Unreal Tournament 3 has served as a console gamer's diplomat, successfully pulling mods long restricted to PCs to the PS3 and *fingers crossed* the Xbox 360. But past mods have been in small pieces, like Samus skins, more meant to customize the game than fundamentally exploit its robust engine.
Now the user-based developers behind Tactical Ops (a classic UT mod similar to CounterStrike) are talking about bringing Tactical Ops 3 to consoles. While the team doesn't think that the first release of TO3 will support the PS3 or Xbox 360 (due to issues like button mapping), they're confident in the possibility for future releases. And when console mods become the size of full games, we can't stand behind a waist-height object fast enough.

What "button mapping" issue would there be on PS3? They do know it is set up to use KBM right?
I do believe "waste" should be "waist"...
@Mr.SithNinja: I bet the majority of UTIII players on the ps3 don't use the keyboard and mouse.
@iamblinkin: Yes.
Imagine buying a game just to play a mod.
S'crazy :D
@Mr.SithNinja: my thoughts exactly. "sigh", when are people going to get their info right when they make statements like these...
Allow me to join the finger crossing.
@iamblinkin: no, no, he means standing behind a pile of poop, or something sized like it - such as your average console size. Unless it's Pac-Man poop.
@Ryumeka:
Like I bought Half Life to play CounterStrike?
@greeble: I did briefly when I had it from gamefly. I just can't find a way to sit as comfortably with a keyboard and mouse as I can with a controller.
@greeble: And this has what to do with anything? Mods have to be installed manually anyways. If your going to install a mod, your going to have to know if you can actually even play it.
@greeble: I think if given the choice of 'use KBM or no game at all' I think most of them might strap one on to their shiny black box. They are just using that as an excuse because the 360 lacks the option all together. When you think about THAT one it is rather mind-boggling considering it is M$ we are talking about not having that option.
@Mr.SithNinja:
Im not quite sure how someone who uses the abbreviation 'M$' got a star beside their name. Mmm. Must be like pez, those stars.

OT: I've been dying for heavy mod support on consoles forever. The problem is I think its going to get pretty frowned upon by the rest of the console industry. Think about it. If a company is trying to release a mediocre army shooter on a console, something they could never sell on a PC because something like... Day of Defeat... well, a free mod to a game that people already own a bucketload of (like a modded Halo 3 for example), when the mods are easy to aquire/install, is going to piss said developer off.
And Im all for stopping the flow of crappy games, I can just see why some red warning flags are going to get raised. The free to play community sometimes outdoes the paying one.
They'll manage a way to do it , a machine that nobody has access to except Sony.
YO
playstation 3 has mouse and keyboard support while the xbox can't do that.
Wow, its a bit of a coincidence this article was made the day after I made mine and shooting for the same angle to.

Considering this was a forum post mae a month ago. Me KnaveX, Me create news.
I bought UT3 to play UT3 and mods that still relate to UT3 and not mods that only relate to UT3 via engine.
@Ryumeka: Sarcasm right? cause you know... counter strike, day of defeat and desert combat, ya'know.
@Maaxxx: sure it does, it has usb ports doesnt it. Course it's just not supported but that doesnt mean it CANT be.
I still have Thief II installed on my computer and play it once a month or so because new mods are STILL being made for it ([www.ttlg.com])
So is modability good for the end user? Does it have the potential to greatly expand the cost/value ratio? I wonder...
well it certainly would make UTIII sell more. that's for sure. but i want a cover system mod. GOW on PS3 :P
also a HUD change too. UTIII hud is ugly.
Wow, Tac Ops is still around huh?
I remember playing the original version back in the day on Unreal Tournament for the Mac.
Looks like I am going to have to get this UT3 everyone's talking about if you can get all of these mods for PS3. How many people play this on PS3? Are there alternate free maps and characters that you can DL?
@Netnavi:Yes.
@Netnavi: And lots of other good stuff: www.ut3mod.com
@greeble:
I used to play all UT games on PC
UT3 is my first console UT experience
I prefer the Sixaxis for its comfort. was hard at start but got a hang of it in a short while.
& about the button issue, epic did not optimize all the buttons efficiently!
like 4 buttons wasted on Weapon change! TOTALLY UNNECESSARY !
Am I the only one who just doesn't care about the user-created content here? I'd play the UT3 game just for the game and have a good time for awhile. Most user content is so bogus or superfluous anyway.
@Akmed: I Would love to see Gears on my PS3. They Could do it. EASILY
@slomo788: @slomo788:
wow ,ok. I will have to buy this then. thanks guys!
I have bought UT games in the past just for the mods (because I really don't like UT's game-play) and IF the 360 version supports them and IF TacOps 3 does get released for it I will be all over them both even if TacOps 3 costs M$ points.
I loved the original pre-retail version of TacOps. I pretty much bought UT and an ATI Radeon Mac Edition for my Mac just so I could play it. It had some of the best designed maps I have ever seen (especially the AIM-IT Map Pack and some of the enhanced Counter-Strike maps).
How long before we see testicles running around shooting people?
@Wookiee1: Great thing about the character mods is you just see normal Unreal characters if you don't have the character yourself, installed manually... So no one can sneak content to you that you don't want...
Why does it sound like everybody's starting to abandon the PC gaming community? We are still here, guys! :(
your fucking kidding me? TO on the PS3? thats a wet dream ! our clan got to number 1 in the world at that mod!
@RykinPoe:
ah yea i know what your saying man, v1.6 was the best version, in fact it is with out doubt the best game ive ever played even to this date! makes cod4 look like childs play, god knows how many clan matches we played on rapid waters!
@Barf#1:
but it would still be kinda lame imo. still better than UT III lol. i guess i'm just not the one who should be playing UT III
