So I am taking the reins from Mark for the day and presenting you guys with the Justify Your Game segment. In today's segment, Eric Walter from Nintendo justifies Mario Kart Wii. Normally the speaker only has 15 seconds to justify their game, but this guy was good. He nailed it in 12 seconds.

All I can say is. I've been playing Online a LOT since it came out in europe two weeks ago.
i didn't think he was going to make it
I suppose no more needs to be said about Mario Kart. Either you like it or you don't. Wait, make that love!
ahhhh i miss the old into for justify your.
i loved that keyboard. i laughed so hard every time i heard that keyboard intro
i guss change is change but i miss the old inro :(
I'm really excited to finally play it this summer, when I've got so much free time. I just hate having to pick up accessories for the Wii, they always sell out in the area I'm in, and I can never find them. It only comes with one wheel, right?
I could do it in 3 seconds. 12 player online, wheel.
@Nirual: I can beat that with 1.2 seconds: Mario Kart.
But then I'm a fan.
@Erwin: Crap. Double post. Sorry and all that. Just wanted to add that it's good to see Justify Your Game back. How long has it been since the last one?
First time WiFi for Mario Kart?!
wtf was I doing on Mario Kart DS?!
Wait wait, I thought the wheel was a source of ridicule. Did this change?
I love the Justify your game series. I am quite sure how I feel about the game, I mean I don't really think I am going to buy the game. I'd rather check out Okami first.
@Erwin: Word. I love "Justify Your Game."
Also, kudos to that guy for making it pretty much exactly 12 seconds.
...*sings along* "let me see how spring is like on jupiter and mars"...
damn that song will be stuck on my head for the rest of the day
he didnt say anything about the mario kart channel D:
@Wildarms7000: You were playing with bots :O
@Yuki: no, but apparently is actually pretty good for being just a piece of plastic
@BassForever: It's online, man.
just becasue it sold 600k copies in japan doesn't make it any good. People will buy any mario game for any reason at all.
@Yuki: After a bunch of people tried it and grudgingly admitted, "Yeah, it's pretty good after all," it kind of lost meaning as a source of ridicule.
Friend codes, though, you can keep using those.
aparently this is the first time they have multiplayer
Is it just me, or should "the best thing" about a game be the game itself rather than the (optional) peripheral used to play it?
I'm not hating on the Wii/Wheel/Mario Kart, I'm just saying... gameplay first!
what about HORRIBLE rubber-banding. Terrible blue shell, 150 cc races that depend purely on luck, and how bout those items like the new blue shell that ruin the game - OH YA NO ITEM EDITOR - what, that would take like what 1 day to code and implement, thanks a bunch assholes at nintendo
"We'll see when it comes out"
I've completed it
@mabman: woops mentioned blue shell twice, just shows how livid i was at the time...
@madhotch: just becasue it sold 600k copies in japan doesn't make it any good. People will buy any mario game for any reason at all.
Mighty brave of you to be saying inflammatory things like that on Ban Monday.
I know he's in charge of PR, but number of units sold is not a metric for quality, ESPECIALLY for first day sales.
For example, Mario Strikers Charged has sold over a million copies, and it's not a very good game.
You can't justify Mario Kart Wii, because technically other than shiny graphics and motorcyles, there's absolutely no reason to pick it up over the other games (which you could pick up now for probably half the price of Mario Kart Wii). There's absolutely no justification to this game.
I'll be getting it this Saturday.
If I enjoy it, it's a good game.
If you don't enjoy it, it's a bad game.
This is why I take all reviews with a large amount of salt.
But Mario Kart got me to actually bother dusting off my Wii, so I have no complaints.
If the Wii wheel is "the best part about it" I might as well buy one by itself instead of the game.
"Jusify your game" has been and forever will be an exercise in futility. And I love it. This guy sucks ass at it, though. You're supposed to nail it or go over, you don't wrap up early. Geez.
Two words: Crotch Rocket.
@baberg: The problem is that he (madhotch) is right.
Nintendo could put shit in a shoebox, slap Mario's grill on it with a clever title like " Mario's Sewage Adventure Playset" ( remember he IS a plumber ) and it would pre-sell 500K the first day announced.
That is why we keep seeing the same recylcled characters in the same recycled Mario games. It the the reason why Mario Kart Wii looks no different than the GC version or (even the 64 version for that matter) and nobody gives a damn.
That just shows you how powerfull Nintendo is. It shows how effective their marketing is and how loyal their fans are. Nostalgia from the NES days can only go so far before people say " Enough is enough. Give us a new IP. "
Nintendo has been a part of my life for the past 20 years. I have always enjoyed thier games and systems, but I am now at that point where I am starting to say " Been there, played that. Give me something new! " I know I am going to be attacked and bludgeoned by rabid fanboys now but I must ask them and the "Big N" as well:
Is it realy too much to ask to get a new IP every 20 years or so?
