcade version of the original as a bonus.
HELL YEAH!!
splatterhouse 2 was the first game i got with my megadrive, still love it even though it's a bit shallow. I'd love a first person melee version for the wii, kinda like condemned. To me, condmened reminded me a lot of splatterhouse 2&3.
Holy Florida Bar, Batman, Jack's gonna be all over this.
@interficium:
Ive been waiting forever for someone to get around to bringing that series back.
Ahh, Splatterhouse. Bringing back the good old days on my Genesis.
It was one of those games that gives you the feeling of a psycho serial killer, but with a love story entwined in blood and gore, and with cutscenes that were enticingly freaky, not allowing you to take your eyes off of the screen for one second.
Also somewhat challenging, so that you can beat the time on each level, giving you that feeling of suspense.
Now, if they were to utilize that into the new game, with an awesome storyline, and none of that cheap filler shit, then we may have a good game.
I mean, I love "hack-n-slash" games, but by not giving this game what it rightfully deserves to become a great remake, it should more than likely just stay the way it ended with Splatterhouse 3.
Lord in Heaven, thou hast heard mine prayer and bestowed upon me a most beauteous bounty of death and carnage.
Well it was either you or the guy downstairs. Either way, thanks mysterious deity! Man, this brings back so many beautiful memories of playing Splatterhouse 3 on the old Genesis as a kid.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! This news has me so randy!! God, I feel so fertile now... I want to bang a statue!!!
I love Splatterhouse, but since when is the protagonist's head so tiny? And body so big?
I although thought the controls for the original game were horrible, I might have just sucked though. I did enjoy the different boss fights and the overall atmosphere of the game. The fact that you looked like Jason Vorhees was the selling point for me.
@sloner: Since Splatterhouse 3
I'm really happy to see Splatterhouse return. The people worrying about whether this one will match up to the old games need to go back and play those old games... While there's nothing wrong with them, they're special because of the atmosphere, not the gameplay. That's all the new game has to get right, and it probably will. Aesthetics are the first thing you notice when looking at a game anyway.
@Magic Emperor Anima:
Namco can mess up things too you know. Just look at SC Legends for one example, and the dreadful Dead to Rights games etc.
But yeah, I would love the return of SOR. I actually still play the 2nd and third games more often than most new games.
W00t!
Please for the love of all things holy don't screw up this revival. Spatterhouse was truly one of the best arcade classics.
This is awesome. I hope they do it like the new Bionic Commando Remake (3d but with a fixed camera), but I'll buy it no matter what. Honestly, how could they go wrong?
MUCHO <3!
I'm quite looking forward to seeing what they do with this -- I loved Splatterhouse on my TG16 ... as a matter of fact, I have incredibly fond memories of my TG16 & CD ... I mean, people were playing NES games while I was getting a full orchestral serenade from Ys Books 1 & 2 <--- can't wait for that on the VC, either.
About damn time! Oh man, I can wait to smash some heads in 3D glory. I @#@# hope the ESRB doesn't try to go all Manhunter on Namco.
So who will win the title of best old school remake, lots of choices now a days but my money is on Splatterhouse.
So is this a Wii exclusive? Or what platform is this coming out on?
@BassForever:
Not sure exactly, but the original TurboGrafx 16 port of Splatterhouse is currently available via the Wii Virtual Console. Guess we'll have to wait and see what the new one is going to come out on once the new EGM is out.
Now if you'll excuse me, I must go and download it and remember how badass that game was back in the day. It shall be my first VC purchase.
Crazy undead fetus' in hi-def!
Give me a bat!
@BassForever: I think that they are just referncing the TG-16 Splatterhouse on the Wii's VC. With luck it might come out for the Wii but my money is no a 360&PS3 release.
YES! About fuckin' time. I have the original on MAME and it fills me with goodness of when I used to go to the arcades as a kid. All I need is the butcher knife and a shotgun...... beware.
Oh hell yeah. I was talking about this game not two weeks ago with a friend as being one of the games that needs to see a current gen version.
Bloody awesome. First Bionic Commando, now Splatterhouse..what's next? I'm putting my money on Bayou Billy!
Best news this year!!
Move over GTA 4!
Exactly what the world needs. I'm actually serious. I loved Splatterhouse, although my experience with it was a ROM ten years after it was released...
Hm, seeing all this love for Splatterhouse in this thread is making me think I missed out on something. Should I run to my nea
