What a wonderful world it would be if Infinity Ward became the sole developer of the Call of Duty franchise, as rumors earlier today seemed to indicate, but it's one wonderful world that we won't be seeing anytime soon. Speaking to Eurogamer, Activision has vehemently denied the rumors.
A spokesperson for the publisher told Eurogamer it was a total fabrication, and that Treyarch and Infinity Ward would still alternately create installments in the shooter series.This also lays to rest rumors that Activision Underground was shut down due to said non-existent exclusivity deal, due to the whole nonexistence of it all. All we can do now is hope that Treyarch can follow Infinity Ward's footsteps and provide us with a emotion-stirring rap anthem at the end of Call of Duty 5.

*sad face* Lets just hope they don't go back to world war 2 or worse... Call of Duty 5: Korea
Of course it was too good to be true- No way they were gonna pass up millions of dollars in sales for the sake of gaming purity.
Also, I don't think that Treyarch are as bad as everyone is making out. They're just not in the same league as IW.
Could have at least let us dream a little while longer.
So what activision is saying is: Call of Duty 5 is going to be a total pile of shit.
Sorry Treyarch, but IW pwns you.
man I cna't wait for call of duty 6.
Back to "explioting" CoD once a year now.
I dont mind too much either way...CoD4 has really put the franchise up thier with the best of the best (even though it was already huge). Surely IW will somewhat oversee the development of CoD5 and make sure Treyarch keep the 60fps standard for which CoD is know for.
Call of Duty 3 slipped a little bit but it was still a good game.
So it's going to be a year of gaming ecstacy and then a year of suck. *Repeat until the apocolypse.*
In the long run this will be bad for business. All it will take is one really bad game from either of them, although Infinity ward and bad game seems unlikely, for it to sink the series completely.
Spider-man 2 wasn't so bad, in fact, it was one of the best movie game tie-ins, i agree with duckmouth
And i will continue to not buy Treyarch's CoD games simple as that.
thanks infinity ward.
Well there goes that dream.
All the same, CoD5 was gonna be developed by Treyarch either way, and that was still a dissapointment, so nothing really changes.
+ Watch video
Activision, should you really be bragging about this? :\
I say we just skip 5 and start the hype for 6.
I never played CoD3, but I heard enough stories and I know Treyarch well enough to know that CoD6 will be the next best game in the series.
It's sad that there will be thousands and thousands of uninformed gamers who loved COD4 and won't know that COD5 will play nothing like it.
@Cennus:
I second this statement. Of course, I never buy Activision games anyways so I'm hardly effected by this...but it's the principle of the thing.
Activision you folks gotta take your heads out of the sand and pay attention to how many people want IW to take over and TY out.
Too bad commonsense does not rule in the business world.
Count me in among those sitting out CoD5. I'll definitely be buying CoD6, though. Here's hoping it's out next year!
I don't mind... at all! I still play more CoD3 because of IW's inability to include 4-player Live-splitcreen in CoD4.
Yeah!!!!. I'd rather have a COD every year than every other year. I'll always take the option of playing a game over not having such option.
@Witzbold:
Well, Witzy, it is Activision we're talking here. These are the same guys who said, literally, that every key franchise will be "exploited" every year. They don't have respect for any of their properties, they just care about the quickest way to make a buck.
@Archaotic: Ya I know.
Still doesnt hurt to "attempt" to use that grey matter between the ears sometimes tho eh?
As impossible of a request that might be for the big folk.
@DigitalHero: Treyarch or not, I doubt IW would be capable of putting out gaming ecstacy every year ;)
This makes complete sense to me.
If they are doing alternate years, then that gives IW 2 years to come up with another masterpiece.
If the price we have to pay is getting one done on the cheap every other year, and keeping Activision happy to allow IW more time for a sequel, what on earth is the problem?
The brand will only be sullied for the more 'hardcore' gamers who won't bother picking up 5 anyway.
The new franchise: Cash On Delivery
@Archaotic:
I wonder if Infinity Ward feels that Treyarch is dragging their series in the mud. Call of Duty 4 had to clean up the mess COD3 made. Now COD6 will have to clean up the garbage COD5 will make. :(
@Witzbold:
It's getting depressing how little the big name developers seem to really listen to the consumers these days.
I fully guarantee that as the lead-up to Guitar Hero IV continues, Activision will try to claim they invented the multi-instrument music genre as well, and then rip on Harmonix for it. They don't care.
The ignorant masses, the people who don't research before they buy, will eat it up and think it's true, just like the idiots will think that CoD5 is going to be as good as CoD4. Unfortunately for them, by the time they realize they've been screwed, they'll have already opened the case, which means they can't return it. Activision keeps the money. Ugh.
Nooo :( It was too good to be true!
"Treyarch or not, I doubt IW would be capable of putting out gaming ecstacy every year ;)"
@EldonTLH:
So far their record is flawless sir. COD 1 was amazing. COD2 was amazing. COD4 is amazing.
Treyarch can **** off.
Activion can **** themselves.
IW can **** me anytime!
Seriously, so Im waiting till COD6.
@DigitalHero:
I'm sure IW doesn't like what Treyarch does, but at the same time, they're probably a little grateful they're given the extra development time to work on their own games while Treyarch's busy spewing out mediocrity.
If they were tapped to make a new CoD every single year, they'd probably burn out.
"So far their record is flawless sir. COD 1 was amazing. COD2 was amazing. COD4 is amazing."
@ DigitalHero
he said every year, not two.
i have high hopes for COD5, being based in japan, i havent really played a WW2 game based in japan that has met my expectations as a shooter.
@Witzbold:
I would say that about 80% if not more of CoD4 players care who makes the game.
Your average CoD4 player which are most of my friends have no clue who activision or IW is, nor do they really care.
So in a perfect world, it would go COD4: many millions sold.
COD5: 15,000 sold
COD6: Many millions sold.
I seriously hope no one buys COD5 if it sucks, but you know the masses will be like, "HEY! NEW COD game!" and it'll sell 3 million by Christmas.
Don't reward mediocrity!
Well, then, I'm looking forward to Infinity Ward's "Call Of Duty 6: Future Warfare", after Treyarch's "COD 5: Wiggle Your Sixaxis To Sock Osama With The Butt Of Your Gun" comes out on PS3.
cod5 will sell because cod 4 sold, they should let IW at least do the multiplayer.
My hopes have been crushed. Ah well, i don't think Treyarch is a bad developer, they are pretty good but Activion need to give them time to make something worth while, instead if a cash in like the Tom clancy franchise has been known for (looking at you, Vegas 2.)
Thank you Activion, now an angel just lost it's wings.
Too bad cod5 is going back to ww2. I think that was confirmed a while back.
Infinity ward > treyarch. dudes should go back to making spiderman and tony hawk games.
When IW make the game, it is COD.
When anybody else makes it is not COD. It is a WW2 game made by Treyarch that shares the name but not the quality or sales. It has been like that for a while now.
@Tiberian: play call of duty finest hour, which was made by treyarch and was completely bad, i've bought it before i read up on developers and such and though, call of duty on consoles! awesome! because i had played cod1 on pc and from what i played was complete and utter crap when made on consoles, it was so broken that i cried and died a little inside and thought, what wasn't it good?! Its call of duty and that name is good enough to warrant a good game, until i read the developers of the console versions wasn't the same as the pc version and that made me get more informative in the gaming industry about what im playing and who's making what, only game that made me realize that i need more know how of whats out there.
I met an IW guy once and he started talking shit about CoD3 until I mentioned the Treyarch name. It was obvious he was not happy with the quality of CoD3, but he was unwilling to say anything bad about Treyarch.
The only non-IW CoD I liked was the first expansion pack made for the PC, Call of Duty United Offensive. That was developed by Gray Matter Interactive and according to Wikipedia (yeah, I know "verify the wiki first") it was merged into Treyarch. Although only some of the GMI team is still left.
Oh well.

