When we learned that The Collective—now Double Helix—had been tasked with Silent Hill V development at E3 last year, we wondered "What about Harker, that original vampire kicking game they're working on?" Since we've heard just shy of nothing on Harker for nearly a year and Silent Hill V was just recently rechristened Silent Hill: Homecoming, a report from GameSpot that the team has essentially killed the game doesn't surprise.
"Killed" is more politically correctly described as being put on "permanent hiatus", but it's rare for these projects to be resurrected. As long as they don't muck up the next Silent Hill, we'll forgive this cancellation of a game that we weren't particularly interested in anyway.
Foundation 9 buries Harker [GameSpot]

That better not be a SH5 screen.
And lo, one more attempt at relatively original game gets tossed by the wayside in favour of a well known IP.
But I wanted to kick the vampires D:
yes! we love when interesting and original ips get slaughtered for the Nth installment in a franchise.
(hint: we don't.)
@SkutSkut: Its a Harker screen.
So that's what happened to Harker. I couldn't remember the developer for the life of me. Thanks for the heads up MC!
@Komrade_Kayce:
They might get back to it once SH IV is finished. One can only hope, as the vampire squishing machine press was nothing short of awesome.
I'll never understand why nobody expects something good of Silent Hill 5. Sure, it's a team that hasn't proved themselves on home consoles yet, but can you at least admit the game looks good so far? I'm not gonna play it because I'm a pussified baby, but I think that the Collective has enough since to not screw up a game that has a fan base like Silent Hill. However, I am slightly interested in kicking vampires now. If they do screw up Silent Hill, they should definitely finish this.
Never heard of Harker, probably for the best
@TheCleaningGuy:Silent Hill V worries me. I don't think the Silent Hill series should have continued after III, but I really hope V turns out well.
@dead_red_eyes:
Are we allowed to start referring to him as MC Whertor yet? It has this 90's esque ring to it.
As much as I love SH, I would have liked some vampire kickery too... ah well, can't win 'em all.
@dead_red_eyes:
You can say that many times.
Then can we at least kick nurses in SH5?
Bruce Campbell kicking vampires?
@LittleBigPlaneteer:
Well, it seemed cool. You played a vampire hunter named Jonathan Harker, and it was set for all 3 consoles. It was heavily inspired by Dracula.
And now it is gone. :(
Sigh. SH5 better be freaking brilliant.
@Kyle81:
I wish. We really need a new kick ass Bruce Campbell action flick. His last one "Man with the Screaming Brain" was great, and "Bubba Ho-tep" was hilarious too.
@enigma89:
It's nice to see someone with your point of you. I was a little sceptical at first ... but when I heard that they impressed Konami enough to take over the series, well ... that made me change my mind. And for the fact that Akira Yamaoka is still onboard not only for soundtrack stuff, but as a semi-creative director ... well, it gives me even more hope. Sometimes it takes another persons perspective to bring life back into the series. Resident Evil 4 anyone?
@Komrade_Kayce:
Haha, yeah it has a touch of 90's flair ... but you know you love it!!!
@enigma89: The Collective has somewhat proven themselves on home consoles. The original Buffy game for the xbox was excellent, Wrath Unleashed for the PS2 was a very entertaining game that was highly underrated, and their Indiana Jones game was... well, not awful. Pretty above average, actually, but nothing spectacular.
However, I was really looking forward to the Harker game. If there's one thing that the Collective apparently does very well, it's allowing one to virtually kick vampires into virtual submission. Sigh.
I suppose there would be less apprehension with this company if they had either a stellar track record or more experience with survival horror-type games. I can only imagine how many mouths would be salivating if the SH license went to, say, Frederick Raynal.
@dead_red_eyes:
Ugh, what I meant to say to enigma89 was "It's nice to see someone with your point of view" not "point of you", haha.
Well, that blows. I was far more interested in Harker. The last couple Silent Hill haves have been garbagio.
@dead_red_eyes:
Campbell needs either a new action flick, or a game where hes not just Ash.
I wouldn't mind kicking ass as Brisco County, for example.
@dead_red_eyes:
Bruce is getting old though :(
@Komrade_Kayce:
He has a movie coming out called 'My Name is Bruce'. The trailer in on YouTube.
@dead_red_eyes: The only real bone I had with Double Helix was what they said in the interview for SH5 though. If they do what they are intending to do in SH5, it'll be so far off from the original vision of the SH series that it's not going to be worthwhile to call it a SH game.
Slightly sad...I was actually kinda interested in that one, ah well. Hopefully SC5 ends up being good.
@Mr.SithNinja:
Thanks for the heads up. I totally forgot that was still coming out.
First thing I thought when I saw that pic...is that Bruce Campbell?
glad Im not the only one who thought this.
@Mr.SithNinja:
Apparently it's going to come out this fall, as least that's the word that's going around. My friend went to the first screening of "My Name Is Bruce" during the Ashland Independent Film Festival last year. I was so freaking jealous. I would've gone if I didn't have prior obligations.
@Komrade_Kayce:
Yeah, he does great voice over work ... and I understand either why he doesn't get more video game parts that aren't Ash from the Evil Dead series. A Brisco County game would be awesome, I'd definitely play it.
@SkutSkut:
Yes, he is getting up there. He'll be 50 this June 22nd. I don't envision him getting more action roles. Then again, Harrison Ford is staring in a new Indiana Jones film and he's 65.
@Lyner:
Was it the newly redesigned combat stuff that threw you off? That kinda bummed me out a little bit, as I thought that the clunky controls worked well for fighting & shooting because you usually played characters that didn't have combat experience. So it would make sense to have gimped controls, which brings the player closer to the level of the character. Then again, maybe it's just me that sees it that way.
The fact that they're no longer calling it Silent Hill V doesn't give me hope. First Origins and now this, I'm not sure why Konami feels the need to farm Silent Hill out to western developers. The results from Origins weren't very good and this isn't looking so great either.
Huh i had totally forgotten about this game...too bad looked kinda cool
Huh. I totally forgot about that game. I was actually kind of interested in it too :[
On the other hand, I strongly suspect that many of the gameplay elements from harker will be put into the new Silent Hill. they aren't going to throw good mechanics away, and after all, there may be a reason why the game was retitled.
Have you seen the latest screens of Homecoming? It looks amazingly horrible, suddenly. Take a run over to GAF or something and take a look. We shall see if it manages to just kill the studio entirely.
@Yuki:
Link please.
i was looking forward to Harker...somehow i had still hoped they were working on it and just being hush hush...
:(
i'll be ok...i guess
Well, this is the first I'm hearing of this Harker game. Oh well, here's to hoping that SH5 is good!
SH4 was a dissapointment imo. Of course, it wasn't originally supposed to be a SH game at all in the first place anyway. SH1-3 were good though!
Is it just me or does that guy look like WILL FARELL
@Cathaoir:
Second.
@Domobran: It isn't just you. Now that you mentioned it he does look like Will Farell.
Oh boo! I was looking forward to this, I was imagining a pseudo-sequel to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I was already imagining being able to fight 4 or 5 vamps im a coherant manner, without resorting to button bashing :(
Boo!
