The Unreal Engine may be pioneering Meat Cube Physics technology with the latest updates shown at GDC, but it can't match the authentic 2D blob calculating power of Whatever Is Powering Gish 2. With a staggering 128 (!!!) independent blob particles, we'll soon be experiencing the next generation of gelatinous mound rendering when Gish 2 ships. The best part about this clip is that it informs me that Gish 2 is in development. We're all winners!

The original was great. I approve!
That's pretty cool.
Also ... love the music.
The music ain't quite my cup of tea, but whatever.
Looks OKAY, though Locoroco impressed me far more.
haha awesome! :D
Absolutely mesmerizing. The music is what made the vid, to me at least. Also, was I the only one who wished desperately for someone to move that mouse cursor out of the way?
OK McWhertor! It's official, I can't tell when you are being sarcastic anymore :(
I think the demo was really cool and I would love to see some meta-ball graphics incorporated in there to give it a more fluid liquid look. The wire frame version looks just as cool though :)
The music is by Mr. Bungle. A project by the famed Mike Patton himself. This is some of the weirder stuff. Check out the CD California. It's a little more tame.
OMFG can we move the mouse out of the way please??
Hey! The music is Mr. Bungle!
And I thought I as going crazy, thinking that the song was coming from my iTunes. Every time I pressed play on the video, lol. =)
I don't know what it is, but I want to play it.
"I know the secret song noooow... they wouldn't tell meee"
Haha... that song is pretty funny, but I never even heard of Gish 1, but judging by the staggering 128 blog particles it looks pretty fun, plus it reminds me of Loco Roco, which is good.
Mr. Bungle rocks!
freaking cool!
Loved the first one, this looks awesome!
If only someone would bother to implement these things in normal games. I mean, I am still waiting for proper fluid physics in mainstream gaming.
There needs to be more Mr. Bungle game videos.
PS Patton is God
Someone obviously needs to go google SodaPlay. We messed with that back in ol' 1998 Physics class.
I'm shocked by the appearance of Carry Stress in the Jaw. If this game had a Bungle soundtrack I would buy it.
Mister Bungle Mister Bungle Mister Bungle. Awesome. Disco Volante is such a great album. And this is Locoroco as hell.
Pretty impressive physics, but I wonder how long you can stand running around collecting all the bits of yourself that break off too easily.
Either way, I'm sure they'll make it fun. Gish was great.
Quickly! LocoRoco2 team steal the intel! go go go go
The Mr. Bungle Track was the only reason I kept watching it...
This was "the Secret Song" ... A song they were working on with other Disco Volante songs, but they kept it secret from one of the Horn Players (I think) ... he later found it, and recorded those old-man sounding vocals on top of it...
I was very unimpressed by Gish. I don't know why it got such rave reviews.
yeah i agree, just reminds me of Loco Roco. i can just imagine hearing the "AHHHHHHHH" to gather up the blobs again
Am I supposed to be impressed by this? I've seen better 2D physics before. Better blob physics even.
Man that looks awesome.
Love the song.
Developers: The omen has been delivered. A remake of Flashback is now due. That is all.
I loved Gish 1... I'm just happy there's a sequel coming. Hopefully it doesn't matter that you leave clumps behind in 2.
The TORQUE engine (that powered TRIBES I and II) was the first game. I wonder if this is using the new Torque engine, or something new?
the first Gish was amazing , glad to hear a second is coming along!
as I recall Gish came out years before locoroco? or maybe my mind is exagerating time again.
anyway, gish 1 was fun, Ill be looking forward to this one
@Sawboss: All they need to do is re-skin Uncharted and add these new blob physics. BAM. 3D Flashback.
For some reason I enjoyed the music more than watching the video.
The music reminds me of primus for some weird reason.
Very nice tech demo! Though the movement of the blobs is a bit disturbing.
Oh god, I am loving that song so much.
Lightyears? More like parsecs. Am I right?
Looks pretty cool and interesting, but it's hard for me to impressed since the forces acting on the blob are so unnatural. I don't associate that thing with any sort of physical object I'm familiar with.
Loco Roco had mostly circular blobish things that could bounce and roll downhill. That makes sense. But this flying apart and walking on walls, and doing flips... It's not realistic enough for me to think "Oh wow, that looks just like a blob moving around," and it's too foreign for me to go "Wow, that's doing all this cool stuff I want to do."
It just looks like an interesting thing to control, but it will take learning and getting used to. Without any sort of intuition about what you're doing with this blob, this game really doesn't seem to have much else to be interesting.
Very interesting... hope to play the game when it's complete.
But it kinda creeps me out.
Once when I was a kid, I was playing with some little spiked balls I found "glued" in some corner... it suddenly burst and hundreds of little spiders came crawling out....
I think I have a trauma ever since. Scares the hell out of me.
@Bokusatsu_Tenshi: Oooh...I had a similar thought. It reminds me a little too much of cocoons.
Screw 128 blob particles, give me 128 different jellybean types and boy, I'll be placated.
so will we be gettin locoroco HD anytime soon?
@StagnatedLives:
No, you're right. Gish was out in 2004, two years before LocoRoco hit Japan. LR reminded me a lot of Gish, but to be honest they played totally differently.
@Jawajoey:
It's not all unintentional. In the original with different buttons you could become sticky to climb or pick things up, jump (also good for throwing things on top of you), become heavy and dense at will, or become slippery to fit through small cracks.
fluid dynamics at it's best...this will be awesome
Awesome music!
So this isn't a sequel to Smashing Pumpkins' classic debut album?
Oh man. This plus Locoroco 2 would be amazing. Plus more awesome music. Lots of it.
This is going to be the best game ever
That looks really cool, and I like the music, too.
This song is called "Carry Stress in the Jaw" on the Disco Volante album