Won't play the same? What about the overall game play are you referring to? To me, EVERY version of COD is run and gun, stealth is not an option or enemy's will continue to spawn until you're out of ammo or get killed, but that's just part of COD's MO. Each developer offers a nice variety of unique maps and varying scenarios using different weapons, vehicals, and locations. I like them both.
@Rebel Without Applause:
See how Treyarch's symbol even looks half-assed compared to Infinity Ward's?
That's the games right there.
I'm all for Infinity Ward CoD exclusivity. I just wish it would actually happen.
@AEREC: But they should care.
I'll be playing CoD 4 until CoD 6 comes out, unless some miracle happens and CoD 5 is amazing.
I'll probably buy CoD 5. CoD 3 wasn't all that bad to me.
/of course, I didn't pay full price for it, so that might have something to do with it.
How times change. Not too long ago, Call of Duty was riding Medal of Honor's coattails, and Treyarch was making sweet games like Draconus and Die by the Sword. Treyarch will always be awesome in my book for Draconus alone. And I thought Call of Duty 3 is pretty close to the quality of the IW COD games. I bet COD5 kicks turns out great.
I am calling it right now.
Call of Duty: Vietnam
Not because I know or want a Vietnam game. No one has made a decent Vietnam game (and don't say one can't be done) and I know Infinity Ward could. Hell I'd take a WWIII game. Anything but another World War II game please; I had my fill ages ago. I am one of those that will not turn around and buy it after bad mouthing the idea.

I don't really like the Call of Duty games and their very, very close-ended worlds (there, damn it to hell, I finally said it), but I've played all of them and didn't think CoD3 was THAT much worse than the acclaimed 2 or 4. I actually thought it was slightly better than 2 (there, damn it to hell, I finally said that, as well). 4 is the best of the bunch, but they're all pretty similar in the gameplay department and none of them are really my cup of tea (there, damn it to hell ... you know the drill).
@Mr.DuckSauce:
This happened to me when I bought the expansion pack for Call of Duty on PC, Call of Duty: United Offensive.
I started playing it and thinking 'Hey, where's the fun gone?', this is not the masterpiece that Call of Duty was.
I soon discovered the expansion was developed by Grey Matter (I think, that was the name) and not by Infinity Ward, thus the game had a different feel. And not a better one in my opinion.
As you say, I soon learned to pay attention to the development teams, not the just the franchise name.
I bought my 360 to play Call of Duty 2. Then I bought Call of Duty 3 and noticed later (after hating it) that it wasn't made by Infinity Ward. Won't be fooled again.
So here is my question? Does Activision own IW, have some kind of stake in the company, or are they just the publisher?
Assuming they're just the publisher and they don't have some kind of legal agreement w/ IW that keeps this from happening... IW could really just say, go eff yourselves, and create a new IP based around war (face it the war FPS story line is generic and a dime a dozen to make) and cut out the middle man. All they need is a new publisher, and after sales of CoD4 I bet they would be beating them off w/ a stick.
Its a wining situation for IW. They get their own IP and don't have to pay any kind of licensing fee. Get to create a new group of games that each year will live up to their quality, and the fans get to know the next iteration won't be total crap.
@Archaotic: I agree. You wouldn't believe the amount of people who don't even know what a developer is, and think it's made by the same people because it says "Activision" on the box.
wait there was a rumor for COD exclusivity?
Um, it would be so awesome. I think it would be their best move...to bad.
