Today Sony announced that the Home Closed Beta will expand to Summer 2008 and invited more users to join. Following this, the Home Closed Beta, an Open Beta will kick off later this fall. Says Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai:
We understand that we are asking PS3 and prospective PS3 users to wait a bit longer, but we have come to the conclusion that we need more time to refine the service to ensure a more focused gaming entertainment experience than what it is today. Our overarching objective is to provide users with new gaming experiences that are available only on PLAYSTATION Home. Spending more time on the development and on the Closed Beta testing reaffirms our commitment to bringing a quality service, maintaining the PlayStation tradition.
Home was first slated for September or October 2007 and then pushed back to "Spring 2008." And now, like that, Sony slides it back again. Hit the jump for the full press release.

What the hell?
By the time they actually release this, no one will give a damn. I was hyped for a while, like a year ago. Now I'm just meh to the whole thing. Good grief.
Home is so screwed before it even had a chance.
Oh yeah and I almost forgot...
Home better be one hell of a service with all these delays or ps3 owners are gonna bust out the pitchforks and torches.
*Squints* What's the on the horizon?
Ah... A shit storm.
Home Sweet Ho... Under Construction
Fanboys will explode over this, I never had high hopes for home
Heh. I had forgotten about Home.
Get the cows in the barn ma!
@bboboo: epic shit storm. I'm not getting involved in this.
Delay complaints are better than buggy release complaints, I guess.
Sony: The new Nintendo
Hm... maybe they should just announce a date when they already have it perfect so that people don't get so mad. Something that marketing pushes I suppose, like how retailers want to set a date for a game's release to get people pumped up, even though they don't really know.
WHYYYY!!!! FIRST MGO AND NOW THIS!!!! AHHHHHH!
This could turn into the new "Duke Nuken: Forever" or "Chinese Democracy". Okay, maybe not that bad, but probably more "Who cares anymore" when it comes out.
This is terrible news! I was hoping to have this for the summer, but I guess that is out the window. Oh well, I hope it will be worth it once the wait is over.
Well that should pretty much quiet down all the "Where the heck is HOME?" questions for at least another 4 months or so. I can't say I'm too surprised about it though - besides the Warhawk patch, there's been like zero new information on Home in the first place.
On another note: how does one actually get invited to the beta? Is it based on registration to the official PS forums or PSN ID?
They should just set up a PS3 area in Second Life and call it good.
Home is pulling a Zelda... Delays after Delays and when it's finally comes out and does everything Sony had promised this thing would be awesome....
For the people in the Home Beta if any, Does it take a seperate install to have Home on your PS3 to be integrated into your PS3 or is it like a System update where its there and its not going anywhere.
I'm not interested in Home itself but rather how it works.
i give up
i dont even care anymore. atleast i have mgs4 to warm the cockles if my heart
I don't really care about home, but I want my Uncharted Another World-esque minigame dammit![kotaku.com]
Home better be waaaay better than Xbox Live, if they're delaying it this much...sheesh. I will have high expectations.
well, with the ammount of games comming out that "aren't quite up to par" or "needs more time in the oven" atleast by the time its released it can't be unfinished.
i guess this can only be a good thing in the end
If home ends up failing, I can't imagine what's going to happen to the people who were in charge of it.
@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: Vanguard proved that you can always put out something unfinished even if you pour money, time, and human souls into it. :P
Were they too ambitious for their own good?
Maybe there getting feedback from testers saying it's boring, dunno.....
shit Storm??? I just love the selection of the story picture. The avatar in home is symbolic of the people waiting for home: he seems to be waiting for nothing :P
I keed! I keed! Strong-Bad made me say it :)
In all seriousness, it's as you say for games (as I say for fallout 3) which is Sony should take all the time they need to make sure they deliver a competent product. What shouldn't be tolerated is the constant carrot waving in front of people with anything playstation... IT'S COMING SOON...SOONER THAN YOU THINK! You think late? MO! SOONER THAN THAT! Seriously? Are people who are anticipating home enjoying being jerked around like that? Really??(!)
Wow, seriously kinda getting sick of this crap now.
I'm on the edge of not caring at all now. I was kinda excited about it, just for the fact that I could hopefully bust out my PS3 for more than a big shiny Blu-Ray player, but this is getting rediculous. Oh well, hopefully some game will come out that is a PS3 exclusive, and then I'll have a reason to turn my PS3 on again...
Until then I'll just stick with my 360 and Live (Thanks microsoft for giving me a reason to play games on your console!)
*NO!
I don't even care about the damn thing at this point. Unless this totally revolutionizes whatever the hell this thing does, then it's going to be another massive failure on Sony's part.
@TheCleaningGuy: Totally forgot about that...*looks*
heh, looks like the Resistance Home "bonus" will be a moot point by the time the Open Beta rolls around eh? Too many would be focusing on the sequel coming out by then
With the profitability news and now this, is there anyone out there who still doesn't believe the PS3 was released too soon? If Sony had rode out the PS2 until sometime right about now and were releasing the PS3 this fall, they would have done so much better than they have so far this gen.
2009 is the PS3's year!
Seriously, Sony dropped the ball here. Being optimistic, I guess it's better they release a polished product later on than a half-assed one sooner.
Remember folks, the most press Home will get is when it's officially released. If they don't do it right initially it will be a failure to most. Even if it's patched to perfection later on. The news does not cover patches
Sony needs to learn a lesson from Haze. Push a release date back far enough, and everyone will cease to give a damn about the product.
Sony really bit off more than they could chew with HOME.
i dont have a ps3 but I want one soley for this reason (home) and blu-ray as an added bonus (didnt buy either format till a winner was declared) but from all the delays it sounds like it will either be hitting the PS4 or microsoft will have their own..
@GUNDAM-RX-78-2:
It's more like a demo that's filed under the game icon with all your other demos.
Although I've seen video where it appears under the new PSN logo icon.
I'm not too surprised by this news. I've been in the thing since June of last year.
And no I don't have any secrets to share. Everything you want to know about Home has already been posted on the web in some form and it's likely that when another update comes down (which I suspect will be another two months) someone will post video of that too.
I think if they if have never said a date or time frame or anything, it would be so fricken annoying.
@thinkfreemind:
Who knows if any of this stuff would have been in the PS3 if it were released later on.
Most of the things that are being added have been based on complaints from PS3 owners. From the high price, to the lack of in-game XMB, and so forth.
LOL, wow, funny cuz a friend of mine asked me when is Home supposed to come out and when i said spring he was like "that sh** is never coming out." Guess he was right....
*sigh* all these delays has made me numb to Home and any Home related information
What? Isn't it going to be free? Stop complaining.
Fucking cancel Home and just give us ingame communication.
From what I've seen, home looks fine and I don't understand why they just won't release it "as is" and make mandatory updates later. Also: check back tomorrow for news of Home's cancellation.
How about a in-game XMB in the meantime?
I have to say that delays never bothered me, in a distorted sorta way it's the developer going "It isn't good enough for you yet".
That said - how the heck did it get pushed back from September 2007 to Summer 2008?
Does this have anything to do with the Metal Gear servers getting destroyed by demand? Perhaps someone at the Home project is wondering where that traffic came from, and how they can steer it in their direction.
@StealthMaster86: if the PS3 did everything Sony had promised it would be awesome.
how the hell am i supposed to pick up women now?
What ever happened to this: [www.homebetatrial.com] ???
When I see the that picture I think of Rex Kwan Do for some reason.
meh
