In most households, Rock Band has destroyed any semblance of a classy living room. But this stand by Dude Thing Creations hopes to organize your life and justify your tax bracket with their Rock Band stand (for everything but drums). Running $55 and constructed of wood, Gizmodo had a hands-on and declared, "It works! propping up your guitars against this thing is much classier than leaning them against walls, cabinets, chairs, dogs or ottomans. There's even two sets of hooks on either side so you can wrap your cables around them for even more neatness."
Anticipating the comments, I'm going to point out that, yes, you could make such a contraption at home for less money. But given what we've already spent on Rock Band, what's another fitty?

I think it looks rather classy. The surface area on top is a nice touch for sure.
Why would you have 4 guitars?
Um.... that $50 could go towards a wireless Rockband Guitar (for us 360 users). And I DO know my way around a table saw, router and sander :P
Neat concept though, I'll be sure to incorporate some of it when I make my own now LOL.
... did they run out of things to put on there, because the Wii Nunchuck looks out of place.
@Cathaoir: It's more likely than you think. I've got an SG, an Explorer, a Les Pual and a Strat.
@Cathaoir: I've had six total, sold three of them.
Maybe it's a bit too big ! You can easily arrange a setup to put your guitars in a not too disturbing way ! In counterpart, I don't see any way to hide the drumkit in this thing !
Thing doesn't look bad at all. Would be a nice way to to stow my 3 guitars. I'd really love if someone could make a nice piece that could store the drums, though. Mine are up in a closet right now. Not that big of a deal since I live in a 3rd floor apartment and the noise keeps me from drumming that much, but still...
@Cathaoir: For people with Rock Band AND Guitar Hero, look at the picture closer.
Pretty cool, I do have 3 guitars at the moment just laying about. Drum set needs an elevator to rise up and down into the floor; cool fog optional.
That does look nice. Seriously though, 50 bucks? :(
@Cathaoir: Multiple guitar models, having both Rock Band and Guitar Hero, etc...
I'd rather have a real guitar on a stand in my living room, rather than paying money to show all of my friends that I'm a loser.
:(
I don't want to seem like a loser.
@Cathaoir: It's pretty easy to run into multiple guitars. I actually have five, two for the PS2 and 3 for the 360, GHII, GHIII, RB.
@Cathaoir: I have three...
One came with Rock band, one with GH2, and one with GH3. When GH4 or what not comes out, I then will have 4.
if you want to be classy, then buy a real guitar and learn how to play it.
@HootieMac: Section 9 Reject: All my stuff is tucked in a corner in the living room. I wish I had a closet. But, I don't, and this would be nice.
Too bad the color doesn't match my furniture. Is it available in walnut? I guess a tablecloth would fix that.
@Shocky: Did you wander in here by accident?
@Shocky: I take it you don't tell your friends you post on a video game news board either...
@Mohican: Ugh. I do play guitar. So do plenty of people who play these games.
$50 isn't that bad. An actual 4-guitar stand costs more.
Couldn't care less about the Rockband stuff, I want that screen in the background.
You could lean the guitars against the drumset which is the hardest piece to hide anywhere and this stand doesn't help.
@HootieMac: Section 9 Reject: According to the original post on Gizmodo, the same guys who made this are working on another version that would hold the drums and 2 guitars. I'll have to keep an eye out for that one....and read all source material before commenting on future posts.
Looks nice but i'm in agreement with Cathaoir, i'm not sure why you'd have 4 guitars. Unless you have money to burn and enjoy buying a new guitar everytime a GH game gets released.
Would have been much better if they made it a bit lower (the surface @ the top) and had supports all around and on the corners. Then I would be able to put my Xbox or PS3 on the top.
Make a place for Drums and I am sold.
@HootieMac: Section 9 Reject: That one I would buy. I can nicely put away all my guitars already, though the drum set really has no real home in the basement atm.
@Daymonster: They're working on one.
"It works!"
Wait, how would it not work? It's a stand...
@OneManFreakShow: It would fall over (i.e. not stand). Which would make it pretty pointless to advertise but I've seen worse.
Thats nice, but I want a better way to store the drums. Harmonix still gets a big PHAILED for not giving them the ability to fold up.
@AudibleDefect: Posting on a video game news board and spending 60 bucks to show off my gaming equipment are two different things ;)
For that price, can't you just buy a real guitar stand?
Wow, I thought the "play a real instrument" argument died out.
Here's a tidbit: I plan on buying a real guitar AND Rock Band. Did I just blow some minds?
I need this...my living room would look a whole lot cleaner. Might encourage my wife to not put the instruments on the floor when she's done playing. ;)
I would totally get one of these. I should attempt to make one.
@Mohican:
I already to play guitar, among other instruments. When are people like you going to learn that Rock Band and Guitar Hero are nothing but games?
This is pretty cool. I have 3 guitars and I stuff them all in the gig bag that came with my GH3 bundle but this would look alot neater sitting next to my drums behind my couch.
While this seems like a decent product, you could get a real guitar stand for much cheaper, and it would do pretty much the same thing.
At Musician's Friend, you can get a 2 guitar stand for $13, and a 3 guitar stand for $20. And you'd get double the use if you actually have some real guitars.
@FanDam:
Sure, but this looks more furniture like than a guitar stand. Still, You can get a cheap guitar stand for $8 at Musicians Friend:
[www.musiciansfriend.com]
Or get yourself a double stand for $13:
[www.musiciansfriend.com]
Hell you can get a triple stand for $20:
[www.musiciansfriend.com]
And the drums go where?! That is the real tough part to store.