12 seconds, eh? Well, he deserved the 3 second penalty, since "they" called Brian "BRAIN" on his MK license...
Oh, yes, american people, the game IS awesome. Im gonna go now and DREAM o Smash Bros Brawl... sucks to be EuroPAL gamer these days... at elast we Wii Fit next Thrudasy over ere (1 day erlaier then the rest of Europe because [en.wikipedia.org] )
The Reins from Mark? I see what you did there.
missing the: "JUSTIFY YOUR GAME" tag!!!
>:|
God I'm tired of wasting 2-minute increments of my life on crappy and uninteresting videos completely devoid of any entertainment, aesthetic, informational or substantive value.
Just because you can doesn't mean you should. C'mon Kotaku, be part of the solution not the problem.
@Dakobah: I feel the same way.
Poor keyboard gets left out of the luls.
@Wildarms7000:
I was more concerned with 'For the first time; multiplayer' XD
@Mr.SithNinja: New IPs? Pikmin was new on the Gamecube, and that was fantastic. Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Nintendogs, etc.
Just because you may not like these new IPs doesn't mean they aren't there. Oh, and those IP's all sold DAMN well also. Note that I said "may not like" - I don't claim to know your opinions.
All I'm saying is that Nintendo is certainly creating new IPs, just not the ones us "core" gamers may want.
I could explain everything to make someone buy Mario Kart, but it would take me 15 minutes.
@Mr.SithNinja: Agreed, I think Pikmin was their last new IP, not sure though. Does anyone know?
@Mr.SithNinja: While I agree that Nintendo needs a new IP I have to disagree about one point you made in general.
"It the the reason why Mario Kart Wii looks no different than the GC version or (even the 64 version for that matter) and nobody gives a damn."
Nobody gives a damn because it's still fun to play. It doesn't need to be shinier and prettier than the last iteration to remain a fun, addictive, entertaining game.
@Mr.SithNinja: I'll agree that Nintendo needs a new IP however I'm going to disagree adamantly on one point.
"It the the reason why Mario Kart Wii looks no different than the GC version or (even the 64 version for that matter) and nobody gives a damn."
Nobody gives a damn because they're still fun to play. They don't need to be shinier / prettier to remain addictive and entertaining.
@Mr.SithNinja: Well, he's right that a sales number alone does not justify a game purchase.
But as for the new IP, I don't think its really necessary. One of the biggest strengths of the Wii is that it opens gaming up to a new community who are obviously not as familiar with them as we are. And don't forget about the kids who are experiencing home video games for the first time. None of these people care about the 3 previous Mario Karts. Its a successful formula that they will love.
Many people (obviously excluding many on here) that grew up playing Nintendo games have moved on to more expensive consoles and more mature games. Nintendo is not going to gain these people back with simply a new IP. Reusing a successful formula is the smartest move for them.
@Dakobah: I AGREE!! The other intro was so.....corny and hilarious. This is too professional and non-hilarious. Failness =(
I do like the ending clip tho.
@Shiryu: And we all know that "Brain" and "Crecente" shouldn't be used in the same sentence. Nintendo = Fail.
You know, I'm a big fan of the "Justify Your ..." line of Kotaku original videos....
But I'm an even bigger fan of the old intro/jingle. That's what made it for me. Without the old piano jingle, "Justify Your ..." seems empty, without character, and... bland.
Please bring it back! ;_;
"Six hundred thousand copies on the first day so obviously it's a good game".
I'm not entirely convinced that he meant every syllable of this unpunctuated sentence, though uhhh, uhhh, uhhh. Yeah.
I guess that's how you get a job in PR.
@Mr.SithNinja: God forbid being fun being a major point of accomplishment for a game.
A game can be fun, have major appeal and a huge lifespan but it's a complete failure if it doesn't take the much beloved characters and franchises that have made Nintendo famous, completely scrap them, then come up with something in a space of 2 seconds.
GOD DAMN YOU DONKEY KONG, WHY DO YOU EXIST AND WHY DO YOU KEEP TORMENTING ME WITH BANANAS!!! The game would be much better if it was Horse Dong who threw horseshoes at me instead.
hey, that was pretty good.
Now I feel like digging out my old Sinatra albums, or re watching Eva. God I love that song.
Trying to sell Mario Kart is like selling Halo, GTA, or Ice Cream. You already know if you want it or not.
Here's my justification:
"Mario Kart has always been awesome. The new version is just as much fun as it's always been with the added bonus of really well implemented online play."
Sorted.
The funny thing is; that stupid wii wheel is a fucking to
