I had been curious about Prototype since I heard the title. For some reason on my various jaunts to game events I had never gotten a chance to see it demoed. So I seized the opportunity to check it out at Sierra's Spring Event.
Prototype takes place in an open world recreation of New York City and you take o the role of Alex Mercer who has awakened with super powers and little memory. New York has been infested by zombie like creatures called the Infected and even the surrounding buildings have been sucked into to their evil. Hives of infected dot the city and more an more appear all the time. Using your super human abilities, you must disover the conspiracy involved that made this happen and attempt to save the city. But just because you are attempting to help out doesn't make you a hero. Alex Mercer is a decided anti-hero, out for himself and whatever he can get. And you don't have just the Infected to worry about either, there is the Army as well who is not only out to stop the infected, but for some unknown reason, out to get you too. Also be on the lookout for the mysterious Black Watch who have a hand in this somewhere as well.
The real draw in this game, at least for me, was the super powers and there were a lot of them. All sorts of special moves and knowledge can be gained from devouring the people around you. One of these powers comes to great effect when trying to escape from the Army who is chasing you down. If you can manage to get out of sight and eat someone, you can take on their form and walk around undetected. But, you must be careful. One false move or use of your super powers out in public will cause your cover to be blown and you will be on the run again so stealth is the key in these situations. Devouring other people will also allow you to gain their knowledge and put it to your own use. For instance, devour an Army tank driver and you gain the ability to drive tanks and the same goes for weapon use. The more enemies of one type that you consume, the better your ability in that area becomes. And the nice thing is, once you gain these abilities, you always have them at your disposal. Some of the other special powers include an area attack where thorny tentacles reach out of the ground to attack your enemies and a Hammer Fist which pounds enemies into the ground. A lock on system helps as well for targeting certain enemies amongst the crowds of people who are running about in a panic everywhere you go. If your really feisty, you can even distract attention form yourself by accusing random passers by of being you which will cause all surrounding enemies to open fire on the poor innocent.
Since it is an open world, you can go wherever you please, but there is a main storyline whos plot is revealed as you make your way through the game devouring people left and right. Ingesting main characters throughout the game will give you clues as to what exactly is going on here. You must use your powers to reconstruct your past and eventually discover the giant conspiracy that provides the game's hidden plot. Ultimately, you control the pace of the game by choosing which way you want to handle your enemies. Deceive or Destroy? Which one will you choose?
Prototype really reminded me a lot of Crackdown in it's basic gameplay mechanics. While the game itself looked interesting, I was a little disappointed in the graphics. The character models seemed very simplistic and I saw the same several models over and over again in the various crowd scenes. But, as this was an early build I'm hoping that this is something that will be taken care of when the final coat of paint is applied to the project.
Prototype launches this fall for the 360 and PS3 and is a single player experience although they did hint that co-op and online play were both being looked at as possibilities. And yes, there will be downloadable content although what form that will take remains to be seen.

One of my best mates is called Alex Mercer.
Err..thats it really.
Still wanna do you Flynn so if yer ever in London look me up, innit
I have serious doubts about Prototype.
i really didnt think this game was going to be that good, but now that i see the game footage it definitely looks like a keeper.
The prospect of eating people to gain skills is like a delicious combination of The Matrix and Digital Devil Saga.
Also on PC as well as the consoles, BTW :)
I'm very interested in this one, seeing as I loved both Crackdown and Assassin's Creed, and this seems to be another spin on that formula.
Oh and incidentally Flynn, it's also being released on the PC. Gotta keep my fanboy quotient up!
It looks ok, but in terms of sandbox super power games I think I'll put my money toward inFamous instead.
I really liked the initial trailers for this game, but I'm still on the fence about it. It's a cool premise and after reading this article it seems to have some unique gameplay mechanics, but I'm just really worried about the final product.
I might give this a try, but I'll definitely be keeping my eye out on how the reviews are first.
Anyone else think the storyline is a bitch cliche? You are a superhero, and there are zombies, and a government conspiracy somehow makes the army come after you. Oh well if it is a good game, i can over look that.
@Sparx: Anything new been released bout infamous? I havent seen anything since it was announced.
Hmmm, I was excited about this game, but after watching those clips something tells me that this game will turn out to be another Bullet Witch.
@SofaKingHI:
Not sure, there's an information thread about it in the playstation forums but I havent really been looking