@Vegasadelphia:
In the closet I guess. Haha.
@Froggore: I don't know what those 2 and 3 guitar stands look like, but I bought 2 $8 single guitar stands at Guitar Center. The Guitar Hero and Rock Band guitars are small enough that you can put 2 per stand. You put them back-to-back, otherwise the whammy bar gets in the way.
They're just plastic, not real guitars. No reason not to double up.
I don't even use my guitar anymore. All about drums. In fact I have two sets of drums, one is sitting in a bedroom no one uses. You could say the entire room is being set aside for that one set of drums. They need their space.
I went to home depot and got some closet organizer tie rack hooks and mounted them on my wall. Actually looks pretty decent and works well. Think I was able to hang four guitars, the mic, cabling, and a set of headphones for around $20 in material with hooks to spare.
"I don't want to seem like a loser. "
Okay Shocky, we'll keep your secret and not tell anyone you are. Now you just need to stop acting like one or you'll give yourself away!
From a geeky perspective, is it better or worse to put a plastic guitar in a real guitar stand?
Maybe what we need are plastic 'real guitar stand' imitations that cost $5.
@mind in rewind:
Add me to that list. Actually, guitar hero spurred my interest in playing guitar more. I play my guitar more than I play the plastic one now.
If there was no guitar hero, I probably would'nt pick up the guitar as much as I do now. I may have even never picked up a guitar again if it weren't for GH.
It's easy to just write off guitar hero as a silly little game, but I believe it really helps you appreciate music more fully, especially for people who aren't so musically inclined.
I would not take away the joy of making music from anyone, even if it is just simulated.
Some people are just stupid elitest jerks.
@Shocky: It's ok, we've all hidden in the 'gamer closet' once in a while. But it's safe to come out now, others have forged the path ahead of you in the publics eye. Take pride in who you are! We're here for you man.
Wrong. Get real guitar stands and a mic stand. Takes up about the same amount of space, but is cheap and actually reasonably useful.
@ShaggE:
*boom*
@CaptLtrl: @mind in rewind: Could we maybe petition Kotaku to enforce some sort of laws against people who post that tired old statement, "I play real guitar, so I'm better than people who only play 'fake' guitar"? I play guitar, too, but that doesn't make Rock Band or Guitar Hero any less fun. Part of it is that I would listen to some of the music on the games anyway, so playing along and making it so that hearing the music depends on me is something cool, just as learning to play one of my favorite songs is cool, too.
Whatever. The mentality that people like Mohican have just frustrates me. It's as if I were to say, "I like playing Call of Duty 4" and some guy from the Marines or SAS was like, "Yeah, well, why don't you pick up a gun and really kill people?!" That may be a little extreme, but you get my point. I want to play the game. It is fun. Let's leave it at that.
Anyway, back on topic, that guitar stand is pretty cool. The price is a bit steep, but if I had that many GH or RB instruments I'd probably consider it.
@Cathaoir: It stands to reason that many people who have Rock Band are/were also interested in Guitar Hero, so they may want someplace to store those extra guitars. :P
I have a guitar stand for my one guitar but it tends to tip over in my dorm room. But that's okay, it works.
When I get a bigger space I'll get a space saving device... by then they'll have the drum set and 2 guitar rack. That's all I need!
@CaptLtrl: I've played guitar, bass and sometimes piano since the age of 7 or so. During those 21 years, nothing have spurred my interest to picking up any of my instruments again as much as the Guitar Hero games did. I recommend the game to people who do play guitar as much as to the ones that don't. Best part of it is that you get a feeling of playing in a band without having to be in a band full of elitist jerks who look down on guitar hero as a toy. Granted, it's not the exact same thing... it's actually more fun with less frustration and drama...
...now it can't hold a candle against playing in a band with only nice people though... but for some reason those are rare. Too much elitists among musicians I guess...
@Shocky:
Your point is moot as in your original post, you degrade gamers as a whole who play the game. It had nothing to do with "showing off" anything...you basically said that Rock Band players, who want something to efficiently store their gear are losers. And you obviously don't want to be a loser...but that statement didn't help your image.
I apologize, but all the "Rock Band = fake/dumb/not real" references are getting stale. Being gamers or people who happen to play the game doesn't mean they claim being a musician themselves. Hell, I'm a club dj....you don't see me bashing everyone that plays Beatmania!! Or people who purchase $500 arcade-perfect controllers or whatnot. It's no different than rippig into someone who has 500 or so DVDs with a really nice $200 cabinet to store them in or to display.
And to go even beyond the point, what does it matter if they want to show it off? We all own shit that we're all proud of, right? So if someone wants to pick up a piece of funiture to store it and make themselves feel better that they're hot shit on a silver platter....more power to them man!
Got a bit worked up there eh? To stay on any ACTUAL topic:
I would love to grab something like this. I do need to do something with my drumkit though, so I'll wait until that pans out.
~peaceout all
pretty cool idea. I just chuck my guitar down by my bed when im done
I'm a gamer, i don't do classy living rooms.
My whole livingroom is centerd around the tv and pc. All my furniture is secondhand and i don't believe in dining tables your lap is just as good.
@peAr_nectAr: I've also never understood that mentality at all. Why is Guitar Hero suddenly the only game that has that effect on people. I've never played tekken and had some guy come up to me and say "learn REAL martial arts, queer!" or played Madden and had some one go "Throw a REAL football, LOSER!"
What is it about guitar hero that gets peoples panties in such a bunch?
I bought a double-guitar stand from Amazon for about $18 plus tax and shipping. Works for me.