Seems cool but i hope they'll work on the looks before release.
I thought the developer recently announced there will be no multiplayer or co-op in the game. Am I thinking of another open-world game?
These guys should team up with Rockstar for some knowledge blending. I wanna see this game work >_<
Come on, it's Sierra, it can't possibly end up sucking >_<
This game kind of reminds me of State of Emergency and how mindless you have to be to play that game.
I am so hyped for this. I cannot wait for this game. The gameplay videos look amazing and it's going to simply rock.
Thanks for article. You made my morning. Can't wait for Prototype!!!!
Looks very, very interesting. I like the idea of consuming characters abilities, and disguising yourself using them is really cool. Hope the story turns out well (unlike Crackdown).
Does anyone else think the graphics aren't very impressive? The motions look incredibly fake and fighting doesn't look real and everything about it looks unnatural and artificial and unfinished. Hopefully they can make it a bit better cos it does look promising.
@Ultrasinc: They should definitely sit at a roundtable with Rockstar for a lunch or something.
I am interested as someone else said - if this could spin in the way that Assassin's Creed (or Crackdown, though I haven't played the latter) it would definitely jump a notch or two for me.
The game seems interesting, but from these guys we have played this game before....it was called Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. It is a good game, a very good game for last-gen.
They have a few examples to draw from now, so here's hoping for the best!
I am so getting this game.
Lets just hope they keep the level of "mess" it currently has the same and not try to water it down due to ratings or public outcry.
This totally looks like a great mind killer game.
@vanderblade:
No, you're right. That was a serious downer for me. It was such a large part of what made Crackdown so much fun. I can't see why it wouldn't be a priority focus for them.
Looks quite interesting. I'll probably get it if the demo (if there is one) impresses me.
@Basscadet: Wait...wtf. Did I read that properly as a totally open invitation for international sex?
@Flynn:
I know you are pumping out these stories but if you get a chance, can you expand on your comment about the character models in Prototype. I'm curious to know if the detail is at least equal to Crackdown as Crackdown is a heavily stylized game; It's hard to really tell anything from the video. How does this stand up to other sandbox type games visually like Saints Row, GTA4, etc...
with so much stuff going on, I'm not surprised about the character models.
and yeah, I also think infamous will be better but looking forward to trying both
Turning on my OMG switch!
I'm pretty excited about this one, I must say. I can also see this one turning into a horrible, horrible game. Like the spidermans ...
Anyways, they really need to lose the hood on the main character, give him hair like Dante ;)
@Witzbold: Agreed. I especially like the shot of him skating on a human body. It sounds very....wet.
I'm skeptical/iffy on watching hoody dude absorbing of other bodies. oh well, the game looks so cool, I'm along for the ride.
Sega & hulk should be taking notes on the large array of animation that the prototype character does.
I'll get it.
Eat people. check.
Crazy Battletoad-esq powers. check.
open world go at your own pace. check.
graphics, meh I dont mind them slacking so much if the gameplay makes up for it.
@dabu:
HAHAHA
International Sex? you make it sound a bit James Bond but Sure, Why not?!
I'm totally Gay for that De Marco dude.
The game looks maybe fun, I'll play a demo. But one thing I can*NOT* get over is the fact that the guy's appearance, in that hoodie outfit, is a straight rip of the evil prince vampire turned vampire-eater in Blade 2.
Yes, straight out of Blade 2... not sure how I feel about that.
Here's a shot with his hoodie down but with it up, it's a sale for sure:

If you can skate on a dead human corpse im in.
@deathtastic: Rock On bro! Corps Surfing!!!
Adaptive parkour?! No, that was running around and jumping off a car...and then floating up through some helicopter blades. If that counts as Parkour (it shouldn't) than Mario 64 (and many others) had Parkour modes we didn't know about.
As of right now, Prototype isn't impressing me. It looks like it has some halfway-interesting ideas, but overall it looks and feels rather stale.
Wow. It was a bit underwhelming graphics wise, but the gameplay looks fuuuuun!!! :)
I was iffy on this game as to how it was going to work, but maaaaan it looks fun from this video.
Gameplay does look good, but the graphics look PS2. I was thrilled for this one, but after seeing this video, I'm not any more.
I'm more interested in this game than GTA. I rather play as a mutant with super powers than a gangster.
the video was... well, it was ok to show of the game but I really hope that that does not represent the final product.. it looks so blank... they need to add a lot of detail to make the game look good.. besides that it looked like the running animation didnt match up with his speed... still loks almost as bad as last time I saw it... :(
I think these guys are going to have to reexamine graphics for reasons everyone now knows....GTA just looks ridiculous for a game of this type. it really has raised the bar.
That said, the gameplay looks great and I remain optimistic about this title.
This game looks awesome, I've always liked free world things, especially ones where you were obviously more powerful than everyone else and their lives were in your hands, you could be gracious and let them live, or commit genocide just for the hell of it. I'm disappointed though that they took co-op out though, that was my favorite part of Crackdown. Just going around and screwing around with my friend, like getting together all the cars that would come on a highway and pile them all up until no more came, then spawning explosive barrels, getting back, and blowing them all up. Or one of us would drive a car and the other would sit on the roof with and shoot out the tires of cars that we drove by. Good times!
Meh.
I hope that you're the one.
Yes.
You are the prototype.
We'll sail off to the sun.
@GrimaceXL: Yep...page 3 of the "So you need a Cliche for a plot?" Omnibus. Page 3, article 6, subsection 2, reads: "Your character is an experiment, both a Government AND a shady "illuminati" style group will require access to your character, by any means necessary.
